  • Brief video of Infinity rs-iiib speakers I purchased before I start re-foam and refurbish. I wanted to communicate some of the things a buyer should look for before buying vintage speakers, especially when they are advertised to have previously been “professionally” repaired.

    Loved these back in the 80's. I had them with a Sansui G-9000 and graphic equalizer.

    I bought a pair of second hand Infinity SS 2003 monitors to refoam. Unfortunately, the seller neglected to inform me there was one blown woofer! Haven't found a replacement yet. 😖 Refoaming is a messy act. I had glue on my hands for a week!

    Cool man good stuff my RS 4 were fortunately never worked on before I got them. I would hate to have to try and pull off freshly glued surrounds. Cleaning old glue is hard enough
    I find polypropylene cones are a lot easier to work with then paper and metal. Did you find a place to source voice coils and spiders for em?

      Definitely prefer changing out original surrounds rather than ones that somebody tried and failed on… glue everywhere. I haven’t really found a good source for voice coils, but was able to find a good replacement spider at Simply Speakers. I use them for all the foams. I did see something on their website awhile back that they were going to start sourcing voice coils, but haven’t checked recently. I had to dig through eBay to find a replacement that was close enough for the rs-4bs. I just checked and the ones I ordered in China are no longer available. It was 1” ID, 1” long, 4 ohm, 2F VC for a JBL speaker. The ones I pulled out were 4f, but didn’t seem to affect performance. I think they are probably a little more efficient now.

    Hello sir, great job with these luxury infinity, I bought a pair of the rs iiib model and they need love and with your tips I have made several improvements.
    I have a problem with the crossover, it does not have the original connections, I know that one line is for the tweeter, one more for the middle, but for the woofers I only have a negative and a positive, do you know if these woofers are connected in parallel? I hope you can help me, thank you very much for your attention, kind regards

      Hello George, glad to hear the info helped. The woofers are wired in series. You should have a common wire between the negative post on one woofer to the positive post on the other woofer (my wire was purple). Don’t think the order matters, but my top woofer had the red wire with black strip on the left woofer post (as you’re looking at the back with terminals down) and purple common wire on right post (there’s a red mark on my terminal block, which I assume is positive). For the bottom woofer, the purple, common wire is connected to the left, unmarked post and there is a solid red wire attached to the right, positive post with a red line. You can find the wiring schematic for this speaker online. Hope this helps. Woofer wiring photos:

    Hi. Thanks for the videos. Someone is selling a set of these locally that they refoamed for $550. It's hard to find comparisons. IS that a good price?

      @infinitycrescendoandbeyond3056  2 года назад +2

      Hello. That sounds like a good price, if they were refoamed properly, all drivers are good, and no major cabinet damage. Mine sound amazing with the Yamaha RX-V1 (110 Watt RMS @ 8 ohms, but also rated for 4 ohms) receiver I use to drive them. The rs-iiibs are rated 4-8 ohms, which likely is related to the adjustable pots. I did need to dial in the tweeter and midrange with the pots on the back, which seemed to help them draw more power and really tighten up the bass also. With the dials in the middle, they did sound a little flat and boomy when I first played them, but once I adjusted them in… WOW!!! They are now my favorite speakers for music listening.
      Since the seller is local, hopefully you can inspect before purchasing. If there are any issues with any of the drivers, you should be able to find replacements on eBay (and maybe talk the seller down a little). Buying used is always a gamble. Hope it works out well.

    Hello
    Just found Q3 pair and brought home..
    Cabinets VG.
    12" has been replaced by Realistic subwoofer..
    Yes, i know...
    Wondering if i should restore?

      I would definitely try to restore. Especially if they only need the foam surround replaced. I believe the Quantum 3 has the Watkins Duel drive woofers. I think they may sound a little better than the Realistic and I definitely prefer to have everything original. If you are saying they came with the Realistic, they might be a little tricky to find. Good luck.

    Nice video. Have ever repaired a Polyspherite tweeter from a 4001 series ? I've got 2 that need fixing. Or could you suggest a replacement? ✌️

      I looked into it a little bit for Emit-R and decided it was too much trouble. Never seen the polysherite yet. I can usually find a used replacement on eBay for a reasonable price. Here’s the link to schematic for part reference

    Hello there, I am debating whether or not to buy a set of Infinity cs 3007 for $50 (pair). One of the towers is missing the top woofer. Where would you recommend that I get the replacement woofer from? I would really love to breathe some new life into them, but I want to make sure I can find parts for them first.

    • @infinitycrescendoandbeyond3056
      @infinitycrescendoandbeyond3056  Год назад +1

      Not sure how you can go wrong at $50. In the past, I have been able to find the original replacement woofer on eBay. Sometimes sold individually, but it will likely cost you around $50 just for original replacement. The part # is 902-6774, if you are referring to 8” woofer. Each speaker has two identical that are wired in parallel. To check with ohm meter, remove wires and measure across terminals. You should get ~ 6.5 ohms. I wouldn’t recommend a substitute.

      Hello, the seller was zhzy5500. I think this is the one I got. Not an exact replacement, but works well.
