31 years ago when I was 17 I met Ron Allen outside a skatepark in Columbus, Ohio. Me and a few buddies randomly went out of town for a week, and while we were crashing in Columbus heard there there was a demo going on at a local park. By the time we made it there the demo was over, but the park was so intimidating to me I opted to skate in the parking lot, trying to ollie over a little baby dirt gap into the adjoining lot. At one point Ron Allen came out of a side door, I think he was having a smoke. He could have minded his own business and ignored me, but instead he came over and introduced himself and asked if I liked the demo. I told him I missed it, and he was all that's too bad man, it was a lot of fun. He then watched me trying to ollie over this little gap, and was super encouraging saying stuff like you got this dude, don't give up bro! I don't remember if I made the trick or not, or exactly what Ron Allen said, but I'll always remember how positive he was and how he made me feel good about myself.
Lol this was over 30 years ago and it was my 1st time in Columbus. All I do remember is that some chick drove us there and it wasn't too far off the freeway.@@jessiemartinez3056
i went to a LIFE demo back in 1990 or 1991 ...Sheffey stayed on the phone with his old lady the entire time , Donger skated a bit , but Ron Allen skated his ass off and took time to talk to all of the kids and was super cool to all of us...hes the real deal as a person...the shop/park owner was bitching at some of the kids for talking to him outside in the parking lot without paying ...Ron straight up lit that old man's us up , lecturing him about these kids pay your bills and dont have to pay to talk to me outside the shop...Ron was so emotional going off on the old dude that he literally started crying himself while going off on the old dude ....i was already a huge fan of Ron's , but knowing hes legit as a human made him even cooler
Ron Allen has always been 100% unapologetically himself, in his skating, his brands, his music, and everything else he does. That is why he isone of my top favorite skaters of all time. True legend through and through. Thank you guys so much for getting this one locked down!
What a treat! I grew up on h-street in the 80s and Ron was always a true inspiration. A talented skater and musician. Thanks! Get the rest of h-street and Life on the show too!
15 minutes in and Ron’s energy is insane. I’ve loved that dude my WHOLE life. My first H-Street was a Ron Allen no scratch. He’s been a part of my life since I was like 12 ❤ nothing but love!
Amazing, Ron has more energy than most everyone who has sat in that chair for an interview! Such a vibrant, appreciative, productive human being. This dude is not a carbon copy of anyone else. Beautiful soul.
Ron was the first pro I met at a demo at six flags, I was probably 13. My friend was got to skate in the demo and Ron just hyped us all up. Every time I saw him at Berkeley park or around the Bay he always remembered meeting us then and commented on how much me and my friends were growing up etc. Always hyped, always so positive and encouraging. Still ripping and unabashedly himself. Thanks Ron!
Ron Allen is the only pro street skater I was lucky enough to skate with when I was younger during his H-Street time because of the skate/surf shop I was sponsored by at the time & brought him down for a demo in Miami. Thank you for the memories & the amazing energy you still have today and all the OG stories.
What a legend. Best 1 foot Ollies in the game. So funny. I loved all of it. I have 4 of his text decks on my wall so I think about Ron lots but I have been a fan since the early days and still today. Thank you for the Life video. That was epic and changed what we thought was possible on a skateboard. Ron is awesome
There is a couple of the 9 Clubs that are just epic and this is top 5 of my favorites. Big up RON ALLEN. I think I speak for all skaters and say that this man is a LEGEND.
Back in the late 80's I was a young skater living in the burbs of North London, UK. Some of my skate crew went out skating mid week and who did they come across in our random part of North London suburbs.... none other than this man Ron Allen. This was the early H-Street era they took him skating around our local area and ended up at South Bank and they came back the next day to tell the tale that I missed out on. The big one was "ahh man Ron ollied a McDonalds trash bin" in our local town centre. I was so blown away and gutted that I unbelievably missed this experience especially as Ron stay literally half a mile from my house at some little random hotel in my part of North London. Had to share this story and big up Ron Allen still skating at 61!!! I didn't know how connected he was to Sheffey who I also met around the Life era at a skatepark in Leigh on Sea Essex. Good times man good times..... CMOON PUT LOTION ON YA FEET RON!!!!!! lol
Could it have been in 90. I'm up near Liverpool, and one day in 90 I opened the local paper to see pic of Ron boardsliding back of a bench minutes from my local skate shop and my house. I phoned friends, on landlines obviously, and they didn't know what happened. Apparently the shop which was a windsurf shop that had plenty of skate stuff, had persuaded the distributors to send H Street team to my area, but it was quite short notice, and they either just didn't inform local skaters or didn't have time. It was pre mobile phone and they probably didn't have skaters numbers. The shop owner son was in my class at school but didn't skate, but I feel he could have told us. I think we may have been in school when they turned up too. It was a complete f#@k up and we were fuming. Couldn't believe it. I still have newspaper clipping of pic to remind me of what we missed. The shop didn't know where skate spots were also, so H Street team skated a bit of flatland with a crap bench that had arms, hence his boardslide on back of bench.
Ok, i started skating in 03 04 my first 2 videos where Yeah Right and Dying to live. Im 32 now been skating over half of my life, I am so blessed to have a spot w old head homies just like the tenessee ramp he was tlkn about. My friend Cletus is 56 this year he has a backyard ramp they call "the senior center" I have been skating it every thursday since I was 18. It's the best session possible skating w OGs who love this shit! They have put me on to so many things and Ron is one who I really looked into and stood out to me . What a G this was so Inspiring im in love with skateboarding and Im not going to stop! YOU BETTER LOVE THIS SHIT
Someone encourage Ron to be a part of the H-street documentary so he can tell the stories of the dark times and make sure they tell the story the right way. The filmmakers weren’t there so they NEED the actual riders to properly tell the world how things were.
I was hanging with D way , Steve Ortega, Matt H, Brennan S,. Vista had so many dudes who could have done something with skateboarding!! VERY DARK TIMES tbh
One of my favorite Nine Club episodes definitely. Could have listened to 10 hours of Ron telling stories. Ron is a super cool nice dude and street skate legend. His "Risk It" part and the Life video are classics for me that are embedded in my mind. I only wish I could obtain his awesome energy level. 🤩
Dis was 💯% my favorite interview on da Nine! Ron Allen is one of my favorite OG's. As a git, I was always compared to him and Sheffey but I'd deny Ron on da strength of a different generation not realizing until my teens how crucial his career was to skating. Satori, Yellow Brand, and Creation demo’d our hometown park when I first began skateboarding. I wasn’t there for the demo but every day of middle school, at the park that I skated, the place was still plastered with their promo stuff. I ended up riding a Creation board finally around 2014 for nostalgic purposes and it was so rad. Satori’s were on my first set up ever too. I’m pretty sure Delatorre was there for that first demo. Anyways, this episode is probably my favorite one. I’m 28 so I didn’t grow up on Ron Allen but you can help but be inspired by him. Thanks everyone

Thank you guys @9 club . Ron Allen is a GOAT and Sk8 history teacher. I gotta say LIFE a soldier story mentally changed skateboarding . I would come home and watch John Reeves, Dongers and Sheffeys part and go skate!.

Ron used to stay at my crib in NYC with the Fun team all the time. We had some great times in the early 90s.
