"the last round is worth so much that all the past rounds dont matter for anything" has always been my least favorite competition show trope
I understand it slightly in the case of AS7. Bc there has to be a substantial boost that episode or else why even compete if you know you can’t make the top four based on stars. But three stars was overkill, no one needed that much of a boost. Two would’ve been fine, and if they would’ve just given Shea the girl group win she deserved, she would’ve ended up w the same star count anyway.
Like what was the point of anything before this??
They shoulda spread out the extra star challenges throughout the whole season
Literally every highschool camp competition format 🤣
@@Spagbolisnotme Well I agree the twist gave the final challenge too much relevance; but tbf the rest of the season still played a huge part in determining the top 4. So there still was a point to it.
La más draga format lol
This is why the distribution of badges should have been different. 2 for winning the lipsync, 1 for being Top 2.
I think also giving one star to the “high” queen could have also made blocking more strategic when queens like monet and raja would have wracked up more stars without ever lipsyncing
REAL, I literally thought the same once I first saw the season
You're forgetting the runway star too
Nah, you should have to really earn that badge, you shouldn't get one just for taking part because then, what's the point in doing a good lipsync? You're gonna get a badge anyway so fuck it.
@@FannyLerouxTimethe 10k?
As someone who was rooting for Jaida since the reveal, watching her miss out on the finale was heartbreaking
It is she was one of my picks to win but she was given a star while Trinity got a star blocked from her so end of the day it sucked but felt fair
I felt the same. As a newer winner and someone who had her reign affected by the pandemic, you could see just how much more she had to show from her season. It was giving very Trinity all stars 6 being snubbed as a frontrunner just right before finale.
One could say *rib-breaking*
Very much this. She was a silent killer, kept on winning at the beginning and avoided being blocked untill she was suddenly in the lead with nobody expecting it.
Her run took a very unsatisfying end ..
Jan, Jaida, and now Heidi. Production really hates the S12 girls!
What they can do for this kind of format is giving out more stars. 1 star for Mini Challenge. 2 stars for Main challenge. 1 more star for Top 2 Lipsync. Some more random stars and the way to take out the stars from other queen. Basically make them full on Mario party and it will be exciting each episode.
and i think they missed an opportunity to make drama, by having them give one of their three stars away. considering the episode was all about charity and giving back. or whatever
And a star for the runway!
This is brilliant and the way to do it but the DR producers are allergic to creativity
and they can strategize more, like maybe if person with the most stars has 6 stars but second place has four imagine if you could take the second place persons stars instead that way you eliminate them from the top.
"full on Mario Party" 🤣
I still don't understand why the "fans" get so angry with the queens rather than the producers and showrunners. It's crazy pants
I've always thought it was strange that the regular season finale was more grand than an All Stars finale. They should at least tape it live like they do for a regular season.
Yes!
Yes!!!! At least do it for all winners all stars
But even the regular ones aren’t live and they probably don’t want to or have the money to do that for the regular and allstars season since they are pushing the out back to back to back theses days
@@marcusmelancon3426 they're taped before a live audience. Is that more clear?
ngl, I hated how they mistreated Yvie in this season, she's such a force and an icon and yet they made her look like just a big weirdo with no heart, when there's so much heart to her
She doesn't help herself though with her personality and the things she says. She can come across very unlikable at times.
she should have won like two more challenges
@@legendg219Such as?? She shouldn't have to cater to timid white fans to have her drag respected and thats factual.
Freak frag fly ❤
@@beevonerd What do you mean white fans? What the fucks race gotta do with it? She's not a very likable person to me and that ain't because of her race.
I don’t know if anyone’s commented it, but I think this twist could’ve been better if it happened a few times, like at the ball, the snatch game and then at the talent show. It wouldn’t feel as a forced way to put some people in the finale over others
Yeah, and in that case it should obviosly have been two stars and not three
The mistreatment of Yvie was so foul it was so mean and seeing the after math of yvie’s tweets and stuff is so heartbreaking
What mistreatment? She literally was the weakest lol
@@geenalawrence8338I think the mistreatment means like the objectifcation of her "big dick"
Girl, she literally fell on her head on the talent show but they cut it out
I think jaida and yvie deserved the wins they had. Jaida wasnt really strong on many challanges and yvie got easily outshined bye the other queens in every challange. You could even argue that her win on the girl groups was stolen from the other team so what mistreatment? Cmon
@@veniceviolet16 She HAS done good on drag race, you just bein emotional.
