  • With factory 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion, 30 spline axles and limited slip, the Explorer chassis need very little to become the best DIY swap frame.

      Thanks. While I have my axle cart in the shop (see the latest video 😊), I think the next video will be getting the 8.8 cleaned up and mounted under the 57.

      Are you doing a frame swap or a body swap?

    I saw that in one second of seeing the frame. Great info…

      It seems like this frame was made for a trailing arm suspension.

    Interesting process thanks for showing us it’s easy enough for the average guy to do-just requires a little thought. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this build.

    The truck arm rear suspension is still used in nascar with great success.add a watts link instead of a panhard bar,cant get no better or reliable susp.

      😊 When you have a good design don't mess with it. I really like the simplicity and strength of this design. I am working on a jig to fab new arms. All of mine are pretty rusty.

    Have you ever seen one of those old Chevy trucks going down the road with either worn or no rear shocks? It’s funnier than hell.

      Pretty unsettling if you happen to be the driver and you have a load in the bed. 😊 Makes you appreciate what the shocks are there for.

    Valuable information for attempting a similar build. Do they have drop spindles for explorers? I am not seeing any advertised online.

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  5 месяцев назад +1

      I have not seen drop spindles for the 4WD. I think that you would need to replace the 4wd spindles with 2wd spindles to get lowering spindles. I have not done this swap but I think that they will swap. You would lose 4wd (RWD only) and need to change the wheel hubs also.

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  5 месяцев назад +1

      Ok...You learn something new every day. Since where I live the roads can be a little rough, I don't think too much about lowering my trucks. I assumed that the aftermarket would have produced a drop spindle. However, I have not located a source for dropped spindles. If someone has a source post it here. After studying the spindle design, it may be challenging to raise the spindle 2" with the original Ford design.

    Why wouldn’t you just use a 2006 Ford Explorer frame which is 113.7” L x 60.9” Frt and 61.8” Rr compared to the 114” x 60” of a ‘53 Ford??? That’s exactly what I’m doing and I get the added benefit of a full IFS suspension, disc brake setup, 8.8 rear and the 4.6L V8 3V engine.

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  Месяц назад

      Personal preference. A solid rear axle 8.8 is very low maintenance, reliable, and easy to find. I also like the simplicity and reliability of the trailing arm suspension.
      While I won't argue with the 4.6l engine's reliability (from my experience), it is an extremely wide engine. It is at the bottom of my list for swap engines for the projects that I have going. The exception, I have a '31 Ford coupe that I think would look really cool with the valve covers of a 4.6l sticking out of the sides of the hood.😁
      I am curious. What engine management and instrumentation system do you plan to use? Factory Ford? Aftermarket? Carb?

  • @mehGyver

    I figured the Ford Explorer trackwidth would be narrower than a Chevy truck. What year chassis was the donor?

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  9 месяцев назад

      Thie frame is a 1996, but I think 1995-2000 are the same. The wms to wms on the explorer is 59.5. The 1955-59 is 62". Since I want to use wider rims, I don't think the 1 inch per side is a problem.

    Why not use the chevy frame cab mounts

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  6 месяцев назад +1

      In general, I just use the prothane universal mounts. That way I don't have to remember what cab mounts I used on each project. I usually have a set or two in the tool box.

    1/2 ton hood and fenders are shorter arent they?

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  10 месяцев назад

      I think that the 1/2 ton hood is mostly taller because the fenders are shorter top to bottom. The two hoods are laying within 10 feet of each other,. I will put them side by side and check out the lengths tonight. Thanks.

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  10 месяцев назад

      I just measured along the side of both hoods they seem to be the same length. They appear to be the same dimensions overall, 😊😊
