Just in case you didn't know, people still come to Ryan Cleckner's tutorials, even those of us who have bought his book, Long Range Shooting, and put it into practice sometime ago. Refresher views for the once in a while long range shooter are great! Thank you for your service!
I review all of his videos from time to time, great instructor and easy to understand. I also have his book, a good read.
This guy is super informative! I hope you will allow him to make even more videos in the future! Keep up the good work!!!
Great presenting style, too. He puts out a lot of information and it's easy to absorb and understand.
He's got a book out ...
I like this guy! Talks fast and knows his shit, simple and to the point. Too many people like to hear themselves talk taking 20 min to say 5 min worth of info. Not this guy, thanks for that!
Ryan's book is "Long Range Shooting Handbook". It is excellent and easy to read.
I know this comment is 5 years old but I figured I would buy Ryan's book to help support him just because of all the knowledge I was getting from him through his videos. After reading through the book I realized there is alot that he doesn't touch on in videos and for under 20 bucks it was well worth the money.
@@disillusioned070 Wow, yes, I forgot about Ryan's book. I have it here somewhere and will have to dig it out again. Need to sight in my 270 and go sheep hunting up here on Maunakea. I know Ryan has some other informative and easy to understand videos here - need to look up the one where he talks about the three point sling and how it is useful to use for stabilizing for long shots. Great videos, great book
I'm anxious for his book on advanced long range shooting.
My Lord something as simple as adding yard marks to the elevation knob would have never crossed my mind. You would have seen me, all tactical like, out there counting clicks... feel somewhat like a fool when I see how easy he makes it look.
(Meth head) I wanna shoot long range.( Instructor) well first we need to gather d.o.p.e (meth head) oh I done that before I came to the range.
Who's here because of Warrior Poet Society?
Been here more than once WELLLLL before WPS channel,,, Still listen and refresh and learn something new every time. :)
Who cares. Informative either way.
yes, and this guy is AWESOME!!!
I actually discovered WP after watching Ryan's videos
There are great shooters, and there are great instructors. He's both
I love the idea of taping the ranges right on your elevation turret!! Where can you get tape that will stick but not make a complete mess of the turret and stay on through rain, dirt, wind etc?
Powerful ballistics calculators in mobile devices have sure taken the guesswork out of predicting a fire solution. My first time ever shooting long range came after spending months reading and studying to understand the variables involved in ballistics which I then applied by developing a load that produced a very close calculated match to a ballistic reticle in my scope with holds from 300yd to 1000yds. I used excel to produce a correction chart with turret adjustments to account for variance between the fixed reticle solution and predicted drops in varying temperatures and density altitudes. Did a tall target test to obtain turret correction factors. Sighted in then I took the rifle to a long range for the first time ever… I had no idea if any of this would actually work… I read environmentals from a kestrel drop D3 applied the correction from my chart then shot steel targets from 200m to 700m using the reticle for holds… And to my utter shock and surprise I got first round hits with very few misses. Repeated it by dialling the turret instead of reticle with the same success. Was lucky that it just happened to be zero wind conditions. This experience blew my mind and gave me confidence in the science of ballistics and a deep appreciation for the excellent tools and information available to us today. If you put in the homework, do the math and set up a decent rifle correctly even a complete novice can achieve first round hit fire solutions right out of the gate. What a fun hobby and sport!!!
Very informative, obviously a practised instructor.
allan dobbs, he graduated several military sniper schools
There is a difference between being a good practitioner and being a good instructor of that practice.
When he squeeze the trigger do you see any camera equipment attached to his scope? No....His shot was recorded thru the different scope. Ryan adjusted his reticle to the 660 yards so no hold over needed. You are putting crosshair on the center of the target. Mirage at 6:10 is showing 3mph half value wind so on this size of target (looks to me like 3/8" AR500 Steel IDPA A-Zone reactive target 18"x30") and at this distance no adjustment is needed you will hit this target if you will do everything on your part (fundamentals).
Not to mention the rounds can be seen coming from the right of the camera " scope "
Who gives a shit? Surely you’re not mad about this.
Pretty sure they are aware of that and aren’t trying to fool anyone. Ever think maybe they removed the reticle off the target so you can see the impact? I do this all the time recording others shots without a spotting scope.
thanks, i was wondering about it. This makes sense
I love Ryan Cleckner's videos. Everything you need to know and he explains it in an easy to learn manner.
