Ugh these recipes remind me when I was first on weight watchers with my mom when I was 13 :( a lot of rice cakes, egg whites and fat free cool whip, just looking at low cal "diet" food makes me sick now
konjac or shirataki is actually used more (and usually tastes more appropriate in) Asian-style noodle dishes. I used to have them a lot at the end of hot pot to make a quick noodle soup. It just isn't really meant as a replacement for, like, western pasta.
I haven't seen the video yet but I had to come here to say I watch Abbey from time to time but now I had to come here and subscribe after seeing a delusional video from Freelee 😵 Had to give Abbey some love because I can't believe how anyone can be supportive of Freelee's message. Abbey, thank you for what you're doing and keep at it! ❤
Ugh, ice as the first ingredient in that “pudding” had me triggered 😂 they have a perfectly good base with the yogurt and almond milk. Adding fruit and nut butter sound makes so much more sense and seems much more “healthy” than sugar free chocolate syrup and jello pudding🤢
I personally have a high cholesterol genetically, so if I’m choosing the cheese, I can’t do the yolk of the egg as well. They are both too high in cholesterol and it gives me really bad heartburn. Not sure why that person did so, but just a reason as to why one could do that.
You should remake these recipes using your own suggestions. This is the same idea I had when I watched your video about making and reviewing RUclipsrs breakfasts.
Hi Abbey!!!! Another elder millennial here. I used to watch a ton of .... well, let's call them bad ... "bad" videos on youtube and tumblr back in the day, hungry and sad. NOW I am watching you daily :) I have a _whole_ grapefruit cut up, two slices of Dave's Killer White Bread Done Right (something I would have not let myself eat before) and real peanut butter for that good fat and protein. I love grapefruit but for some reason, was told only half was ok. I love crunchy peanut butter on soft white bread. Yes it sticks to the roof of my mouth. Yes I like it. "Moving On" :P I am enjoying this SO much. I have made so much progress from your videos in a few months than I have in over 16 years of recov/relps. Thank you Abbey. So so so so much for making content and sharing your thoughts and wisdom with us. You have changed my LIFE and now my future.
I love what you said about the chocolate sauce. In my own health journey, I've struggled to find "healthy swaps" here and there that were as tasty as the regular product. I would probably feel the same as you about that sauce! I started making my own "dessert hummus," though, to eat instead of Nutella, and I keep making it because it's TASTY in addition to being more nutrient-dense than some other chocolate spread options.
@@jungkookssecretaccount6421 1 can chickpeas, 1/3 cup each tahini, unsweetened cocoa powder, and maple syrup (less if you don't want it as sweet; agave might work too), a dash of vanilla (optional; I forgot it this last time and it tasted fine) and 1/4 cup almond milk. Use a blender or food processor to mix until smooth. Store in the refrigerator.
Some of these comments 🤦🏼♂️. I think one can enjoy rice cakes even they don’t count or care about calories, but just like it. I love Diet Coke more than regular Coke because is not as sweet. Don’t judge or think think all these calories or sugar free stuff is for diet culture people only.
I liked the idea of the rice cake recipe. I’m celiac, and tend to use rice cakes as a PB delivery system. Beefing it up with some yogurt hadn’t occurred to me. I’ll have to give it a try as a post workout snack!
@@AbbeysKitchen me too, but often I hear that we should wait certain period of time after a meal before eating fruit..sometimes I prefer fruit instead of chocolate :)
I think it depends on your body and what the meal is. I can't eat fruit after meals cause my stomach hurts. Also depends on the fruit cause if it's cherrys I eat so many that I just consider them as one meal, usually breakfast.
I’m struggling really badly through an ED relapse and your videos have helped me keep more of a level head with my irrational beliefs/fears about food. And I love your sense of humor too. Thank you.
It’s not that we can’t “digest” more, (and btw even 40 would be a stretch, more like 20-30 is optimal) but it’s that that’s the max for protein muscle synthesis.