I always thought... why didn't they just give two stars instead of three? That would've meant that both, Jinxx and Monet had the power to pick one queen from all the queens with three stars. That also would've meant that Shea would've caught up at last moment and had the chance to get into the finale. With three stars, it really felt like they wanted Shea there and rigged the game on her favour. 😅
Just casually mentioning how Viv was screwed over by every twist.
She was the only queen who got blocked and didn't make Top 4
The star giveaway twist and the three star twist meant Shea and Jaida finished ahead of her despite winning less challenges
And as we all know, in the she done already done had herses tournament, the boxes are pre-picked and she was given Push It over Let's Hear It For The Boy.
Drag race was gonna do anything it could to stop the only queen with a similar skillset to Jinkx from potentially beating her at her own game.
Probably also just didn’t want an international queen to do well, she was basically just stunt casting to introduce us to the idea of international queens being on the US franchise so they could crown Jimbo the following year lol
trinity got blocked as well.
@@brunoir283 Read my comment again.
Not really, they're the ones who cast her lol. So to go so far out of their way to stop her is a stretch. They could've just gotten someone else. I see what you're saying tho. 👌🏿
@@jude_illusion your phrasing was weird, it seems like you meant the only one to not make the top 4 _of the season_ who got blocked. do you mean, Viv was the only one who got blocked despite not making the Top 4 of that _episode?_
Here to say Shea and Monet were fully subbed of the Y2K girl group and I will not be convinced otherwise
Yes. I would say Shea should've been top 2 with Monet at the TikTok challenge as well.
Even Jinkx and Jaida were better than who actually won
I didn't hate the outcome but I did hate the method. It's the same way they forced Jinx to win the lipsync. It is rigged and I accept that, I think it's okay that we can see who belongs in the finale fairly early on regardless of the season. But I prefer it when they are able to showcase why they belong there and use challenges that will help them shine, rather than force us to believe things that just aren't true.
It’s not rigged when Jinkx did the best the entire season by a lot. Anyone else winning would’ve ruined drag race
@veniceviolet16 nobody is discrediting the fact that Jinx should've won. The complaint is about the way producers did it. If you know you're gonna have to do shady editing (which everyone's gonna see through anyways), just to make it seem like the lipsync was close enough to crown her...then just don't do the lipsync format at all? They could've done the regular season thing and have everyone do their own number. But this just made it seem like the lipsyncs didn't matter whatsoever and they were gonna crown Jinx no matter what the outcome in each one was. That's what pisses people off. Not the fact that Jinx won.
She didnt win the lipsync, she won the season... monet didnt deserve to win the whole show just because of a good lipsync
Monet was only in the final due to the last twist. She only had one star and she wasn't even the rightful choice for that (she did fine in the Rusical but her runway wasn't the best and other queens like Yvie and Jinx did better than her in the Rusical as well). Not to mention Trinity 100% won the lipsync that led Monet to the final. I guess producers were avoiding the headache of having two white queens in the final and Jinkx was the one everybody saw ending up there so they couldn't take her out. I'm glad Raja won the parallel competition even though she and Jinkx stood out during the whole competition and she didn't get enough stars for it
@@bbsss9252 But Sasha Velour deserved to win because of one good lipsync? You can't pick and choose like that, boo, because when you and most of the fans do, it's only to favor the white queens over the queens of color
I think the idea of no winners going home was to protect their integrity and to hold them to the candle they are. I think this was the perfect set to carry through the whole season. The last twist with the most stars was completely dumb. The top 4 should’ve been Jinkx, Monet, and the 3rd with Jaida and Trin having to maybe lip sync for 4th. Jaida looked so defeated and hurt and she really worked her ass off and deserved a top placement
One of Jaida's stars was given to her by Jinx. So I thing Raja or The Vivienne deserved it more.
@@lithiumclears that’s fair. I did find that one to be more of a decent addition as opposed to one challenge being worth 5 stars
The All Stars 7 twist was the equivalent of the blue spiny shell in Mario Kart. 😅
There's one queen that this season really did the dirty on and that is The Vivienne. Consistently strong, consistently overlooked. Was it because she was only non-US queen?
