The best thing about this, guys (aside from Brad Delp's vocal prowess), is that no synthesizers were used on this. All the sound effects you hear were created using organ, guitar, amplifier, and experimental recording techniques. And this was 1976!
Jubal238 you forgot to mention the clavinet. You can hear the clavinet on Foreplay. What specific "experimental recording techniques" did Tom use to record this record ?? Not a lot of people know this but producer John Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to teach him proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments. This was necessary because the drum tracks that Tom recorded were so poorly done that they were not suitable to be put on the record. Boylan describe the drum tracks that recorded as "amateurish". At Boylan's directive Tom had to re-record all of the drum tracks. As for all effects that you hear, Tom did not invent or design the plate reverbs that can plainly be heard on this record
Get this: Tom Sholz, the genius behind this, recorded most of this in the basement of his house in Watertown, MA. The guitar parts, the bass, the keyboards. All him. Early 70s...in his spare time (he had a day job). He invented the effects that give the guitars that unique sound. Absolute genius.
I’ve always heard that Brad Delp committed suicide and it had something to do with Tom. Didn’t sound like Tom was a good guy. If anyone knows the true story I’d like to know.
Tom Scholz has a PhD in electrical engineering from MIT. This entire album was recorded and produced in his home basement studio using equipment that he designed and built. How fkng cool is that?!?! I always loved this one because of the metaphor of unhurried foreplay leading up to the main event. 😂 This is an eargasm! 😂
Tom Scholz has a masters in mechanical engineering from MIT. The entire record was not recorded in Toms home studio, and the record was most certainly not produced or mixed in/at/on Toms home studio. There is no way on earth that Toms 12 track Sculley tape machines and his Dan Flickinger mixer and what little outboard gear Tom had at the time could handle the production and mixing duties for this record. All of Brads vocals sans the vocals for Let Me Take You Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studio C in CA. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded at The Record Plant LA by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Once complete the record was mixed at one of the studios at Westlake on an API console. The lead solo on Long Time and all of the electric rhythm guitars on both Long Time and Foreplay are Barry Goudreau. Fran Sheehan played base on Foreplay as well. If you want to learn more of the real story after hearing tracks that Tom wanted to submit for the record, John Boylan sai that the acoustic instruments were recorded so poorly (Boylan described them as amateurish) that Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms home studio to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments such as drums, acoustic guitars and pianos. At Boylan's directive, Tom rerecorded the acoustic instruments with Sib playing the drums on all songs but one. Tom has not been completely honest and transparent regarding who did what and how this record actually came to be. Producer John Boylan gives a far more accurate and objective account of how this record came to be and who did what on it. Barry actually introduced Brad to Tom years before this record was ever made. Barry and Tom played the songs that would eventually be polished up and put on the debut album in a band called Mothers Milk years before this record was actually made.
@@neechee5150, everything I said has been well documented and independently verified many times over the years. And Tom’s degree is a PhD in electrical engineering. He holds several patents for devices he invented in order to explore and capture the sounds he was looking for.

Tom did not mix this record in his basement. Nor did Tom play all of the instruments on every song. Tom was introduced to Brad by Barry back in 1969. The Boston debut record was mixed at Westlake Studios in CA on an API console with Tom, producer John Boylan and Warren Dewey doing the mixing, There is no way on earth that Tom would be able to mix and "produce" this record on his Dan Flickinger mixer, his Sculley 12 track 1 inch tape machines and such a paucity of outboard gear such as noise gates, compressors, parametric eq and plate reverb units. Barry plays all electric rhythm guitars on Foreplay and Long Time and Barry plays the lead guitar solo on Long time. Fran Sheehan is playing the bass on Foreplay. Let Me Take You Home Tonight was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Sib plays all drum tracks except for Rock and Roll Band which was played by Jim Masdea. What specifically makes the Boston debut record "very complex recording"?
You should see them live. Totally incredible. This album is from 1976, and Boston is one of the most talented band that have ever graced the music Industry.
I saw them live they backed up Blue Oyster Cult…. They were amazing!!! A few year’s ago saw Barry Goudreau who was one of the guitarist and they perform this song .. sounded really good!👍🏻
Their debut album 'Boston', which included this masterpiece, has got to be one of the biggest debut albums of all time. Ground breaking...utterly fantastic!!