My mom made Cool Whip ice cream sandwiches growing up! It was always regular Cool Whip, not FF. She always added some pudding powder to make them chocolate, or more vanilla flavored than just Cool Whip. I think we even used chocolate graham crackers one summer. Those may not be a thing anymore though 🤷🏻♀️ Also, 13:18 - That’s what she said 😂😂
Hi Abbey, can you make a video on how to go about intuitive eating while having different 'issues'? Like I am a type 1 diabetic, which makes my body scream for super whenever my glucose is low. But listening to my body will be the worst thing to do, as the dextrose I will take will work faster if there is nothing in my stomach to delay the digestion (according to my doctors)
That was fun to watch. I love your facial expressions and sound effects and those The Office inserts LMAO!! I'm still not on TikTok so thanks for sharing because I only see what others show me. I don't think I'd try any of those recipes to be honest.
I dont know what kind of noodle replacement was being used for the low calorie alfredo, but I will say that for certain meals I like using these shirataki yam noodles that i get from the asian market by me. There sold as individual packs with two servings and ill buy two and theyre more of an after thought to me, i maybe eat a serving once every five months so its not like im throwing them in every other meal that I eat. I also tend to pair them with very rich saucses like thick peanut sauces. I think things like low calorie noodle substitutes can be incorporated in a heathy diet if theyre enjoyed in a healthy manner
You can buy ice cream treats that actually taste good instead of the graham cracker and cool whip snack... like I have some ice cream treats in my freezer right now that are 100 calories (and also some that are more!) edit: I should have waited to comment because the recipes just kept getting...worse...
As someone only a few months into recovery and diving deeper into intuitive eating as a key to long term recovery.... this video really cemented the values of eating satisfying meals! Not just satisfying to my body but to my palate and mind. So many of these were similar to restrictive meals and snacks i had before ...and heck I'd have half the portion of some of these. So nice to finally celebrate foods tasting good all the time!!!
@@rae2626, I've tried, but they're like Styrofoam or cardboard. I just can't do it. The texture is wrong. I'd, however, enjoy Nabisco Good Thins. Those crispy crackers with guacamole are delicious.
I think the most "triggering" part of this video was seeing the frozen cool whip. My mom would buy a new tub everytime we did strawberry shortcakes or a pie and then throw it in the freezer. So we literally had several half tubs of frozen cool whip on hand ALL THE TIME!!! I ate so much frozen cool whip as a kid. Thanks for the vid abbey, love everything you do. My dietetic hero!!!
Konjac needs to be boiled to remove the smell before use. In japanese cooking It is used as another ingredient to the dish (like in nabe, and nabe are life in winter!) It can soak flavour if marinated for long enough.
I'm glad you weren't just shitting on these recipes just because of them being diet, because that's what a lot of people would do, because a lot of "diet" recipes are good and sometimes I even like them better. Like that eggwhite wrap omelette thing is amazing, with just ham, cheese, salt and pepper, love those! Handy for meal prep too. It's all subjective (for example i don't like rice cakes, pb or shirataki noodles haha)
I was looking at the label on my sparkling water which said 0 calories per serving and then 10 calories for the entire bottle. I appreciate this explanation so much.
I actually love rice cakes and I’ve had them since I was a kid (idk if this is because I’m oriental and coeliac). I’ve never seen powdered peanut butter or that chocolate syrup (maybe because I’m British). Idk what cool whip is.
I'm Irish but to the best of my understanding cool whip is like a whipped cream substitute? I also grew up on rice cakes! In my case because my hippie mum knew they were healthy and all natural. Rice cakes with peanut butter made from 100% peanuts. Yum!
So I understand the point of this video was to test out "diet snacks". But watching Abbey nonchalantly, and realistically eat the foods she used to eat when deep in her ED was quite helpful. Thanks Abbey. The way you so naturally aproached these (triggering?) foods displayed how our relationship with certain foods can evolve for the better.
In actually traumatized after watching freelee the banana girl’ recent video about you.....but, it finally gave me a chance to once and for all unsubscribe from her channel that started my disordered eating 10 years ago. She’s down right dangerous.
