Honestly the fact this place got made from some high-schoolers writing a paper was really touching to me, and the owners keeping their roots is awesome. Great episode.
I had the pleasure of eating my first and only roast pork sandwich from John's earlier this year while visiting my brother in Philly. I can say, with ZERO hesitation, that it was the best sandwich I've ever had. As Lucas points out, there is a lot going on - the degree and complexity of flavor is unexpected and explosive. If you're a first timer, as I was, I recommend the following configuration: roast pork, spinach, SHARP provolone, and long hots. Also, be aware when you arrive that there are two separate lines, depending on what you're ordering.
As someone who lived in Philly and then the suburbs of Philly for over 10 years, I can say that this attitude embodies why it's universally agreed that Philly fans are the biggest assholes in the sports world. It's funny how quickly it became unacceptable to wear anything but a Phillies Jersey only after they were good for a year but afterwards, we had bandwagon Mets/Yankees/Dodgers/etc fans on every street corner.
Club Soda no offense but I’m pretty sure that’s not true...any chance a Dallas fan gets to bring up how many rings they have they do...even though the last ring was over 20 years ago. And tribalism is what makes sports fun...Philly has the best fans in the world. They’re die hard, honest, tough SOBs who tell it how it is. If the team sucks they’ll say so, but they’ll always be there to support them.
1. I’m so happy that you didn’t get Cheez Whiz on that steak. Thank you !!!!!!! 2. Interviewing a guy in a Patriots shirt at John’s Roast Pork. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 At least he seemed honest and complimentary! 😄😄😄
Can confirm, best roast pork sandwich EVER! on a side note, what long time South Philly resident wears a patriots jersey? Get outta town you bum! Fly Eagles Fly
Spot on. Live in Philly and the progression for a lot of residents is cheesesteaks to Denics roast pork and then you ultimately realize John's is far and a way the best.
Carlton Reese true... and on a cheesesteak you add ketchup - these visitors don’t know that and they always frown upon the suggestion until they try it.
The best roast pork is at Dinic's at Reading Terminal Market, served with broccoli rabe, not spinach. The rabe adds a lot to the sandwich and I think spinach is just too muted a flavor for such a sandwich. Tourists, please try it with the rabe.
Galactic123 gosh yes! Dinic's roast pork is the best. I love it with extra sharp provolone and broccoli rabe. I worked around 13th st and Chestnut st and i would come to work a couple hours earlier so I could run and get some roast pork sandwich.
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about Dinics if I’m being honest some people say it’s great and others say it’s all hype. Personally I absolutely adore broccoli rabe but I’d try Johns first any day off the week
Dunno if it was just the day I went or my own personal taste, but Dinics was very average. Pork had no flavour, and the broccoli rabe was overpowering. Wasn't a fan....
You absolutely picked the best place in the city for a cheesesteak and a roast pork. Let me start width John's cheesesteak it is the best anywhere around and he does not use that stupid cheese whiz crap. In fact he doesn't even have it on the menu. This is the number one Cheesesteak for me in Philadelphia. Now his roast pork is also one of the best. I like it better then Tony Luke's but only by a slight very slight margin. Tony Luke's has a fabulous roast pork Italian but I don't care that much for his cheesesteaks. I cannot wait to get home and stop in Philadelphia and grab a roast pork Italian from John's Roast Pork. The one thing I should mention is both of these sandwiches need to be unwrapped as quickly as possible so the roll does not Steam and get soft and then eat them as soon as you can. I'm salivating right now.
I live in kentucky, wife went here on a business trip, i hear its the best of both worlds, and she tried several, dinics, cosmis, pats, genos, tony lukes, although she did like tony lukes cheesesteak with the whiz, but she prefers the spinach over the broccoli rabe on the pork roast
wow. we went from this type of food establishment to the most current 10min hot stuff! what a bizzare direction we are going in the culinary world. We are all just getting chopped.
Lucas please let me know. Which sandwich is better. The pork sandwich or the Chicago Italian beef? They’re very similar in preparation and presentation so which is better?
Truth. The other white meat can be divine. When I lived in Jersey, there was this diner that sold fresh pork like I've never had since. I still miss that pork after 22 years.
John’s has amazing sandwiches, but my only gripe is the anti-broccoli rabe stance. Sorry, spinach doesn’t cut it. The rabe is the true balance. Sure, the pork is great at John’s, but nothing beats the bitter element of the rabe and no seasoned spinach will ever do it justice. They have a good pork and cheese sandwich, but the rabe is necessary to make it true Philly-style Italian roast pork. Either way, give them a shot, they got great food no matter what. (don’t forget the long hots either or were fighting)
Johns doesn't use broccoli rabe which I love on my roast pork....other than that they're awesome. I like DiNics roast pork better but its only my opinion can't go wrong with either. And Johns cheese steak is amazing.
