If Michael Anthony would’ve been a superstar bass player, he never would’ve fit into VH. MA deserves to write a book and unleash the fury. Nobody in that business deserves to more than he. He’s taken lot of crap by those closest to him and he doesn’t say a word. Always taken the high road.
Write the book. F them all.

I’m a bassist… Mike is amazing. Perfect for that band.

Yeah, I heard DLR and Mikey didn't like Steve Rosen much either. Guess the feelings were mutual.

I have never liked Steve Rosen, every interview he just seems like a real creep. This interview does not change my mind.

WOW!!! Jaw dropping thoughts and opinions about Michael Anthony as a bass player. I’m a former semi professional drummer who has been a VH fan since 1979 and consider the first 6 Van Halen albums my rock n roll Bible. One of the Top 5 reasons Van Halen has been my forever number one rock band is because of Michael Anthony’s contribution both as a background vocalist AND as a bass player. His bass playing is ROCK SOLID and ALWAYS in the groove!!! He and Ross Valory from Journey are and always will be my top 3 favorite bass players for that very reason. YES I understand that they are not considered the “greatest” nor do their styles come close to the complex styles of John Paul Jones Geddy Lee, John Entwhistle, Chris Squire, etc., but for what I like and prefer in a bass player my two choice’s are a GRAND SLAM!!!
As far as David Lee Roth goes he is the GREATEST frontman EVER and his singing “style” fit Van Halen PERFECTLY! Just like their shows he was energetic and fun and his vocals were more difficult than people realize.
Since the late 80’s I have had a clear explanation of different eras of Van Halen, it all comes down to the “L” word…
The Sammy era gave them legitimate “Longevity”.
The DLR era is what made them “Legendary”!!!

Mike is a great bassist, without his backing vocals there would never had the same. DLR is one of the greatest front man in rock history. I won’t be buying this book. What a jerk.

    What’s the matter Rosen?
Mike didn’t give you the exclusive?
    Unbelievable

Just coincidentally those are the same sentiments that Eddie had about David and Mike?

OU812 was their least guitar album? Not even close to their best. The debut album with David Lee is iconic. This Rosen guy is a total nerd

“He had a groove,” “He was perfect for the band.” That’s all that matters.

So Rosen criticizes Mike Anthony's bass playing, yet he admits that he was the right bass player for the band. Ummmm, OK. Essentially Rosen is unfairly criticizing Anthony for taking one for the team by keeping the train from going off the rails, because he doesn't play like Chris Squire or John Entwistle. Eddie and Alex's styles were so frenetic that somebody had to hold it together..not unlike Greg Lake's role in ELP. Billy Sheehan was offered the VH bass playing gig more than once, but he turned them down, telling them they had the right bass player already. I never liked Dave, and I never considered him a great singer, but he was a charismatic front man and knew how to work not only the stage, but the press. Like it or not, that's part of it. (btw, the opinions of journalists and critics have no more value than mine or anyone else's).

Michael Anthony. Perfect player for that band and critical background vocals. Also the only band member that has consistently taken the high road through all the years of VH drama/garbage. Remove any of the 4 main ingredients of either era and it doesn't have the same impact. 2 incredible decade long runs of VH.

Anyone who knows music understands why Chris Squier was right for Yes, Entwistle was right for The Who and why neither would've worked in Van Halen. Michael Anthony was the perfect foil to Eddie's intricate virtuosity and Alex's groove. Dave Lee Roth was one of the greatest front men there's ever been with bags of charisma, personality and humour. You don't get that? Thats cool, i guess you're just not a fan of the band.

I always respected Edward's ability. We ALL did. He was a genuine legend in his own time. But when he publicly dissed Mike by saying that he (Edward) had to show Mike all the bass parts, I lost a certain amount of respect. There was no reason for it.
But then I realized something important. Mike was locked into playing what Edward wanted. Most guitarists.... even great ones, are not necessarily great bass players. When rock guitarists play bass, they often tend to rely on 8th notes. Unchained is a great VH song, but the 8th note bass patterns are typical. ( and boring... sorry) I can imagine Edward demanding Mike to play them. Typical rock bass tends to rely on the rhythmic aspect of 8th notes because they form a "foundation" for the band.
Clearly, Van Halen did not want a "melodic" bass player. The band wanted a rhythmic foundation.... which they got with Mike.
When people diss Mike's bass, they're actually dissing what VH wanted him to do in the first place.