Gather and use dope!! LOL great video Ryan!
The NSSF series with Ryan are by far the best tutorials I have seen on the net or in person. It has all the info needed, key details, and the presentation is as professional as it gets. I also like that that anybody from a novice to intermediate shooter can pick up quite a few things.
I like this guy. No bullshit. Just pragmatic, field rugged, common sense.
On your 660 Yard shot why are you holding high and right if you adjusted your scope for distance in mils? I understand possibly holding right for windage however if you factored your scope adjustment why hold high? I am confused???
he probably adjusted to 700, when he gives another extra minute for the 650 yards
DeadWayfes If hes shooting 660 and set for 700 he wouldn't aim high, he would have to aim low cause the bullet would hit high. He probably set it for 600 and aimed high for the extra 60yds.
Danny Kelly He doesn't have a camera on his scope when he shoots. My guess is the video was being recorded through another scope for illustration/action purposes. And that scope wasn't perfectly set on target when the shot was taken.
Carl H Yeah I posted that comment prior to watching the video lol Then i watched it and realized that that wasn't his actual scope it was showing lol
i agree with MrVideohunter2011 it can be really confusing for people looking to fully understand this stuff. they shouldnt have done that
DOPE never meant "Data On Previous Engagement" until some verbage meister made it up. "Dope" has ALWAYS, since maybe the WWII era meant "the straight scoop" and in marksmanship it has always referred to sight settings. As far as data books being confusing apparently the Army never taught you the proper use of one. There's two kinds of data books. One is for training and data development and the other would be your field data. If you would've looked into that TRGT data book you would have found a "zero summary chart" which is where you summarize your elevation settings for various temperature ranges. There's no flipping through your data book as you demonstrated. When you are preparing for a mission/hunting trip you simply make up a card covering the expected temperature range. I realize maybe the Army didn't teach you proper data book management but in the Corps we taught every rifleman how to use one to increase their battlefield efficiency. Very disappointed that you made this video. A lot of old school SOTIC instructors are turning over in their graves...
He was a sniper team leader in 2nd Ranger Bn. He knows his stuff. I learned to shoot in the USMC and I can tell this man knows his stuff.
J Ward 1st Ranger.
Yellow Mustard.Cholula ( Hot Sauce) Original. MIX . STIR . Make Mustard again..
I dont get why if he dialed the elevation in why he still held over for the first shot? I get the windage portion but why did he hold high if he just corrected the elevation?
Ryan, this is probably a naive question but at the end of the video you mentioned that you have a target at 660 yards and you adjusted for it and yet when you show the sight through the scope your reticle is aiming high and to the right. Should it not show dead center on the target? or am I missing something?
Never mind I see that MrVideohunter2011 had the same question and someone has responded to it already.
Thank you for the tips!
This video is dope.
guns and dope good combo....hey Henry we need a good acronym for legacy data that will be catchy to mix with firearms....3 days later
good man every time i look at one off your videos i learn some thing i did not know
Thanks again Ryan. A tip I came up with is to write needed calculations on the Leupold retracting data tape so I can cross reference with the range finder and weather station I carry and have my different data cards available for reference. As you say, all of my data is based on actual shooting. I try to research where I'm going so I can be ready for things like elevation.
DOPE doesn't stand for data on previous encounters. Somebody with no knowledge of the history of the term invented that. Like the snipers that think KIM'S games stands for 'keep in memory' because they never read Rudyard Kipling's book "Kim" which is where the memory game comes from....
Dope is just an old time term for information, data. kinda like 'skinny'. ("Hey, I heard there was a problem at the office. What's the skinny?")
Again, 'Dope' is just an word that old timers used to mean information.
Another great and simply stated video. I've been shooting for over 30 years but never did anything more than 300 meters, mostly because I didn't have access to an area that goes out to 500 or more meters. I'm still interested in learning what I can though, I really enjoy it. Thanks for the tips. Great job.
your video's are awesome, im just getting into long range shooting and you always give great advice. now i just need to put what you say into practice!
Thank you: NSSF I've been out of the sport for about 15 years, there are a lot of shows about shooting a rifle today. I recently discovered Ryan on you tube, I am grateful for the quality & to the point these videos bring to the people.
