- in todays episode we go and try to get this abandoned 1949 GMC running.
its got the famous 2 stroke detroit diesel in it.
we are approaching 1000 subscribers which is amazing, thankyou.
at 1000 subs we will be doing a small giveaway and also launching our merch, just funny shirts and decals to start.
selling merch will help us fund things such as buying run down vehicles and fixing them up, auction cars, and larger giveaway prizes.
wouldn't mind doing some truck testing and a bunch of other interesting ideas are floating around in my wacky head.
also if you think pb blaster should send me a case of juice please comment below.
again, thanks for watching and supporting our hobby. Авто/Мото
When I saw "1949 GMC Detroit Diesel", I clicked right away.
Me too.
I’m Captain Jack from New York. Enjoyed you Tube. I have 12v71 TI’s in my boat. After 6 months on the hard over the winter, I pull the valve covers and clamp vice grips to the rack. If she starts to run away, you can slam them shut certainly don’t want a runaway below deck.
Old Detroit’s will either run or run away.
To me it sounded like it was knocking. But most Detroit`s will start unless they have been over heated. But very smart move by checking the fuel rack first.
I thought it was knocking too and running on 2 cylinders.
Didn't sound healthy at all.
Always like to hear these old dogs come back to life.
Boy that old truck got to be worth something to somebody with that factory 3 banger...had to count injectors three times before it sank in how many cylinders it had ..lol nice find my man....... .
Wish I got to it In time. After I got her running she sold for about 4 grand. Truck was from out west so was pretty clean.. definitely one of the coolest I've tinkered on.
Good stuff. I like to see the old stuff come back to life. Looking forward to the adventures..
Yeah babe yeah you've got the old girl going nicely done i am so proud of you guys thank you
It's only running on 2 cylinders!
Smart thing to check the fuel rack first and to be prepared for a runaway.
Here I was, falling down the rabbit hole of RUclips and I see 1949 GMC Detroit diesel, will it start.....of course it will. Great video and even better seeing this run!.
Thanks! Yeah as soon as the owner said "that's got a detroit 2 stroke", I had to ask if i could try and get it started.
ole detroit sounds good
Nothing runs and sounds like an old Detroit 2 stroke Diesel, good stuff thanks..
Love those two strokes
Love those old chevys! I have a 51 flat bed farm truck. 49 was the year I was born!
That's pretty awesome!
Dang right that detroit will start!!
the starter button wire goes from the button then almost to the starter and back is because in 1949 those trucks had a starter pedal this unit was updated with a starter that had a solenoid on it .
I didnt know that, thanks for the information!
Excellent video
Thankyou
Love the videos guy, keep at it....
Thank you very much.
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 Welcome
Gotta get it driving!!
213 cubic inches for that big truck. Should be a monster.............Jay
Que maravilla ! Tres nuevos inyectores y queda precioso Me gusto cuando vi que antes que nada comprobaron el libre movimiento de las cremalleras de los inyectores y la tabla enfrente de la toma de aire por si acaso la disparada
I have 3 buses with 71 series Detroits and they are work horses. Hitting hard like a injector isn't working well but a little heat and time usually brings them back plus a rusty exhaust valve or two. Nice job guys!
Thankyou, I know it's not a perfect motor but for 70 years old shes doing well.
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 I have a 1947 greyhound bus that sat for 50 years with a 671 that the valve cover was off so long the fuel jumpers were rusted through . Vacuumed the dirt and leaves, replaced 3 injectors, all the fuel tubes and she runs amazing!
@@rodneymiddleton9624 that's just awesome! Thanks for Sharing
Rodney is a rock star in the Detroit world... Just this morning, I was driving my 1941 Yellow Coach Silversides with a 671 today. They are simple and reliable.
hella nice, good planning there with checking the injector pins and being ready with the wooden board if the worst would come to happen ;)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
22:30 I like yer "knife".
Love you guys
Sounds ok hey? One thing about electrical issues in this vintage is that it's possible to fix not like the new disposable crap nowadays.
I know, I missed out he sold this gem for 4500 bucks. I think I may try to get the international off him.its a cool truck
HECK YES! PB IS A GREAT PRODUCT AND IF YOU'RE USING IT IN YOUR VIDEOS WITH SUCCESS, PB SHOULD SEND A CASE OF BLASTER!
I agree!!
25:11 SHE'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!!! 🤙💪
Sure is! I want to own this truck
EVERYBODY calls em a Detroit now, but when I was a kid, everybody called em a Jimmy, for GMC. GM made the motor, the blower, AND the truck!
This one is even marked general motors.
Komee cmc 💪🇺🇸
I could just picture that wingnut coming off inside that motor
Which wingnut? Air cleaner had a 9/16 and the valve cover nuts dont come off the valve cover. I cant think of anything else that had a wing nut style to it.
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 oh I'm sorry
Yeah the 9/16 nut I was hoping it wasn't going to fall in the engine because I noticed you screwed it back on. You know from the vibration of the engine running that's all I'm saying.
@@antoniomancini1794 I never thought of that.. I will for next time, thanks!
The old screamin demons Detroit Diesel
New subscriber here, fully on account of you deadass looking like my long lost Stateside twin. (You need to grow that hair out though, I look strange without a ponytail haha)
Haha that's awesome! Found your doppelganger!! Thanks for watching and the subscribe! Means a lot, doing a giveaway at 1000 subs (that's like 3 more subs).
