Ian Gillan is for me one of the greatest singers in rock history. If you have ever listened to the original Jesus Christ Superstar (the original albums, not the movie soundtrack or stage recordings), Ian sang the part of Jesus and was amazing.

Original album of Jesus Christ Superstar... Ian Gillan's best ever vocal is NOT a Deep Purple song. It's "Gethsemane", from this album.
I went to see the Arena tour of JCS, and the program notes written by Andrew Lloyd-Webber says that the role was actually written for Gillan, who he described as the "Best rock tenor in the World".
He was right.
He has been UNTIL 1975 then he blows his vocal chords and he wasn't anymore capable to sing this song for his life, David coverdale and Glenn Hughes were and are WAY better than gillan!
No other Rock singer can sing like Ian Gillan!!

I think the part of the crowd you see are behind the band and more less planted there as eye candy. Those girls are all posing in miniskirts to show their legs. I don't think they were instructed to dance.

Not only did I grow up listening. I was stationed in Germany. And saw them live.
First saw deep purple when was 15 1974 last time 2019 age 61 but felt like I was 15 again amazing vocals

You need to check out "Highway Star" . . . . . It was written in 20 minutes, on the way to a sound check for a concert that night. Perfected during the sound check AND PERFORMED THAT NIGHT.
It's nice to see newer generations appreciate this great, unfortunately underrated band.

This was new then and definitely not MOR music. That's why the TV studio audience wasn't sure how to react. You have the advantage of hearing this after all that other stuff you've heard since the 70s - and you're still impressed :) Ian Gillan on vocal chords - great singer. I'd been waiting for someone who reacts to songs to discover this one. I first heard Deep Purple more than 40 years ago. Didn't hear this song for another 30 years when I bought one of their albums. Smoke on the Water got lots of radio air time. Perfect Strangers I think is probably their best song. But this son...the is one of my favorite songs EVER. A lot of people just don't seem to "get" this song. But those of us that do tend to really, really like it.
Hammer ons and hammer offs is how he's able to play those notes with one hand.
Hold a note with your pointer finger (or barre chord position) and press down on next note with your middle, ring finger, or pinky. This is a hammer on. Reversed, it becomes a hammer off.
Pull offs bother
Zakk Wylde can play entire riffs one handed just like this.
Also important to note that, as far not picking hammer on/offs is concerned, it's easier to do live at high volume. I think sometimes people who don't play guitar see someone do it live and assume it's fake/mimed when the guitarist just uses their fretting hand to hammer on and off.
Saw them live at the NEC Birmingham UK in the eighties Ian Gillan has the best voice I have ever heard. Love Deep Purple.

You can't go wrong with Deep Purple mark 2...get the albums Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Who do we think we are and Stormbringer and take a listen. Just an incredible band of some of the finest musician's you will ever see in my humble opinion. Their live albums are also very memorable especially Made in Japan which is most of the Machine Head album.
50 years on and this majestic song is still in most good Top Lists for radio stations all over the civilised world - and deservingly so... Ian Gillan (Vocals), Ian Pace (Drums), Ritchie Blackmore (Guitar), Roger Glover (Bass) and The great Jon Lord (Keyboards) were the worlds best bands in that era.
This is up there as one of the greatest heavy rock songs ever written, been listening to it since it was released on Deep Purple in Rock and it's still as fresh and brilliant.
Remember no Purple ,Sabbath or Zeplin no heavy rock as they invented it

This song is a protest against the war in Vietnam. His vocal arias are the metaphor for him weeping. The change in tempo represents the rapid firing of battle. There is so much emotion in this song

On the musical side, there used to be this song 'Bombay Calling' by a band called It's A Beautiful Day. It was fresh and original, when Jon was one day playing it on his keyboard. It sounded good, and we thought we'd play around with it, change it a bit and do something new keeping that as a base. But then, I had never heard the original 'Bombay Calling.' So we created this song using the Cold War as the theme, and wrote the lines 'Sweet child in time, you'll see the line.'

