I can't believe how hard it is to find quality guides like this for someone who's just getting into shooting. This has given me so many pointers on the issues that might throw off my shots and how to compensate.
It is harder to monetize good old fashioned knowledge like this without pimping products. You are right though good info. I have been shooting precision rifle since my time as a Marine and once a year I go back to the basics and I spend time practicing the fundamentals and even do the nerd move of sitting in my hard ensuring my positions are sound. IT is a good way to ensure you don't keep enforcing bad habits. I usually when the weather isn't great. Although living in Miami now it is hard to have a bad day here.
I know this an old video. And an excellent one that helped me out immensely. But one more thing to help with adjustment that I found with my scope is to make sure you mount your rings in the correct relation to each other and the scope to give you maximum movement forward and back. I mounted mine too close together and could never get that perfect setup until I changed the mounting points on the rifle. I hope this helps someone as it was very frustrating!! Thank you Ryan, again....for you this great video!!!
Anyone who'd thumbs down this gracious sharing of experience and wisdom is going through life in a clueless manner,... Thanks Ryan and NSSF; great information for anyone smart enough to know it when they see it.
Ryan, your video is worth its weight in gold! I'm in the process of putting together a gun/scope combination that will help me achieve my goal of shooting accurately at 1000 yards plus. Yours is the best video on scope mounting I've ever seen. Thanks to you, I am finally able to take my position behind the scope in complete and consistent comfort. Thus far I've only practiced at home, but I'm really looking forward to getting out to the range and putting a properly set up rifle into practice. Thanks for solving a problem that has nagged me for a long time. I plan to study your additional videos on MOA and ballistics. Keep up the great work!
Ryan, I salute you. This is golden knowledge... life time experience, shared in just a short amount of time. I'm watching all these videos as I wait for my first rifle. Thank you so much for the top notch videos. These will be recommended to all my friends.
Edgar Bennett my hunting rifles are rem model 700 in .308 amd modeln783 in .300win mag. both with vortex scopes and 12x power at the moment..wanna push beyonf 1000yards one day, at the moment good for 500 and take game at 300m.
It's been 6 months with my Savage Stealth in .308. That rilfe is a beast. It's really as accurate as you can possibly be. I don't have the skill to use it to it's full potential...yet.
I’m 36 and have been hunting since I was 12, but I still caught myself going, “Hmm, that’s a really good point.” Excellent explanations and detail on something that most people think there is nothing left to learn about, but I sure learned a lot! I’ve subscribed and spent the last couple hours watching Ryan’s videos on things like cleaning my gun and sighting in, but still learning things I never thought about!!
I must say, I've been shooting and hunting all of my life (I'm 65 now) but this video removes ALL doubt on how to mount and fit a scope to one individual. I'm very pleased and impressed. Thank you for this post.
Very comprehensive presentation of all aspects related to the topic. This gentleman’s experience is obvious as he thoroughly explains “what and why” and not just the “do.”
Thank you, Sir. Excellent information. Concise and efficient delivery of speech, and top-notch education. Every citizen with a rifle ought to watch this video and soak up the knowledge. Can't thank you enough for your work, in the field and back in the world. Cheers, much appreciated.
I appreciate so very much you going through step-by-step the proper procedure of not only mounting a scope properly, but also showing HOW to set up a scoped rifle for maximum utility. I've been shooting all of my life and have mounted scores of scopes on rifles. I have set them up to shoot sub minute of angle groups etc., but not until watching this video of how to properly fit a rifle to the individual and how to understand the process of setting up the reticle, AO adj., etc. did I really
Ryan Cleckner's videos (I've viewed three so far) are ALL excellent and the information imparted is easy to comprehend and assimilate! Great presentation, articulation and delivery. Thanks NSSF!
These are the best videos on the subject of rifle shooting in general. The host has best credentials and knows how to teach. Too bad most “shooters” out there are not interested, since they think they already know how to do it. Thing is they just don’t know that they don’t know.
I see too many people with scopes mounted too high and too far back. This is the right way to mount the scope to the rifle. Great video from someone who knows what he is talking about and someone who is actually qualified (former sniper and sniper instructor). Great job Ryan and thank you for this informational video!!!
Absolutely the best scope setup video I've seen. Thanks, Ryan. I'm going to start all over setting up my scope. I have the "Voodoo Tactical" cheek rest and love it.