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 Having watched the rest of the video I can say my choice to subscribe was a good one, looks like you've got some cool content to keep me from getting any real work done lol. (hint- might not be a good idea to include me in the giveaway draw as shipping to the UK is probably enough to break a man, much as I hate to exclude myself from a chance at free stuff!)
Good health you you & yours dude
Hell yeah red line until the problems disappear
Not even close to redline, also what problem?
13:30 God I hate electrical shit. Never took the time to learn it. And never will! Damn funny place for an alternator though, especially considerin' the rig never came with one.
Surprised he wouldn't remove air cleaner and find a block of wood to shut off the air intake, and check to see if the fuel rack is free and doesn't have any stuck injectors. These things are a real safeguard to not having a Detroit "run away" and self-destruct.
I'm confused? I did those things, to make sure it wouldnt run away on me.
Excellent hope it's a 71 not a 53 series, 3 53 little small for a truck. I know they had 4 53 s in alot of them.
Was a 3 53
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 its a 3-71,
@@damienodonohue1327 3-53
Hi guys, great video great motor. You can't kill those Detroit diesels that's for sure unless it's just something catastrophic, they just run on and on. Wished I had that motor in my 96 Silverado. Although the 4.3 she does just fine, 177000 MI and she runs like a charm, Ice Cold Air great Heat fully loaded. Only problem Rust Belt. Anyway guys I wanted to say something to you and don't take it the wrong way but if you want people to follow your videos more try not to drop so many f- bombs. I watch a lot of videos, different kinds oh, different people. Most of them don't use foul language, don't get me wrong I slip up every once in awhile. I am not a Bible thumping Christian, but I do consider myself in the service of Our Lord. I do want you guys to succeed with your Channel more and more I think you really have something and can do even better so keep it up. Stay safe stay well and as always God bless.
Thanks for the tip, these motors are great. They turn fuel and air into music for my ears
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 thanks for the reply, you know I don't know much about Diesel's 2-stroke or 4-stroke I'm learning though the newer diesels are so much different then the older ones. Don't get me wrong I understand the conception of how they work I just think that the two strokes are so simple. I know what you mean they are music to the ears that is for sure. Have you ever caught the bus Grease Monkey Channel?? He loves to Strokes that's for sure! If you Channel strong brother hope to see more and more videos.
All symptoms show it was a GMC factory installation, but the year has gotta be 1952 , because of push button door handles plus vent windows . Yes, the 10SI alternator is on a homemade bracket, replacing the original Delco generator,,,,,,,,,,,,plus the dry aircleaner with it's offset mounting bracket replaced an original oil bath. One injector is hammering pretty loud, as well, but thanks for the revival !
Owner told me it was a 49, no original tags or I'd plates left on the old truck, that I could find. Wasnt sure about that alt but I know the air intake was home made. Thanks for the injector tip!
Sorry Janet
That is a repowered truck. Probably by your local Detroit Diesel Garage.
@@markdeheck783 would be cool to find out for sure. Looks original.
Finding an original DD in any vehicle is rare. There was a robust refurbish industry.
@@SilversidesSage I dont doubt it. It looks original, doesnt mean it is. A good job was done that's for sure.
I just saw another video of a truck identical to this one, in Alberta. A fella said in the comments that he now owns the truck, and it's in Ontario. Could be the same one.
If the video was from 5 or so years ago it could be the same. It was baught in Alberta and is now in Ontario.
It took long enough to find all three cylinders but if the brakes are off and its not in any deep hole, pointed downhill, it might just move.... she is real tired. Those engines were better in skidders where they just ran wide open till they died... which for my thinking was never soon enough. I think they only had like eighty five horsepower when new
Brakes are seized 100%. It should be tired lol its 70 years old. I just wanted to see if she runs, it does the owner can now ask more money for the truck.
I am amazed, how did your team find such junk, and then was it done a total repair until it was functioning again? You and the great team.
I found a farmer that had a bunch of old junk.
We just got the vehicles running, I don't own them. I want to buy the green international

U were touching the wrong pins on the starter solenoid
Bet if it get injectors it would run like new.
With it was mine. This year I'll be trippling down on content and doing some real projects.
You two act just like me and my friends when we work on stuff, from the random comments to the insults, and the goofing off with everything.
Yeah we have known eachother over 20 years. It's fun working on things together. Gotta have fun!
You gotta have fun or it ain't fun! Me and one of was working on an old bronco they got. Boy was that a riot, we dropped it to many time cause the jack is clapped out. Finely got the damn thing done and he hit a tree😂😂
Where's it at? For sale?
Hamilton Ontario. It is for sale
Is that a 3-53 or 3-71?
3-71 to the best of my knowledge, 71 was made from 1938 and on, the 53 wasnt made till the mid 50s. This truck has a 53 from a gen set or something on the flatbed.
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 Yup 3-71 53s had 4 bolts holding the valve cover on.
Didn't know they made a 3-71.
Yup, started back in 1938
I didn't know they put them in 49' GMC's!
@@raywilson800 body style was 48-54. I've confirmed factory install in 1952. The owner told me it was a 49 but it technically could be a 52. All Id tags are worn off. Didnt check for vin.
@@jackstandsandoilpans6687 I had a GMC 6500 with a 6V-53. I think it was a 1967. It wasn't air brakes though. That's a really cool truck, I don't think I've ever seen one.
Dang. Did he already sell it?