Absolutely! The viv was amazing.
Yes. And I assume she probably knew about this even when she came on the season - there was no way they were gonna make somebody who isn't from the American main seasons the Winner of all Winners. She had no chance from the start, no matter how well she did.
Absolulutely yes... The good old American dream 😍
it was just such a shame jaida and even viv didn’t get to the finale after such great performances during the whole season
pls pls pls do a video on yvie!! she’s talked so much recently about her mistreatment and such and id love to hear you talk about it
Yes yes yes pretty please! 🥰
See, I think the Drag Race producers know that the Talent/Variety Show has become one of the most popular challenges on the show, especially on All-Stars seasons. And with that, I think they want to ensure they don't lose viewers after that's done. So that may be part of why on AS7 (as well as, apparently, AS8), they've put it at the end instead of the beginning. The Three Star thing, though, it's clear they had that to ensure whoever their favorites were would be in the finale.
And with AS8, it feels weird to have it the way they are, doing it with all the eliminated girls (except the Neutral Closet, bummer we may never know what her talent would've been) instead of the beginning as a good intro to the season just feels... strange. I guess we'll see how it goes.
You know, if they DO Know that, maybe they could give the queens enough time and budget to do the talent show properly. Almost no comedy queen has enough time to present a proper comedy routine given the talent shows are often just 1 minute per person (still amazed that Ginger Bitch managed to pull a roast with France 2). And so many US All Star talent shows seem cheaper than Espana S2 talents where almost every queen had a unique set, multiple props, multiple outfits, several backup dancers . . .
The only thing that I loved about those two last episodes was Kylie Minogue Supernova.
There's a part of me that feels bad for Shea with this. It's clear the producers knew she'd be a big favorite going into this season, with the audience rallying for her after her abrupt Season 9 finale loss. There's a reason many have said that All-Stars 5 was made for her. And though she started EXTREMELY well, since she was the star of the first episode of this season, it's like she didn't seem to get focused on as much as the season went on, or at least didn't do as well as anticipated. And then they realized "Oh wait, we want Shea in the finale, how are we going to make THAT happen now?", hence this whole Three Star twist.
And the thing is, her Talent show performance was fine. Her song was fun, but it didn't feel like anything to write home about. The Top 2 of that episode, arguably, were Monet and RaJa. Yet because they figured they'd get backlash if Shea didn't make the finale or had at least one more win (yet they snubbed Yvie in the same way all season?), they praised hers as one of the best and gave her the win/finale push here. Thing is, it's not Shea's fault for that, she is an exceptional drag artist who's deserved all the success she's had. It's more a producer problem and being the result of rigging in a way to have her meet the expectations.
Production didn't forget about Shea, they wanted Jinkx to win but knew going into the season that Shea was regarded as the biggest competition, so they downplayed her performance while elevating Jinkx the whole time. However, production didn't want to be blamed, so they put Shea in the finale to placate her fans and also make her, and not themselves a target for the haters who then said she was being favored. How exactly was she favored when she was never a contender even when they put her in the finale lol.
My theory is that they knew Shea would perform relatively well throughout the season because she's a powerhouse drag queen and thought the fandom would be receptive to a Shea robbed/"underdog" type of storyline...just like on Season 9. So they consistently didn't give her wins when she deserved them, but constantly had her in the "top 4" (the 4 queens the judges always brought up during deliberations). Instead, she just got hate for (rightfully) getting Top 2 in the Talent Show and earning 3 stars because of it.
@@mandysjones3098facts
UH NO. Shes deserved to win that girl group challenge with Monet they did the best. You could argue any other win for her as well she did great. But they wanted Jinx from the jump because her fans are pit bulls so they downplayed shea and gave her stars at the end bec they knew she would do well in the talent show. (Raja was cultural and unique but come on now it got boring real quick shea was just a professional) they wanted her to look like she didn’t earn it as much as jinx did same with Trinity who got chosen to go by monet and monet who also got stars in thw twist they made jinx look like the only earned winner which was bs. Monet had plenty wins if they gave her what she deserved yvie had at least two more wins & jinx got ine she shouldnt have
Also i love jinxy poo im just pointing out production
While All-Stars 7 undoubtedly showcased remarkable performances and celebrated the winners, it also had its shortcomings. The season's overwhelming positivity, lack of narrative depth, and the controversial three-star twist all contributed to a mixed reception among fans. Despite the flaws, All-Stars 7 remains an important chapter in the Drag Race franchise, raising discussions about the impact of twists and the balance between entertainment and authenticity. As fans eagerly await future seasons, the lessons learned from All-Stars 7 can contribute to the ongoing evolution of this beloved reality show.
bot?
c’mon academic article!
