      Hi Mari, are you newish to my channel?
      Welcome to Megabattie.
      I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
      I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
      There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
      If you want to find more videos of a specific bat, search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat.

Seeing them fly out into the sunshine was truly beautiful, I could watch that over and over and never get tired of the sight. It is excellent to see so many of our boys, like Hawk, Woodie, Atlas and Basil on the last step to freedom. Love the red toenails on the first one. They can have pee baths and polish up their crown jewels in anticipation of their new lives.
      All of these boys (except Poseidon) will be out in the wild now. They went into the aviary 5 weeks ago and were in for 3-4 weeks before catch up and the hatch opening.
      Poseidon still needed that final check and X-ray on his thumb, the video of which I put up a week or so ago. He'll go into the next cycle.
      And Merryn now has girls in her aviary. Plus Poseidon.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  3 года назад +2

      They can only do it if the edges of the wound are continuous, i.e., like a circle or an oval. If the hole is a slash which joins an edge, there is no reason for the wound to pull itself inwards and regenerate the tissue.
      The edges just heal up and seal over, and leave it as an open slash which flaps in the breeze.

      Without being flippant - they smell like boy batty.
      It's their own individual aroma. Greys smell different from Blacks smell different from Speccies and from Little Reds.

    There was a docu on batties on ARTE (French/German culture channel) yesterday. They said batty skin heals like 4+ times faster than human skin.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  3 года назад +1

      Yes, it's amazing the speed of their healing; once the tissue stops breaking down, you'd be amazed how fast it just fills in.
      But: the membrane damage needs to be a hole with continuous edges so the healing edges can drag themselves inwards. If it's a slit which joins the trailing edge of the wing, it becomes something which can't fill in the gap, it just seals its edges and heals as a flap.

      That's a behind the scenes view of stuff you don't normally see - the catch ups, the checkups, the loading of the bats into the cages. There were so many this time it needed 2 cars to transport the cages.
      Recording the chip numbers - you don't see the record keeping prior or subsequent to this either - the transferring them from personal care to release aviary care. You don't see the weekly catchups, weights, the chip checking again. You don't see when some don't make the grade or get cage injuries, so need to be brought back into care - maybe taken to a vet. There's a lot more behind the scenes. And there are many carers doing this, overstretched and just struggling to keep up the care for all of their batties.

      @@EveHyland-in8jb9ti9y Mostly I don't do the rehab work which is why it isn't on video much. I spend more time rescuing and doing immediate care, and taking the bats to the vet.
      I don't go out to the release aviary much.

    It's really amazing how intelligent they are. They're obviously not happy at being picked up and manhandled, but they're smart enough to know you lovely folks aren't going to hurt them and they just sort of put up with it with minimal fuss. ❤️ I assume that in the wild they probably naturally wear down their pointy bits enough to keep 'trimmed', but in care they don't get enough wear and tear thus making the batty mani-pedis sometimes necessary?

    About 13:30 or a little after, am I hearing Meep in the background? Or is that my imagination?
    They are such hardy boys, they don't flinch when you clip their nails, they don't flinch when you chip them.
    Some of them are pretty large. I'm so used to seeing the tiny babies. But these dudes are so big and healthy. Yet they are so good for you, very compliant. Bats are such lovely creatures.

      It's self funded Darth. I take donations for the girls who run their own rehab aviary for fruit costs, because when she has 50 plus bats in care, it costs a few hundred dollars worth of fruit per week.

    I was wondering how they are caught when they are ready for release, is it a group effort with some stepladders and quickly shin up the ladders before they scarper off? I can imagine sometimes to catch just a particular few might be a tricky operation.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 года назад

      When I am driving bats north, I insist that the managers of the aviary find the bat I am looking for and sequester it, so I don't spend forever looking for one bat in the aviary.

      @@Megabattie yes thats a good plan. I could imagine there are some batties who are expert escape artists who could take a while to catch especially if they bury themselves in the crowd😂 then when almost caught they fly off to the other end of the aviary sticking their tongue out as they fly past😂 and on and on the chase may go plus I suspect all batties may become stressed so the operation has be put on hold for a period of time.
