@@mikehemens9359what? That logic doesn’t make sense. Thrasher is the only one who currently does it in America but they don’t have a monopoly on it man, award shows have many different awards.
Damn I really thought it was based off peoples votes hahaha, not mad or anything, just glad it’s cleared up for me. Sick interview, I actually watched the whole thing
Skateboarding is FUN! Thats why I started at 53 only wish I found this piece of wood earlier in my life, but hey I have it now and I still have time for fun!
Go get it. Back when I started in the 80's people looked at you sideways if you were 22 and owned a skateboard. Now the parks are filled with greybeards.
Really good one. I always kinda saw him as just a jokester, but I gained so much respect for Gary after watching this. Living in Oakland for 25 years, I understand how easy it is for kids in the East Bay to fall through the cracks. I love how he appreciates all of the help and support from the people in the skate community who kept him on the positive tip and seeing that he's using his position to do good for the community. Major props Gary. You're killing it.
Only 20 mins in and I think Gary is brilliant when he says "what were doing is hard as hell..." while explaining why he gets so hyped when he sees someone land a hard trick. People who don' skate simply don't understand how hard skateboarding is. And watching video of pro skateboarders who make it look easy helps to hide how damn hard it is. I love Skateline for all kinds of reasons but mostly because Gary is so passionate about skating that it keeps my hyped even at 48 years old. Respect.
I think it might have been Steezus that said it. Nobody said anything about T-FUNK that was my Thrasher pick that year. He put out a death defying part on Thrasher that year.
It was. But it’s kinda taken out of context. He said that only to emphasize how good that part was. It was like “if he does win after this part, pigs are gonna fly” type stuff
Never really saw much of Gary outside of skateline and some other hosting stuff but damn, he's a real one. I've got much love and respect for him after watching this, a man of the people.
Man. I cannot express enough how much I love skateboarding and the community around it. There’s so many dudes who are famous in skateboarding, not necessarily for their skills on a board, but for the contributions to the community…their commentary, filming, writing, painting, photography, music, interviewing skills, editing, etc…so cool that all the homies getting love.
But he just hates what Nike stands for. That’s why he said that about Labron but gave Jordan flowers for changing the logo and starting his own thing with/thru nike
I’m around Chris’s age and I love Gary. I really appreciate his mixing of humor with his passion for skateboarding, which people take too seriously at times
This is now my all time favorite episode❤ shout out to Gary Roger’s…your a awesome human being and your love and respect for skateboarding is amazing…keep being awesome man…mad respect
Looking back now the past SOTY winners it all makes sense why they were chosen. Gary def put it into perspective. That was emotional and very much a eye opener.
Me and Gary’s getting into skateboarding stories line up so much. THPS, Rocket Power, Jeff Hardy and jumping off shit and falling down. Great period in time.

Gary made a lot of contradicting statements throughout this whole interview lol. “I don’t let negative comments or hate on the internet affect me.” 5 minutes later “ you say something about me or my family on the Internet, make sure you leave your address too.” I’m not into Gary’s weird ego, hates on Nike, but has a job as a commentator for Street League which is sponsored by major companies. Gary is so cool man. I think he's a much needed voice/persona in skateboarding. I was dying laughing at how much he made himself laugh there at the end. I think the people in the industry that matter know he has nothing but love for skateboarding and they'll continue to support him and get his back. I feel like there is a distinct rift in how NC sees SOTY and how Gary portrays the way Thrasher feels about it. What I got was that the Club kept putting up measurements about how SOTY could be determined and then arguments about skater X or Y and why they should have gotten it. What Gary seemed to be saying was that it's not something that could be measured but for how much weight they had in Thrasher media. But the real qualifier was how someone's skating could make them feel, about how special they (THRASHER) thought it was. Not that a contender was the "best", or had the most tricks, but a sort of unquantifiable feeling that a skater could convey by the way they skated. It seemed like NC members kept hitting a wall by airing grievances about why this person or that person should have had it. Jeron's comment was especially interesting that somehow TJ had been overlooked and then Thrasher "did the right thing" and gave him props. That seemed pretty arrogant and presumptuous. At the same time Chris says they are just on the outside looking in and speculating, they then make hard and fast arguments about parameters that should have gotten someone to win and it gives an air of unqualified authority without that same exception mediating it. In any case this is a great episode. Gary is super intelligent and insightful and I thought this was a good session.
