- The Renault 5 is the most exciting new car of 2024 - first look detailed review. Following in the tyre treads of Fiat's 500 and the new Mini, Renault has waited 52 years to launch an all-new (all electric) vibrant and unashamedly French Renault 5 to the market. With two battery pack sizes, an EV range of up to 250 miles and styling that carefully weaves between retro and futuristique, the £22,000 (est) R5 builds on Renault's electric models that began some 10 years ago with the Zoe.

Need an Ali G advert with the yellow one, be a laugh!😂
Junglist massive!!
Ali E
Flagging coppers from behind the door.
With a big stereo.😅
That would be fucking grand
THIS is what we need. We don't need bloody Cybertrucks, we need practical, well-priced, fun, EVs like this.
Exactly, Agree 100% 👍👍
@@Brian-om2hh there's no such thing as a practical, well-priced, fun EV. EVs by definition are none of those things.
I need a Cyberdog
@richardharrold9736 Sure, grandad. Keep yelling at the clouds.
Well priced 😅😅😅
In an age of identical faceless Chinese SUVs that I struggle to tell apart, this is a revelation. I can put aside any EV prejudices, simply because it looks absolutely amazing inside and out. Thanks to God, Renault are back!!
After seeing this new Renault, you can immediately see that the flashy Chinese jobs lack the flair and clever, stylish design of this car..... Part of that comes from heritage, making cars for 100+ years..... The Chinese stuff has no heritage.
Name one Chinese SUV.
Byd atto is pretty bland, but china is leading the way tbh making some of the best evs@zer0bre
This is what EVs should be. Small, light and efficient. And reasonably priced. Not like these large, heavy and unnecessarily powerful SUVs. I love the styling. I worked in a Renault dealership in the 80s and can see the old R5 in this new one. Chapeau Renault.
Thing is, unless you're Mat Watson, the top speed and acceleration of an EV is incredibly useless, because most of the time you're limited to 60mph anyways
I'm not a huge EV fan, but I do like this. Surely this is the way the industry needs to go instead of making huge 2.5 tonne SUVs and chasing crazy 0-60 times.
The "crazy" 0-60 times are a by-product of having a big enough battery to give medium-large family sized cars a decent range. Of course fast 0-60 also sells cars and has done since before the Renault 5 GT Turbo was around
Renault have absolutely nailed the design, it's so refreshing to see colourful paint jobs instead of the miserable black, white and silver palette we've become accustomed too in the UK. Also huge props to Renault for giving us PHYSICAL BUTTONS for heater controls! They really are on to a winner here. Excited to see what they do with the Twingo and R4
It looks fantastic, completely agree, the colours add to the design and we need more of this to avoid cars becoming like white goods in the EV era. It's good to have a bit of personality and creativity.
It needs a V6

While I'd love to see that I'd settle for a 4x4 twin motor giant killer version!
Wait and see the Alpine version😅
195-55 is a good tyre proportion for today’s horrible roads. However I would go for the steel wheels I might even fit aftermarket steels (with exact same spec of course). They can be trashed by potholes without breaking your wallet.
As someone who was flicking through the pages of max power in the 90s, this put a smile on my face. I have to be honest, I think this car looks amazing.
Not since the Honda E have I wanted a new car so badly! Bravo Renault on building an absolute beauty of a car. So refreshing to see such excellent colours too!
Yeah the honda e was the only electric thing I was interested in. The new 5 looks in that line
Correct.
Honda E is a gorgeous design, simple, small, stunning, crap range
But it's a heavy, 5 door, FWD with no power. It's also electric and we're now losing tens of thousands of charging points.
Too many people get swept up with that whiff of Nostalgia.
If they'd made it a 3cylinder turbo hybrid , it'd be a winner.
That yellow interior is immense.
Isn't it just?
@@TheLateBrakeShow Do you know fi you can get the green exterior with the yellow interior? That lemon-lime combo would be perfect.....sadly as an American it is off the menu though, so I will keep driving my 1998 Nissan Sentra until I move to Sweden in a few years.
