I've found brass prep to be pretty important meaning consistent dimensions. And yes we've all screwed up some aspect of reloading at some point. For my part I used mixed head stamp 1X fired range brass and it was a disaster. All I did was turn money into noise. I've shot Gunwerks and Starline brass sub MOA with the 69 gr SMK over H335 in a Savage bolt gun. I wish I could afford Lapua brass for everything. Thanks for bringing us along!
It’s the Chamber! The difference between .223 and 5.56 is NOT the brass, it’s the chamber tolerances. The .223 chamber slightly “smaller” and will build more pressure than the exact same cartridge in a 5.56 chamber. It doesn’t matter if the cartridge is a .223 or 5.56, they will build the same pressure in a .223 chamber and also the same pressure in a 5.56 chamber (but both will produce less in a 5.56 chamber. Personally, i fully resize brass and load for .223 chamber. This way the round is safe in any gun and IMO, more accurate. BTW, I also load 69gr Sierras.
I have been meaning to reload up some 69gr SMKs. I have always had amazing success with the SMKs and CFE223. Thanks for inspiring me to go after some small groups with this.... Glad to have your content flowing to my stream again Logan.
you mentioned the round cooking, I've done some testing on that with a known good load. letting it sit for only 5 minutes didn't affect my velocity or groups. I suspect it takes longer than 5 minutes for the heat to be absorbed by the brass and the powder. I've also tested how long it takes for my ammo to cool down after its been sitting in my car. it took about an hour for it to fully cool down and the accuracy to come back. for the hell of it, in one of my f-class matches, I let a round sit for almost 10 minutes while I was waiting for a condition to come back. when I finally shot it, there was no issue on target.
First time here! Nice channel. Hodgdon CFE223 tends to spike pressure really quick. I load it in 308 and 223. Temp stability by chart is a staggering 1.70 compared to IMR4064 which i use at .43. Varget .13 on one chart. This would change some with the area but i haven't ran into serious issues. Anyways I've had great accuracy with it in 308 Winchester under 175gr SMK. In Lapua brass lit with CCI #200 primers. 45.0gr to 46.0 shot to within ⅛ inch of exact POA @ 100 yards. I ran 46.0 with some minor flattening of primer. The velocities were phenomenal. I then dropped to 45.5gr and run that now. This load in a stock Savage FCP m10 shot less the .4 five shot groups in between 45.0 and 46.0 grain. in .2 increments. I have never seen that before. It has been out to 1200 yards with excellent accuracy in summer to fall weather. My health isnt the greatest so it limits me at times. I know most will find this hard to believe but this rifle 2 years ago, with lots of practice rain, wind etc. 3 to 5 evenings a week, teaching a friend long range, would bust clay pigeons from 800 to 1000 consistently. The temperature sensitivity that charts show is bad but with the results I have with my load and rifle are to good for me to change. Loading up a batch and putting them in the freezer overnight and another in outside day summer/fall temps would be a really interesting video. Of course all that can be loaded into your ballistic calculator in the end. Excellent content! New sub. Keep'em coming!
CFE 223 and 69 SMK is my best load combo in my Rock River match. I use LC brass and CCI 41's. I've been wanting to try those primers, but haven't found them anywhere. Tac was a close second on powder.
I use to load mixed brass ,60 gr hornady soft points with 23 .5 gr H4895. I got good groups it is a bit dirty though. I haven't been able to find the powder for 2 yrs.
Good to see you back, Sorry it's took me a week to get it watched. I like Shooters World Match Rifle with this bullet. In a 22" bolt gun getting 2809fps (sd11) with a warm charge. It's defiantly a cheaper powder to try if you can find it.
Great video I have both of these powers and experienced about the same accuracy. I noticed that the cfe filled my cases before I got to max. From what I have read cfe likes to be compressed
I have had perty good luck with mixed brass i have a sako 75 and I use good dies and bullets and shoot under half inch with mixed brass I've noticed that LC doesn't handle the pressure as good as wcc Hornady seems a little soft and star line is probably the bang for your buck i do alot of 223 from 55gr to 80gr
@West Desert Shooter I use H4895 in .308, 30 06, and 7.5X55. It's a good power. Glad to see you back. I'm your #61 subscriber. I'm very proud of how well you have done with your channel brother. It's awesome. 👍
last two shots were the tallest headspace and the closest shots of the group. so next test that headspace and shoot without the supresor and the magneto speed. you should get better results. Really nice video, thank you !!
Any experience with a mandrel die? Just got set up for reloading and trying to decide how to set neck tension on rifle rounds I won't be crimping. Currently 2 hours in to resizing 9mm brass so thanks for uploading lol
You can remove your decapping and expander assembly from your resizing die and use like a body die or just your decapping pin I made a video recently where I bumped the shoulder back on already loaded reloads for 6mm Creedmore that were a few thousandths to long you should try shooters world match rifle powder my favorite not just for 5.56/.233 but 6ARC and some other cartridges I reload for as well too thx safe shooting
@@WestDesertShooter yeah the die I was using was a bushing die did not think of that thx. If I remember correctly did you do a video on .224 Valkyrie speaking of the neck I was reloading for.224 Valkyrie using a RCBS small base sizer die for a semi I don’t know what kind of die you used if you did but the RCBS seems to make the neck to tight when I start to seat the bullet into the case neck it seems harder than normal to do and deforms the bullets with a ring around the bullet where the stem meets the bullet do you know if RCBS made them to tight I split the necks on more than a few seating bullets I even had that problem on new Starline brass thx
@fjb4932 The length from the base of the case to the shoulder, where headspace is determined, definitely affects how close the bullet is to the lands. think about it, the shorter the case, the farther it goes into the chamber and the closer, the bullet gets to the lands.
@fjb4932 it does something, but it depends how much clearance is between the extractor and the rim. another thing to consider is how far the firing pin pushes the case until the primer goes off. I have about .015 clearance on the one I checked.
From a novice reloader, why are you chasing low SD when the groups look like crap ? Seems the low SD isn’t helping your group size. I’m not getting the correlation.
Ideally I’ll find a load with both. But shooting far consistent velocity gets more hits that the difference between a 1 inch or 3/4” group at 100 yards. I won’t be shooting CFE far until it shoots a moderate group but any of those 4895 loads would work well out to 800+ yards
Feels like Johnny’s Reloading Bench. I like it!!
God damn I miss jrb where did he go?
Burned out. Hopefully some day a fire will ignite and he will get back to it. He is definitely a favorite.