Pure fire and saw this band several times of the decades. This song is a classic of ‘ALL TIME’...eternal.
The collective musicianship of this lineup far exceeds so many other bands. These guys weren't just looking for a girlfriend and started a band; they were endowed with legitimate talent and schooling and became famous. So glad much footage of deep purple mark II exists. Excellent that Van gives kudos to each member.
My second most loved band (the first of course is Led Zeppelin). This is the best lineup of the DP - the handsome Ian Gillan and his incredible voice, the fabulous Ian Paice, Roger Glover and his powerful bass, the keyboard wizard Jon Lord and the great Ritchie Blackmore, always with a sour face ... 🎶💜💜💜🎼
This is one of the best song in rock in general in my opinion. One of my favorite live video. It was for tv, some say it explains the crowd cause they were told not to move.

My sister used to take me on train rides to go see live shoes when I was a kid (7-8 years old). She was in her 20s by then. I LOVED the thrill and excitement of the people. And LIVE music is just SO different. She was SO COOL. She also gave me chemistry sets that got confiscated every christmas.
BTW: If you EVER have the chance to get tickets to a classical music concert. I don't care if you like the genre. But hearing that LIVE is a surreal experience. Especially in a GOOD auditorium with great acoustics. A LIFE-altering moment if it's a nice score.
Deep Purple's signature song is "Smoke On the Water" with the most iconic guitar riff in rock history. That being said, my favorite song of theirs is still "Lazy" off the Machine Head album. Give it a try. I promise you won't be disappointed.
I was 17 when Deep Purple released the Album, Deep Purple in Rock, and this was by far my favourite track on it, even now at 70 I still get a buzz from it.
I saw them in concert in 2017 and they still have it! Blew my 30 year old son away!!

I saw them twice on their 2018 tour with Judas Priest, was so blowed away the first time I had to go see it again to comprehend the greatness I seen the first time. flew 800 miles to the 2nd show, best road trip for a concert I've been on, so well worth it. Smoke On The Water, Perfect Strangers, Burn, Knockin at Your Back Door, Space Truckin, that's a good start. Enjoy your musical journey with this band. Thanks.

Agreed I seen all 3 in there big days live Purple blew the doors of Sabbath and Zeppelin. We all agreed on that. Just our opinion in the 70s. I put out a challenge to Barbra find anything from 1970 that's as good as BBC Child in Time live by any band in 1970. In front of a live TV crowd no fixing mixing afterword like that performance. I looked could not find it from those 3 bands live no mixing what you seen is what you get. Or find a live album better than made in Japan live. Peter Frampton comes alive I think is one a Kiss alive is the other I think. The song remains the same is dreadful with out the movie. @@barryrammer7906 there are several examples. Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East, Yessongs live performance, Led Zeppelin Dazed and Confused live in Denmark 1969, The Who Live at Leeds, Velvet Underground live 1969, etc.
Led Zeppelin was the band during the 70s. I love all 3 bands I guess it’s just what is your preference.

I wish it was my first reaction to this masterpiece but I've been listening to this song since I was a baby. My father played it everyday. I was born in 74 but I thought that song was created before the earth as it was my first memory as a human being on this planet. I'm still listening to it sometimes and my daughter loves it. I was quite thankful that you'all played Child in Time because I was curious about your reaction to it! I/m a child of the 60's and I loved the music from those days. As we went into the 70's and 80's the Rock songs got better and better. But the old rock songs are still the best and it's great that you like them enough to listen and review them for us out here.

This is an amazing tune, just so many different parts with the vocals and various instruments and they are all brilliant
First concert I ever went to in the 80's was a Deep Purple concert. Bad Company opened for them. Still the best concert I've ever seen. The organ player is one of a kind. The quality of it was awesome and the laser effects were incredible.