Eater, please please please put a link to the business for Google maps in the description boxes, so we can add them to lists and visit the real deal. 🖖
Chef Rafi's Awesome World rice and gravy! Unconventional? Yes, but delicious! Also candied yams, cornbread dressing, collard/mustard greens, and mac n cheese. What would thanksgiving be without macaroni and cheese?
"Let's put this aside" my ass. I'll film these for free if I can just get the halfs you don't eat. Hell, even if you take a few bites out of it I'll still take it
Most of the time it’s just ribeye or sirloin sliced thin with salt and pepper, nothing too fancy. When it’s done right with fried onions cheesesteaks are heavily but most tourist trap ones aren’t the best. Roast pork is better hands down.
Honestly the fact this place got made from some high-schoolers writing a paper was really touching to me, and the owners keeping their roots is awesome. Great episode.

dmmontal - long hots yasss! 🙌🏻
It’s funny how Lucas always walk like a slowmotion robot in the intros. Can’t stop laughing 😂😂 everytime
Sean Pallesen I thought only I noticed that
It's more of a strut
Bring back the mom and pop places like this.Much better than a franchise imitation .
I went there today!! Because of this video! I went to philly with a friend for a day trip and it was FANTASTIC!!
100% the best sandwich in all of Philly. musta gone here 100 times while i was in school
Finally! Philly does not get the media it deserves but I'm going there first ahead of NYC. This is a really good feature of an original.
Seriously, out of all the people you could interview in South Philly, you interview the guy with the patriots t-shirt on?
theothersoonjae probably cause he’s tall. No fancy camera work needed!
Club Soda anyone from Philly who love the cowboys aren’t true Philadelphians...we bleed green.
As someone who lived in Philly and then the suburbs of Philly for over 10 years, I can say that this attitude embodies why it's universally agreed that Philly fans are the biggest assholes in the sports world. theothersoonjae He was beaten shortly after.
Fantastic. Gonna make both of these for lunch tomorrow.
this guy looks dead inside but he explains the food so well
I was with the first 150k subsricbers of Eater. Now it’s 2.1M. Wow! Good job you guys! Good content.
I’m freaking drooling over here, thanks a lot lucas 😒
“I love a soggy sandwich” - Lucas.
Yeah he’s definitely from Chicago lol
Lol
I love living in South Jersey, 10 minutes from the WW or BF Bridges. I can hit Philly right now and grab these. I think I may do just that. 🤙🏼
1. I’m so happy that you didn’t get Cheez Whiz on that steak. Thank you !!!!!!!
2. Interviewing a guy in a Patriots shirt at John’s Roast Pork. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 At least he seemed honest and complimentary! 😄😄😄
This place is incredible
If I were here, I’d go to both. Got two at d’nicks years ago and I never forgot it. I definitely liked it more than the cheesesteaks I had at pats.
Would you say this pork sandwich was deeply profound?
FUNKYNESS
I need this in my life right now...
Infinite Athletics you are spamming this everywhere, geez
Fucking everywhere
Holy Moly def. annoying as fuck
I'm eating one right now. 1st time in Philly too
One of my bucket lists in this life time!
not going to lie.....this season is much better than last season
Lucas! Wishing you and your family a Blessed Thanksgiving. Thank you for sharing this delicious video. Blessings ChefMike
This may be my favorite episode. The story about the guy that passed out is priceless.
Damn i miss cheesesteak, I live in Seoul Korea now.
Can always make it yourself? With dog meat.
Ben deen finds american food in seoul. They always seem to deliver
"the spinach is great. it's a different animal"
Can confirm, best roast pork sandwich EVER!
on a side note, what long time South Philly resident wears a patriots jersey? Get outta town you bum! Fly Eagles Fly
They couldn't find a guy with a Cowboys jersey?
Spot on. Live in Philly and the progression for a lot of residents is cheesesteaks to Denics roast pork and then you ultimately realize John's is far and a way the best.
I think I need to make a road trip to Philly! 😍
Philly has the best food in the world!!!
Nah that would be 90 miles north but i agree they do have some decent eats.
If your from philly you grew up eating johns roast pork and cheesesteaks....the whole world is just late to the party
Carlton Reese true... and on a cheesesteak you add ketchup - these visitors don’t know that and they always frown upon the suggestion until they try it.
Saw a Pats fan in Philly, immediate like

I love Johns but the fact they use spinach instead of broccoli rabe is a bit of a downer.
Yes! Went there all the time when I was at Temple Uni!
Dunno if it was just the day I went or my own personal taste, but Dinics was very average. Pork had no flavour, and the broccoli rabe was overpowering. Wasn't a fan....
Best cheesesteak in the city no question about it
You absolutely picked the best place in the city for a cheesesteak and a roast pork. Nice video!! Lived there for 3 years a while back never heard of them!

We need to slide on over to Philly for some pork!
so glad that i live like 15 mins from this place xD
Do you know the cut of pork they use?