I have the same feeling as when I first saw the Ioniq 5, this car is beautiful and I want it.
I love the ionic 5, that R5 is amazing too!
Renault has always been a brand willing to do things differently, who doesn't remember the Fuego, the wind, R4, Vel Satis, avantime, R16 and the original Twingo? Such epic cars with their own style.
I had a rental Twingo MK1 for a week when I lived in Sweden and the car made you smile and so roomy too.
So I'm glad Renault are stepping up to the mark bringing back the past only Fiat so far managed to pull off. Thank you Renault and thank you for the upload 👍🏼
Renaissance of the iconic cars from France 🇫🇷
Renaultsance?
As a happy Fiat 500e owner I like to see more competition in the small electric cars coming in. This new R5 looks great!
you had me at baguette holder... Possibly my new fave EV - not another SUV but exactly what is needed in this space!
This is the first electric I’ve looked at that I actually want, what a cool little thing!
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED FOR A CAR LAUNCH. I absolutely adore it. I ADORE IT. Renault, bravo.
I've got a Tungsten R5 GTT, and have been waiting for this to release for so long! I'm glad you reviewed it Jonny - absolutely awesome vid 😎 you've sealed the deal and I'll be ordering one as soon as I can.
I love the design, simple ,clean and elegant yet very modern and the proportions are right, that's how a car should look like 👍
Wow, the iconic Renault 5 is back! This was my first new car years ago that my parents bought me when I graduated from college. The best and finest suspension ever seen for its class along with the most comfortable and well designed seats, makes it fun to drive. It's when I fell in love with Renault and it continues to this day. It is nice to see it with a new modern uplift but maintaining its charming essence, its sporty interior and distinctive lines that make it unmistakable to say that the Renault 5 is here
As design exercises go, this must be up there with one of the very best in decades. Could be an absolute game changer, especially at that price point. What a thing.
I'll take the yellow one please. Thank you.
I will have the gorgeous GREEN please ☝️☺
A baguette carrier! That is a tour de force of design. Not since the VW Beetle flower vase has there been a whimiscal touch in a car like this! Fantastique. Bravo, Renault.
Any day a new, compact hatch comes to market is a good day--wish we got these in the US!
Looks fab! Very exciting and a really well articulated walk around. Thx!
Renault are my favourite manufacturer. Great design and not afraid to be bold. Looks brilliant. Well done guys ✌🏻
Rather like those of us who were around when the original R5 came out, it has undergone a bit of expansion . . .
Yup, I don't really see the attraction - it's a step in the right direction but it's not yet where I need a value EV to be. This fat green jellybean can't fit adults in the back seats and will probably have 150 mile "real world in countries where winter exists" range for 25k.. no thanks!
Name a car that hasn't?
I also remember Renault 5 of old and they were pretty awful. Having to sell sub standard goods by using retro appeal is sad.
@@CaptainHoratioPugwash Remind me what a 50 year old Citroen Ami looked like
I have had all 3 generations of ZOE so guess this will have to find it's way on my drive, been looking forward to this for years and i am not disappointed...
This design is automotive perfection ( in my eyes) it’s modern retro done perfectly inside and out.💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤
Just found your channel! Impressive and detailed review, Wow. Most detailed R5 introduction review.
Love it! The first EV I've seen that I would actually consider buying! I wish Renault every success with it.
Well done Jonny and Renault : a suitably characterful review, for a wonderfully characterful car.
Jonny, I have to say…the level of detail you go into with your car reviews puts you head and shoulders above anyone else and any other channel on RUclips…Keep them coming 👍
Jonny great scoop and as ever superb production values. Really enjoy the detail in your vids and love the way you tell the story of this new 5. Just wondered can you not control where the adverts appear? They are breaking in mid word sometimes! Maybe RUclips doesn’t let you set the break points? All the best, D
This is the long awaited future of motoring, loving every detail 👍 great video Jonny look forward to the road test
It is a beautiful looking thing both inside and out. So want one. Thanks Jonny for all the interesting details.