My 1st concert in 1978 at WSU. Boston went full throttle for 3 hours. We couldn't sleep afterward and they were so incredible!! ❤ RIP BRADLEY, lead singer.
Boston songs bring me back to the summer of 77 in Detroit you could not escape it. There songs were everywhere. I didn’t appreciate it at the time but I sure wish there was music out today that was even half this good.
Boston is the BEST concert I’ve ever seen! Absolutely masters of music. “Holly Ann” is amazing!! Tom Scholz, an engineering graduate from MIT played all the guitar parts in his basement studio.
When this was new and I heard it on the radio for the first time, I was a puddle of goo! It was so good and so cool, that I went out and bought it. Just like everybody else. This band changed rock and roll forever!
One of the most perfect intros ever recorded--Classical, to Space Rock, to that soaring guitar. I should add--these guys were students at MIT. Most of the equipment that produced this flawless sound--they built themselves.
tom produced engineered and wrote this entire record.played guitar and bass and arranged all vocals and clipped the drum tapes to fit the songs.took 7 years....genius level recording in a homemade basement studio...
Damn! My childhood now gonna be played. These guys are so amazing. This song is so amazing. Boston, and Van Halen came out the same time snd changed music forever. Made me a geetar playa. Thx for reacting.
Absolutely loved watching you both catch the vibe and essence of this 70's masterpiece offering from the legendary BOSTON! I felt like we were all teleported back to a 70's house party where everyone was dancing and just having a great time! Great Reactions is what we've come to expect from you because that's what you always deliver!
I remember putting this on a turntable when it first came out and just sitting in my room listening to it unfold, and it felt like it had the potential in instantly become anything. What a thrill ride of a composition. There would be no way a first time listener could predict the shape of most of this song, which is my favourite thing about it. That setup sets up the impact of all that follows. Boston, Foreigner and Journey were all similar in their abilities in that regard.
It should be written, Foreplay/Long Time. It's much like Queen's We Will Rock You, always followed by We Are the Champions. We loved this song at the disco! Everyone would be chilling in their seats during Foreplay, just waiting for that music ramp up. Then everyone would hit the floor at the same time, hands over your head clapping along. When you clapped, BJ, so did we on the dance floor. Another favorite Boston song, for me, is Rock and Roll Band.
You guys pretty much need to listen to and react to the WHOLE ENTIRE "BOSTON" album!!! EVERY single song on the first album is PHENOMENAL and AMAZING!! You guys will LOVE IT!!
"Something About You" and "Rock and Roll Band" are classics from the same album. There's also "Don't Look Back" "It's Easy" "Party" and "Feelin' Satisfied" from their second album.
Man that's a classic and it's awesome to see both of you reacting and the impression it left no need to know the lingo I know what you mean thank you for sharing that was awesome
I was fortunate enough to see Boston on THIS tour in 1979. I had just joined the Army and I saw them on the SAME stage with Van Halen. It was June of 1979 and they were BOTH at the very top of the music biz in 1979. Raleigh, N.C.
Many people don't realize there was no guitar that sounded like this before Boston. It was invented by Tom Sholtz. The Boston Sound was a huge invention in Rock and Roll!
Tom Sholtz was an M.I.T. Electrical Engineer and a Genius! Every note you hear he it together himself in his basement. He went and got Brad Delp for the vocals. This whole album was created by Tom. They had to hire a band when this album hit. So they could Tour.
Not everything. Drums were done by others and some of the guitar was done by different guitarists. But he did most of it. Which is pretty impressive as his guitar playing is pretty virtuosic and his organ playing is also next level. And he then did bass on top of everything else.
Tom has a masters degree from MIT in Mechanical Engineering. Tom did not write all of the songs on this record. Let Me Take You Home was written by Brad. Brad also co wrote Smokin'. Brad and Jim Masdea are credited for the arrangements of these songs in the liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster of this record. All of Brads vocals were recorded by Producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. Boylan used some high end mics, mic pres, eq and plate reverbs and that is why Brads vocals sound better on the debut record than all of the other Boston records. Barry introduced Tom to Brad back in 1969. Tom met Barry when Tom auditioned to be a keyboard player in Barry's band years before this record was ever made. Tom, Barry and Brad played in bands together years before this record was made. Let Me Take You Home was recorded in an LA studio and the people on the back record cover came up with and played all of their respective parts on that song.
