"Yes of coarse"... Or yes, of COURSE*?
That intro is like James Bond meets Cowboy Bebop. Amazing.
it looks cool right? like this would be a cool game if they took another shot at it.
Actor and double blueberry (rasberry in the MK-verse) "winner", Johnny Cage must've produced this.
Everybody online? Ok Three, Two, One. Let's Jam! Bbbbrap ba baaa ba deda baaaaaahhh....
yeaahhh even the beat sounds kind of like cowboy bebop XD you could easily say it was Jet Black instead of Jax hahahahaha
@Metroidzard
Thank you, I am happy you enjoyed it! It actually was inspired by the Good Vs Evil syfy tv series (link above) i based it on when i created that game intro.
It's interesting to go back and watch these early eps after getting into Wha Happun? during 2021 - Matt's much quieter, there's no direct quotes from devs/PR people, there's hardly any music playing during script portions, no furs- I mean funny Matt avatar moving around the screen and gesticulating...the series has definitely come a long way in the 3 years both in terms of quality (not that this wasn't entertaining, mind you) and in building its own identity and personality. Props for that, Mr. Muscles.
I like that he actually says "What Happened?" now instead of "Wha Happun?"
It's a LOT less cringy imo, and I no longer get second hand embarrassment when he says it.
I actually liked how funny it sounded, but I can see how that could get annoying
@@OwNAvenged I miss the "Wha Happun" personally, "What Happened" sounds a lot more boring to me
@@leeartlee915 it’s perfectly fine lmao you know people been calling things cringey a long time
@@OwNAvenged Agreed. Coming back to these old episodes after watching a handful of the later ones has me cringing hard.
The scene of Subzero walking down the stairs with his head down singing some Type O Negative always makes me laugh. 🤣
My dude, that was pitched down Adele.
😂 😂
@@Shinbu1128 same thing
That intro had NO BUSINESS being that good, my god.
Can we take a minute to acknowledge how cheesy awesome the MK4 Commercial was? Good times.
Special Forces was definitely crap. I'm glad they did try again in the action adventure genre (or beat'em up genre) with Shaolin Monks.
I dont think mk special forces is THAT bad. Its bad. I guess they tried to bite more they could chew
*Shaloan
WatrDragn what...?
Shaolin Monks was way better!
"And that's Wha Happun" but man, I am sitting here I watched the video twice and I still think you are bamboozling me with that funky Black Dynamite intro this game had.
Matt
I really want to thank you for saying the MK:SF intro was good! I made that in 3 weeks (with all the other cinematics for the game i worked on), and it was inspired from a scifi (syfy) channel show we liked called Good vs. Evil. ruclips.net/video/YuN8LybimbQ/видео.html which was inspired by Charlies angles.
So i worked at Midway full time from 97-2000 doing cinematics for game and marketing/advertising, then did some freelance work after that (including the MK:SF game intro and cinematic).
A year before that game was released, it was a very different and way, way better game. Like i game i was impressed with when i would play test it. What destroyed that game, was they had a great programmer who was doing some amazing stuff in the game (it had real time water refraction in '98, which did not exist in any other game at the time, or anything for several years later), and he left with the other MK guys to start the other studio and was replaced by a programmer who was way in over his head. And all the cool stuff in the game went away and ended up the way it was released. So what killed that game was not some of the artist leaving, it was the really good programmer was gone, and they had no support after that. The guys who were left tried their best, but with no only 1 sub-par programmer, it was the death of that production. it was really sad to see that happen.
Do you still happen to have any of the old cutscenes or footage of the old maps anywhere? I played through the prototype that's around but that's just the first level. I'd be really interested in seeing whatever was cut out of the game, would especially love to see that refractive water. I guess the sub-par programmer is the reason the camera was changed to the terrible one chosen for release where you couldn't see anything in front of you? It was definitely an interesting choice, that's for sure.

Just a heads up, the guy you have pictured as *Dave Michicich* is actually *Tommy Tallarico* , video-game composer and former host on Electric Playground. The picture is from the thumbnail of the video where Tommy interviews Dave.
The more you know lol
"So what kinda effect do you want for your opening to the game?"
"Yes"
At least Shaolin Monks was good. That was an important piece of entertainment in my formative years. That said, I hadn't played Devil May Cry or God of War yet, so it was all new and exciting to me.
KrossoverGod unlockable scorpion and subzero playthrough was also dooooope
@@KombatGod also did you know you can actually make some good combos i used to mash fast attack as a kid i played it just recently as an adult and you can pretty much get all your special moves and fighting styles strung together in one combo its gets pretty dmc like when you go ham on those combos
It's sad how after they FINALLY NAILED IT with Shaolin Monks they never made another MK adventure game
Devil May Cry is a great game.
Kendon L. Taylor what was the reveal?