I actually do get these products. They are great for people like me with the opposite kind of eating issues than what you have recovered from. Like quantity over quality is ( unfortunately ) my relationship with food, as much a a little but if cream would be nicer it's not the way I can eat. Think it's interesting how we are all different and find different things triggering! Love your videos, saving so many peoples lives!
Being on a calorie deficit (which is the only way to lose weight) is really hard. Some people wouldn't be able to do it without those substitutions. Glad for you if you prefer to have less of the real thing (like cream) and can stick to it, some people would rather have something different, but the same amount as they normally would eat, to feel satisfied. You're doing some serious shaming here - and you don't even realize how toxic this behavior is. I can imagine a person trying to lose weight watching this and feeling bad about themselves because they can't stick to one serving of "real" cream while you shame the alternative they could have enjoyed without disrupting their journey.
Seems like the more popular she gets the more shaming she does. Not sure how a dietician doesn't seem to understand that diets aren't a one size fit all thing. She views everything through HER past
FYI - the miracle noodles are from an asian ingredient, and I find are a great substitute for Asian noodle dishes, especially if you struggle with gluten - particularly Asian soups. The whole "miracle" noodle marketing is really the whitewashing of an ingredient in order to sell more of it...
Konjak is actually a very normal side-dish ingredient in Japan, I was disgusted by the smell at first as well. Instead of mixing it with something like cheese tho, it's way better consumed if you prepare it traditionally japanese with soy sauce/dashi base or with a little spice or sesame oil added. Just examples. In that case, the smell is still there, but it's not fighting with the other ingredients. It is also put into stews, hotpots or long slowly boiled vegetables, where the smell will cease and the Konjak will absorb all the flavor around it. Not really for nutrition, but mainly a textural experience, because it won't lose it's gummylike texture no matter how long you cook it for. Konjak has been eaten by japanese people for centuries and even though it's extremely complex to produce, they still go on doing it until this day. Also, the smell will get a little weaker if you let it sit in water for a while instead of rinsing it (don't know if I'd advise for that with that weird noodles though, seems like there are other ingredients mixed in as well). I used to work in a kitchen at a restaurant in Japan and the chef there told me because Konjak is made from a root, there will be starches coming out if you let it sit in water (just like with potatoes for example).
Hey Abbey. I think you should consider changing the video title. I don't think traumatized is a word that should be thrown around lightly. It's a legitimate mental health situation.. kind of like how we shouldn't say I'm so OCD or I'm so bipolar when you actually aren't. Thanks.
@@hanah32465 Abbey has always been pretty vocal about suffering & recovering from a eating disorder & she was pretty clear that the foods reminded her of her of those times. Rice cakes: I like them straight up, especially the seaweed flavor. I will also toast them with butter (real butter) or I'll make open faced toasted cheese sandwiches out of them. I probably buy a sleeve twice a year, though. I won't be eating faux chocolate. The Cool Whip thing. I loathe Cool Whip. Sorry, I really don't consider that to be "food", and it tastes lousy to me atop that. Egg wrap: I'd eat that but with the whole eggs, would let the cheese MELT, and yeah, I'd use a knife and fork. Basically, a rolled up omelet. Oh, the pickle is wrong, it goes on the side if you really want a pickle... Those white yam / kojac noodles - I really really like them, and don't think they smell bad at all. I like their texture, but they don't have much flavor of their own. They're excellent in Korean japchae. I don't eat them that often, probably once a month. The recipe you made with them doesn't appeal to me at all. This made my day 😂😂😂 as a gen z, I personally stay off tiktok to avoid these asinine recipes and horrific weight loss/diet culture videos. I used to follow recipes like these during such a restrictive phase in my life. Now they just piss me off 😂 but I think I may try the ice cream sandwich one with actual cream and gf gram crackers (cause I’m celiac) and I think that would be a great summer treat especially rolled in cinnamon and sugar!
That sounds great!
I love how u are low-key annoyed the whole vid. That's the mood I wanted to see...
😂yup!
