  • Pokémon have all sorts of tricks that they use to try and stand out from all the rest, but sometimes those attributes are overwhelming and take over the Pokémon's whole identity. And surprise; some of those situations don't always end up so great, so let's take a look at the worst Pokémon consumed by their gimmicks...

Fun fact: male combee being more common than females (especially in the wild) is actually the INVERSE of how it works with real bees, where there's one male (known as a "drone" and whos only purpose is to mate) for every 9 or 10 females (who are actually the ones who gather nectar)
In fact, the only time you will see a drone outside the hive is during winter, where they are KICKED OUT BY THE QUEEN TO DIE
So yeah for the normally origin-accurate gamefreak design standards it even fumbles in that department

I get how using Sneasler as a mount is a gimmick, but I don't see how the Pokemon itself is a one of the worst gimmicks. the name being Sneasler instead of Hisuian Weavile doesn't count. liking or disliking the design doesn't suddenly make a mon a gimmick. the only gimmicky thing is has is it's signature move. it's design isn't far off Weavile's. humanoid creature with sharp claws. if Sneasler as the climbing mon in PLA was replaced with an alpha Weavile, would it still be a one of the worst gimmick mons? if the answer is yes, then climbing with a mon is one of the worst gimmicks, not the mon itself. I agree with the rest of the list, but I'd replace Sneasler with something else. idk, maybe baby Pokemon. those are way more of a dex filler, than Sneasler.
if there's nothing gimmicky about it if you take it out of PLA, then the mon itself isn't a gimmick mon. Delibird, Slaking, Alcreamie(possibly), Pyukumuku and Combee will always have a gimmick no matter which game they're in. every pokemon design has a gimmick. Duraludon looks like building, Hitmonchan looks like a boxer and so on. if a design by itself is a "gimmick", then this should've been a top 6 worst Pokémon.

    • @johntaylor1189

I totally agree. I don’t really care for sneasler personally, but I don’t see any gimmick around it. It doesn’t have a unique typing and most Hisui original Pokémon have a signature move. It is the one who climbs in PLA but I don’t think it is defined by that. That would be like saying weerdeer is a gimmick because it runs. I don’t think they even bothered to program rock climb into the game which would have really gone with the whole “gimmick”. Sneasler may be a kinda ugly mon, but it is not a gimmick Pokémon.

I think Silvally counts as a gimmick Pokémon: it's a poor man's Arceus, with a similar ability, that's outranked by its pre-evolution in competitive play, I believe, due to Type: Null (which has the same base stats, except for Speed) having better defences with Eviolite.

Personally, I really like Alcremie because of the many different forms it has (I’m also trying to get a shiny one right now), but at the same time, I also feel like it also has way too many forms, and as someone who’s trying to get every Alcremie form, I feel like it takes way too long to try to do that.
As for my least favorite gimmick? I’d have to say Ash-Greninja. I love regular Greninja, but Ash-Greninja’s design is kind of ugly in my opinion. I also find it weird how Greninja is the only Kalos starter to get a new form, when I feel like they could’ve at least given Chesnaught and Delphox Mega Evolutions to go along with it

I do love Alcremie, though I perfectly understand it seeming a bit daunting with how many forms it has.
Regarding Ash-Greninja. I don't mind how it looks, it is still fairly cool. I just wish Delphox and Chesnaught got something as well. Not having megas for the starters of the region megas debut in, unfortunate, but whatever. When they finally do get something, it ends up less they and more just it. I get the anime portraying it as a super rare phenomena, and an excuse for Ash to compete with megas. But for the players of the games, would it really be that difficult to give a battle bond for the other two?

We definitely have different opinions, I love Sneasler’s design & I’m a fan of the different Alcremie forms. Not everything needs a function, sometimes a cosmetic difference is all you need. When I was a kid, I wanted Pokémon to come in different colors, seeing the different variants that sometimes popped up in the anime interested me & part of why I got into shiny hunting when I was older but with Alcremie, you can have whatever flavor you want from what exists. I save before I spin mine & I look up the accurate time of day & all that to get my desired flavor. If I mess up, I close out & try again. Getting the sweets can be a bit of a pain but makes it more exciting. When they had the Milcery raid event, I played in it a lot to collect up the different sweets, I even got my desired ribbon sweet since it’s my favorite color, purple, & used it on a shiny because black, white, & purple is an awesome color combination.

An example might be Mudsdale; it HAS a gimmick with Stamina but it doesn't revolve solely around that one trick and could have been a separate Pokemon designed without it. Sneasler would never have been thought up if they didn't need to go up a cliff.

I have to agree, slow start is DEFINITELY the worse ability. Sure, being able to move only every other turn is bad in a game where you really don't want to give your opponent free turns if you can avoid it, but being nerfed for the first 5 turns of battle is even worse, since not only is it difficult to stall out those turns waiting for the effect to wear off, but it should also be noted that if Regigigas for some reason is forced to switch out, the ability is reset and you have to wait through 5 MORE turns if you want to get it back to fighting shape. It's so bad that it has managed to keep Regigigas from ever being good competitively, where as Slaking has actually had at least 1 generation where it was kinda decent despite the drawback of truant

Since I was a kid, I've seen pokemon as a kind of idealized world, one where humans have learned to harness technology to live in harmony with the world and the other sentient beings who inhabit it.
The frankenstein fossils kinda upend that narrative. Here we have an incompetent scientist who creates genetic abominations who, the pokedex clearly points out, are in constant suffering because of their incompatible biology.
But what comes of it? The scientist isn't slammed with ethics violations, the trainer treats it as any other pokemon when it clearly requirea medical intervention because it's constantly suffering frostbite or *struggling to breath*' and it's all played off as a joke/frankenstein reference.

Slaking has a pretty funny story behind its creation that Did You Know Gaming covered in their gen 3 video. According to the pokemon designer, vigoroth was made to be energetic, and then Slaking was done as its evolution to say, "it decided against being energetic after all" - so Vigoroth was always intended to be the odd evo out, interestingly enough.
As for Sneasler, it's a reocurring theme in Hisui that pokemon exist that didn't later, and their temperment is markedly different to Sneasle/Weavile. Can be assumed that they evolved down the line to be more violent to survive in current Sinnoh.

To be completely honest I actually like Sneasler more than I do Weavile. Its claws are 10X cooler looking than Weavile's and it feels more like an actual evolution of Sneasel to me. It's got a great personality too! I also love how they turned Sneasel's head feather into a ponytail, that's so clever! Sneasler also keeps Sneasel's chest gem which is something that Weavile doesn't do for some reason and now I can't unsee it.

While it has not been a huge thing people have asked for and the number of people have been on the low end. I do remember people in the past asking for more customizable Pokemon or have Pokemon have more colors, like in a certain old Stadium game, before shiny Pokemon became a thing. In that game, depending on nicknames, you could have a different colored Pokemon, and many Pokemon had many different colors to "choose" from.
I feel like Alcremie could be a call back to that game and a test run of a possible method that would allow what some players were wanting. I remember when I first saw the wild areas and thought the same, that they were a test bed to see how people would react to an area, or the possibility, to be more or less free to explore without being a true route. And they expanded that with the expansions. People loved it, and now S/V are going to be fully open world like that.
So, while I may most likely be wrong on Alcremie's case here, it feels to me that these are the reasons they made Alcremie the way they did. And making it a creme/cake Pokemon would help cheat the reason for the colors better.