I think you could add the charity stars to this as well. They both destroyed the integrity of the format. A queen who was struggling or middling could become a front runner suddenly after just one challenge, sometime through no effort of the queen themself.
The queen of she already done had herses was really random too. Raja definitely did not win the lipsync it was planned from the beginning which I get Raja is amazing and she's one of my faves but there's so many other titles fitting her like ultimate style icon or senior citizen
The funniest part is if they offered 2 stars instead of 3 in the last episode, it would have felt so much fairer, Shea would have still been in the running, and they could have either let Monet and Jinkx (the queens with the most stars) or Monet and Shea (as the challenge winners) choose a queen with 3 stars to move on to the finale 🤷🏻
I gotta say it was the first season ever of drag race I checked out of by episode 2. The positive only thing was just ridiculous and a terrible editing choice, it made an otherwise great season feel incredibly bland. The point system was a nice idea but then they need to have something like a score board...?
Idk I think eliminations make the show work in the end, it just feels like there are more real stakes. I think something like the Fame Game twist is a nice way to do both. Maybe incorporation of eliminated queens more in other ways during the competition...?
Great video btw!
A mixture of the talent show twist and the fact that the lip sync smackdown was obviously rigged both kinda blew the wind out of my sails. If you're planning on pulling that, then just announce the winner.
I finally subscribed! You're the first Drag Race fan made breakdown channel I've ever followed because your critiques are always so intelligent and respectful. You made me see Drag Race in a new light, because I'm not much of a fan of reality shows outside Drag Race, your breakdowns really help me understand the sort of reality TV mechanisms and tropes that I'm not familiar with. Just wanted to say keep up the good work!
The 3 star twist has its problems, but it deffinitely didn't make the rest of the season obsolete.
The rest of the season still played a big role in defining the top 4. Jynkx got there exclusively bc of the previous challenges. Trinity was ultimately chosen by Monet, but she wouldn't have been eligible without her previous wins. And both Monet and Shea needed her previous wins to secure their spot (otherwise they would've been tied with TTT and Jaida).
Sure the final challenge played way too big a role, but the rest of the season still mattered, it wasn't obsolete.
They could have made it like this: everyone earns a star or point per week. The Top two queens earn two stars. After the lipsync they can remove a star from the other queens. That way the lipsync wins always mean, and they csn also give three star for the most important challenges, like the ball or snatch game. Maybe the star removals can be secret at the beginning so the queens dont really know how many stars they have
That’s would’ve been more exciting
the thing ab the AS7 format is that there have to be some stakes that last ep or why even compete. bc theoretically there could’ve been someone left w 0 stars who had no chance to make it to top four even if they did win challenges. and it’s not as if Ru can just pick the ppl who make it to the top like regular seasons, it’s star based. so I think having more stars available at the end is fair, though I agree that three is a bit much. they only needed to do two, three was overkill and probably just a setup for the Monet Trinity alliance to be narratively impactful and to have the stars that were given out EP5/6 (to Jaida and Yvie) mean something since Jaida had three cuz she was given one by Jinkx.
also, I agree that production basically threw Shea to the wolves by not giving her wins when she deserved them (EP 6 for sure, EP 7 maybe) and then using a twist to get her into the top four. Idk why they always think fans will respond positively to twists when most of the time the fandom is either lukewarm or very enraged by them lmao
Honestly, just don't let the finale be decided by the stars. Make the stars give you an advantage or something.
On top of everything, the variety show is one of the most subjective challenges in the series, too, so producers could've picked any two queens to win and justify it however they wanted (having said this I don't think there's any way at least Monet wasn't gonna be in the top that episode).