Someone has to fill the space missing from JRB this year. Fabulous work
Hope he’s all good
Definitely missing JRB hope he is getting back on track.
Its been difficult for everyone to make content. They didn't want to burn up all their primers and powders.
Glad to see you are back. I've been loading 25gr of H335 with 62gr bthp Hornady Pills for 5.56. Performance is flawless in my PSA AR15 16"

Awesome video and glad you’re back! Super easy format to follow and great reloading info on a 16” gas gun.
Glad to see you’re back shooting / posting videos! 🎯
No apologies needed. You learned and we piggybacked. Good stuff!
Glad to see your back doing videos!! I am looking at getting the Uintah Precision UPR15 in 6mm arc or 223 rem for a article here soon.
Glad you are back bro. Also I'm enjoying the other channel.
I'm from Utah and I was wondering if you were ever going to post again I really love your content thank you subscribed

CFE223 has replaced every other powder for my 22-250 and .223/5.56 loading.
Thanks for your honesty your video is informative I for one appreciate it i shoot aCZ527cal.223 very interested in what you are doing thanks
Good shooting, I never thought that H4895 would work well in .223 due to how corse the grains are but it looked good. 👍
Hey Rick it’s been a while man. I have used Varget for a long time and it is similar so I’m used to the extruded powder in the 223

Your looking in a Hornaday book for Hodgden powders and Sierra bullets ?
You know what would be awesome, a m80a1 accuracy test. I cant find any on youtube.
Look into getting some steel ASC mags. You can load a little bit longer OAL.
my sierra manual has a max of 24.5 grains for an AR15 with the 68 smk
Fantastic stuff! Really great info that is super helpful 👍
Great presentation and contents.

The can stays, I’m going to shoot with it so I want it there.
Where did you find that canister of H4895 at??? Hodgdon apparently is no longer providing it commercial market.
Like your target. Care to pur a link up so we can download the file?
Any experience with a mandrel die? Just got set up for reloading and trying to decide how to set neck tension on rifle rounds I won't be crimping. Currently 2 hours in to resizing 9mm brass so thanks for uploading lol
I hate static lol. So I dust my pan with graphite powder and viola! No static
You can also wipe it down with a dryer sheet. I keep one in a ziplock for such.
5.56 and .223 brass are dimensionally the same.
100% identical ; the variance is in powder load ; throat depth and leade depth in chamber
Doesn't that chronograph affect the barrel resonance? I've seen similar clocks attached not to the barrel, but to the rest.
Sure but I’ll do more tests and keep the chrono on so it will be consistent. I will also try without chrono to compare
Keep up the videos!
I wonder where all those ricochets went.
Earth.
Non achieved orbit.

I have that same scale and it floats also.
Should go with a single shot sled.

It would still undersize the neck and squeeze the projectiles. It works with a bushing die but not what I’m using with 223

do you think the headspace differences affect the bullets' distance to the lands?

No. I have nothing to do with that company anymore.

If you are still needing a set of those dies for 223 let me know I'll make you a good deal ok mine. Basically brand new hardly used.

With the vertical stringing, one might go to jump next...
With an AR15 and magazine restrictions I don’t like to play with OAL much for this gun
Alot of those eld rounds are for the 223 arc. Be careful. Hornaday is setting people up for failure.
🤙🏻🇺🇸
Staball match is way better than cfe 223
I can’t find any locally
says you !
@@DLN-ix6vf temp stable, not as dirty, less Smokey, more dense, all around way better. Cfe is trash.