I've played a computer game called Police Quest: S.W.A.T. from 1995 that mentions the D.O.P.E. book, but never knew what it was until now, thanks NSSF.
Thanks to Ryan and the team working with him for such super useful information and real life experiences.
Because the target was further than the 650 yard dope mark I had on the scope.
hey Ryan these videos are great I learned so much the way you break down tips for long range shooting I understand it so quickly it's like it's not that hard good job man keep it up...
These are great videos very well done, thank you.
next ryan will show us how to use METH , minute, earth, teddy, huger
Can you do a video explaining using a mil dot scope... With a moa adjustments
At 5:45, I don't think he meant to say "extra one minute" like he said. For how much he turned the knob, I think he meant to say "extra one click" as in either 1/8 or 1/4 minute.
I thought I heard that
+Carl H Just happened to see this and although been a while since you commented be advised he meant what he said and said what he meant .....Leupold Mark 4 m3 turrets (amongst others) have 1minute elevation and 1/2 min windage per click .They are designed for those who actually operate and put rounds on center mass targets(i.e. the fleshy kind) quickly vs. attempt perfect bulls on paper or steel by overspinning wheels and knobs as smaller corrections are done using the mildot reticle to include holdovers and or windage corrections vs. putting it in the turrets as conditions change quitckly etc. Being on the other side of the house the suck chooses to use the typical 1/4 moa albiet with 30moa per revolution turret as a solution to quick dope adjustments.
TheRatmn969 - When Ryan dials in his elevation for target not accounting for wind in the video, why is his scope pointed "high" ? Hope that's not a stupid question 8-)
I need the answer to this too! if he dialed his scope how come the reticle is aiming high (i get that's its aiming right for windage, but shouldn't the horizontal line be at the elevation of the target??
The shot he took was being watched through a different scope equipped with camera equipment. The scope he was looking through would have looked centered on
target, as it was dialed correctly for elevation, and wind wasn't a big enough factor at that particular location and time.
Ryan, Where did you get the program that you can print to install data on your elevation turret ? Best idea ever and the Leupold pull out DOPE tape. One quick Q, If your zero is at 100 yds., and your using mils, your angel is Constance, so one mil at 100 yds. is 3.60" then at 500 yds., it would 5 X 3.6= 18 mils, your angel is still increasing outward, your round drops 43" at 500yds, so the correct mils are 12 mils correct ? This is another great video, I'll go back and maybe watch your other video on understanding mils. Thanks at always
I'm actually coming back to this video after I've been shooting more... Here is what is going on with the shot at 6:07: It is filmed from a second scope - someone who is to the left of Ryan, when he shoots - by the way, this isn't mentioned in the video but you can see the trace of the bullet shimmering through the air: to achieve that, you need to be on scope (spotting scope or rifle scope works) - as directly behind the shooter as possible - kind of right behind them, in line with their shot. If they are just barely to your right, you will see that in the shimmer - and that is exactly what you see in the video they show at 6:07: you can see the bullet trace go from the right hand side of the scope, and it flies (obviously....) to the steel target. This technique can be extremely useful , if someone is missing the target: you can literally watch the bullet trace/shimmer, and tell if they are left, or right, or high, or whatever. It takes some skill, but it is very helpful.
In terms of why there was a holdover : that is because the video is being taken from a separate scope.. which is obvious, because otherwise, you would see a lot of recoil.
Also: Finally, for the dialing of the MOA: he is just dialing his dope, plus a little extra. the target is at 660y, and his dope is for 650y. And, if you collect dope every 50 yards or 100 yards, you will know how much difference there is in your dope at each distance... For me, at. 600y, the delta is probably something like 7 or 8 MOA per hundred yards... so from 650 to 660 yards, that is about 0.7 or 0.8 MOA roughly: so he dials + 1 MOA beyond his dope. And maybe it's 10 MOA per hundred yards, which would be exactly 1.0 MOA adjust from 650 to 660. In any case - if it's 0.8 or 1.0 - that is a difference of 0.2 MOA, which is only 1.3" difference at 660y.
Looks as though, according to the info shown on this box of ammo, said rifle should be zeroed at 200 yds, correct??? So is it a "magnum" cartridge or "standard" cartridge? 300 win mag Vs 308??? So does that particular scope zero at 100yds or 200 + yds as my Nikon PS5 BDC states ???
