Very nice, thanks. I collect steam whistles and have illustrated company catalogs of most all manufactures. I have a large 3-bell chime made by the Lunkenheimer CO. It has bells ( cylinders ) 5 inch - 6 inch and 8 inches diameters. That is the largest combination offered by U.S. manufacturers. Many catalogs state that any size combination can be made to order. My Smith-Hyson catalog of the U.K. lists these sizes of "Triple Bell Super Whistle". Bells 6, 8 and 10 inches diameters, bells 6, 9 and 12 inches diameters, bells 8, 10 and 12 inches diameters, 9, 12 and 15 inches diameters. The largest set is colossal and very desirable. The size used on many of the huge, majestic British 4 stack ocean liners. The "Titanic", "Britannic", "Olympic", "Aquitania", "Mauritania", "Lady of Mann" as well as large French and other liners. I especially like large whistles and have several. I love the sound of the 12 inch diameter chimes. They are a single bell ( cylinder ) whistle with the bell cast with three separate compartments of different heights. The heights are tuned to the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the musical scale. When blown the notes blend to make a deep, powerful, pleasant chord. The 12 inch diameter was the largest offered of that type by most manufacturers. Used on large ships. Watch my You Tube posting to see "12 inch chime whistles". All 12inch chimes and my "Star Brass" is on there as well as many others.
Wow you have an impressive collection of valuable steam whistles! Especially your collection of the smith Hyson type. I agree too these large diameter bells like the 6, 8, 10 or even the largest 9, 12, 15 in diameter whistles make an impressive sound that is not often heard today, which is what makes them so rare and special. I will definitely check out more videos on the 12 inch whistles and I will continue the search for more whistles of this type to bring their voice to light.
Hi BungusYT, glad you like my reply. My only 3 bell chime whistle is the Lunkenheimer size # 3 with bells 5 inch, 6 inch and 8 inches diameters. That is a large combo and many were used on large ships and especially Mississippi river paddlewheel boats. Check the You Tube postings of the steamboat "Natchez". It has one of them and you can hear what they sound like. I have many old whistle catalogs, one being a U.K. Smith-Hyson. It shows all of their "Super Whistle" 3 bell chimes, four of them. The you tube postings of the St. Clair, MI. steam toots has a Lunkenheimer size # 3, like mine, blowing.
@@MaritimeNexus The largest of the Hyson whistles were super rare. Only a few ships ever received them, and most of the remaining ones sit at the bottom of the ocean. The whistles with the 9-12-15 inch chimes were the largest steam whistles ever produced. Anyone using the recordings from anything but Olympic, Mauretania or Aquitania's whistles as a stand-in for Titanic is completely wrong as far as I know. I'm told that the recording of Normadie's whistle is of a slightly smaller set, supposedly. I was told this from a collector who owns one of the medium sized or smaller ones.
3:23 is the NICEST 3-Bell Smith Hyson I've ever heard Besides Olympic's
6:33 is probably the only recording I’ve heard of a Smith Hyson with a ghostly sounding reverb.
Yeah @scheldon2244 you got a point there
The Str. NATCHEZ has a Lunkenheimer whistle built in Cincinnati, OH in the 1920’s.
