I did a 5k on the track. I don’t remember exactly but it was between 18 and 19 min, it was very unimpressive. So I never tried to inline skate on a running track again. My hockey playing got a lot better after I started running. I became one of the fastest skaters on the ice which upped my game. Hockey players should definitely get running fitness.
Who said he was ever a sub-4minute mile guy? I have 5K course records that have held up since 1993 and my best mile was 4:09. The fastest high schoolers typically can't crack into the 3minute range.
Blading is gonna start popping up at skateparks in a big way. With Covid the world saw a shortage of new skates. All skate companies are booming and production is being stepped up. Its cool again to skate. People forgot how fun it is. Personally I been at the skatepark when its dry out and blowing people minds with all the spins and grinds I can do. He still would have beat the record if he was good at skating.... He just isn't really a good skater.... not trying to be mean... nothing against him.... to be fair, I guess he is about average in terms os normal people who buy roller blades... but not even close as good a skater as someone who played in a good competitive hockey league... clearly his league wasn't that as is evidenced by his lack of skating ability....
@@jonm3024 He played years upon years upon years ago. Stop being a dick my guy. You probably don't think he went to the Olympics because his 800m time isn't up to date anymore huh,
@@gokublack5620 I played years upon years ago, haven't been playing, can still skate... But still, if you say you are good at something and then suck at it on video 10 seconds later, prepare to get called out in the comment section....
Been watching you for years and this is one of my favorite vids you've ever made. I skate almost daily around 6-9 miles @5:30 pace. Next time you're in So-Cal do a skate in Santa Monica.
Wife and I love your videos. We live in nasty, dusty, rocky Phoenix, AZ and we see the wood chip running paths in your vids and think, wow, we need to make some life changes!
Aggressive inline is back in a big way with COVID. I busted out my old blades and found I needed new ones. I got some sweet blades and been hitting up the skatepark.
I had a similar idea because I had knee problems from running last year and skating was less impact on the knees so I attempted to break some running world records myself (granted it was on asphalt instead of a track) but it was actually very easy. I skated a full marathon in under two hours. I skated a mile in 3:41. The surprising part is my running abilities are barely above average. PB running mile of 5:04. Currently 5:30. PB half marathon 1:32, most recent (pre injury) 1:38, and never run a full marathon.
You can definitely skate a sub 3 mile. The main issue is that you were using indoor wheels on a concrete-like surface, which are some of the worse wheels that you can have and is likely why you weren’t gaining much speed. If you wanted to push this to the absolute limits, then you could have bought a pair of speedskates with race bearings, which are much faster than hockey skates, but require an almost perfect form that’s extremely hard to master just for a single RUclips video. Overall, another amazing video Nick!
Haha I love it! The mile record backwards skating is 1 min 39 seconds... this is your next task. What really insane Is the pros average a 2 minute mile for an entire marathon lol
You are comparing apples to oranges. They used large wheels, speed skating boots, hard smooth surface skated by speed skating athlete. The dude in the video had zero technique. No idea how he was a hockey team captain.
@@bloodycrepe no need to be so negative. I wasn’t making a comparison at all. I was saying that the people who do inline skating go under 4 minute miles for a very long time
Smooth sailing on that 2nd half - another great video on an awesome channel!!! Throw some Vitamin D in that immunity Run Gum and you could call it anti-covid....
Love your enthusiasm 👍 If you really want to blast a mile on blades, take a look at speed skaters and try to emulate what they do. It’s quite different than hockey skating. Your form is kind of in between the two styles and you could get way more glide (+30%) by striding more side to side, keeping your weight to the rear of your blades, quiet upper body (especially on straightaways you don’t need your arms much at all), kind of “falling” back on to your leg in the air , keeping a more aero tuck, and getting the quads to do more efficient work by just letting them keep you upright and smoothly slotting the free leg into position.
More than training. I've never seen someone so horrible at skating in my life. this was cringe. No extension and drive. Almost looked like an old man with a walker, with how narrow his gate was with skates on.
My suggestion for sub 4 min mile to Nick is to use drafting. To run very close to someone who can run fast and use his body as a shield to save energy. I don't know if will be enough to run sub 4, but will be an entertaining video!