@@anyamanning9427 It was Amazeballs!!! They had this screen behind them where a laser show was projected onto. Space Truckin made it feel like you were flying through space. Then the lasers would be swung around from each side of the stage and aimed to the back of the coliseum and bouncing off of something sending the laser back across. When you looked up it looked like you were hanging upside down over a laser chessboard. And don't get me started with how that organ was being tipped on end every time he hit those keys. The whole thing was rocking back and forth. He looked like a mad scientist.
Bad Co was spectacular too. Sounded crystal clear like they were in the studio. Loved every min of it.
My friend worked for dominoes as a delivery driver. Evidently the band called for pizza delivery but their hotel was out of delivery range. They offered him free tickets if he made the delivery. When we showed up at will call the night of the concert we weren't sure if they remembered to give us tickets. We had hoped for back stage but knew we may end up empty handed. True to their word they had 2 tickets ready at will call for us. I think I was around 16 years old. It was a great time in my life.
That tour in 87 was my 2nd and 3rd shows, with the first in 85 at 16. They were my favorite band and I actually lived a dream and worked with them from 96 - 02 managing their first website and online store. I've seen them a few dozen times and they never failed to bring it!

Hearing this for the first time, the audience was probably stunned into silence and torn apart just like I still am by this haunting masterpiece. It's every war, every terrorist attack, every crazy shooting ever, and I can't help but weep inside, yet each time it starts I have to listen through to the end anyway. It's just overwhelming.

@@AGDinCA what little I remember from concerts back then was people didn't just jump up and cheer during the performance as a show of respect for the band. You saved it for the end. It started to change in the mid 70s as more bands encouraged audience participation.

I've been listening to Deep Purple since 1969, seen them in concert 5 times (they don't get to Australia too often) and they never ever get stale. So good that a whole new generation is discovering them now.

Your comment about the draws is accurate. I saw Deep Purple in 2005 as a teen, and to this day have never seen so many topless women at a concert. Hella ladies' undergarments were being thrown on stage. Their singer Ian Gillan said during the show, they've been doing this a very long time, and all the ladies in the crowd are the reason they're still doing it.
Deep Purple along with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Preist are considered the co-founders of heavy metal

Yes I found this a year later but better late than never. It was real. It was being filmed for TV and the audience was told not to make any noise or clap or anything until it was done.
Ian Gillan is one of the best singers ever and is still singing with deep purple. The guitarist Richie Blackmore is one of the best guitarists ever but no longer with band. Ian Paice the drummer one of the best and Jon Lord on keyboards as well. They were all the best on their own.
I would recommend you listen to the studio version of this, even if you don't react to it. The live version was a chance for them to improvise a bit.
In later years, Ian Gillan (Vocals) and Ritchie Blackmore (Guitar) started falling out with each other, although Ritchie fell out with quite a few people in his band over the years.
When they have been on tour quite a lot, Ian Gillan would ask for this song to be dropped to rest his voice a bit, but during the set, Ritchie would start playing the song, so Ian felt that he had to sing it as it is such an iconic tune and it would upset the crowd.
Gillan use to tease Blackmore about losing his hair. He'd call him Baldy on stage. Glover said Gillan could make Blackmore laugh harder than any other person but they'd never work together again.
I prefer Steve Morse anyway.......

Ian Gillan showed on this track why he is so revered by many heavy metal singers - the range and power he has. Age has diluted his range, but he still sings well to this day. Another track which shows how insane his range is would be "Disturbing the Priest" by Black Sabbath - he harmonizes his screams on that one.

Playing with just the one hand is a technique called hammer on/ pull off. Angus Young from AC/DC does it a lot as well
Ian Paice and Roger Glover are severely underrated when it comes to mentioning the best at their instruments. There were none better than John Lord(RIP) and Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan are always in the top 10 respectively.
guess I'm old (50) as of 2023. Listened to this in the 80s and it was amazing. Deep Purple and Uriah Heep both brought a unique hard rock with heavy organ sound. Enjoy them both. July Morning is up ther with LZ Stairway to Heaven.
