I was 16 years old when this came out. I was a mess. I had alcoholic parents, my sister was married and moved away, I was alone and totally wanting to be loved and to love someone. This song is amazing. Tonight, I took my wife out to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary. I found my Amanda.

Boston is an American rock band who had their biggest success in the 70's-80's. They had a lot of great songs such as "More Than A Feeling", "Peace Of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time", "Rock & Roll Band", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Feelin' Satisfied", "We're Ready", "Amanda" etc.

'A Man I'll Never Be" is even deeper than this song, "Foreplay/Long Time" is astounding in musicality and will rock you to the core. One man -Tom Scholz wrote and recorded the songs and guitar, keyboards etc. by himself before bringing in the singer and drummer. A true genius!

Asia & BJ, their masterpiece is "Foreplay/Long Time". It is for them like Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" or Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven". It's a long, complex really powerful song that will make your jaws drop, I guarantee it. It's really popular and still played constantly on rock stations today.

But if you listen to it ignoring all of that, it's just really a great song.

Good point. Looking back, a lot of us, (I know I did), mistook the band's unique sound for just the sound of that era. I guess you have to be pretty iconic for people to make that mistake. But yeah, I remember this album feeling out of sync with what was going on at that time, so it did feel 'old,' like they weren't growing or something. But had I listened to it more like a Rolling Stones album, (which I never minded when it sounded like a Rolling Stones album), then I suspect this would have seemed less like clinging to past success, and more like another album by a band with an iconic rock sound.

This is my favorite Boston song and I first heard it in 1986, the year it was released. I was a teenager then and the song stuck in my memory forever because that was the best teenage year of my life. In 2009, when my youngest daughter was born, I named her after the song to remind myself of the beautiful memories of my favorite teenage year. First of all the songs lyrics will make such great sense to you and everyone needs to hear it. Truly. Secondly… As you’ve heard the vocals are always top notch but this song really shows his range. Lastly… If you want to hear some outstanding guitar work this song despise Boston’s guitar work as well. Of course they demonstrate that an older songs but this song puts it together collectively. It’s a great song. It was super popular. I promise you’ll love it

If I remember correctly the lead guitarist, Tom, was an MIT graduate. He revolutionized guitar sound effects and his “Rockman” effects box was a must have back int the day.

I am very happy to hear this. Reaction channels don't usually react to anything from Third Stage. There's some brilliant music on this album. Boston is one of my all-time my favorite rock bands.

A very popular song in the 80’s and playing it in the jukebox. Hahaha. Old songs soothe my mind, until now I still know the lyrics. Haha

While Marianne in More Than a Feeling is based on a real person. Cousin of the writer/guitarist Tom Sholz whom he had a little crush on back in the day, AMANDA is not a real person, it was the first name that came to mind when they were needing one to fit the song lyrically and rhythmically. Other three-syllable female first names could work, but they found a winner first try and didn't even try others.
Your first two Boston reactions are written ten years apart. There are seven other songs on their first album to react to, and a handful from their second.

Boston is a band that can pull off the "Soft-Rock" love ballads with class and style. If you want to check out a different band that can pull that off too, try Marillion doing "Dry Land" live in Holland 2011. They're more prog, but the two songs could go on a romantic playlist really well. I enjoy the chemistry between you two!

"Boston" is not a soft-Rock band. They're a hard-Rock band that had the versatility to record a few very good slower ballads. Songs that are more characteristic of their style are: "Foreplay/Long Time", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", and "Cool the Engines".

Tom Sholz is an amazing songwriter, musician and producer, the whole project is his vision, he fought with his record company on every release because he would take years to perfect each song and album, bunch of lawsuits ensued, it was ridiculous, but at the end of the day his sound & vision was 100% perfect.

Dude (Tom Scholz) spent years in his basement writing, producing (playing lead/rhythm guitar, bass, keyboards and some drums) and recording their first album. It was mostly a one-man deal. No pedals or filters existed to get the sound he had in his head so like the genius Hendricks before him, he invented them. You should check out Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great", episodes #17 & #71. Where he really breaks down the brilliance of Mr. Scholz. Who, BTW, is a MIT educated engineer.

Third Stage came out due to lawsuits between Boston and their record label. Boston's first 2 albums were huge. They finally released Third Stage to fulfill their contract agreement for 3 albums, several years later. Check out, "A man I'll never be." Grab a tissue....