The Shea vs Camera jumpscare 😂😂
I still feel like, in general, a talent show should come at the end (even if it’s a second one, called like a “talent showcase” or something) where the queens wear their best drag and perform their best drag. Lip syncing is obviously a core part of drag, but they do it everrrry episode and it’s already had so much impact throughout the season - let them end on whatever they chose as their strongest note.
It was a good idea to make it possible for any queen to reach the top 4 up until the last episode. The problem was that there was nothing leading up to it, since the 2-star challenge didn’t actually result in any queen gaining more than one star
Where are my stars?! ⭐⭐⭐ I disliked the twist on this season. I agree that the "She done already had hersis" is a great extra though. I love Raja but she lost that lipsync. 🍵
The season has a youtube video ending "whomever wins the last round wins the game" teas
I think it would have beeen really gag worthy if every block was actually a secret star and it was revealed right before the last challenge (also it would allow the production to put other queens on the top other then jinkx)
AS7 is a good season for those who like to see queens doing great. For those who only watch for the drama, not the right season.
I am so sorry but I will forever stay by the fact it should’ve been, 1 for being in the top and 2 for winning the lipsync, I also was so over the twinner story line through the entire season (love Monet and Trin tho), also Raja, Shea and Yvie were so mistreated on this season, they literally were pushed aside for almost all of the season
You were right, Kandy and Jimbo did perform for
Fun. Well done 😂
they had the right idea with the bonus star raja and jinkx got to gift. the problem is by the time we get to the three star twist that was the only other precedent set. really wished they would’ve cranked up the mario party. like every other episode there’s a gag with the stars that really makes the competition stuff.
I kinda feel like Monet and Shea were always planned to win that final challenge, both of them had been robbed of stars that they probably deserved in previous weeks and production knew what their talents were going to be beforehand so they probably planned that it would be a “shocking twist” for two of the bottom queens to make it to the finale
but monet would make it to the finale even if the talent show was only worth 1 star, bc she would have tied with jaida and trinity (with 3 stars) and jaida would replace shea in the top 4
I don’t think so Monet and Shea were gonna win that challenge regardless but I think originally I t was just the last challenge and they did the three stars to make sure Shea got in I know people love Shea but let’s be real that was her only way into the finale she was going to win the challenge regardless but wouldn’t have made it to the finale
I really liked the season because I really liked seeing all the winners performing and the runways and everything. But you are right. The format of this was weird.
Tbf they could've gone for a better points system... like instead of gaining one for being in the top, they could do it like an XP system (eg. +1,000 for a win, +500 for top two, 0 for safe, -400 for bottom) ykwim??!
Because THEN they could've added in other twists that make mini challenges and runways ACTUALLY IMPORTANT!!! They could've even made it a currency system, giving queen's the option to use their points to do certain things like get a head start or veto powers... like if they did that (and balanced the points right), they could've made an even more gripping season...
It would've been more fair and fun if at the end queens can choose to gamble any stars they have to double them if they get in the top or lose them if not.
The way that showing me a chart really did scientifically convince me to subscribe 😂 enjoying the videos!
They had a perfect storyline (that every reality producer would want!) with Jinkx vs The Vivienne. Viv was giving them everything for that storyline, but nooooo they had to screw her over with every twist they could throw. Imagine a final 4 with the twinners/alliance having to go against each other AND the two excellent "comedic"-ish queens who ate the whole season going head to head. It could have ended the same way with Jinkx and Monet as the final 2, but with a more satisfying narrative!
Even a 2 star twist wasn’t needed at the talent show. If they gave just 1 star to the winners and a second star only to the winner of the lipsync, we could still have the same outcome. This would still allow any of the girls to still qualify.
There was an all winners on survivor too and they also tried to use a currency as a “surprise twist” and at the end it also flopped immensely. I feel like all winners as a theme will always carry the weight of the season and it’ll be hard to find something creative that will stick.
honestly, regardless of who is in what position: let it be one star at the very end. it's simply the fairest decision for the game. and i believe being able to lose and let lose is a fundamental element of any competition, and i'm very sure all of the queens know that and would respect that. they are not getting eliminated, so they participated until the end, still being able to show their craft, wit and talent. it might just be my sportsbackground speaking there, but if you start a competition, you go to the end, even if there is no way for you to place first. you don't stop halfway through a marathon even if you fall behind a hundred people. shea is an amazing artist, i'm pretty sure she would have still given it her all. and she would not have been forced into a position of receiving tons of hate due to a bad decision of the producers.
honestly I don't get why they didn't make the big twist for episode 11 that the top 2 of the challenge lip sync and the winner gets to pick which tied queens get into the top 4... it's a much more fun twist than just having the queen with the most stars pick imo
it always saddened me that episode 12 soiled what was an amazing season with such heavy handed producer shenanigans with yvie somehow losing her lip sync to raja and what could’ve been monet’s best performance be cut down to nothing. yes jinkx and raja did better than monet and yvie but it just puts such a sour taste in my mouth to see them give other queens the short end of the stick like that.