Looks like it could be really fun on the road too, which is my only real gripe about my Corsa E.
2 things made me question their choices 1) 80 to 100kw charging is on the slow side, especially if you had the smaller battery and wanted to go further. 2) Reno really reminded me of the Microsoft Paperclip, the most annoying ’helper’ ever!
Wow. Great video 👍😁. You are the most detailed reporter I know of. The note book thats so retro cool looking, I really feel the impression you for this car.
Thanks for sharing❤
I bought a new Renault 5 in 1981 and loved it, although it was a bit feeble in the engine department. This is just what I want, a compact hatchback.
bloody love it reminds me of my first car purchase a second hand light metallic blue Renault 5 GT Turbo in my early 20s
Johnny I don’t normally sit through a whole new car review but I loved the original Renault five and this new R5 really looks fantastic. Just as with the mini and the Fiat 500, I know the ladies will love this car and with five doors, five seats and a decent boot who can’t love it? P.s. nicely presented by you. 🙏
Another great video Jonny. Keep them coming! I chuckle everytime you start talking about the wheels because you know the black circles promo is coming up!!
That's the idea...
The last tyres I got, I got them via Asda Tyres. They were a bit cheaper than Black Circles.
Yes, this is more like it! Will look forward to you having one on the road for us Jonny 👍
We really are going somewhere with that car. Great product.
This is so nice design and proper sized electric car for my use. There is already lot of hype brewing for this car.
And the hype will be matched by the waiting list.. At least Renault will be pleased with that..
Really good video, Jonny. Love this new Renault, at last a new car that isn’t “meh”!!
Great video Johnny. Very informative and thank you for doing the research.
I have a Megane RS which I track on track days and this looks like a great road car.
Great to have the detail that you provided.
Looks ace in green.
I wonder if you can spec body colour and interior colours separately or do they come as combined options.
This is the sort of stance I wanted the Honda E to have. I was gutted when they made it more vanilla when it went into production. This looks absolutely stunning.
The Honda E is now no longer on sale new. Maybe just as well now this Renault has arrived. I can't imagine many would choose a Honda E over this, with it's *way* more stylish design at £5k less.......
Renault has knocked it right out of the park with this!
I loved my 5 with its roll back roof, bright yellow paint and fun attitude. Drove that car from Toronto to Vancouver twice. Too much fun
I'd say that is probably the best modern , retro inspired designs so for on a modern EV. I do like the idea of the use of the heating system, something EV seems to fall down on, in my opinion. Well done Renault . Nice work.
I really love the colours, especially the green 👍🏻, to get people interested in electric cars, this is the way to do it ! Affordable funky cars, with an option on battery size and distance ! It looks like it should be great to drive also.
We will have to see how you get on 👍🏻
This was hands down the best review of this car even when compared to the bigger, mainstream channels. Well done!
As always, great work mate!
So cool. Renault have designed this beautifully.
if a clio and a R5 had a baby... this is it.. Well done Renault.. Super french and super cool :) Great review as always!!
A brilliant review Jonny. I like it.
I’ll be ordering uk asap.
Watched all R5 videos lately and this is the best one by far.
New subscriber👍🏻
Welcome aboard TLBS 👌🏾
Wow, I have never wanted an electric car before, but I really want one of these! Jonny’s excellent presenting also make me want one even more! The Honda e looked good but didn’t quite tick all the boxes, this definitely does. Great job Renault… now, where do I order one?
Yes, Jonny's relaxed but informative style of presentation makes you want to hear more. Unlike the other bloke, pushing sticks up exhaust pipes.
As a lifelong Reno-phile from when I had a Renault R8 for my first car, wow!…. Love it! Modern tech with the old style French flair and character that the original R5 had. Not for everyone but I love it. Great video👍
Great review as always and this looks stunning! Hope you get the drive one soon.