Sleazy guy walks up to a shooter at the the range and says in his best Cheech & Chong voice, "Hey man. Got any dope?"
Shooter hands him an index card.
Guy responds with,
" Cool man. But how am I supposed to smoke this?"
Shooter hands him a Bic lighter.
Let's say you zeroed you rifle at 100 yards and your next target is at 450 yards.
Does your next 1" moa starts at 200? next 2" moa is at 300? and your next 3" moa is at 400 yards and every 1/4" click is 25, 50, and there you have it 450 yards. Is that correct or incorrect??
I don’t understand why he’s holding over on his shot at 6:10 . Are we actually looking through the spotters scope? Oh, wait. We must be, because our view doesn’t shake when the shot is fired. If anyone knows what’s actually happening at the end, could they comment for me, please?
Im wondering about your turrets..ok 1 for 100 etc. looks great..but what do you do when you get another serie or type of ammo? Or if you are using the same rifle for sport and hunting (different type and weight of bullets, different loads etc)..then your turret marks will be wrong...it is only for just one specific round...i gues there is the reason for using moa or mrad ;)
I'm one of thoses newbie shooters that bought a DOPE book. Now I call it my practice book for calling shots and practice.
Moa is a lot to take In if I have a 100 yd zero and I zero out my turrets is it as simple as raising it one moa at 100 yds I need school for this kind stuff. I have a 100yd zero I'm just going to figure out how many moa I need to raise say out to 500also why were you holding high right ... on your hit I understand the right hold for windage maybe ... I cant read mirage so i couldnt tell. But I thought you had her zeroed at said distance maybe the distance zeroed and the target distance were different ... also why raise an moa too
Im not gonna lie. If i was just starting out long range shooting and didnt have any d.o.p.e i would honestly just start shooting and going from there making adjustments. Now i havent watched the full video yet so i wanted to post my comment about my thought process before seeing what the video said.
Nice job, Ryan!
I assumed with all that adjustment that the crosshairs would still be on the target... Looked to me like even with all that adjustment he was sitting high and right... So after you do with all of that adjusting you still need to do extra compensation?
Always enjoy your to the point videos that give excellent data and dont waste a persons time. Thank you and I look forward to more of the same informative videos in the future.
not every time you encounter an animal just standing there either making it an easy shot most times when bush hunting they are on the run
Great video. I’m just about done reading your beginner’s guide to long range shooting book (awesome by the way!) and it’s nice to actually hear you speak for the first time on this video.
just a suggestion on another way to figure it out find out what the true minute of angle is for each 100 yards. then get your manufacturer's drop data for the bullet that you're shooting. divide the drop by MOA and that will give you the true bullet drop MOA then multiply that value by 4 for a 1/4=1" scope and that will tell you how many clicks you have to make to achieve On Target for every hundred yards. I hope that helps some people have fun shooting.
P.S. if yours is a 1/8=1" just multiply by 8 rather than 4. if yours is metric just convert and do the same process.
Great videos man. Just one question, you never mention coriolis do you ever take it into account?
I have a doubt here:if you dialed the distance in your scope, why does it appear in the scope shot that you are compensating?
Discovered Ryan in the Warrior Poet app. Had no clue he’s been the man for this long! Lol
Not the best word the FBI/DEA might no like me telling my buddies let's go get our dope 😂😂😂
Does this guy have his own channel?
If not, he should.
If so, can someone direct me to it, please?
Ryan if you adjusted your scope for the distance why was there a large hold over? if you adjust the scope shouldn't you put the "X" on the target?
Ndbbm 40 that video was taken through a different sight.
also, you'd have to account for wind, incline, temperatures
Keep your fingers OFF THE TURRENTS of cheaper scopes.....shoot using trajectory data and prior experience
Hmmm... a gun video recommending I try D.O.P.E.? Unexpected!
I prefer to mark my dope for learning purposes.
Like, did you feel the wind at 3mph but the hits showed 5mph. After the shooting session you can go over the markings and check what went and how and see how eg. temp affected the flight. If you drive all the way to shoot couple rounds with a nice weapon system, I atleast try to get the most out of it.
My scope is set up for mils both in the reticle and turns, I normally just hold that many in the scope instead of turning the dial for anything 500 yards or less. Anything further I always adjust the dial to meet up to the crosshairs.
Damn Ryan you just motivate the hell out of me Brother every time I watch your clips.