What I don’t understand is how some people will say Shea beat Jinkx. Yes Jinkx wasn’t the best dancer but it was original.
Back in Season 2 of RDR, Phoenix got a lot of flack for copying Lady Gaga’s dance routine. She was eliminated as well. Yet Shea did the same (copied Gaga’s dance routine) and fans believe she should’ve won. Makes 0 sense.
Totally agree that the finale was anti-climatic, specially the stage, maybe not even a live finale but use the Secret Celebrity Drag Race S2 stage for that last episode, would have been great for the entire competition even!
Yes! I kept wondering why all of the budget went to Secret Celebrity Drag Race and not AS7. What a wasted opportunity.
Honestly to me the thing that makes me the talent show twist the most aggravating is that it made the final lineup rigged, for a top 4 that would of occurred naturally If the queens were given wins they deserved. Shea and Monet especially should of won certain challenges ( the most obvious being they both should of won the second girl group)
The twist is so close to great but falls apart so hard in its faults. It honestly feels like how the assassin twist is a more convoluted version of the all stars format, but they just skipped to the convoluted version of itself. Just have the lip-sync winner pick someone to lose a star outright, so there's no reliance on the luck of the person they picked doing good in the next challenge.
Not showing negative critiques made some of the Top 2s make no sense whatsoever
If they green light AW2, I think it would be cool if they added a steal option, a queen can lose a star, or something fun, like give the platinum plunger more significance other than blocking them from earning a star
I always thought the twist would have made more sense if the last challenge split the “blocked” stars between the winners. There were 3 successful blocks so have the top 2 win 2 stars, and the lip-sync winner win an extra 1
They should’ve put the 3 star twist in the beginning of the season. That way more girls fight harder idk
kaylasays did a great video on AS7 and I agree with her saying that the random stars given out by the challenge winners should've been used more than once if production was this worried about the bad math they had accidentally created and to keep the game feeling competitive
A great idea for the next all winners could be: top 2 get a star and lip sync. The winner then gets to give a star out to any other queen and the loser gets the chance to block someone. It forces queens to make alliances and if they want to be seen as nice push for the lip sync win i think
Giving two stars for the talent show(also it shouldve been ep 2 to still have the song ep 1) wouldve change the outcome of the entire season. And having Nuestra Jinkx and Monet choosing the other queens for the top 4 wouldve been amazing too.
I think what they should have done if they wanted a twist was the lipsync winner of the last challenge gets to steal a star as well as earn one (thus gaining 2 stars). This would make the last lip sync more dramatic as Shea would still need to win the lip sync to make the final, Shea making the final would feel more deserved, and, assuming Shea stole from Trinity or Jaida, the math would work out.
I think if they had done something like the Taskmaster points system where each queen gets 8-2 points for their performances in each challenge instead of lls stars
I've been watching your content for a few weeks now and I decided to switch sides - I knew I needed to be part of the percentage that WAS subscribed to you. So. Bam.
Here's a cookie. 🍪 (and a new subscriber. 💞)
the only annoying part of this format was the sudden multiple stars at the end which honestly seemed to only exist to push some queens to the finale
i feel like a twist that might have been more interesting/seem more fair would have been if, on top of earning 1 star if they won the talent show, the queens could earn back the stars they were blocked from winning before. maybe that would have been too complicated to rig but I feel like it would have raised the stakes without seeming like a cop out.
This season is one of my all time favorites on drag race. But, i remember thinking this exact same thing every single time I watch it. What was the point of the ENTIRE challenge, if queens who were not frontrunners (objectively) can get boosted to the finale like that.
Someone should leak the AS7 REUNION!
Agree entirely, as soon as they said 3 stars we all knew they were giving it to Shea. It was so forced.
