Definitely recommend watching this series with the subtitles on not just because of their accents but also because it actually types out the Pidgin and the Yoruba that they speak.
Not sure if there's an issue with my TV, but the subtitles would disappear about five minutes into each episode. The audio mixing didn't help with comprehension, either.
I have to concur. I watched this the first time without subtitles and was very confused by the conversations between characters. The second watch with subtitles enabled made all the pidgin english and Yoruba plain and clear and suddenly the whole dialect of the movie made sense. It was much more enjoyable when able to follow along the conversations.
I am used to my disney introductions to other cultures in film form. I thoroughly enjoyed Moana and learning about Pacific Islander culture, and Encanto to take a journey to South America. This was different but just as enjoyable. Some of the accents were heavy on my aging ears and I found myself struggling to understand dialog sometimes, but now I think the inclusion of pigeon-english may have been a factor in tricking my ears. I am going to give this a re-watch with subtitles enabled. It was an entertaining story, the graphics were cool, the characters relatable. Only 6 episodes left me wanting more! I would say the creative forces behind this lived up to the disney standards and this series fits in well with the disney collection.
try watching with subtitles. i'm young with sharp sensitive ears but I have audio processing issues. dialects and accents are difficult for me so i always use subtitles to add context
@@MellowJelly Subtitles made this an entirely different experience. I found that the dialog is a mix of Pidgeon english and a native Nigerian language. It was much easier to follow the dialog with the mixed speaking printed out.
So happy to see this perspective! The hate towards non-white disney stories gets so exhausting. I remember when encanto was announced and i couldnt believe it.. COLOMBIA!!!!! I watched it with my abuelita and it was so much fun. I actually got to learn more about my own culture thanks to that lol (no sabo kid here)