Rewatched this episode because of the Mythologies Sub Zero video, it's so cool to see how much your writing and editing has improved over the years. The jump in quality between this and one the more recent What Happend episodes is gigantic, keep up the great work Matt!
I don't believe a game intro so amazing could be attached to a game so bad.
Still waiting on that Drake of the 99 Dragons LP, Matt!
Joseph Lien
He should also do Advent Rising and it's canceled million dollar "Race to Save Humanity" contest
Laughing Octopus Don’t remind me 😡
He already did an episode of "Wha Happun?" Just recently...
I wonder how butt hurt john tobias is now because MK franchise is super huge and ed boon racking in millions of dollars
@@1Hol1Tiger if you want to add to your list: tearring saga by the guy who made the first fire emblems
Ed boon And John Tobias are still friends.
Tobias made the mk vs DC universe comic book... Helped in some conecepts in Injustice games.
He knows he made the wrong decisions back then. He already talked about It in many interviews that you can find easyly on internet.
It's sad that "Fans" would rather have a knockoff wearing their favorite IP's skin than an actual spiritual successor. Not much more can be said
@@1Hol1Tiger Hideki Kamiya made Bayonetta because he couldn't make a DMC sequel. Bayo was a hit and the only games considered on the same level as DMC in that niche.
Koji Igarashi made Bloodstained because he couldn't make Castlevania anymore. Bloodstained is as good as any proper Igavania title, arguably better since it combines elements from all the successors with SOTN 2.0, making the culmination of his time with the genre.
Sometimes a person absolutely can recapture the glory of their old successes when legally denied the opportunity to continue their original work. Not often but it does happen.
@@1Hol1Tiger Warcraft and Starcraft is a knock-off of Warhammer?
At least we got Tremor in MK X
That Wrestlemania 21 footage looks familiar...It's kinda making me a bit rustled!
Oh yeah, The Tobias leaving and new game studio failure part.
Matt, you're a luminary and a saint. I can't tell you how much I love you for doing this.
Man that moment in Wrestlemania 21 on the ladder is literally one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. It was perfect.
1:09 I guess that MK Mythologies Sub Zero isn't as good, then.
Aw memories at that Kurt Angle , Rey Mysterio glitch
11:35 Stranglehold being a commercial failure really upset me. The game was super fun, and had Chow Yun Fat.
While everyone else was busy developing for the upcoming new console generation, MK: Special Forces kept PS1 alive in the west.
Dude, that game intro was sick! If it were a TV show, I'd have watched it.
Matt: The intro is great.
Me: I don't believe you.
(watches intro)
Me: I'll never doubt you again.
And yet the character of Tremor became a very requested character to be added in the main titles for some reason
I believe unique powers and being a previously-unused color for a ninja (brown) highly contributed to that.
People just can't get enough of those wacky pallet-swapped ninjas.
MK Shaolin Monks was awesome. I’d love a remaster of that.
You could do a video about Hybrid Heaven for the N64. Is very haard to find any information about this game, and its super unique.
I played this game when i was a kid and i loved it. Now watching this video i can only think that i was a innocent child who just wanted to play every game that got into my hands
stranglehold was actually pretty dope
It was a fine game, but it cost shitloads of money to make and didn't sell very well at all.
It was also the only way to get Hard Boiled on Blu Ray for quite awhile.
I literally found your channel a week or two ago and I love everything about it! Keep it up man and I can’t wait to watch everything on my days off
You have the best channel Matt
Some call me Johnny sent me here 👀
That intro is Venture Bros. Af
Final Fight Streetwise would be great for this. From seven sons to Trent's released concept art video you can see a lot of heart would've gone into the game had they both given the proper time and resources.
Chad Serrant you know it bro! I actually just stumbled across his solo channel and I've been binge watching while I'm on bed rest.
Kombat time
I'm confused, isn't that Tommy Tallarico in that one image labeled Dave Michicich?
Yes. Yes it was.
Yeah, what's the deal there? Strange.
9:53 that intro is gold
This is a series that I never knew I wanted, and I would love to see more!
2:18 - Always happy to see Qui Gon Chi make an appearance in a video.
Love the editing style. Real excited for more :D
Oh boy Daikatana is next. 20 years later and it's still a joke.
John Romero is about to make you his bitch!
FinalDragoon *_you were right_*
!BIG SWORD!
Love the videos matt, keep making great content
I'm really enjoying this series! I hope you make some more. Cheers
just stumbled on your channel by i can't remember how, but i like your content. keep it up dude.
@8:01 The guy on the left is Tommy Tallarico, not Dave Michicich.
Hey Matt! I have to say that me and my friend enjoyed watching this and we would love to have more Kontent like this! Please keep it up and we love you!
Love this series. Great work
I bought if for $20 and beat it that night! Glad you put in the intro, worthy of seeing. Loved Midway for their arcade sports, racing titles
I got Dr. Muto as a kid and I remember really enjoying how creative and fun it was. It probably doesn’t hold up now, but the memories will always be there.
