The line in the prop is something we have all done and guess also by going reverse with the dinghy in tow. We did it in May however, water was still fffing freezing cold. You do it once and from that moment on you are very aware you have a dinghy in tow. The learning curve is quite steep in this case. The two of you handled it nicely, well done.
Hay there Mark, Recommendation. When you come in to achor you can tie your tender to port or Stbd aft cleat - short line. When you back up the tender will just drift the the oppisite way.
Helpful tips for you… 1. The line from your boat to the dingy/tender is called a “painter”. 2. A painter should never be a sinking line such as the dock lines you are using. It should be a floating line. 3. The painter should always be shortened when entering a marina or reversing so it does not end up in your prop. We love watching your videos. 😊
Thanks so much………dock line was a floating line. I get nervous about backing with a short line as on a previous boat we did that and turned the dingy over, munted the engine. Cannot understand why lines are not ropes on a boat but painters are ropes on a dingy…boating so funny. Thank you for taking the time to help educate us.
Great episode. Lovely to see the you all, Mark, Fiona, Gary and Maryanne. Your vlog is the best, most honest and entertaining sailing/boating vlog. Enviously watching from SV Berocca in Bayswater Auckland. Hope to catch up with you in Picton when you are back. Karen ex AirNZ & Peter.
Mark, you are so much like me. That is too funny about carrying the solar panels on the tender. It would be my luck they would slide off into the water. God was watching over you, getting you the help to carry them to the tender and getting you back to Awanui safely. I would have done the same thing. When I get what my wife calls "a new toy," I always find a way to get it home. How much fun to have your first friends come aboard. Sorry the line got wrapped up in the tender. Great tream work getting it cleared. Jim
What a treat, great video! And a gutsy captain, transporting those solar panels on the dinghy, but who dares wins....again nice drone footage and overall nice video! Thank you
Maybe worth buying DC diving set it has 15-20meter hose and air compressor. Or mini scuba set can be handy for such occasions to investigate fix or clean something underwater. Also a wetsuit for cooler water
Good job removing the rope from the prop. As a salvage diver I have had to remove countless ropes/nets from propellers where the props have been spun so much that the nylon has melted and crept up into the cutlass. Not an easy fix. BTW, the line attached to your tender is called a painter rope. 👍
Hello from the U.S.A. Your's is my favorite RUclips channel. Having said that I always love your "Under The Boat" shots. Its the only channel I watch with that type of photography. And I'm not referring to the prop fouling scenes. I never appreciated the amount of sea life there seems to be everywhere. Keep them coming I'm hooked!
Another week , another adventure, very entertaining, I'm so enjoying watching your travels. Lucky escape with the rope entanglement and good job getting it loose , hopefully without any damage. Have fun with your friends, fair winds.😊
Now as avid watcher of you channel and really Mark I can say I have flown with NZA numerous times. If Mark was still flying and heard his name I would consider getting of the Plane. All I can say is to Mrs R, Drink more Wine as you both have yet through a long Journey and please stay safe. Cheers from AUS
I must admit that was an interesting video, a lot of lessons learned. A lot of laughs and as another person said need to have rope cutters installed on both shafts. The manufacter should have put them on as part of standard systems. Not fair for them, not to mention that to you as boat being built. But in the end all is well after all repairs. Good boating and following seas. ❤️🧜♂️🔱👍🫠🇺🇲 cocoa, fla. USA.
A proper bridle on the dinghy (with floats) and "towing" rope (which floats rather than sinks) - could have helped in avoiding the situation. Ropes are made which float rather than sink. KM
Lines in the prop are a pain in the ass! I have had it twice, and with the barnacles, sharp prop and lack of oxygen, its a rotten job to get it off)). Some marinas have a lot of old lines just hanging about, verry dangerous when you are just docking and the engine switches off because of a stuck prop, especcially when docking alone((. Good job getting it off!
Hi Mark , hey did the same with my Tender rope , at least your swim was warmer than mine in the Marlborough sounds, only do it onece 😊 enjoying your adventures thanks for sharing!
Towing the tender is fine Mark, it’s reversing that caused this, when you get ready to anchor move the tender to the port or starboard side and secure with a taught line until you’re done.