If they were gonna do a point system they should been throwing points around a lot more. Imagine getting stars for mini challenges, maybe there are hidden stars in the workroom, maybe give the winner of the lip sync an extra star. There were so many ways to make this point system thing more interesting but they chose the most boring route.
Im not mad at this tbh bcs I think everyones knows even them that this was a bad idea after watching it on tv, but the rest of season is so incredible and it's only the first season so it can only be better ❤❤❤❤
I miss this season, so much fun ❤
1:24 the 3 stars shit and the getting 2 but having to give one away drove me nuts.. especially bc Ru never said Raja & Jinx couldnt give them to eachother, cuz i was suprised i didnt do that...but i didnt like the point system at all..
Personally I wished that the stars had decided who got to pick their opponents for an 8 way smack down. The talent show could still have 3 stars and still keep the standings as 1) Monet, 2) Jinkx & Shea, 3) Trinity & Jaida, 4) Raja, Viv and Yvie. Since Monet had the most she picks the first rounds pairings, we watch 4 lipsyncs and four queens head into round two. The four who lost then get given the power to confer and pair up the remaining four, we watch another 2 lipsyncs and then the two finalists go head to head to crown.
“Ruined” I don’t know for me AS7 is still the best All star season to date even if there were a few things I would have changed about format like the top 4 selection process.
I've always thought that a nice challenge concept would be a lip sync smackdown in the middle of the season, but instead of facing each other, the queens would face off against the respective lip sync assassins from each of their winning seasons, like Yvie vs Brook Lynn and Jaida vs Heidi.
I love that idea
in the group challenge and in the talent show jinkx was robbed
They were not told that the talent show was at the end I think Monet talked about this at one point
have you seen next influencer they do a different format with no eliminations and the cast ranks eachother and then that would make sense
Here's my take... I never watched the show for the "storyline" or the competition format... Im in love with the art and performance... So i already looooove the basic premise of AS7 already, watchinh 8 fabulous queens gave em all every week, no one is eleminated, fabulous runways.... And maybe the one critique is, we need more Yvie Oddly lipsynch, just that
that's the thing... if WOW can't entertain us with how they produce the show, then i'd rather just watch the queens perform at their best. i'll happily take an hour long roast (the kennedy honors whatever it was called episode) and laugh my ass off than a severely cut down version within a poorly produced drag race episode.
@@laincoubert7236 unfortunately that's what we got... And that's we are going to consume it anyway.. is it frustrating? Yessss ! But I still enjoy the good anyway.
I feel like for the Variety show they could have had 3 queens go through to the finale based on stars and then choose two winners from the remaining five to lip sync and the lip sync winner joins the finale, regardless of the number of stars?
That would have given them the uncertainty and twist they were after while also not invalidating all the previous challenges?
If there’s ever an all winners season 2, I hope they make a lipsync smackdown challenge where the top 2 queens lipsync their way to the top 2 spot. This challenge would work well with the non elimination format as well as the 8 contestants season. Plus we could get some killer lipsyncs if we see queens such as Kylie, Sasha Velour, Symone, Priyanka, …
Have I watched this video 3 times already? Yes
Will I watch it again? Hell yeah
At least it gave us the iconic Supernova lip sync
i’m pretty sure production does not give the queens an actual list of all the challenges and the order they’re doing them in, they just let the queens know about the challenges that require preparation and planning ahead of time, which is usually just the talent show (i think i’ve heard they also get told to bring extra outfits they could potentially use in a makeover challenge but without telling them who the makeovers will be on except in certain cases like AS4). outside of that the only other information they get in advance is a list of the runway categories (with a very short description or even just a few adjectives for what would be suitable for that category)
got a bit sidetracked there but as far as the queens expecting to start off with the talent show, they just assume it’ll be first based off of past seasons but it’s not like that was ever guaranteed
From the beginning I followed Raja, Jinkx and Jaida... I thought it was horrible what they did by giving the last challenge all three stars because it meant that all the effort was for nothing.
