  • The Asics Superblast is a long distance training shoe that blends elements of comfort and speed. It has a tall stack of Asics' FF Blast racing foam and is much lighter than other shoes with a similar amount of foam. In this video, I share my thoughts on the shoe after 100 miles.

I think a large part of the effect that makes people say the Superblasts are the greatest shoe ever and fit for any and all runs is that they are a super shoe without a plate. There is little to no concrete info on how training daily in plated shoes effects people short or long term but online shoe geeks are constantly saying how its bad to train or train daily and you even had a video on why you quit plated shoes. The Superblasts let's people train in a super shoe but with none of the concern or guilt or worries about what effect the plate has but most of the benefits.

    • @supwell
      @supwell  3 месяца назад +5

Great point - the "guilt free" thing is spot on. Lately I've been feeling if I want the effect of a shoe that makes it easier for me to run, I might as well run in a plated shoe. That's why I never bought the superblast when I quit plated shoes - it seemed like a weird loophole. My thinking is that if it rides like a plated shoe it will have the same effect on the body as a plated shoe. Also the rotation theory (rotating shoes reduces injury risks) suggests that we'd be better off doing our workouts and long runs in a plated racer and the rest of our runs in a non plated daily trainer than doing all of our weekly mileage in the superblast

    Ahh the Superblast :
I have almost 600km's on mine
I started out confused by the shoe as well- was NOT what I was expecting...
Once I hit about 30-50 K - it really broke in and got bouncy.
I use it for long runs in marathin training when im running bit below marathon pace.
The stack really is leg saving and helps with recovery.
It took me a while to learn how to engage the rocker in the right way, but once i did - it really rolled through my stride and my HR was lower then expected for a given pace.
Im running ( or at least attempting to run) 50 marathons by age 50 - which at my age is about a marathon a month ( only race 1-2 x year) and the Superblast have been key in helping me achieve my first 6.
Thanks for the greay content and honest reviews!

The ASICS Superblast is my favorite shoe for …. EVERY RUN ….
No seriously, the Superblast is the shoe I was looking for yet unable to find the past 3 years. Apart from the Nike Vaporfly Next % (1 & 2) I could not take ANY shoe over 15km without varying levels of discomfort - no matter my pace.
I tried (in no particular order) the
    1. New Balance More V4
    2. Nike Invincible 2
    3. Asics Novablast 2
    4. Asics Nimbus 25
    5. Saucony Speed 2
    6. Nike Zoomfly 5
    7. Hoka Mach 5
    8. Adidas Supernova Rise
The Superblast succeeded with flying colors where all these other shoes failed (longer runs).
Not only am I confident in lacing up the Superblast for my longer runs, but the Superblast is without a doubt the most versatile running shoe I’ve owned.
Recently I got the Adidas Supernova Rise (which I really like), but again, they don’t give me the support I need for 15km + runs.
To answer your original question: the Asics Superblast is my favorite shoe for those longer runs (15km ++) at any pace.
Ranking my top 3 shoes I’ve owned:
    1. Nike Vaporfly Next %
    2. Asics Superblast
    3. Nike Pegasus 36
(I am a heavier runner (90+kg) with a front-foot strike, long stride and low cadence - with very “sensitive” foot mechanics)

    • @jean-phil
      @jean-phil 3 месяца назад +4

hehe I own a few of these, long strides as well (1.50m) but I strike differently depending on the shoe (to optimize it) and I'm about 60kg. I guess it depends on your goals and tastes. Personally, I rarely run over 15km but yes the Superblast would be in my top 3 if I was planning a long run (over 15km). Back in the days, I really liked the ZoomFly 3 and I think it's still a great shoe after all these years, comparable to Superblast actually in terms of protection\stack, etc. Then I got Vaporfly and I was blown away by the speed\bounce. Then I got the Alphafly and Nike Tempo Next and I felt in love with the energy return of the air pods. But since then, I tried A LOT of shoes, including Mach 5, More V4, Speed 2, Novablast, Pegasus 36 and many many others. And while I quite like the More V4, Boston 12 and Prime X Strung to name a few, I think that, 4 years later, even after all these new shoes, none of them is significantly better for me than Alphafly and Tempo Next, these air pods are magic ;p

The Superbalst is my favorite shoe for…no one thing in particular. It’s an above average shoe, but it’s not the silver bullet so many people make it out to be. I do use it for some long runs where I inject some pace, but I don’t often reach for it feeling like, “I wanna run in the Superblast today.” However, if the Superblast 2 ends up having the FF Turbo+ from the Paris series, I might take another chance on it.

My first run wasn't great in these. They felt firmer than I expected. But my second run was at MP and this thing just cruises on long runs at MP efforts. For my footstrike, it's got the perfect balance of compliance and responsiveness under the ball of my foot. Feels like I'm gliding along with just the right amount of bounce.