Foreplay is the rocket struggling to launch and escape earths atmosphere ,Long Time is the main engine firing to get ready to leave the solar system to go to the stars . At least that how my teenage brain felt about the song, It was also great for air guitar😉
My most favorite parts of the song was the Acustic riffs and then towards the end the riff was played with an Electric guitar. Just such great musical talent. It didn't hurt the the lead guitarist was an MIT grad. You should check out his interview about forming Boston. It's very entertaining and insightful.
Lance Owens said, "[Boston debut record] Over produced but impeccable and timeless". What specifically about the Boston debut record is over produced as you claim?? The production on Dont Look Back is not at the same level as the Boston Debut record.
It actually was supposed to be 2 songs, but so many people requested both, they were played together. Songs were longer back then but this is crazy long, but worth every minute.😁
At the timje, that was the fastest selling debut album in history. I got stationed at March AFB in SoCal in 1975 and got to go to their debut tour in '76 at The Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino. I've been to MANY concerts, but this one was just awesome. Starcastle and The Outlaws (Green Grass and High Tides) opened.
@@mespencer53 I had a buddy I was in boot with that got stationed at Norton. We both had motorcycles and used to ride to the beach on the weekend. The Swing did have some excellent shows!
“Foreplay/Long Time” is definitely two songs combined to make one. “Foreplay” is the instrumental at the beginning, primarily featuring the organ. Other examples of songs with slashes like this would be “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen” by Santana, “Eruption/You Really Got Me”, by Van Halen, “Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid” by Led Zeppelin, and “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions” by Queen.
The vocals are all done by one guy - Brad Delp. He does the leads, plus the harmonies. At least on this album. They brought in other singers on later albums but he did pretty much everything here. And Tom Sholz wrote most of the songs, did about 95% of the guitars, all of the bass, and all of the organ. Plus designed sound pedals that did all those special effects you hear on the record. And he did it out of his basement. Probably the best example of DIY in rock. Not a huge fan of their entire catalog.but the first album has to be ranked as one of the best debuts on rock.
@johnr8095 Fran Sheehan plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home not Tom. The only "pedal" that Tom used on this record was the so called 'hyperspace pedal" which is based off of a Echo Plex tape loop echo machine that Tom modified to be controlled with a pedal. Heart and soul of the guitar sound on this record is a Marshall tube amp driven so hard that the power tubes are compressing and clipping naturally and some major eq work to really boost the mids and to roll off the lows. Tom was able to run his Marshall's hard without blowing out his hears or making his neighbors mad at him because he was using a large variable resistor from a theater lighting system to soak up the power coming off of the tube amp before the amplified signal hit the speakers in the Marshall cab. Tom did not start to use devices that would evolve into what became the Rockman until the second record. The core of the guitar sound on this record is all Marshall tube amp and some major eq work
Boston was my first concert, I counted 19 people on the stage, the front guys were great, but it took a lot of people to pull off this sound. I met the drummer many years later, this was an amazing album the guy that played all the instruments was amazing, and Brad Delp was as good in person as he sounded on the album. They had a monster bong on stage, and smoke barreled out of it, and Brad ran out into the crowd a lot, it was an amazing concert.
What you may not know that Tom Scholz Wrote & Performed ALL accompaniment Instruments & Vocals in this song being it was his first to produce. Organ, Key Boards, Drums, Guitar, Bass, Lead & back up vocals was all performed by Tom Scholz on a multi-track recorder. The song hit 1# on BillBoard. Tom had to scamble to assemble a band together to complete an Album then start a Tour. AMAZING TALENT.
Maj Kenneth Withrow what a bunch of BS. Tom did not sing a note on this record. All vocals were sung by the one and only Brad Delp, and his vocals were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C in CA with John Boylan producing. All drum tracks except one were played by Sib. The bass guitar track on Foreplay was played by Fran Sheehan. The searing lead guitar solo on Long Time was played by Barry Goudreau. Barry also plays all electric rhythm guitar parts on Long Time and Foreplay as well. Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home Tonight and he co-wrote Smokin. Brad and Jim Masdea are given credit for arranging the songs on this record as well. Barry introduced Brad to Tom years (1969) before this record was ever recorded. Tom joined Barry's band as a keyboard player years before this record was ever recorded. Tom, Barry and Brad played the songs what would eventually be polished for this record years prior to this record coming out in a band called Mothers Milk.

