  • I love abilities in Pokémon, and of course a new generation brings plenty of new ones to figure out, however while some of them are great others are quite questionable, so let's see which of the new Gen 9 abilities are the best and the worst in Scarlet and Violet!

To be frank, this is coming from the same person who put lingering aroma as the number one worst ability, all because of the Pokemon it's on. Sure, maybe the Pokemon they gave it to doesn't particularly benefit from it that much, but it's still a decent ability, regardless of rather or not it's just a repeat of an existing ability with a different name. Because of that, I'd personally say that the ability shouldn't be on the worst list at all, and even if it somehow does deserve to be (which I don't think it does, all things considered), it shouldn't be at the #1 spot

Well baked body: provides a fire immunity which is great for switch-ins. Given to a fairy type so that apparently makes it bad.
Thermal Exchange: Does not change effectiveness of fire attacks (edit: but prevents burns), grants attack boost. Is on a Dragon/Ice type with sub-par def and sp. def, so it's apparently good.

Well baked body is actually really useful, especially since dachsbun gets body press, so switching into an incoming fire move not only deals no damage, but also raises your defense, so your body press gets stronger. Fidough losing a weakness and getting that immunity to fire types is helpful and Fidough actually gets quite a few non-fairy moves so hitting back with a non-fairy move isn’t hard. Plus the game mechanics is they will test the fire move on Fidough because of the weakness (and not knowing what the ability is until after it is activated) so you can actually block a lot of fire type moves thanks to this Good Dog.

Ok so, this is coming from competitive player and will not take into account how great abilities are in main game (they are so easy almost anything works tbh) but purely from pvp angle and I disagree with a lot on this list.
First of all, Well baked body is not bad ability by any stretch of imagination. Having imunity is always good and saying "Oh its not good since fire resist fairy" is not really that relevant since first of all it has ways to deal with them (Stomping tantrum and body press, especially if it gets +2 defense) and second, its like saying "oh, water absorb is bad on mantine and flash fire is bad on Typhlosion since they both resist thsoe types". That doesnt matter since taking no damage is better than taking low damage plus you get benefit from that, and on top of that Well baked body makes you imune to will o wisp which is also nice.
Slight nitpick on Protean, while its cetanly worse its not really all that bad it jsut pushes gren (or meowscarada) into choiced set, which is a nerf but not that big one.
Wind rider while nice in theory falls short in practice as it mostly beneftis from being imune to hurricane which while nice is just too situational to be good, sure you can set tailwind but Brambleghast is jsut not worth runing just for that, especially with other mons that can setup way easier and are stronger. Now this maybe has potential for next gen if any better mon gets it, for now it is just meh at best.
Armor Tail is similar, while not bad at all it's just slightly better quenly majesty or dazzling, it's fine but situational, it blocks first impresion and sucker punch which makes it better but it's nothing that special. It is better in VGC to block opposing fakeouts, but thats about it.
Opportunist I would argue is straight up bad ability, sure it works vs AI and new players but experienced player will have that in mind and not mindlessly boost, what doesn't help taht pokemon which learns this ability also has speed boost, which is one of the best abilities in entire game and has abismal attacking stat meaning even if it copies pokemon that used swords dance it cannot use anything with it, and if that was not enough best setup pokemon right now are boosting with protosynthesis which cannot be copied anyway. In short its way way too situational and depends too much on your opponent actually providing you stats to copy. If you want to copy boosts just use Ditto instead.
Also I am shocked you did not mention Good as Gold which is one of the best abilities ever released which makes goldhengo able to block all hazard removal, being imune to any status and even thigns like leech seed.
Or puryfing salt which makes Gargabacl imunte to status, which is big for it since it wants to stack Iron defense and being unable to be toxiced is huge for that, on top of granting it free ghost resist
Anyway, this is just my competitive view on those, but Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this is jsut my personal take on them and respect your list.

I think u underestimate the usefulness of immunities in competitive Pokémon. One rly important aspect of competitive is switching ur Pokémon around to take the least damage possible from incoming hits. For example, let’s say we start the battle and my Pokémon is 4x weak to ground, and the opponent sent out a ground type Pokémon. Well, this isn’t a problem if we have a flying type Pokémon on our team bcuz we can just switch to that instead and not take any damage.
Fire is a very strong and common offensive type right now, and there aren’t any types naturally immune to it. Well-baked body is a pretty decent ability imo bcuz it gives Dachsbun the ability to consistently shut down fire type attackers and increase the number of hits it can sponge up in the process.

I think the nerfs to Geninja are the most bizarre. Like, those two abilities are hidden abilities so it's unlikely to have them anyway. The Protean nerf is meant more for Meowscarada (plus Kecleon gets it, too), and it was indeed an OP Ability before.

I think im with everyone else when it comes to well baked body, it complements Dachsbun's strength's (mainly it's high defence) by letting it raise it's defence by 2 stages while also letting it be immune to fire, which is always nice.
Being immune to a type of which most of it's moves are "special in nature" is also good for it since it's main strengths is it's physical defence.
It also gets body press which suits it and it's ability well, together letting it hit hard and take hits on the physical side well.
Dachsbun isnt necessarilly meant to be a hard hitting sweeping menace but instead more of a tanky pokemon, BUT it can become a hard hitter if it gets a boost to it's defences by soaking up a fire type move that one of it's allies would have taken, letting it use a powerful body press.

Well, being resistant to some wind moves (and only 6 out 16 of them are resisted by Electric types, of which only 5 of them do damage) also means you'll be more likely to tank them and then get off that super powered Electric attack. As for the likelihood of them being used against you, you just have to switch into a Pokémon that is likely to use it on its next turn. That's one of the best strategies behind switching Pokémon!
Besides, it's a moot point, since the only Pokémon that get Wind Power are Electric/Flying types, so they take normal damage from Flying type attacks in the first place.

In almost any ability on Showdown I gave my Iron Moth (4x weak to ground) Earth Eater. It’s really not much but I guess it confuses someone?? (Also to deal with said ground types if they stay in after figuring out that I have Earth Eater, I gave Iron Moth Energy Ball. It’s the most rounded member out of my Almost Any Ability team, despite not having a stab fire move.
