So well put together. I'm running my first NYC Marathon in less than two weeks and understanding how it came about and the life of the man behind it makes it so much more special. Thank you Fred Lebow for leaving such an incredible legacy!
Going to be watching this a lot in the next few weeks leading up to the NYCM! Fred was my cousin and I’ll be running the NYC marathon for the first time in 4 weeks. It’s going to be such a special day for me
I ran NYC Marathon in 2015. It was my first marathon ever. I started running at age 42. To this date, NYC has been by far the best marathon for me. Now I know who I owe for such a great experience. Thank you Fred Lebow.
This is the most beautiful story! I started running in 1963 and this brought back so many memories of those early days of running. Thank you for this wonderful documentary about an amazing man!
I dont know if Fred remembered me, but we definitely crossed paths many times in NYRRC races. I was there when the race went to all five boroughs. I remember NOT able to get into the NYC Marathon for some reason and I mailed a letter to him and said how can a GREEK not be allowed entry into the NYC Marathon. After all we gave the world the Olympics and the marathon and I was born the city state capital of Pyrgos where the Olympics were born. As a result of my letter, I got entry into the NYC Marathon and ran it some four times. Thank you Fred! I remember you buddy! I shall never, ever forget you!
Outstanding documentary. I ran my first Fred Lebow half earlier this year and now 50 days out from my first NYC marathon. Learning about Fred’s inspirational story makes these races even more special to participate in.
Did the NYC marathon in 1994 - just after Fred had died. Still go the t-shirt...! Highlights of the day - the AMAZING support of all the people through the Bronx, the nuns outside the convent with their brass band belting out Onward Christian Soldiers, not coming last (although that would have been something to put on my CV!) and the whole event being one huge and fantastic experience. One and only road marathon for me. Worth every step.
Salute to Fred Lebow!! Definitely an inspirational figure. He created a legacy, which is The NYC Marathon, that has gotten bigger each year as time goes on!! What an awesome documentary!!
This was totally amazing Rest In Peace Fred Lebowz. In honors of the brother I'm running 🏃 My 1st half marathon on my birthday 10/9/83 Salute To All My Runners WorldWide I Love You!! #IRUNMOOR5k
Very INSPIRING! This gives you a deeper appreciation of the vision Fred Lebow fathered. In 3 weeks, I will be running NYC for the first time. This is the motivation my inner soul needs. 🏃🏼🏃🏼🏃🏼
Really appreciated this documentary and learning about Fred Lebow, Grete W. and others. I didn't realize how huge his contribution was. All NYRR members should see this, especially if you've run the NYC Marathon.
Fantastic watch! Just about to run Brighton and then London marathons and the story of Fred has given just the boost I needed before the first race!! Thanks Fred🤘
The famous Comrades Ultra Marathon is coming up in 2 days and I was looking for something inspirational to watch and came across this. So glad I did, that was awesome! Long live Fred!
I had no idea what to expect watching this video. I didn't even realize that it was about Central Park in NY. I LOVE Central Park. I created a half and full marathon and women's run walk mini skirts, and there is a park in Clearwater Florida that reminds me of Central Park. What a beautiful inspiring movie here. I am so excited to watch all of these ideas come together.
Hi wonderful . See like I always say (not that what I say is a fact but it makes you think) when you have passion for something you love it unconditionally . No matter what it is it could be a person or something you set your goal on. Running was Fred's passion his soulmate , and he truly believed and loved this sport unconditionally.
My claim to fame.....I was volunteering at the NYRRC in the summer of 1980, when they were still in the West Side YMCA. One night, it got late and I didn't feel like taking the subway/bus back to NJ. So, I slept on a cot in Fred's office. I woke up in the middle of the night--covered in roaches. Never did that again!
damn i wish i couldve seen the 1989 nyc marathon, because 1989 is the greatest year in history and march 31st 1989 is the greatest day in history. if i had a time machine id definitely travel to march 31st, 1989.
Xiang Fan I have been running since 1986, I am 52 now, my body feels it believe me, it's great for your heart, but other body parts? enjoy the rest of your years on the road sir, take care
Keep at it mate I lost about 26 kg around 10 years ago I started running around the same time Im 53 now and started with small distances finally lost my weight and have run many trails and many 1/2 and full marathons A few injuries over the years but still running and still loving it Your post was 2years ago hopefully you are still going Im hoping one day to run the NYC marathon I registered 2 years ago but then 4 months later boke my ankle and tore ligament in my knee so missed it
1:44 Fred Lebow was not a "Romanian born business man" was born in a Hungarian-Jewish family in Arad, (which city belonged to Romania after WWI ). He was not Romanian, he was Hungarian. And it was a big joy for him that using his idea Budapest Marathon relocated its start in 1993 to Heroes Square, a unique historical square nearby the City Park in Budapest. He also run on this event (not a full, but a half marathon) He gave practical advices to the organisers of Budapest Marathon during his visit. (And they were talking to each other in Hungarian of course). It happened 1,5 year before his early death.
New York was designed from the block design in Edinburgh,Scotland ,yes we win,the first shot of the cobbled road looked like Edinburgh, and the patchy tarmac
Honestly, we could have left the holocaust and the womanizing on the cut room floor. It wasn't necessary. Lebow and the NYC Marathon it was really important.
I used to admire Fred Lebow . Not anymore after this movie. Can’t believe what he told Ann Roberts, about go in front of me, so the other girls would not think we were together. Ann was 20 years younger. I see extremely disrespectful to a young lady. She is A gorgeous woman when the movie was made. Imagine 30 plus years ago & he was 20 years older & not good looking At all. But I Should see the movie about what he has done for running & Not about he chasing the young girls.
Where does the government get the nerve closing off roads for these frivolous events? There are people (people who actually pay the money that build and maintain these same arteries) who actually need the use of these roads for their business and other legit purposes. What kind of bull shit is this where a bunch of people who want to run around wield their influence to get the politicians to interfere with commerce and close these public roadways? State and national parks, municipal and county gardens, wilderness areas and reserves make up 28% of America’s land. That is over one fourth of our country available to these idle people to utilize for their marathon needs. Why in hell must they hamper and disrupt commerce? And, on top of that the taxpayers must pay the cops and emergency personnel who line the route. They are either selfish or ignorant. It’s hubris, pure and simple. Really, there is no need for them to jog in urban areas; it’s imperious and high-handed.
Many of these events raise hundreds of thousands - sometimes millions of dollars for charity. And they work to lower the rate of obesity in America. Runners, family, and friends also fly from all over the country to these events and stay at hotels and go to local restaurants. I'd say these are worth a couple days of traffic detours a year.
So well put together. I'm running my first NYC Marathon in less than two weeks and understanding how it came about and the life of the man behind it makes it so much more special. Thank you Fred Lebow for leaving such an incredible legacy!
Good luck!!
He was a Romanian born in Arad in 1932, died very young at 62 years old, RIP.