@@CuttinEJ do yourself a favor and read the John Boylan interview in Mix Magazine and read the liner notes in the 2006 Scholz remaster of the 1976 Boston debut record. Scholz had to tell the truth on the 2006 remaster liner notes because of litigation.
@@CuttinEJ Tom is on the record in his interview with the National Academy of Engineering. He only has a Masters and that Masters is in mechanical engineering
@@neechee5150, Dude, you can believe what you want, but everything you wrote is fiction.
This song was played at my high school graduation, as we marched out of the gym.(1977)🥰💖
One of my all time faves from the amazing Boston. It’s mind blowing in the intro and throughout. U to guys’ interpretation was an epiphany spot on!
This is such an amazing band I mean we’re so blessed to have beautiful music like this in our lives. This is 1000% audio forplay!
They are the absolute kings of straight ahead rock and roll! This is the greatest rock debut album of all time; maybe the greatest debut album of any genre ever. Every song on this album is absolutely fire; not a dog in the bunch. That being said, this is their masterpiece! React to some other Boston; particularly from this album. Everybody loves them! And it's particularly gratifying to see Asia rockin' out to this!
Foreplay: DRUMMER IS MVP!
I grew up on Boston. Not a bad song out there. Amazing vocals (range) and incredible instrumentation!
This is when music was music. You can understand all the words and it's not overpowered by the music.
I love the Boston sound. Filled me with energy. As a matter of fact I got TWO speeding tickets while listening to Smokin' many years ago!
One man did all instruments and mixed in his basement. He had a friend do the vocals. Very complex recording. Glad you enjoyed. 😊
well - Tom didnt do the drums - that was another guy
@@jonniiinferno9098 That's good info to know. Thanks for pointing that out Jonni. We can only share what we've been told. Now we all know more. Take care.
@@benjamineferko1657 aye - roger that !!
It's second guns n roses took their spot over 20 years ago for best selling debut album
One of the greatest debut albums of any band. Right up there with Van Halen and Led Zeppelin 1.
#1 debut album of all time, Brad Delp's vocals are second to none, R.I.P.
My favorite Boston song, and one of the greatest chorus/post-chorus sections ever.
Have seen them in concert twice and they were absolutely amazing!
One of the greatest bands…… EVER!! RIP Brad Delp.
I love Asia's laugh, she has the best laugh.
and smile - beautiful smile
@@jonniiinferno9098 Very true.
Eyes!
I remember the summer this came out. EVERYBODY had this album and played it. What a golden time.
One of the greatest pieces of music ever made.
I just love how Asia can get into the groove of the song! she rocks!!!!
Yes, even if your music you create does not hit the market but if you get her into groove, your music is officially fantastic. She has it in her.
Yes!!😊
When this was new and I heard it on the radio for the first time, I was a puddle of goo! It was so good and so cool, that I went out and bought it. Just like everybody else. This band changed rock and roll forever!
One of the most perfect intros ever recorded--Classical, to Space Rock, to that soaring guitar. I should add--these guys were students at MIT. Most of the equipment that produced this flawless sound--they built themselves.
Forplay is the set up in the beginning...its epic...then LONG TIME! Great reaction as usual!
tom produced engineered and wrote this entire record.played guitar and bass and arranged all vocals and clipped the drum tapes to fit the songs.took 7 years....genius level recording in a homemade basement studio...
All songs on this debut album are fire!!!!!
Eighties kid talking...Literally have heard it millions of times...Never ever tire of it..!! ROCK ON...
Now this is something special....! The entire album...!
You guys will LOVE IT!!
and you are Not Lying Bro' !!! - they gotta do smokin, rock-n-roll band and hitch a ride...
"Something About You" and "Rock and Roll Band" are classics from the same album. There's also "Don't Look Back" "It's Easy" "Party" and "Feelin' Satisfied" from their second album.
Also check out ( ELO - Living Thing - Turn to Stone - Telephone Line - Sweet Talking Woman - Strange Magic )
Man that's a classic and it's awesome to see both of you reacting and the impression it left no need to know the lingo I know what you mean thank you for sharing that was awesome
This album was recorded in a dinky basement in Boston using home made guitar effects, one of the original DIY albums...