I am very new to your channel but I already feel like I need to thank you, I've been in ed recovery for about 7 years but recently during the pandemic I felt myself slipping into behaviours I don't like, your videos are amazing and remind me how far I've gotten, thank you so much!! 💓💓
You should do a “I react to what my subscribers eat in a day.” So you can give us tips on how to eat better :)
I have a series on my channel doing this! ruclips.net/video/vGjQnZzH0SE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Fkc-nUPasPs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/nDMKWlIIIgU/видео.html
I've always wondered if TikTok recipes were any good. I feel like you just took 4 for the team 🤣❤️ thank you, Abbey.
Glad it was helpful!
Ugh these recipes remind me when I was first on weight watchers with my mom when I was 13 :( a lot of rice cakes, egg whites and fat free cool whip, just looking at low cal "diet" food makes me sick now
Oh no, I'm sorry 🙁
My skinny Mom took me to first weight loss center at age 12. She was upset that I was fat at 126 pounds.
Now I'm 57 and 226
konjac or shirataki is actually used more (and usually tastes more appropriate in) Asian-style noodle dishes. I used to have them a lot at the end of hot pot to make a quick noodle soup. It just isn't really meant as a replacement for, like, western pasta.
Hey Abby, could you do a video on how to avoid overeating/undereating?
I will put this on my list to discuss!
I know 😫
what's the point of leaving out the egg yolk if you're going to add ham and cheese?
I personally have a high cholesterol genetically, so if I’m choosing the cheese, I can’t do the yolk of the egg as well. They are both too high in cholesterol and it gives me really bad heartburn.
Not sure why that person did so, but just a reason as to why one could do that.
Egg whites are pure protein whereas egg yolk contains healthy fat. In this case, they’re going for very high protein hence omitting the yolk 😁
You should remake these recipes using your own suggestions. This is the same idea I had when I watched your video about making and reviewing RUclipsrs breakfasts.
Great idea!
Hi Abbey!!!! Another elder millennial here. I used to watch a ton of .... well, let's call them bad ... "bad" videos on youtube and tumblr back in the day, hungry and sad. NOW I am watching you daily :)
I have a _whole_ grapefruit cut up, two slices of Dave's Killer White Bread Done Right (something I would have not let myself eat before) and real peanut butter for that good fat and protein.
Totally, I'm glad that was helpful!
Recipe please 🥺
@@jungkookssecretaccount6421 1 can chickpeas, 1/3 cup each tahini, unsweetened cocoa powder, and maple syrup (less if you don't want it as sweet; agave might work too), a dash of vanilla (optional; I forgot it this last time and it tasted fine) and 1/4 cup almond milk. Use a blender or food processor to mix until smooth. Store in the refrigerator.
I'll have to try it with carob powder. I'm glad I can finally have a dessert humus!
Yes for sure!
I liked the idea of the rice cake recipe. I’m celiac, and tend to use rice cakes as a PB delivery system. Beefing it up with some yogurt hadn’t occurred to me. I’ll have to give it a try as a post workout snack!
I hope you enjoy it!
Hi Abbey, love your channel! What are your thoughts on eating fruit after a meal? Kind Regards
Fruit was always dessert i my house. My dad called it, "natures candy".
I love fruit after a meal!
I looooooove cool whip. I didn’t know it was a “diet” thing lol I just eat it with a spoon
Glad you enjoy it!
I’m struggling really badly through an ED relapse and your videos have helped me keep more of a level head with my irrational beliefs/fears about food. And I love your sense of humor too. Thank you.
And I can’t believe I wasn’t subscribed, cause I watch every upload! Fixed that ❣️
I'm so glad they've been helpful for you ❤️
'They taste like unhappiness' reminds me of Uncle Roger's 'vegetable taste like sad'
😂
The egg white wrap was hilarious :D Kept me thinking: what's wrong with a good classic omelette?
The protein pudding contains 50 g protein, I thought however that the human body could only digest 40 g protein max?
It’s not that we can’t “digest” more, (and btw even 40 would be a stretch, more like 20-30 is optimal) but it’s that that’s the max for protein muscle synthesis.
@@AbbeysKitchen wait so why do most nutritionists/dietitians recommend 1g*kg or even 2g*kg? For satiation?