Wouldn’t it have been so much better if it was you win one star and get to steal one, totaling to 2 stars w/ the opportunity to even the plain more
7:54 Kandy didnt perform and Kahana did a cheerleading routine
"positive to a fault" could also describe your channel
Lol
I’m working on it
I know you might not see this, but can you please talk about the Kandy Muse slander this seasom 🙏
I think there are a couple issues with this season that far outweigh Jaidas very fair elimination, her and Shea both had the same amount of wins and the narrative that her not making the finale over Shea being unfair is kinda absurd and groundless
The actual major issues were:
-the fact that the finale meant nothing at all
This is obviously the glaring issue of the season, not that shea winning 3 badges made the season irrelevant, but Jinkx winning the finale that you needed those stars to qualify in the first place is what sucks all the air out of the season and makes the wins of this season irrelevant in hindsight
-the rigged challenge order
It was very blatant to a keen eye’d fan how rigged the season layout was, Jinkx getting her second block and the following episode just happening to be one of the two design challenges that season serves as a lovely example of that
Furthermore, half way through the season, where Yvie has 0 wins, putting in a girl group challenge which is arguably her best bet to earn her first star, and then to unjustifiably give her the win for that episode over Shea/Monet, is another great example
We need to remember that this is the first ever season with a consistent number of contestants through out, and as a result, is the first season where we would ever really come across this riggory. To combat this, the show can offer insight into the next challenge as a mini challenge reward, so that queen now has better knowledge on who is best to block for the next challenge, and can choose whether or not to share that with the potential winner of the challenge, as apose to them just guessing which one of their 7 competitors might do well next episode
This sort of riggory sucks a lot because it makes all the blocks meaningless and void of any weight because we now know the season is being moved and shuffled around as we go
At the end of the day, Jaida and Shea had the same amount of wins, I would totally understand the uproar if Jaida had 3 wins and was blocked for one of them, then it would somewhat make sense, but both on paper had the same amount of wins and whoever made the finale was just a matter of the cookie crumbling, it just so happened to be Shea
The air was sucked out of the season through the season itself being outside of the queens hands, and the finale being ultimately meaningless and inconsequential as a result of ru deciding Jinkx wins at the roast, not because shea got 3 badges in one challenge imo
Shea could’ve won the challenge, got 1 star, not made the finale, and the season/format would’ve felt just as empty and meaningless I feel
I feel like people are forgetting that there was a clear favoritism among the fans for Jinkx even before the season started producers used that and this is the result. She of course deserved her win but for the things she wasn't really good at like lipsyncing and design challenges fans always had excuses like "but she is Jinkx" for me this got tired after a while. I wish I could have seen her win more organically without producers and fans involving this much.
That said....the last 2 winners were the right winners. I don't know about Monet becoming the Queen of All Queens or even Evie in second place... Raja and Jinkx were older and their win in regular seasons (and not in an All Stars) had had HUGE impact on the franchise..Let alone their actual track record on AS7. And no..the final win of a crown should NEVER be based solely on a lip sync 😉
THANK YOU for the entire section about Shea. I said for a long time while the season was airing that producers were constantly undervaluing Shea the entire season. I did a spreadsheet kinda like what Drag Detective does for each season where I judge it on my own, and Shea would have easily qualified for the finale on her own if she was given the stars she should have gotten. All Stars 7 was so much fun to watch, but it was easily one of the most clearly rigged seasons of all time.
i did the spreadsheet thing as well where i assigned scores (instead of ranking) to challenges & runways, and shea was like 7th or 8th overall on mine 😭😭 i promise i don't hate her!!
I just really don’t think they should’ve done a point system at all, there is a world in which they could’ve done it and had a good season that progressed well but I feel like the nature of what drag race is as a franchise makes the fans want the more unexpected progressions where any queen can win or lose, and that’s hard to do when there’s an established point system, everyone can see who will win the game
I think the nicest way to do this twist was to award 3 stars only to the lip sync winner and one star to the lip sync loser. This still makes it "anyone's game" without diminishing the importance of previous episodes too much
The biggest problem with the show is that no matter what the rules are when the producers and Ru have decided on who they intend to be the winner for the season they’ll do whatever is necessary to get them to the final. Dodgy decisions, double sashays, double shantays, a strategically placed chocolate bar, changing how many points a win is worth etc. When the rules can change at any time it doesn’t really matter what they are.
5:42 i thought that they should of did whoever was the top two would earn the stars that they would of earned when they had a blocked win.. that way it was like atleast stars they actually earned