Another Classic! The voice incredibly flawless!!
This was my go to band that gave me my rock-'n'-roll soul!!!!
Boston will kick your azzzz!!!!
super talent...Boston still rocks my world...I was 16 and now I am 60...STILL ROCKS!!! Banger
Take a road trip while listening to this album:)))))))))))))))))))))))))))
R.I.P. Brad Delp. Will never be forgotten
I was fortunate enough to see Boston on THIS tour in 1979. I had just joined the Army and I saw them on the SAME stage with Van Halen. It was June of 1979 and they were BOTH at the very top of the music biz in 1979. Raleigh, N.C.
Ahhh yes... Another classic from my teen years. This takes me back!! I'm 60.
Correction: Tom is a mechanical engineer. 😉
@@neechee5150 Brad wrote the lyrics, but Tom wrote the music.
@@scottlaughlin9897 to which specific song(s) and what is your source?
All of the music was put together by a guy in his basement! Then Brad Delf did the singing with some "adjustments." Was marvelous.
Foreplay is the rocket struggling to launch and escape earths atmosphere ,Long Time is the main engine firing to get ready to leave the solar system to go to the stars . At least that how
my teenage brain felt about the song, It was also great for air guitar😉
Love this description!! You have a great imagination ♥️
It's so fun to watch ya'll hear a new song! Great song and reaction!
My most favorite parts of the song was the Acustic riffs and then towards the end the riff was played with an Electric guitar. Just such great musical talent. It didn't hurt the the lead guitarist was an MIT grad. You should check out his interview about forming Boston. It's very entertaining and insightful.
Best two albums!!!! Over produced but impeccable and timeless. You can play these back to back for years !!! Never gets old.
Lance Owens said, "[Boston debut record] Over produced but impeccable and timeless".
What specifically about the Boston debut record is over produced as you claim?? The production on Dont Look Back is not at the same level as the Boston Debut record.
My early teen years when, first becoming a rocker. Late but eventually expanding to all styles & artists. Thanx for the memories.
If you look, the album cover is giant guitar spaceships.
Great dance song from my high school days. Everyone would clap during the clapping part with our hands in the air! Good times!
It actually was supposed to be 2 songs, but so many people requested both, they were played together. Songs were longer back then but this is crazy long, but worth every minute.😁
One of the best. The beginning was just to set the mood. The song is definitely a journey.
The whole album is great!
I was Stationed at NOrton AFB at that time. The Swing had some great shows.
@@mespencer53 I had a buddy I was in boot with that got stationed at Norton. We both had motorcycles and used to ride to the beach on the weekend.
The Swing did have some excellent shows!
For real though, this album, front to back will rock your face.
I was around 3 when this album came out. My dad was obsessed with it and played it several times a day!…by the time I was 5 I knew every word😎
I was 5
AND DITTO DITTO DITTO
Boston was a great band!!!! Loved their music
Wanna hear a happy tune by BOSTON Feeling satisfied . One of their greats. Just a great song to get you going.
Great song Great Band! incredible vocals and harmonies and killer guitar work. You'll enjoy Boston's work.
I've been listening to this song for 48 years, and it never gets old. RIP BRAD.
In the 70s, we'd lie there with our big ol' headphones on and just trip on groups like Boston (and ELO, Rush, Queen, the Who, Blue Oyster Cult, etc.).
Definitely one of my top 10 songs of all times for me I just love this song 🥰👌

It was a great time to be alive and I'm glad you two can appreiciate it. Your mega-watt smile tells me all I need to know.
Love this song. Brings back great memories of partying in high school.
just watching you two enjoy the ride brings joy to my Heart. I listen to Boston every day since 1976. Rock and Groove on my Friends.
i remember when the album came out. it blew everybody away. Tom Scholz ( the lead guitarist ) was an engineer and tweaked his amps the way he wanted them and was an amazing player
When this titular album came out we either listened to it on LP, cassette tape or 8-track; that was it.
I remember listening for the 1st time and getting through "More Than A Feeling" and "Peace of Mind", with said mind THOROUGHLY blown, but when "Foreplay" trickled, then BLASTED through the speakers I thought it couldn't get any better. I thought Foreplay was a fade out and not just a fade. However, when "Long Time" started...W.O.W.