Great video Jonny. If I had the money I'd be really keen on getting one of these in a bright colour!
I’m not usually a fan of Renault’s latest stuff over the past decade or more, but this looks beautifully done by Renault! Very reminiscent in so many ways of the original Renault 5, and incredible that they’ve kept the price point within reach.
Shame it's electric and therefore so bad for the environment
🤦🤦
Just driving back from Paris at the moment and followed a camouflaged mule of the new Renault 5. What a shape!!Thanks for the awesome vids 👏 🙌 👌
Jonny has unequaled enthusiasm for nearly all cars. Renault et al are super lucky to have dudes like him out there. If that wasn't the case, cars like this would pass by unnoticed- for sure..
Too bad it's an EV. Petrol would be a blast.
30 secs in "it's fully electric..."
Groan...
😅
Love the bright colour options.
That black model with the chrono rims looks superb!
Looks absolutely amazing I remember with great fondness the Renault 5 that my farther used to have
Looks great and good review 👍
I think this is absolutely mega providing the production version actually looks like this !
This will never come to the states but it would be perfect for our house. Love the column shifter. I wish the Bolt was this well laid out.
Looks brilliant thanks Johnny
Brilliant design and (on paper), brilliant execution.
This car is stunning and so happy that Renault design is back after so many years, even decades, in the wilderness. Also, it appears they have embedded the design with real tech advances in true French fashion. I hope this really is the real deal that it looks like.
Looks lovely, fully support everything about it and I'm 100% here for this kind of shiz. Thank you Renault and Jonny!
Great review as always, also loving the new glasses! If you owned one, would you call it Johnny 5?
There was a Johnny 7 around 50 odd years ago, a fancy kids toy gun with lots of extra add ons......
You are a great car journalist ! What a great review of a super cool car !
What a superb review!
Slick review Jonny.
Thank Jonny. I like what I see. I totally get why you like it. I'm impatient for a full review.
I really admire the passion, and level of detail you put into your car reviews Jonny. Geeking out about the little details, and the fact your not afraid to dip into your notebook to make sure you're being accurate. Bravo on a fantastic introduction to the car. Can't wait until you get a UK spec model to drive.
Compared to the Carwow "review" that just slagged off the cramped rear interior, and seemed to go out of its way to show this for what felt like the majority of the video.
And it seemed Robby Lew's lot either didn't get an invite, or didn't care enough to get it out after the release.
You had me at Baguette carrier, Johnny🤩
This looks so good! I'm glad they haven't disappointed.
What a gorgeous car. Thought the Zoe was unique but this is masterpiece. Used to own a Renault 5 in the 90s. Jean-Michelle Jarre is a very popular French musician.
Into those seats , really like the nod to the OG Gordini seat design.
The attention to detail is superb.
Wow wow, a cool car, love the retro feel and the three spoke steering wheel.
Absolutely love it. Sections all around the r5 that remind me of my original gt5. I’m not in to ev’s not yet at least but this model is swaying me towards an ev. Think I’ll be booking a test drive when possible. Love the way it looks both outside and in side. Well done Renault
Bold design :-) Nice review by the way.
About time we saw cars like this on the ev scene
We love baguette's too in the US. And fun, sporty, beautiful, colorful little cars!
Man, that's a good looking car! The Honda E's fate was sad - but I'm glad this took it's place. :)
A great review. Love that the most interesting bit for Johnny is the rear suspension 😂 Seriously, that’s the attention to detail we come here for.
Refreshing and enthusiastic a nice style will watch more of you.
Hello!. What watch are you wearing in this video?.... cheers!!!.
I'm getting flashbacks of UK garage coming out of twin Halfords 6x9's in the parcel shelf and a big stereo speaker in the boot instead of a sub, lol.
Great video
Ive just sprayed my fiat coupe 20vt in that green colour , love it!
Brilliant . Green with yellow roof stripe and yellow interior . Thanks for great review as always .
