The huge popularity in the Ford Raptor has proven that Americans want a factory built off-road truck. With such huge demand, #GMC enters this space with the all-new #SierraAT4. It features a 2-inch lift, 33" tall Goodyear all-terrain tires, rancho shocks, a locking rear differential, and a unique front and rear fascia design. It may not look as aggressive as a Raptor, but with an available 6.2L V8 under the hood and a more restrained but still handsome design, is this new #Sierra #AT4 a true Raptor competitor?

Hey guys! So while we can't say if the new Sierra AT4 is actually better than a Raptor at this time, Ford is loaning us the latest 2019 Raptor in the second week of April. We're hoping to line up an AT4 around the same time for a comparison test. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!

GMC Needs someone to refresh that interior, it's so dated that it's a turn off. Especially considering how many other truck makers have made their interiors completely premium and stylish, as opposed to GMC where they've decided to stay with the boring Toy-Like interior.

Best overall video I’ve seen on the AT4. As an AT4 owner, I am very happy with the interior. While I will agree the interior doesn’t have much appearance “wow factor”, it is very comfortable and functional; a great place to be. The infotainment system is very good. I prefer the mechanical buttons and knobs to control infotainment and climate, as opposed to touch controls on the the competitor’s trucks. They are more intuitive, and easier to control while driving. The sound system is much improved in this generation as well. I would like to have adaptive cruise, a panoramic sunroof, and rain-sensing wipers - I would bet GM will add some of this as they tweak the trucks in future model years.

Bob Dearborn I would have preferred more aggressive stock tires. I decided to level my truck, and changed the 20” tires and wheels out for 17” Venomrex wheels and 305-70R17 Ridge Grapplers.Enjoy your new truck.

    • @bobdearborn3130
      @bobdearborn3130 3 года назад

I think I'll go with the 275/18s because they are almost an inch taller than the stock 18 to 65 tires. And then when these are worn out I'm going to go with the Goodyear trail runner because they're still aggressive enough and for the winter and they should be less noisier

I highly doubt GM is trying to compete with the Raptor with the AT4. AT4 is a stock truck with a small lift while the Raptor has purpose built high performance off road suspension. Pro’s for the AT4 is going to be a better ride and handling on the street. Pros for the Raptor is excellent off road capabilities. Cons for the Raptor is poor on road handling but that’s normal for purpose built off road vehicles.
Off road trucks are pointless these days because 90% of truck buyers strictly use it as a commuter car grocery getter.

So I'm in the market for a new truck, and I'm obviously heavily considering the f-150. On the way home from a test drive I passed a gmc dealership and saw they had some of the new models, so I swung around and pulled in. I hadn't really done any research into the new models because I really don't like the new styling. But I'm not going to completely right it off because of that, it could drive great. They only had two 19's, a Denalli with the 6.2 and the AT4 with the 5.3. I knew for a fact I wouldn't get a 6.2, so I drove the AT4. Now like I said, I'd done zero research on these. I asked what the AT4 stood for and the guy told me they got rid of the Z71 package and this is the replacement. Well with that in mind, I drove it. And I really didn't like it. I'd just come off a test drive with the 2.7 ecoboost and this 5.3 liter V8 was extremely disappointing. The interior felt chinzy and poorly done. Overall, The AT4 is definitely off my list. I may go back and look at a regular SLT and see if I like the interior of that any more

The only semi stock vehicle to compare or maybe surpass the raptor is the Dodge Ram runner. I live in Napa California where I see all kinds of exotic vehicles but have yet to see one ram runner? So until they jump em it's not a comparison.

Agreed. This test setup was pretty weak. You can do this trail with most all small SUV/CUV w basic lift kit. What a joke.

MrGmilton not only that, but it seems like more and more that Redline reviews is drinking the marketing and promotional Kool Aid. I guess he didn't get the memo that GM marketing or a hired firm runs these reviews and are going to paint their vehicles, logically so, in the best light. The ONLY thing KOOL about this GMC was its MultiPro tailgate. That I'll give a 10. The rest is parts bin stuff . You'd kill that truck doing a Baja run. Until I see some jumps and whoop Dee doos at 60 MPH, I'll say big fail.

@@MrGmilton the Ram Runner is an add on pre-runner package and yes it does compare to the Raptor in some high-speed off-road scenarios but by no means is it anywhere comparable to the Raptor's on and off-road capabilities...as you know since you own one. If the Ram Runner was built from the ground up it might have a chance but since it's an expensive add-on it can't compete.

