  • This video follows our new house build in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Stay tuned as we post other videos following me and Izza managing the construction of our new modern house.
    The siding episode covers the entire process of preparing for exterior siding. We discuss how we chose these two siding materials and how two architects designed this house. We used metal siding from Ideal roofing as well as Maibec Wood siding in two colours - Algonquin Amber 052 and Mystery Black 319. We go over the sequencing of the entire install for all the cladding materials as well as the black metal soffits. A bit part of corrugated metal siding installation is the metal siding trims that need to be designed and installed - in this video you will see the entire process to do it yourself. This metal siding turned out awesome. thanks to ideal roofing. All these small wood siding installation details really made a difference in this home architecture design. It's in the small details like the metal siding trim that this place really stands out. Chris our metal siding installer did a great job at getting this cladding installed. We love it!

    Very helpful. Here in Southern California more people are turning to standing rib, interlocking metal siding for both walls and roof. Steel is better for fire protection. Underneath the steel siding your need code C or code X gypsum board. This is gypsum which is fiberglass reinforced so it does not fall apart when I is exposed to high heat. A building without eves on the roof is also better for fire resistance.

      Yea that's a huge problem over there.. having any sort of non combustible cladding would definitely help lower the spread.

    wow, that kayak storage pavilion you built looks freaking amazing!!!
    verandah soffit: would have looked nicer with wood trim (understandably costly) just to break the dark accents
    the house next door looks pretty badly outdated - well done
    Chris did a great install, although there are some cuts and fasteners on the trims that show
    All and all, just an amazing eye-catching house, well done mate!!!

    Hey guys nice design love the material combo as well. Building kind of similar roof/wall combo did Ideal was ok with wall strapping? And is your wall actually roof panels or siding? Thanks

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  3 года назад

      Hey, thanks dude! Yes, we discussed all the details with the reps from ideal and everything checked out.. they actually have a tech on board who will go over any custom detail and bend metal for you for special trims and stuff. The roof is the exact same material as the walls.. in reality, Ideal Roofing Heritage panel which we used is actually roofing metal, which we put on the walls; not the other way around.
      As long as you have good airflow and any water that gets behind there can trickle down/escape/evaporate you should be good!
      Good luck, thanks for watching.

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  2 года назад

      haha no eaves throughs.. it's a pain at the moment.. we need some installed but a lot of companies won't do it because it's not a straight forward installation compared to a traditional house. There is backing there so they should be able to install like anyone else.

      Take a look at some earlier videos on my channel and you can see the whole exterior of the house pre-siding. Cost break down was about 15k CAD ~ 11k USD in materials and 25k CAD ~ 18k USD in labor.

    How come you put your forence on the horizontal side ? how will your water drip if it get behind your siding ?

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  3 года назад

      Hey! It's because it has to be perpendicular to your siding. We did 2 things to address water. First off, Chris, the siding installer ran a bunch of 1/4" deep circular saw cuts on the back so that any water could go through those. Secondly, we gave them a small slope so they are not truly horizontal. We left crack in between pieces so water can travel down.

    Great video! How is your roof ventilated?

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  3 года назад

      I thought I had replied to this comment in the past.. Can't find the answer so I'll retype it. It's actually vented traditionally through the soffit.. it's just kind of an optical illusion and a cool architectural detail that makes it look like there is no soffit. The ribs on the side are about 2" high so that leaves a 2" space at the top that's the entire length of the house. We designed a custom trim piece which received the siding (the one at the transition from wall to roof) which we had perforated like soffit. Then we added baffles in the addict which brings air from those gaps. We have a ridge vent all along the house and the 2 end gable overhangs are fully vented so there is plenty of ventilation up there! Take a look at this video for the exact detail: ruclips.net/video/9Tu3I9DqapA/видео.html

  • @tomastoegel4973
    @tomastoegel4973 3 года назад +1

    Nice result but where is the air gap to ventilate the moiscure from interior in cold whather?

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  3 года назад +1

      That is done through an HRV. They are required by code now because houses are so air tight. They do multiple air exchanges of the entire house per hour.

    • @tomastoegel4973

      @@HugoBuilds t
      It depends on the climate where the house is plased. In my country this house would be after a year full of water fron moiscure condensation in the wall. We have aroun -5 over the winter and 25 over summer. I am sure Id stay here agaist court yard for this design sonner or later - strustee would fail. On the other hand, in tropical climate would probably work wirhout any problem.

    26 gauge is actually quite thin. It's like a bare minimum for normal alloys/tempers of steel. Some steel is easily twice that norm, and can go thinner while still looking good...but I've never touched any exterior metal cladding that's quite as thin as 26 gauge, let alone thinner, so I have no further opinion to offer about it.
    Oil canning has a lot to do with whether the metal coil was properly straightened before being rollformed into panels. I'll venture to bet that IdealRoofing (assuming they do their own rollforming?) properly straightens the coil before rollforming.
    It looks damn good. The product and workmanship are handsome. *...oh, it was installed by professionals. that makes sense...hahah...

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  3 года назад

      Thanks - seems you're in the UK here. 26 gauge is standard for metal roofing. Very often cheaper stuff is 28-29. You seem to know a lot about steel! Good comments. The installer did do a great job! Thanks for watching.

    Honestly probably your best video yet. Very well edited and lots of good information. Honestly I appreciate wanting the cedar look but I think a big part of why you like it is the rich wood colouring which takes an enormous amount of maintenance to hang onto for any length of time. Unless you stain/oil it every year or two it will grey, and with all the other greys on the home I don't think that would work well anymore. The Maibec will keep its colour a lot longer (I have some in a dark blue/grey I installed 10 years ago and it hasn't changed at all).
    Could you share a little more information about those custom metal details around penetrations and at corners? I've always seen wood siding terminating at another piece of wood (usually a 2x4 or 2x3 or something similar) which looks much more chunky and less modern. Did you design these pieces yourself? What do they look like?

    • @HugoBuilds
      @HugoBuilds  4 года назад +2

      Hey Ben! Always happy to receive your comments - thanks a lot for the positive feedback. You're right about the wood - although there is some maintenance with maibec it requires far less than real cedar.
      As for the maibec details those are custom bent out of black aluminum stock. The corner and window detail is very similar. It's just a doubles up thickness L angle. That gives it a bit of rigidity. Windows are 2"x2" L - corners are 1"x1". Maibec just butts straight into it and the cut will be caulked with a matching color. This avoids chunky details and expensive proprietary corner trims. It's also a lot cleaner. Once they are caulked I'll post some footage. Thanks again for watching :)

    • @chrisblais1029
      @chrisblais1029 4 года назад

      Both cedar and maibec needs maintenance. Maibec has been painted which takes the first step of the maintenance, however cedar has great perks which are bug resistant and even if they turn grey they can maintain their durability for years and years. Maibec is lodgepole pine which also requires maintence. If the siding is facing the sun will require more maintenance than siding that is not exposed.

      @@chrisblais1029 I agree wood siding is never maintenance free but my maibec siding hasn't faded noticeably in ~9 years and still looks like new whereas my cedar deck needs to be stripped and restrained every 2-3 years to maintain the colour. If you don't mind greying wood (it can look great too) then cedar is by far a better choice.
