    thank you so much for posting this and sharing! I have been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out the best way to turn the rocks I find into beads for Christmas presents and this video pushed me over the edge to purchase the Covington bead mill!

    Thanks for sharing and interesting and informative video. I think they turned out perfectly. Not being perfectly round gives them a little character. Looking forward to seeing what you add to that contraption next. Take care and be safe.

      Thanks Clayton. I was thinking the same thing about the somewhat odd shapes. If I were smart, next up would probably be agate. But I am really thinking it might be nice to do silver.

    I loved your video. Years ago I bought a huge used Chinese bead mill from an inclinometer factory in Ohio, to this day I've never run a batch through it. It needs so many blanks, it might have room for over a hundred beads per batch. Your video has really inspired me to try and fire it up again 🙄

    • @meMiner

      Good luck with your project. I hope you find a way to make so many blanks. It would drive me nuts to cut that many. ;-)

    Interesting machine and seems to working good. Very good thing that you warned about cutting the rocks, because I skipped that part because of being afraid you losing the fingers.
    I once heard one person using washing machine just by making RPM much slower and filling it with sand and just but rough gems inside and it would take days or weeks for them to be ball shaped. Never seen the result or the machine how he customized it, but sure hope seeing someday. Sorry for bad english/typos and shit.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Vault. Great comment.
      When I was young, I used to check in boil holes on creeks - - where the bedrock had a rock get caught and it circled round and round until it made a perfectly round boil hole. Sometimes inside the boil hole was a perfectly round sphere of something hard like quartz.

    • @vaultdueller623
      @vaultdueller623 6 лет назад

      If we are speaking of same thing, I think those are from ice age back when ice mass were moving over the land and that is how those holes were born. So it makes sense when ice has been moving rocks and hard material eats softer rock and ends up being sphere inside the hole.

    Thank you for teaching what a bead mill is and how it works. I suppose, to make smaller beads, you would have another drum with a smaller channel?......how long from start to finish once the rocks are precut?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад +2

      Same drum for small beads, just more of them. The time it takes will depend on a number of factors, especially the hardness of the rock, how round they are at the start and how close in size they are. This run took me about 3 hours (2 with coarse grit and 1 with fine).

  • @kimmikulak6524
    @kimmikulak6524 5 лет назад

    That was great. I thought the machine was going to take off into outer space there at first till you added the weights. They turned out really pretty even though their in shapes of kidney beans. If drilled the long way will make for a beautiful necklace I can see adding Pearl's spaced out with them as a knotted piece. Necklace.

  • @kimmikulak6524
    @kimmikulak6524 5 лет назад

    ❤after watching your tube several times, those garnets really need perfectly drilled large holes which would make an awesome garnet (Knotted) bracelet and necklace with the leather or something on that order to show the gemstone beads off. Give them the recognition they deserve, be worn proudly...k🐶

  • @leighann9779
    @leighann9779 6 лет назад +1

    Thank you for sharing, always wonder how that process was done. Can you show how to drill the holes? They will make amazing beads.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад +3

      I will wait to drill until I have a press. I think my first attempt will be to stick the bead into hot wax in a half burned tea candle. Then fill it back up with water. That way the drill bit stays cool and won't break the rock. At least, that is the plan.

    I've just started the hobby, in my dotage at 61 years old, and so far I've only scanned some gravel piles, and roadsides. Picked up some "pretty rocks", but trying to learn what's what.

    I would think the varying difference is size would cause the smaller ones to come out less round. Its seems like its about the pressure from the top/bottom grinding them as they roll. Less or no pressure= less grinding. I could be wrong. With enough time, does it usually just grind down to the smallest size?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад

      Exactly. With the standard process, it will round the largest rocks first. There is also a process to get graduated sizes that I intend to play with.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад +1

      I am thinking about trying it. The two concerns are (1) silver is soft, but I think if I were careful that it would work out and (2) there will be quite a bit of waste when I cut and trim the cubes. I guess that would give me material to try refining.

  • @symonsheppard5519
    @symonsheppard5519 6 лет назад +4

    MeMiner, you are getting far too clever for your own good, but ironically you haven't lost your marbles despite what Daisy has told me.
    It's very clever and surprisingly quicker than I thought it would be, as you said the mixed hardness was a hinderance and spoiled the end product, shame about that but you did get a result and quite a good one.
    Interesting process but that roughing the cubes is probably the drawback to the process and a bit dodgy too, I wonder if on an industrial level they put the cubes in a bead maker to take the corners off before putting them in a proper bead maker to make them round.!
    Nice one Greig, good fun and I got my name mentioned.

    If it’s even possible they would pretty look at.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад

      I have thought about it. There would be lots of waste from the cutting, but I think the results would be nice. I will probably give it a go.

    • @scottdawson7805
      @scottdawson7805 6 лет назад

      Well those cuttings you will simply save and it just means a new skill you will need to learn to do some smelting and pour yourself and ounce or two of silver cuttings.
      Nothing is ever wasted that is simply a mind set you simply do something else with the cuttings.
      Or do a give away to people who support what you do.
      I do not have the time to go do what you do but I do find your adventures very interesting.

      This is just rock. It is banded iron formation. In this case, jasper and hematite.

    I have one of these and just tried using it on some turquoise I have. I took 30 pieces, made them comparable and as round as possible, put them in. Added some grit and water and when i turn it on the top just pops up and gets stuck and won't go back down without me physically pushing it back down. Also a lot of the mixture splashes out. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  5 лет назад

      Maybe different sizes? If you have one big one or broken little ones, it gets messed up. I had that happen when some of my rocks split

    • @Caerthose529
      @Caerthose529 5 лет назад

      @@meMiner The sizes are all really close to each other. I have had a couple break, but it's not even running for 4-5 seconds before this happens. There also seems to be very little online help for this product. You are the only other one with a video on it besides someone in australia who just showed the product without using it. Maybe i should test running actual marbles in it to see it work normal? How loose is the top supposed to be? I have to push the top down to even get it down to the level of the rocks inside, if i don't force it down then it just sits at wherever I leave it at.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  5 лет назад

      I agree that the support and manual are not really helpful. I have not run mine at all this summer. When I did have mine working, I had to play with the speed and amount of weight. It seemed to work best with more weight. It got jammed if one of the beads had a flat side and refused to roll - so I would take out that bead and round it more with the side of my saw blade. If the top is not down on the rocks, then nothing happens.