He gives the kind of videos that you just need to first hear him out before you stop watching and thinking you already know everything or what he is going to say. I have realized by first watching the whole video, he answers my questions. Also, I enjoy the little gold nuggets of info that I come across that even I think I already know, but he adds something new to it. Great video as usual! 😀👍🏼
3.1 Million Views and only 29k likes, this is kind of depressing. I was not even looking of a mounting video when I ran across this. Glad I did, amazing.
Very professional indeed... You served with the very best and I'm sure you helped the RANGERS to "Take it to the next level". I served with 90 gunners, Weapons Platoon, Co. C 1st Battalion 75th infantry RANGERS at Fort Stewart Ga. 31313 in 1975. Command Sergent Major Caro and Spc. 4 Quick were ahead of me on the C 130 jump in to Fort Stewart that took there lives. To all those that served and gave all. May they rest in peace. "RANGERS LEAD THE WAY" I can say for them, You make us very proud.
Aaaaggghhhh! I spent a couple hours out in the hot Florida sun and a box of ammo setting up my scope and zeroing today. Now I see I'm going to have to start from scratch again tomorrow thanks to your video. Oh well. At least it will be done right.
I really value this man's knowledge and time. The Lord gives gifts to all it's how you use and teach with them that matter. Thank you sir for sharing your hard earned skills and knowledge.
Wow,thank you for this education! I got my first rifle a week ago and i have been using the scope the way it was set at the factory up until now, what a big difference. I'm shooting 2" groups at over 150 yards
Putting my first scope on my son's Savage Rascal. Without this video, I would have done it all wrong. We both learned a lot! Thanks for your service and this great video series. I recently bought a Savage Model 10 I will need to do the same thing to. My son is super pumped, and said you are the "bees knees". LOL
Thanks for this video. For someone who does not have the military/rifle training as you, this video will make target and hunting shooting more fun and enjoyable.
Well done tutorial Ryan. Great idea on the "do it yourself" wooden cheek rest and following through with effective installation guidance. I may just consider the same on mine when time permits.
Probably the best "take to the range" reference I have ever used. So easy to read, and all of it is like the instructor is talking with you, it's almost conversational.
Not everyone had a knowledgeable grandfather or father to teach them about scopes. Most did not, nor do they wish to put in the time to learn the correct ways to do so. This man has taught the class many times. I tried his principals to my scope. And it works like a champ.
New to long range shooting. I've been shooting AR's and handgun primarily up until now. I just picked up a Remington 700 R5, and am mounting a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10x40mm M3 Front Focal. Your videos have been a great help. Thanks!
Probably one of the most informative lessons on scope mounting I have seen to date. Thank-you for sharing your knowledge in a way that was easy to understand and apply.
very good explanations. Clear sound quality, He speaks well and does not stumble through his presentation. Excellent job. Covered everything I wanted to know.
72 years young and still good stuff to learn .. nice one Going to close my eyes and drop my head down .. I just know I will nee to adjust my head height .
First time rifle owner here. I really appreciate your thoroughness here. Feel very confident about getting my scope and rifle set up just right now. I like to understand the mechanics but of things and this was just the explanation I was looking for.
Blue Loctite comes in a RED plastic bottle. So does the red. Read the label. This is a great video. I learned a similar system when I was in the Army but that was like 50 years ago and I have a case of CRS. Thank you NSSF. Glad I am a member.
Clovis Martin depending on brand, it is most likely an adjustment to increase the brightness level of the reticle for use on a dark colored target (like a black bear).
Very good instructor, gives very good detail, military taught, great for us, for those that never mount a scope before can do so at least they have been shown an taught the correct way, of coarse there is always those in every class believe they don't need instruction, I have mounted 100's in my life time and enjoyed watching. One thing I've learned eyes, see differently, I always level as much as possible, then look through right handed and left handed if the cross hair is not level for me anyway it will show up during this test, throw it up fast like taking a fast shot check on being level then change side. thanks I enjoyed
Dang it, now I need to go get a cheek rest for my AR. My scope is mounted high because I have the older AR with a hand rail and iron sights. And I told my wife I wasn't going to spend any money on guns today.....oopsie!!
Ryan/channel goes through everything a shooter would need to know. I learned a lot by this video... and I liked how he used the "Factory mirrors on a car" he puts things in easy terms "Dumbing it down." Another educational video.