@@dianavales that’s the recommendation for a full day. In one meal it’s 30 max.
My mom made Cool Whip ice cream sandwiches growing up! It was always regular Cool Whip, not FF. She always added some pudding powder to make them chocolate, or more vanilla flavored than just Cool Whip. I think we even used chocolate graham crackers one summer. Those may not be a thing anymore though 🤷🏻♀️
Also, 13:18 - That’s what she said 😂😂
Sounds awesome!
I struggle with this too as a type 1 diabetic. Especially the "meal times" are just noooo leave me alone diabetes and just let me eat when I want to
I will put this on my list to discuss! I have a video that you might find helpful: ruclips.net/video/MTqYd7Ma394/видео.html
Wow I’m so early!! Love your channel, Abby! It’s helped me with my recovery so much ❤️
I’m so glad!
Makes me so happy to see you cook 💖
Aw thank you!
Buhahaha the sound you made about the egg whites had me rolling 🤣 I agree holding egg white. Bleck!
😂😂
Abbey’s disgusted face in the thumbnail 😂😭
😂😂
i have bad anxiety and abbeys videos really calm me down
Never in my life have I been more disgusted than when those noodles fell on the colander
😂
I am loving the office references throughout your videos! 😂🙌🏼
“Tastes like unhappiness to me” - I couldn’t agree more 😂
😂
That was fun to watch. I love your facial expressions and sound effects and those The Office inserts LMAO!! I'm still not on TikTok so thanks for sharing because I only see what others show me. I don't think I'd try any of those recipes to be honest.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Love the new intro by the way! 🥰
Thanks!
You can buy ice cream treats that actually taste good instead of the graham cracker and cool whip snack... like I have some ice cream treats in my freezer right now that are 100 calories (and also some that are more!)
edit: I should have waited to comment because the recipes just kept getting...worse...
Yes totally!
I'm so glad it was helpful!
I LOVE THIS WOMAN SO MUCH 😂
Aw thank you! ❤️
Omg your reaction/memes for the egg white wrap had me on the floor 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No, just no. I am NOT eating those cardboard rice cakes. Ugh. That's just sad!
i love them😰
I actually love the chocolate and apple cinnamon flavors. It's like popcorn balls without the annoying husks.
I like rice cakes. You should try the brown sugar one, or the ones with FLAVOR lmao
Agreed!
@@rae2626, I've tried, but they're like Styrofoam or cardboard. I just can't do it. The texture is wrong. I'd, however, enjoy Nabisco Good Thins. Those crispy crackers with guacamole are delicious.
I just have to say, your videos are so calming and relaxing for me. They literally give me so much comfort for some reason.
Aw I'm so glad ❤️
I’m gonna go eat a vegan magnum ice cream after watching the fat free cool whip ice cream😂😂😭
So informative!! I love this channel so much😍🥰so real!
Sounds great! I'm so glad it's helpful for you 😊
I think the most "triggering" part of this video was seeing the frozen cool whip.
I'm sorry if it was triggering for you, but I'm glad you still found the video helpful! ❤️
@@AbbeysKitchen I was joking about the triggering, My sarcasm is off even when I speak it.
I adore rice cakes. I can eat them with things, or on their own. I will never say no to rice cakes lols
Glad you enjoy them!
Konjac needs to be boiled to remove the smell before use. In japanese cooking It is used as another ingredient to the dish (like in nabe, and nabe are life in winter!) It can soak flavour if marinated for long enough.
Alternate title: "Abbey's Bad Diet Food Mukbang"
😂yup!
LOL
I'm glad you weren't just shitting on these recipes just because of them being diet, because that's what a lot of people would do, because a lot of "diet" recipes are good and sometimes I even like them better. Like that eggwhite wrap omelette thing is amazing, with just ham, cheese, salt and pepper, love those! Handy for meal prep too. It's all subjective (for example i don't like rice cakes, pb or shirataki noodles haha)
Hungry Girl! Wow! That’s a trip down eating disorder memory lane.