Exterior is nice. Interior is blah. GM has forgotten to update/upgrade the interiors of its trucks as well as the ancient 5.3L engine. The 6.2L should be standard in all GM trucks now. I will say that the AT4 is 100x better than Chevy's cheesy Trail Boss. Great review.

Not better than a Raptor. And I don’t think this is a knock against it. Just not meant to compete with the Raptor. I’d actually rather have this personally. But this is more of a competitor to the Rebel and Tundra TRD Pro.

I've spent a significant amount of time on that trail. It's nothing crazy. There are however, side trails that branch off that border patrol uses to get to lookout points. GMC should have had you take it up there. You need significant ground clearance, good tires, and a locker helps.
For those below freaking out about the drop, yes...it is that terrifying, especially when going down the mountain at 30 mph riding the brakes.
The trail does become a whole different animal in the rain and at night though.

Is it complete overkill to buy this as a work truck? I currently drive a 2011 Tundra SR5 and while I've been happy with my Tundra, I'm underwhelmed by Toyota's boring (but dependable) truck. Their mileage is awful comparatively and the interior looks very dated. I saw this AT4 and really loved it. The price is a bit much for a work vehicle but I will also use this as my personal truck. I tow roughly 70% of the time, whether its my work trailer or my double jet ski trailer. My wife and I don't have kids, so we like to travel and explore new areas. I already decided I was going to get a 4x4 this time so we can be more confident on beaches and while I'm towing trailers on customer's land. I may even dive into some light off-roading if I get this truck. One big downside is: I put tons of miles on my truck, especially in summer, I commonly put 600-800 miles per week during summer. Its my busy season and when I'm not working I'm either finding a mountain bike trail, heading to the lake with the skis in tow, hitting the beach, etc. In fall/winter, I'm less busy work wise but thats when I like to travel to ride trails out of state and plan to sleep in the bed of the truck with a camper top on it. This is another big draw for the AT4, I can lay down stretched out in the short box. My wife and I are both under 5'8 so it worked perfectly. The Tundra's bed is only 5'5 so I would need to get creative with the sleeping arrangements. Another reason I want the camper top is to be able to travel with the jet skis in summer and still sleep with A/C. The plan is to get some plywood, cut a hole in it, leave the tailgate down using the plywood as the gate and put a window unit through a whole in the wood, all we need is a camp site with electricity. I decided to wait and make my decision after the 2020 Tundra’s were announced, thankfully they did finally upgrade some stuff inside. I would be getting the Platinum trim so I could have ventilated seats (very helpful in south Texas), push button start, keyless entry and Apple CarPlay. I’m still reserving judgement until I drive the new Tundra, but for the price I feel I’d be getting so much more from the GMC for just $1-$2k more. The biggest concerns are: Will this vehicle be as reliable as the Tundra? Am I just marveling at the sparkly new truck instead of thinking more logically and going for the more “boring but reasonable” Tundra? Any thoughts from someone in a similar position?

I bought one last month and it's amazing truck but in no way on par with a raptor capabilities but in my opinion looks way better which is why I bought one. Also I wanted a v8 and not a twin turbo 6. My complaints are the infotainment system layout is bland and pretty much looks like the last generation Sierra but the seats and leather stitching are amazing. It's all just going to come down to preference just enjoy what buy cause these new trucks are getting super pricey.

The Raptor is a desert runner, this is not. I agree with others, super clickbait title and unnecessary given how comprehensive your reviews are...unless GM paid you to pose that question.
FWIW no one takes half tons off road because they're too big, especially the widebody Raptor. A Ranger, Tacoma or even GM's own Colorado/Canyon twins will eat this truck alive on a trail. This is an FX4 competitor, but aside from the best V8 in the biz it falls way short, especially inside which is tragic given that it was just redesigned.

The raptor is its own class of truck, but not because its better than the others, because its different. The truck is meant for desert racing and going fast off road. It is commonly used in muding and stuff but it wasn't its intended purpose. A Lairat or King Ranch with an offroad package would be a Ford offering that's lot closer to this in terms of offloading capability. The raptor is built completely differently for a different task, and honestly is better compared to a trophy truck than any other pickup.

Funny thing a Toyota Tacoma will out do both in overall off roading. Not as wide. Shorter wheel base and lighter. It won't sink in the mud. The bigger heavier trucks will. I've seen it happen too many times.
