- Xanto is a baby black flying-fox who was heard crying out in a backyard for 2 nights before the members of public managed to locate the source of the sound and identify that he was a baby and needed help.
He has been brought into care where he will be raised till he's old enough and ready for release in about 3 months.
He's a forthright little soul who has gone sooky for a while but is doing OK. He's going to be transferred to a carer who has a lone black pup, so the 2 can be raised and buddied together.
When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. They learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society.They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.

He is totally terrified. I don't blame him. Poor baby doesn't know he is in the safest hands. He will get the best care.

On a scale of 1 to outraged, he was pretty outraged.
To be fair, he's probably had a bad day. First, him mom goes to the store for milk and never returns. Then he's stuck in a tree. Then some weird, hairless, ugly creatures (not calling anyone here ugly, but bats probably think we're weird looking) assault him. Such a lame Christmas.

It's always a good sign if they are like that it means they are fighters and have a good chance to recover from their ordeal .
The Blacks have such a different voice to the greys. He is simply gorgeous. That juice moment though, it's perfect. The moment they realize they are safe.
Almost reminds me of a squeaky toy at some points. Adorable little guy.

He actually stopped yelling after you gave him teddy bear, that's surprising.
Its comfort, it makes it feel like it's not alone or it can hold onto something for safety. Predators dont make prey feel safe normally, so he probably realised he wasnt gonna die.
He also used up his adrenaline spike, along with realizing he wasn’t being eaten.🖤🇨🇦

He is both a bat and a flying-fox. Flying-foxes (with an hyphen, you will note) are a kind of fruit bat.
All flying-foxes are bats; not all bats or all fruit bats are flying-foxes.
He is a Black Flying-Fox
So make sure you use an hyphen to denote that this is not a fox who flies, but a type of bat.
And learn to recognise that bat is a correct term, as is flying-fox.
Bat is an umbrella term for all the microbats and the fruit bats and the flying-foxes and the blossom bats.
I love hearing the MOPs being interested and asking questions.
Growing up in Texas I knew way too many people with an “if it moves, shoot it” attitude towards animals. People actually wanting to learn more is refreshing.

Hi Sharon; I'm fairly average and very "who I am" which is not to everyone's taste.
I like doing what I do and I love to share my delight in doing this.
It's magnificent that the public cares about so much about all the animals and calls for rescue, and that there are so many trained and willing to help. I have learned so very much about Australia and Australian wildlife in the last few months, especially the bats and marsupials. I've grown to love them all, as well as their carers.

she gets an award for having to deal with that fellow's constant questions. reminds me of my dad - has to know everything and has no sense of decorum.

He's a wild baby and has been wild raised by his mum; he knows his life is not supposed to be lived out with humans; they cope less well with being hand raised and usually remain wilder, however some of them are hit really hard and grieve and mourn for their mum, then surrender to the human raising them and become very sooky.