Ranger Cleckner, Your actions for a successful scope setup are clear and copyable. Your tone and completeness in this video combined with your other videos and the Long Range Shooting Handbook are a superb start to setting up and mounting my new scope and first rifle. I'll follow your advice fully and involve the expert hands, eyes, and mind of the owner of the tactical optics store. You can be sure I'll forward your video links to him for his future assistance to many. Thank you also for referring us to the WhereToShoot, org site for locations for testing. As I live in the state of California where nearly every facet of life is regulated and watched by an ever-growing bureau, your list makes easy discovery of shooting practice places and like-minded, responsible people. Other videos I have watched regarding rifle optics selection, setup, mounting, and use have flooded us observers with undefined jargon and the acronyms. Rather than your mission being to prove your superiority and savvy with many years of expertise, you coax us through and around the barriers ill-defined jargon. You are the teacher of teachers with rationale ("the WHY?") and core values laid bare for us to adopt what is the way of long range thinking and shooting. Thank you for bringing the effective humility of a leader-teacher into a topic and skill usually dominated by pomposity and veiled humiliation in an effort to appear "greater than" or "more valuable than" us beginners and intermediates. Stephen
I should'nt be surprised at your ability to continue to impress me with your talents and successes, but again you have outdone yourself. I thought I knew how to mount and fit a rifle to my needs but wow, I am now confident that your instructions will benefit many in the shooting world. Good job.
I am fairly new to the shooting world and I appreciate the time you took to make this video .I already knew the basics of mounting a scope, but there were a couple of things that I didn't consider when mounting , like taking out one screw at a time to apply the loctite. Thank You, for helping out some of us who appreciate a little help along the way of being a better shooter !! As always stay safe while shooting guys & gals.
These videos are so helpful! I've been shooting and hunting over 40 years and some of this information was new to me. You are clear, concise and knowledgeable. Thanks!
Possibly the most usable video on the net for clear, concise, practical and helpful tips on mounting a rifle scope. Thank you! PS: I just noticed 41 viewers are from Piers Morgan's audience.
Best explanation of proper scope/eye level/ relaxed head resting to maximize consistency. I have shot very well but notice absolutely incredible results on all shots including running with one gun in particular. Thanks Ryan!
the more you shoot the better you get, the more questions you ask the more you learn. good question. we're always improving when we ask sincere questions from knowledgable sources. to help us get better. then were responsible to pass on that knowledge to others.
I just bought my first rifle yesterday. I took it to the gunsmith to get the scope mounted. Now I have the tools to make sure it's sighted to me. Thank you!
Ryan I just read your book, it was so much different than every other shooting manual that I’ve ever read. I’m very impressed. Thank you so much for writing a handbook that is actually entertaining and useful. In the meantime keep your booger hook off the bang switch!
When you're an -insert here- instructor in the military, you have already usually demonstrated an ability in not only what you do, but mentoring others on that subject as well. You also become very proficient in giving quality presentations on your subject area, else you are instructor no longer. Agreed on the presentation skills; excellent video. One point is you should check your level after tightening the screws too; even doing an X pattern can shift the level on the scope when tightening.
Learned a LOT from this video in particular the flat bar technique for leveling the rifle and then the scope. Reminded me of lessons learned from my Dad a couple of generations ago.....to build stuff square, plumb, and level.....simple and practical methods that work but don't require machine tool precision.
Ryan, as a new shooter I must say that all of your tutorials are invaluable information and I would be lost without them. Thank you for your service in the US army and thank you for your continued service in the civilian sector as a NSSF instructor.
Just want to.thankyou for the greatly needed information in this video...I was at a loss for consistant shot placment until you showed me the importance of a cheek pad for eye alignment for scope view...now that ive made my own cheek pad i am able to put shot through shot :) thankyou very much for the lesson!
I've been shooting with scopes for a long time and use a lot of similar techniques. I found this to be a great video since it's reaching a mass audience and educating them.
Wow, what a simple clear block of instruction on how to set up a rifle scope properly! This could have saved me hours of frustration on the range if I would have come across it sooner! Thank you!
Awesome! Fortunately had to become a little more educated and to realize how do use the right search terms to find this very good video. Thank you very very much!
I can't believe how hard it is to find quality guides like this for someone who's just getting into shooting. This has given me so many pointers on the issues that might throw off my shots and how to compensate.
his book is awesome as well. I have been shooting my whole life but just started to get into long range shooting and it helped me out so much.

