The audience is not board. This was filmed live on a television show & the audience was under strict instructions to remain seated & quiet during the performance. It must have really hurt the senses of every one of them.
Man I'm so glad I grew up with these bands from the 70's.

@Gary Cottam And what a belter of a performance that was too by GFR. I would have had to have jumped up through these songs if I was there. It's a force of nature.

Well thankfully they were able to control themselves and enjoy the epic performance quietly so that fifty years later we can still enjoy such a quality recording of it now. I don't think they were bored so much as transfixed.

This was live for a TV show. The TV people told the audience not to react until after the song was over because they didn't want any audience noise on the recording. That's why they were being so quiet. They were told to.

I did my seventies homework, and then I got to this damn thing and I was just WTF? I had my Deep Purple expectations, and this was something more like I'd expect from Dio. Or perhaps some Octane added to the Atom Heart Mother. Crazy creative, and DP broke their own mold. I have to see it as rock history, since I was born 5 years later.

The audience was merely awestruck into catatonia by the consummate musicianship before them. Enjoying an amazing performance like this up close and live doesn't necessarily require jumping around and screaming your approval and squealing with delight and dancing in the aisles. Good thing too, this video would suffer greatly from the white noise of the audience if they felt compelled to express themselves instead of just letting the band do its thing and make all the sounds.

A real masterpiece, you're absolutely right. By the way, I was at a Deep Purple concert in December 1970, but it was one of the last on a long tour. In the evening we found out that Ritchie Blackmore had called in sick and wasn't there at all. Also, Ian Gillan had a throat infection. So of course they couldn't play "Child in Time", the cult song we were so looking forward to. That was very disappointing. Deep Purple have nevertheless remained my favorite band. They were just too good.

I saw Deep Purple at a huge venue where most concerts were when I was growing up called The Checkerdome. It was an ice rink when our Hockey team The Blues were home. I sorta ruined it for myself. I played golf all day in the sun and drank too much beer. I sobered up and when we left, the show was good but I was really worn out. I lost $50 which was a lot of money, and still is, had a parking ticket when we got back to the car which also had a flat. I had big fat tires which you just couldn't really carry a spare for, so I had to call a friend who just happened to have a spare to fit my car. The night was a bust but I went, I saw, and I have the ticket stub to prove it! Haha! I could have done without most of it, but as I said, it was really my fault...well, some of it was. Peace!