  • @robsnow2099
    @robsnow2099 3 месяца назад +2

I skipped the Superblast, and I'm glad I did. The first couple months it got that "shoe of the year" talk.
Kofuzi really made that super popular with the Novablast 3. Since then, it seems like a race to name a shoe the "best".
The problem with that is, we lose the nuance of what makes the shoe great. And since no shoe is perfect, reviewers are reluctant to say what's actually wrong with the shoe. Every shoe has some cons.
I think version 2 will build off what was good about this shoe. And maybe it will finally be the shoe everyone thought it was this year... For more runners.

Ah!!! Finally!!! I had the same experience with the😢 novablast 4 and thought I was the only one in the entire world that thought the NB4 was firm and I didn’t like it. Actually commented my dislike and was told it was because of my stride😮. I know you

You're perfectly right. The NB4 is not for easy runs as advertised and I was pretty pissed off cause they were hailed as the "NB3 but better". I missed the bounce of the previous version during slow runs. The NB4 definitely has a place in my rotation but it does nothing that the NB3 doesn't excel in

Out of my made experience with the Novablast 4 ( ran 90 k in them so far ) it feels firmer than the Superblast or the Nimbus 25 but after a few miles into my run the firmes went almost completely away and near to the end it felt softer than at the beginning 😁🤔 I‘m waiting for the time that it will be feeling softer the whole time. I‘ll see how many miles I need to break them in completely 😁😍 One thing I want to point out at the Novablast 4 is the upper 🙌🫶🏻 That is pure magic. I rarely had a better upper than that. Stretchy and soft to the feet 😍

I really despised the Superblast because many reviewers hyped it up as a "do it all" shoe. Its amazing when I'm trying to hold a 6:00/mile pace, but is just awful while running slow. At 8:00/mile pace it's overkill, and on easy runs where my legs are dead it feels like I'm running on cardboard. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your honest review, cause most other reviewers just advertise the shoes.

Superblast is my favorite.. but its not a eureka moment. Its more of a balanced shoe. You actually can get too much of a good thing in other shoes. Stiff plates feel great. Maximum bounce feels great.. but the superblast is more honest. It has bounce, its pretty light, has botomless protection.. It also gradually forms to the shape of your foot and needs break in..
Its the best jack of all trades.

Completely agree with your take on the Superblast. On paper it is fairly versatile, but it wasn’t my go to for any specific kind of run. I found it far too stiff and form for easy and recovery runs and far too big and bulky for speed work. I did enjoy it for a couple of long runs with marathon efforts built in but I prefer to use retired marathon race shoes for that type of workout. Gave mine away after 200kms.

Superblast could be a good race shoe for a first time marathoner who just wants to finish the race and protect their legs. Otherwise it’s a very good yet overpriced daily trainer. For long run training even at Marathon pace there are cheaper options.

Caboose or no caboose, that is the question. Loved it on the Novablast 3. Didn't notice it on the Hoka Mach. But the heavy heel rub was a big downer. Can't beat the durability of Asics. Big fan of the Nova series. I used to run in them in rainy Shanghai and it was still okay along riverside paths with some paved stones, but it does get slippery on the harder flat exercise paths.

Pretty much the only shoe that lets rack up mileage injury free and I have tried many. It has a gentle firmness to and works great at different paces and distances. Of course not the best for intervals but you can do quick sessions with it. The best I find for long range tempo efforts. Have two pairs, different sizes. The snug fit pair I use for the faster efforts. There’s just something about these shoes that makes running very enjoyable for many, while being very protective as well.

As other’s have said, it’s a good shoe for long runs with some faster pace segments.
What I don’t like is it doesn’t feel very smooth. This might be because it’s not very flexible, similar to many ASICS shoes.

Thanks for the review! I ordered this before seeing your video and it arrives tomorrow but I could return. If you set aside price, and just wanted a good long run shoe for 15-22 mile distances once a week, protecting your legs and not giving the boost of a plate, is that a good use case or is there a better option? I have ES3 for intervals and will get ES4. I have Novablast 4 currently for l ong runs but like to move it to my “short” 8 miles easy runs since I’ve outlasted my second Mach 5 and Mach 6 has removed what I liked about it. I race in EP3 and will do EP4 or metaspeed sky Paris next. From this review, I didn’t quite catch what makes Superblast bad for a long run leg protector role. I also trusted Mach 5 as a travel shoe to do multiple run types and hope superblast could take that spot as an upside case.

thanks! sounds like it is exactly what you are looking for - it does a great job protecting the legs over long runs. i didn't love the ride feeling but my legs felt fresh after using it. so if your main goal is protection and some versatility for travel this is a great choice! also didn't mention here as i covered in a previous video but this is a surprisingly good shoe for walking and everyday activiies too

The Asics Superblast is my favorite shoe for NOTHING - and yet I have been the bulk of my mileage in it. Top end speedwork out on the track I rotate between the Takumi sen or streakfly, tempo days I've been loving the magic speed 2-but I grab the superblast more frequently, long runs I've been using my old race endorphin pro 3s, but I grab the superblast more frequently. Easy days have become superblast days as base mileage have become longer runs. I guess the only win for the superblast imo is that it's made it easy to keep coming back to more mileage day after day

Wanted to love my Superblasts but had to sell them after 40-50 miles. I thought these were really underwhelming. I couldn’t ever find a reason to wear them. My legs felt they had to work really hard.
Great quality and nice and stable. But the ride was stiff and frankly didn’t get any energy return. Don’t mind a high stack but couldn’t help but feel it was pointless here. Needs a plate. Fit/lockdown wasn’t brilliant either, and I tried them in half size down so it was the right size. feels very much like a first effort. I’m sure ASICS will nail it eventually.
Would always go towards an Endorphin Speed. faster and smoother.