Top professional instructors
are always a joy to learn from. Great job.
Is it though? No levels? Mounting it on a table with just a bipod? No bench vise?!
Anyone who'd thumbs down this gracious sharing of experience and wisdom is going through life in a clueless manner,... Thanks Ryan and NSSF; great information for anyone smart enough to know it when they see it.
This fella makes awesome plain and simple to understand videos, good job and thanks for all the useful info !

Outstanding video. Instruction the way it’s supposed to be, just like he was briefing his team. Complete, concise and no BS.
Ryan Cleckner is the Bob Ross of rifles. All of his videos are so informative and helpful.

great video, and Thank you for your service sir.
@ Why don't you take a long vacation to Iraq or better yet Iran, you will love it this time of year.
A lot of great tips that will help me, like leveling with the flat tool and how to torque the rings down without a torque wrench
Absolutely the best scope setup video I've seen. Thanks, Ryan. I'm going to start all over setting up my scope. I have the "Voodoo Tactical" cheek rest and love it.

Great video. Thank you. I have a short barreled 308 Remington 700 as well. What loads does your short barreled 308 like?

Great Vid. Really helpful,I like the idea of using flat metal piece between scope and mount to level. Thanks
perfect video, was fucking around with levels, torches, lasers when all i needed was a piece of metal. Superb as always
Excellent job! I just learned a lot. Thanks for putting this up.
I wish I could upvote this thing twice, only for the fact that this Soldier wore the scroll of the 1st.

This is the best scope mounting video I've seen. The most information in the fewest words. Thank you.
thank you for all that useful information broken down into simple steps
Best video i've seen for mounting a rifle. Too many cash grabs trying to make me buy $100 tool to mount my scope.
Thank you for the videos! Also, really enjoying your book - LONG RANGE SHOOTING HANDBOOK.
Thanks for the plug. :)
I am ordering the book now. Thanks for the information.
Probably the best "take to the range" reference I have ever used. So easy to read, and all of it is like the instructor is talking with you, it's almost conversational.
This is by far the best scope mounting video that I have seen - and I've seen quite a few!
Absolutely fantastic video

Thanks im jyst getting into shooting and I found this very helpful
This is great. I served in the Corps and it was a great refresher after 25 yrs. Thanks
Does anyone here know what attachment is fixed to the leading end of the scope tube right before the objective bell?
Clovis Martin depending on brand, it is most likely an adjustment to increase the brightness level of the reticle for use on a dark colored target (like a black bear).
Watch his video on DOPE. It is a pull out piece of thin paper. you can write your DOPE for different yardages on it.

Ryan your advice is profoundly grateful
Only one problem after watching this... now I need to re-install all of my scopes! EXCELLENT PRESENTATION!
This video is old but knowledge is timeless. As I prepare my first precision rifle you have been a treasure of knowledge. Thank you good sir