Me too I’m about to go
Friend from Philly took me to this place for my first authentic Philly cheesesteak. It was great!
Do you know the cut of meat they use? I am on the opposite side of the world and would like to duplicate it.
Greg - Rib Eye.
*I love pork sandwiches!!!!*
To go to Philly and eat many cheesesteaks is on my bucket list 👌
jeez. this video hit me hard. I'm drooling.
staticbb yeah. Not a good video to watch at 1am where i am from.
love this video
Finally a new episode.
Still can't believe this is the guy from the Mythbusters parody .. !
Lucas is an angel we need but we donot deserve :)
Went here on my trip from Australia, was so delicious. Food coma in the jeep directly after however.
Lucas! Love your show!! Do you have any places around New Orleans you recommend?
John's is the sh*t! I'm glad u finally made ur way there!
You should have tried their Roast Beef with gravy. That good stuff too.
great video :)
WTH, I just ate, but I'm drooling.
Love you Lucas!
wow. we went from this type of food establishment to the most current 10min hot stuff! what a bizzare direction we are going in the culinary world. We are all just getting chopped.
Best host eater has
Good for the eaters. ..
Bourdain takes me here
Lucas, you should try Bradley's Cheesesteak in State College!!!
They don’t have mountains of meat and onion that they pick at throughout the day.
Shots fired
listen to him, philly is known for the cheese steak, perfected the roast pork
Lucas please let me know. Which sandwich is better. The pork sandwich or the Chicago Italian beef? They’re very similar in preparation and presentation so which is better?
Like that place
Truth. The other white meat can be divine. When I lived in Jersey, there was this diner that sold fresh pork like I've never had since. I still miss that pork after 22 years.
Provolone is far better on a Philly than American White or Cheeze-Wiz. Fight me.
You're absolutely right.
three words: provolone cheese-whiz
Maybe but we sold a ton of steaks with American.cant be all that bad
Please don’t call it a “Philly”... You instantly loose all credibility.
Roast Pork, then Italian Beef, then Cheesesteak. That's just my humble opinion.
I live in France and I will probably never eat one of those pork sandwiches. This makes me very sad.
Jesus that looks good
John’s has amazing sandwiches, but my only gripe is the anti-broccoli rabe stance. Sorry, spinach doesn’t cut it. The rabe is the true balance. Sure, the pork is great at John’s, but nothing beats the bitter element of the rabe and no seasoned spinach will ever do it justice. Rip to Ian's jawline.
My one and only gripe is I prefer Broccoli Rabe over spinach on the roast pork sandwich
How do you never gain any weight Lucus!? I got to try this sandwich next time I'm in Philly!
Because he does not eat over maintenance calory norm
And for roast beef don't miss nicks at 20th and jackson.
Old Tony Luck fantastic sandwich 🥪
... and you know the best NY pizza in philly right? Please !
The dream job
What did he say at the very end of the video?
He predicted the super bowl
John's is very good. Paisano's is excellent. DiNics is superlative.
I'm hungry...lol
did his english teacher taught him biology.
If I ever had to go to the electric chair a sandwich from John's would be my last meal!!
Dude didn’t put his hands down once during his whole 3 minute schpeil!! That’s South Philly
Philly really is the Sandwich capital of the US I'm from NYC and i admit it.
every sandwich is better than a cheese stick
I need that jacket
Eater, please please please put a link to the business for Google maps in the description boxes, so we can add them to lists and visit the real deal. 🖖
Guy's got a lot of balls wearing a Patriots shirt in south Philly
Not really, just do not wear a Cowboys shirt. The Patriots are irrelevant to us here.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!! What are you eating with your turkey??
Chef Rafi's Awesome World rice and gravy! Unconventional? Yes, but delicious! Also candied yams, cornbread dressing, collard/mustard greens, and mac n cheese. What would thanksgiving be without macaroni and cheese?
Nothing... I'm not American
Plates...imbecile.
All the standard thanks giving sides
Sadness
Beef >>>>>> Pork. Some people will never understand, though.
"Let's put this aside" my ass. I'll film these for free if I can just get the halfs you don't eat. Hell, even if you take a few bites out of it I'll still take it
Anyone know what cut of pork is best for this sandwich?
Pork belly.
Lucas, you are so darn attractive.
lucas's way of criticizing food is so oddly satisfying to me and his choice of words is next level shit T.T
That one guy looks like a thick version of Jesse Pinkman.
It’s easy Lucas=Like👍
Where's Nick Solares?!
When you answered john pork’s call:
So the big question is, is the philly cheese steak seasoned?
Most of the time it’s just ribeye or sirloin sliced thin with salt and pepper, nothing too fancy. When it’s done right with fried onions cheesesteaks are heavily but most tourist trap ones aren’t the best. Roast pork is better hands down.
Industrial, Philadelphia.
