I’ve actually been stung by a saddleback caterpillar when I was a kid! Reached under the trash can lid and got a nice grip of him. Ended up calling the ambulance in a panic and made that an interesting night for my family. Glad to see I wasn’t over reacting!
Women seem to have a higher pain tolerance than men. I've see it with hot pepper eating contests, as well. Monthly cramps and having babies probably make that necessary lol.
That saddle back is no joke I was replacing a door in a house that had a bush next to it and my arm rubbed up against the bush and it lit up I thought it was just the bush and continued working in the door and touched it again and got me even better the second time. Looked harder at the bush and seen this caterpillar. Seriously no fun!
Minutes ago I was pruning the brown leaves and something was stung me and it was green looking hairy caterpillar and it was small. It looks new to me so idk, however not as painful and I was calming down. For the treatment I washed my hands with soap and a duct tape. Thankfully it's gone phew!
I love saddlebacks! They look like they’re wearing a fancy blanket everywhere they go. I work at a plant nursery and saw TONS of these on the alum plants last year!
I just can’t fathom how you put yourself through this time and time again! You really are brave. Thanks for taking one for the team so we can be entertained and educated.
@@technne-gu1yu But you do know that everyone has a different perception of pain? There are people (for example) who don't feel blood tests at all and there are people who faint from the pain.
My theory is that fresh pinaple juice helped with a sting because an enzyme called bromelain that is able to break down proteins so it helps to get rid of the needles/toxins that your skin had contact with.
I was gonna say... Canned pineapple won't have the enzymes he's talking about. The test for successful pasteurization is actually the absence of enzymes.
Fun fact - where I'm from, cecropia moths aren't a local species, but they started popping up in 2013 and it even made the news. And one of my friends found one nearly the size of small puppy in his backyard. Thing was HUGE!
I think both of those caterpillars look pretty cool. The small one look like it was wearing a cool looking little vest on its back, and the larger one look like it had really nice Christmas lights on it or something like that LOL
When my sister was little she almost passed out from getting stung by that caterpillar, we had rush her to the ER. Damn caterpillar fell on her while she was sitting down the tree.
Several years ago, my wife was doing some gardening and came inside with redness and severe pain. The culprit was one small saddleback caterpillar. A year after that, I was mowing the grass and brushed against some bushes in my yard. My arm immediately started stinging. I looked at the branches and noticed a lot of Io Moth caterpillars. They are quite beautiful but very painful.
Id love to see the slow mo of the stings. Then we could start seeing what exactly is swelling. Like if all the bumps were stings or if its just due to the reaction. Knowing the difference between the two could possible come in handy in certain situations.
@@justsarahtbh I think it's comparable to a paper wasp sting, but longer lasting. The pain feels more like a cut or something than other stings - more of a sharp pain than a burning pain. I got stung by one that was on some palmetto fronds and at first I thought I had been cut by a frond.
Great video, greetings from germany, Came here because of the algorithm :D You mentioned canned Pinapple. If it grants relief due to the enzyme in pinapple, canned pinapple might not work. Most of the time canned items are cooked or at least heated up to 80°C. This destroys most of the enzymes i suppose. So you might need fresh or nearly fresh pinapple or the extracted enzymes in its dried form or so. Was just a thought. Thank you for the video!
A caterpillar that knows how to make its point. If it doesn't have a Singing Monster to represent it, it should. I never knew caterpillars were considered insects. Interesting. Oh, and adorable doggos make every video better, and this one was already really great! 💙
These types of videos are much better, when you take a sting or bite and record a lot of stuff after like hours later or into the next day & show progress of the whole thing.
I used to raise Io moths as a kid and I got stung plenty of times. I never minded the sting too much because of my fascination for the creatures, but it was painful. Nevertheless, even though I was a pretty tough kid, if I could handle it as a kid, you definitely can. As painful as the sting is, it really isn't that bad. They grow into extremely beautiful moths, and the coloration is different on the male vs the female. I love butterflies and moths.
I do like that you acknowledged the pineapple could be a placebo. The power of the mind is incredible. I will say the first caterpillar had me wincing and squinting. Glad to see that you are doing better after the pineapple!

A ripe pineapple might work better, and yes it must be fresh.
Yepp! it must be fresh otherwise the bromelain gets denatured from the heat during the pasteurization process.
