Why Ferrari is now Red Bull’s biggest F1 threat

  • Second has always been seen as a failure for a team of Ferrari’s size and ambition. So being best of the rest behind Red Bull so far in 2024 is no cause for celebration.
But Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was Maranello. Ferrari requires sustained, consistent improvement if it is to emerge as a Red Bull-beater.
Ferrari matched its own record of 15 consecutive seasons without an F1 world championship in 2023, but only four races later it has already emphatically pulled clear of the jostling pack to become Red Bull's main threat in F1 2024. Here, we explain how.
    00:00 Intro
    00:52 Second fastest car
    02:18 Tyre trouble tamed
    03:35 Peakiness cured
    05:08 Operational sharpness
    06:48 Development gains needed

Maybe from a simplistic point of view it could look like a similar car, but the concepts are definitely different, also, this is the ground effect era, the majority of the aero effect comes from the bottom of the floor, which we very seldom see. Thats why so many people get confunsed about zero pod concepts and stuff like that.
Redbull implements a small vertical slit concept "oh look the redbull has a no sidepods like the original mercedes, NEWEY made it work, he is a GENIUS!!!!!, Toto must be Furious...." pffff

The biggest unknown right now is still McLaren, For all the good work of Ferrari, They're still the ones showing flashes of pace (especially over 1 lap) ahead of them at certain tracks, much like Ferrari have shown flashes ahead of Red Bull in Australia. it's all close for best of the rest, but If McLarens updates deliver even half of last seasons steps (from a low baseline, admittedly), then they'll probably still be Red Bulls biggest outright threat at certain tracks by a decent margin. Until Ferrari show they can at least keep up in a development race, they probably won't have Red Bull too worried outside of the odd race here and there when they don't quite dial the car in.

"The results prove it, Ferrari is on the up", while actively comparing to a year that Ferrari started OK and then tanked terribly, "the trajectory is clear" as it was every other time in this drought they found a short window of form.... Way to early to really say if they have got to grips with the regulations and have a development path that will actually go somewhere. I hope so, as it is pretty terrible for the sport to not even have a doubt on who wins every single race baring a DNF - at least in Hamilton's domination years the teammate was close enough to push him, and before that with refuelling the tactical game generally mattered so much more the best car isn't just an I win button... But as Ferrari's progress through a season doesn't tend to be as good as the other top teams way to early to say 'great they are nailing this, they will be there'.
And comprehensively leading the charge of the pack is probably optimistic too. Don't get me wrong they have a decent car that seems a little more universally capable that the others near the front and have made what turn out to be better strategy calls, but the chasing pack is on the whole still rather more stuck to each other than any are to the RB's rear wing - so only the smallest changes to race tactics, tyre allocations etc...