I like keeping it Old School 🏫
Semper Fi
Question: If he already made the adjustment on the scope (clicks), then why did he aim high (scope view of target)?
WOOOOAH NO BEARD CLECKNER... NO BUENO
Thank you Ryan. You’ve introduced me to dope and now I can’t stop using it.
Just found this channel. Think it’s great. Lots of helpful information, hope more vids keep coming.
why Ryan aimed higher and to the left? he dialed the right moa for 660yrd, isn't he?
Ryan: Should I do a 100 METER zero if I use a MIL scope?
Is it even practical to do this for "medium" range (300 to 600 yards)? Or even shorter ranges?
I like that he cuts through the b.s. You don't need to spend a fortune on fancy stuff. Save that money on what fits your particular needs.
this is the best thing I've found on shooting in the entire RUclips log... thank you for speaking clear and to the point.
Eric Scheidt definitely . It's a bit of a morass out there.
I wish the camera operator would have focused on Ryan instead of the background. He does this in a few other videos.
I'm just getting into long range so thankyou that was extremely helpful, phil from new zealand
I really wanna go hunting never went but hopefully I'll be able to afford a rifle before they get taken from us so that I can catch my own meal
660 yards .. pfff EASY! Everybody can do it.😂
I went online trying to find that scope ring mount can you give more detail do it?
My brother loves dope.
But as a felon he cant own a firearm.
Very impressive.
Slow the playback to .25 and watch that shot. You can see the shockwave path and the hit. Pretty cool.
focusfirelensllc.com Find out why many seasoned shooters are using this lens.
What you are saying in the beginning of the video is also true for a long lasting relationship between a man and a woman.
Hey Ryan, can you tell me what bag you're using? It looks like a good height. Also, was looking at 700P's why did you cut yours down - and would you recommend a LTR over the 26"
What are your thoughts on using a .22 trainer prs rifle as a cheaper training replacement for centerfire?
believe or not look like am going to be along range shooter because of your video ryan thanks for all the tips
Thanks Ryan!
Last question - what do you use for a cheek strap and what's the thing you clip on underneath it for elevation? I find the HS comb too low for my small head but would be great to make something work instead of getting a whole new stock. Got a 5R 20" barrel coming next week!
My go to guy for information, education and understanding! Keep up the great work!
Is this true? I do a lot of hunting on various terrain and an adjustable leg height found on a Harris Bi pod for example allows me to get in postion and get target acqusition fast and easy regardless of the incline or low or high vegetation I need to shoot over.
Hell yea! ggreat video!! and in Arizona to boot.. live here and love shooting in this great state
Are sticks better than a pod if I can shoot in a prone position? They make some such as Snipe Pod that clip on and off easy and would allow the gun to move on recoil. They are good, but not as steady as an attached Harris Bipod.
You are a great teacher!
Ryan:
Do you find any issues with accuracy when using a bi-pod versus a pad? I have heard that the point of impact can change due to the gun not being able to slide on recoil when using a an attached bi pod. I was told that the bi-pod has a tendancy to make the impact lower?
i got to be honest, when i searched "dope" this is NOT what I had in mind....
Ryan I been liking your videos... LOL I don't think my 243 micro hunter is up to the task of long range.
So when do I win a real long range gun. I will not sacrifice my 7MM WEA. to play long range.
Awesome vid brotha. You said the target was at 660yds and you dialed in an extra minute past your 650yd dope, meaning that round is dropping almost 6.88" in 10 yds. That's a pretty dramatic drop for a .308. What Hornady round were you shooting?
4:50 is the common answer. Tape and index card / paper.
Really appreciate you sharing your experience. Question tho: I'm just getting into the sport so bare with me - if you adjusted the elevation for the drop @ 660yds, why didn't you align on the horizontal reticle?
That was filmed through a different scope, not through the scope that was on his rifle.
dope was the best acronym they could come up with?
Great stuff. It's funny, this is the 3rd recent video that kind of read my thoughts. I've become really interested in multi-gun and thinking about what shotgun I would want to use & then a shotgun stage planning/loading video pops up. I'm thinking about my Cimmaron revolver & a great cowboy action comes out & as of 3 days ago, I really wanted to go learn how to shoot long distance targets :)
Weren't you somewhere in C 2/75 at one point? Great videos.