Mark I was just thinking when your head was bobbing around on the tender and I was thinking your hat is going to get blown off in 2 seconds later the wind took your hat away thank God for your own return to boat around so you can retrieve it
The rope prop wrap was a great lesson learned in benign waters ~ the best place to learn them. People new to your vessel are a distraction after operating as a cruising couple (I mean that kindly). Enjoy your time with your kiwi friends.
Dealt with it easily and learnt from it just as easily, we all learn every time we go out on the water, keep living the dream, and well done to you all.
Hi Mark, tow the tender with a long line and when you are close to manoeuvring, mooring ect, just pull the line in and cleat it off shorter, re the solar panels, you need a boat trailer 😅.
Well what can I say. Think your script writer is working overtime. You did say way back it would be honest videos. The good the bad and the ugly. It sure is that. The comment about bowline is 100 % right. The first knot I would teach any new person on the yatch was that knot which you should be able to tie in your sleep. Once you learn it you'll use it for many applications. Keep the adventure going.
Well done Mark and Fiona. Reckon it is a good strategy to create an adventure for the visitors even if is a mild crisis easily remedied by using the snorkelling skills of one of the visitors. This story will be become part of whanau culture.
Your vlogs are getting more hilarious every edition which is why your subscriber count is going up,up,up. But on a serious note Mark, there is one knot that every boatie should learn and master and that is the bowline. It is a knot that will not slip, can be released with one hand no matter how tight it is tied and will not come undone. It should be used when tying anything to the boat . You should be able to tie it with your eyes closed. Google it Mark and teach Fiona cos she's the rope lady.
Well that was exciting . . Plenty packed into that vid . . Not sure what yr gona get with the spear gun . I havnt seen a decent size fish . . Lol. Do you have a Patreon account? Appreciate how well you manage diversity. As a dreamer would love to see the 51 when you make the US. We think the 51 might be the perfect Nordhavn for us.
No we feel a bit awkward about that. While we do not have anywhere near unlimited resources for this adventure we do feel that a Patreon account sends the wrong message given we could afford this boat….just……in the first place. Would love to show her to you…..anytime.
Oh Mark.... one question... During your somewhat extensive cruising on Awanui NZ, have you got some data on fuel consumption? Would you estimate that Nordhavn's calculations as for the range - on full tanks - is close to 3000 NM?
Great thinking…..problem was they would not let the van go to the dock and the driver was about to leave with the panels so I had a call to make. Decided to get them out of the van which was on the side of the road. A friendly restaurant owner let me put them beside her restaurant while I got someone to help me carry them to the tender. It was too far to a dock we could get the boat to and it was almost flat calm so “gave it a go”!
Hi Mark, hopefully you know the rules for flying drones in Europe😊, be aware , in some countries is legal to shot down drones who fly without permission😅.

Mmmmm…so how come we can call a tender line a “rope” but a boats rope must be called a “line”….strange business this boating
Oh my gosh. Thank you, Renee! the drone footage is such an important part of this series. It just wouldn’t be the same without it.

Absolutely
Towing the tender is fine Mark, it’s reversing that caused this, when you get ready to anchor move the tender to the port or starboard side and secure with a taught line until you’re done.
Yip but once on previous boat we did that and tipped tender over. I think to port or starboard at bow or better still seperate with someone on it.

That is why I use floating line for the dinghy and the lines to fix the boat on the land if you Anker backwards
We used floating as well…..it was crazy

Oh Mark.... one question... During your somewhat extensive cruising on Awanui NZ, have you got some data on fuel consumption? Would you estimate that Nordhavn's calculations as for the range - on full tanks - is close to 3000 NM?
3,000 safe…4,500 theoretical
if you use the Line app it auto translates, it sometimes get thing wrong but its pretty good
True
Sorry to hear you are not coming to Scotland now.
Not sure where that came from? We are absolutely coming to Scotland!
Quick question - was there some reason you couldn’t bring Awanui NZ to the dock and load the solar panels directly onto the boat?