I get why people like it but I didn't love the Superblast. I think the v2 with FF Turbo+ will be an improvement hopefully. The shoe is just too much of a combination of a big wide platform, firm foam, stiff midsole, and not much rocker. Something needs to give more for me personally in at least one category (more flex or foam compression or rocker or nimbleness). I think this is probably less of an issue for bigger runners and it probably makes a great marathon shoe for bigger runners, but at 5'7" and 127lbs even though I'm a 15 middle 5k guy and 1:12 half guy, I think I'm not putting enough force into it. I just don't love it at any pace. It's a big no for recovery paces because I feel like my quads get worn out, and it is much too wide/broad/unrockered/non-nimble for speed work for me. It really just shines at moderate like aerobic steady state paces, but even then it's just okay for me. The Speed 4 is better at overall versatility and at each pace range for me from recovery to easy to moderate to real speed work.

Underwhelmed with it. And I WANTED to love it. Impossible to achieve heel-lock, now at a tolerable half size down, still bad-ish heel lock with a runner's knot. Also, it bunches up my toes such that I feel them rubbing each other raw after 10 km or so. And they do not feel entirely neutral to me. The midsoleÄs medial forefoot is ever so slightly lower than the lateral forefoot, making me feel forced to pronate a bit. Many other neutral shoes and supershoes of various brands work fine and give me no such perception. Lacing is flimsy, cuts through and takes at least 2 gos to get right.
After 15 km my knees start hurting from constantly fighting their urge to pronate me and while high-stack, the main portion of FF Turbo Asics foam is so hard that I do not feel my bones and joints are fully protected and shielded from impact. But they do isolate me completely from ground feel. Even my lower Adios Pro 3 with their carbon and purportedly also rather firm Lightstrike Pro eat up the impact better.
Superblast hype has become an embarrassing case of fanboy mass hypnosis. and thread pirate marketing. It's an overpriced, mediocre shoe fit for no purpose in specific. No jack of all trades and certainly a master of none.

The Superblast doesn't need to be used for every run to be good value; it just needs to last for as long as it takes to rack up 400-500 miles. And there are deals; I was lucky to get mine for £105 in an Easter deal, but I've seen other discounts, as long as you don't want the latest colourway.

If it would be super soft, this shoe would be an instant buy for me... but I think its rather firm, yes I think its firm. And thats what I dont understand. I think my Boston12 is softer than the Superblast.
The Gel-Kayno 30 was also such a bad purchase by me... claimed to be a cushion monster, turned out to be a firm lifeless brick.
My hopes for this year lie in the SC Trainer V3.

I thought superblast was overrated first few runs but wow after awhile i don't know i need another shoe. And i have all the best to choose from. After dealing with a calf injury the last three years this is the shoe that seems to be getting me back into running healthy. I'm a muscular 100kg heavy runner and i think the somewhat firmer and large amount of quality cushion and lack of a plate couple be helping me in the injury regard. I go half size down and think you've stated your shoe is bigger than your usual size? I wonder if that's a reason for your underwhelming review of this amazing shoe. I've heard so many high reviews and so many state it as the shoe of the year. I don't think there's any doubt for many people this is one incredible shoe and playing with the midsole or anything else in the future could jeopardize it's place as the best shoe ever for me and others. That's why i have 3 superblast shoes to rotate through now. Also as many have said it gets better and better with mileage and that durability on top of everything actually make the cost that much more justifiable!

    1) I hurt my foot at work 2 weeks ago and the Superblast is the only shoe I have been able to run in with comfort. The combination of stiffness, protectiveness, and the accommodating toe box has allowed my to run with my swollen foot.
    2) Regarding your thoughts about the Superblast with a plate, it does have a ton of foam in the forefoot, as does the Novablast. For pure speed, the Mach 6 or Hyperion Max are definitely faster but less protective on a long run. You may feel it more because you are probably hitting the ground with more force.
    3) My lightweight trainers are great for doing 6-7 miles but they do not leave my legs feeling as fresh after 12-14 miles. On the flip side, I've stayed away from shoes like the Invincible and the 1080 because other soft shoes like the More v4 and the Nimbus make me feel like I'm working too hard on a long run. I also tried both of those shoes at work and the softness left my feet feeling tired.
    4) You seemed to have expectations of the Superblast that were not fulfilled that may explain why you are more salty about that shoe than the more expensive Cloudmonster Hyper. It's great that there are so many different types of shoes now so we can each find what works for us.

Also a must have long distance option if you race with Metaspeed.
