  • Every runner with a stress fracture wants to know “when can I run?”
How soon you can start running after a foot fracture really depends on when you have enough strength in the bone so that the healing fracture will withstand the forces applied during running without breaking the bone again.
It all depends on what you do to speed up (or slow down) the bone healing process. The rate of fracture healing depends on your physiology, and it depends on stages of bone healing.
But it does NOT depend entirely on generic timelines.
How long is each stage of fracture healing when you have a broken bone?
Well, that’s what we’re talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.

Thanks for this. I fractured my foot 2 months ago and it's still feeling iffy despite the green light from my doctor to start exercising. The most frustrating thing about recovery is that everyone is going to be different so there's not likely to be a catch-all plan. Just gotta listen to your body and play it smart

Thank you so much for explaining in so much detail. I'm not a runner, but I do Taekwondo and we do a lot of running and jumping drills. I have 4 non-displaced fractures on my left foot after a hard fall at Taekwondo class 3 weeks ago (1st through 4th metatarsals, but the 3rd metatarsal is a comminuted fracture and the only one that showed up in the x-ray. The other fractures only showed in the MRI). Findings of my MRI says all of the fractures are non-displaced, all soft tissues are intact and all bones are in good alignment. My question is, if there is no visible gaps in between the bones, will the callus still be visible in the x-ray? How will the callus show for non-displaced fractures on imaging? Thank you so much for creating this channel and for sharing your expertise to the world.

Thanks so much for watching and for you generous comments. The length of the recovery time it will take to get back to activity after metatarsal fractures will depend on when the injury happened, how bad it is, what you do now to let it heal and what you do to maintain your taekwondo specific strength and fitness while the fractures heal.
What you should do is make sure you are not missing opportunities to make that happen right now!
If you want more detail specific to your exact situation related to what you see on the X-rays or MRI, and discuss with me personally, we could get on a webcam call or phone call today or tomorrow to help you figure out what you should be doing NOW to make sure you don't keep losing all of your fitness. it is the video for me now! I am having a tibial stress fracture recently. I got the x-ray and turns out it is stress fracture. I was told that I could not run now and have to use support boots for 3 weeks and return for another x-ray again.
I am wondering can I make an apppintment with you about my injury. cause I checked another video from u about the healing process "rebuilding bone" is more important than breaking the bone.

Had tasral-metatarsal joint fusion 9 weeks ago. I was given the green light to walk with boot 6 weeks after surgery and have been strength training with a boot since then. Switched to medical shoe last week.
Haven't felt any additional pain so hoping that everything I've done is all good.

Does the ultrasound treatment help the healing process? or any equipment can be used for speeding up the healing process.
My case is not because of any jump or any high intensity. it is because the vitamine D deficiency causes the tibial stress fracture.