This is the greatest name for a series, great video btw.
LMFAO the intro is just funny i dont know how anyone took this game serious if they did cuz Jax doing that while turn around pose with the gun has me weak
4:55 i LOVE that he has the EXACT same joke in here that's in the most recent mortal kombat sub zero mythology episode that made me laugh my ass off
dude awesome video! I have the same amount of love for MK always will!
On the plus side they did FINALLY get it right with Shaolin Monks!
This game's intro is what happens when The Martin Lawrence show and a chummy 007 flick have a kid - it was a mistake in the best & worst of ways. I love it lol.
While I know it's likely not a game series that Matt's particularly invested in, I'd love to see him tackle the death of the X-COM franchise prior to Enemy Unknown resurrecting it; Terror from the Deep was a hurried attempt to cash in on the success of the original that was essentially a reskin with some terrible design ideas but decent atmosphere, Apocalypse was pretty good but rough and with a kind of odd art direction, Interceptor and Enforcer were laughable dogshit, and then it all died before Alliance and Genesis came out. And then there's the debacle of the Bureau.
man i love this show and there's soooo many. Mmmmm. One of those moments when you find a well of goodness to binge.
I always wondered what happened to John Tobias. Thanks Matty!
Showed up late to your work, but man, I'm loving your videos. Do you ever plan to do Tao Feng?
Bro that intro SLAPS holy shit
I'm still waiting for the original story of Special Forces to be released to the public
Your simpsons references are always on point and crack me up! I get the vibe that you watched a lot of the simpsons and love it as much as i do.
now we know where Archer got its intro from
I feel like it's worth mentioning that now John Tobias works at Zynga. You know, those people that make those Facebook games. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
A "Wha Happun?" for Final Fight Streetwise would be really cool. Or maybe "Bad Day L.A." Something from the same era as BMX XXX. There was lots of trash on the PS2 lol
The stories behind these massive disasters and flops are always so interesting
Stranglehold was a good fun game though, even though it didn't do to well. At least to me it was.
The thing I remember most about WrestleMania 21 is the goddamn awesome-looking Judgement Day arena. Something about how the stage lights looked in that game was just super-cool. I don't know how to explain it but I've never seen anything else like it.
The old into for Wuh Happuh makes me feel like I'm having a stroke
Hey, good to see someone else who's played that game! I liked it for sure.
That would explain Jax's Friendship from MK 11
Me: (watches MK Special Forces intro)
Also Me: ...I don't want to live on this planet anymore!
That was not a picture of Dave Michicich. It was from an interview of Dave Michicich and the other main Mortal Kombat team by Tommy Tallarico, on Electric Playground TV on G4 in 1998. The man pictured was Tommy Tallarico who was a host and now leads Video Games Live.
Please don't stop these videos Matt, they're the fucking hypest shit!
I remember renting this one time. I was mad that week.
This is my new favorite game review channel
1:03 Oh past Matt, if only you knew
Great work sir spot on haha
The intro is amazing.
That intro is amazing wtf
I can't wait to see you tackle _that_ game next.
I would love to see a video on Clive Barker's Jericho and Undying.
These are fascinating videos haha
I played this a few years ago and I thought I would never see this game again... until now.
Man, I might be the only person on earth that played mk mythologies and actually had fun.
What on god’s green but mostly blue earth was that MK Special Forces intro? I had to stop the video and look up the intro to make sure you weren’t goofing around. In a bitter sweet kinda way, you were not kidding.
One of the good things I can say about this game despite me never playing it is the music!
11:22
fuck that made me jump
Great video, didn't know the dev team took that big of a hit, I always thought it was just Tobias that left and everyone kept doing their thing and then later reunited.
If things turned out differently, Special Forces could've been a fun dumb coop game if they kept Sonya and a lot of the things they took out, like a proto Shaolin Monks
I actually loved Mythologies on Playstation. But man was it frustratingly rockhard to finish.
4:56 subzero just got told by Quan chi that he isnt going to be in special forces
I've watched about 5 of these now and I can't stop asking myself. Did you do an "ad break questionarium" for OSW years ago?
That's not Dave Michicich in the picture at 7:49, that's a picture of Tommy
Tallarico.
Hey Matt, an idea: “What happen: Midway edition” lol
10:06 Wow amazing intro to a game!
Stranglehold was a childhood favorite of mine. Now I'm so curious about Wha Happuned to it...
the graphics for that wrestling game looks amazing
Did that jax intro have a dog barking sample 😂 it was the style of the time
Nice video.
I don't know if I should be happy or sad that I can guess Daikatana just from that quote
Street Fighter x Tekken and the uncertain future of Tekken x Street Fighter would be a great video for Wha Happun, especially if you get Woolie in on it for a fighterpedia vibe.
