The scheme:
In the example the number of loops are 20.
1 row - color 1 - knit loops only.
2 row - color 1 - purl loops only.
3 row - color 2 - *knit 1, sl 1*.
4 row - color 2 - purl loops only.
5 row - color 3 - *sl 1, knit 1*.
6 row - color 3 - purl loops only.
Change color and repeat from the 3d row.

sl 1 - slip 1 knit loop.