I totally remember Hungry Girl. Her "mug cakes" in the microwave. Ugh. A crappy snack
Girl don't feel bad. I'm 21 so that makes me a part of Gen Z and I do not have Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok lmao
Thanks!
You with the egg white wrap 😂😂😂😭😭😭 that part was so funny
I am so done with rice cakes! They just remind me of my past eating disorder
Agreed!
I can't stand like diet rice cakes but I will die for those ones from the Asian grocery store especially the ones with a little glaze
True!
I was looking at the label on my sparkling water which said 0 calories per serving and then 10 calories for the entire bottle. I appreciate this explanation so much.
I always like how smiley she is at the beginning.
Aw thanks!
something about not being in the studio and watching you cook was very comforting. good vibes!
So glad!
Yum!
I'm glad you enjoy them! Cool whip is imitation whipped cream
@@AbbeysKitchen Ahh okay that makes sense!
@@Rose-jz6sx the texture of rice cakes is so satisfying. I can’t explain why🤣
@@TheYNirvana yeah it's how you imagine styrofoam would be? But in a good way
So I understand the point of this video was to test out "diet snacks". But watching Abbey nonchalantly, and realistically eat the foods she used to eat when deep in her ED was quite helpful. Thanks Abbey. The way you so naturally aproached these (triggering?) foods displayed how our relationship with certain foods can evolve for the better.
I'm glad it was helpful!
10:50, I just couldn't!! It was sooo hilarious!
Asmr Abbey hahahaha
😂😂
I need to remember the phrase "not supportive to your/my journey" it's a really good way to express that concept
"just slap it on" in British accent 💀
😂
THIS VIDEO KILLED ME I COULDNT STOP LAUGHING AT THE EGG WHITE WRAP THINGY PART😂😂😂😭😭😭😭💀💀💀
😂😂
Thank you for making this video Abbey, I can’t even imagine the memories it brought up. You are so funny, amazing, and sassy 😂❤️
😂thank you!
I'm so early there's no tea in the comments yet
I feel u
😂
I love that this video has emotionally complicated background music. Really supports the vibe
😂
Yesss food . I need new recipes my diet is so repetitive 😭💕👍🏼
I hope this was helpful!
FYI - the miracle noodles are from an asian ingredient, and I find are a great substitute for Asian noodle dishes, especially if you struggle with gluten - particularly Asian soups. The whole "miracle" noodle marketing is really the whitewashing of an ingredient in order to sell more of it...
Thank you for letting me know
Real syrup please! Zero calories works for my water and my black coffee only!! 😉
Agreed!
Interesting, thank you for sharing!
@@AbbeysKitchen Anytime😊
Hey Abbey. I think you should consider changing the video title. I don't think traumatized is a word that should be thrown around lightly. It's a legitimate mental health situation.. kind of like how we shouldn't say I'm so OCD or I'm so bipolar when you actually aren't. Thanks.
Trauma is very serious and I think we dilute language when we throw the word around in a joking manner.
@@hanah32465 Abbey has always been pretty vocal about suffering & recovering from a eating disorder & she was pretty clear that the foods reminded her of her of those times. I think it's harmful to assume that eating disorders don't involve trauma (which according to my physchiatrist they definitely do 😅)
@@ohhstarrynite yeah I know from personal experience. With what you're saying, I think saying "I'm triggered" would better fit the context. I don't think she's actually being traumatized from trying tik tok foods or else the tone of the video would be a whole lot different.
I like miracle noodles in more japanese style cooking. Dry roasting them before adding them to a soup makes them more palatable.
Gosh this is like everything my doctor and nutritionist told me to eat after I got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Yick.
Type 1 gang 🥳
Oh no!
Pudding: I would have stopped at the strawberries and yogurt - low fat or full fat, never 0 fat. I am fully lost with the rest of that. I cannot stand the aftertaste of artificial sugars, any of them.
Your always traumatized thooooo
IDK why, but I love seeing her videos. It makes me feel much more hopeful of my weight loss journey. Love from Honduras🇭🇳♥️♥️♥️♥️
