It’s scary how much trucks are these days. Granted you get so much more in a truck today versus 20 years ago but $50,$60,$70,000+ for a pickup truck is hard to swallow.
TestDriveNow Reviews by Auto Critic Steve Hammes I bought my first car in 1992 from my older brother who bought it brand new a few years before. It was a 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat that he bought new for $14,700. Granted trucks have come a long way since then but I think the cheapest F-150 you can get today is over $25k. Big changes over the years.
Ryan Lange For sure! So much profit to be made in trucks that the OEMs keep pushing the envelope in terms of features and pricing. You can even option certain Ford trucks to over $100k now.
@@stevehammes For 45k all you get is a 1500/f150. If you want a 2500hd or 3500hd or f250/f350 diesel which are needed for heavy towing you're going to spend 54-56k just for a base model with barely any features, 62-65k for fully loaded.
I can’t believe you don’t have a million subscribers. It’s hard to see a guy like Doug Demuro with two million plus and you with 60k or so. You are so much more articulate and comprehensive. Even though he is an entertaining guy and I enjoy some of his stuff, his clown like delivery gets a bit old when you want to get a serious take on a vehicle. Keep up the outstanding reviews Steve, you produce stellar reviews and I always look forward to watching.
Having a "better" presentation isn't usually what the masses want. People want easy to digest, fun, even shallow content. Think about all the garbage tv shows which get higher ratings than superior programming.
I thought this truck was ugly when I first saw the reveal, but I saw it in person and I have to admit, as a ford guy, the front looks really nice. The rear still kinda look like a tundra and it's not too good looking but the front is extremely pleasant to look at.
As a GM buyer at heart, I hated the new look at first. But I'm like you...after seeing one in person I like it a lot. The Fords and Dodges still beat GM trucks in interior (unless you have a GMC Denali), but from everything I've watched and read by reviewers, the new GM trucks are beating their competition in actual functionality and driving.
The fenders and right above the fenders just bother me. I hated the new body style when they were first revealed too but they’ve grown on me a little bit. The fenders just make me cringe a little bit though.
Same to me. Saw it for the first time in person last week. It's not as bad as I gave it credit for. Granted, not how I would go about buying an over $50k truck, with a "meh, not bad" mentality. I wouldn't mind renting it.
Just picked up a 2019 tonight. put about 100 miles on it and i averaged 18.3 MPG. This includes the occasional Flooring it to feels DA POWAH!. Love it so far.
This is so far the nicest review I've seen on the new Silverado/Sierra twins. I was waiting for you to mention how this isn't as nice as the Ram on the inside. And what's the hate with hard plastic and auto journalists? Almost every production car, even Bentley and Rolly Royce, has hard plastic somewhere in the interior. Including the new Ram. Some just hide it better than others.
I did drive a top-of-the-line Ram 1500 last week but it wouldn't be fair to compare that to the Trail Boss; the High Country, yes. Thanks for checking out the video. May I call you Eli Manning? ;-)
The only reason I probably noticed the issue with the Silverado feeling weak due to the shift programming (Shifting to 6th quickly for MPG) and the harsher ride was because of coming from a Ram to it. That it's also why I noticed that the real world MPG was so good... He swears that the HEMI is a lot more powerful and would smoke his Silverado because he doesn't run it hard and I imagine a lot of ppl would think the same if they didn't know the specs.
I have zero clue. My Colorado is mostly plastic and I wouldn't want anything else. Easy to clean, cheaper to replace if something goes wrong, durable, and looks fine. Idk why anyone would obsess over having a soft dashboard. Wtf are you doing to feel your dashboard all the time??? 😂
For a lot less money, I bought the WT, SUMMIT WHITE had side steps and bed cover added. The WT has dark grey vinyl seats with fold down center console, rubber floor mats, black painted rear bumper and black painted front end that matches trail boss CHEVROLET cutout on grill front crossbar in black, OEM Red tow hooks and 20" wheels were added to match trail boss look. All in all a great truck for under $40k plus tax. Interior controls will be familiar to Chevy owners, plus infotainment system is compatible with IPHONE and ANDRIOD with hands free calls. Not bad all in all. I like the look and really like the ride, oh yeah, they also made the turning radius much better. It still feels like a truck and that's what I need for work.
If you wait a year you'll get it for less w less depreciation than brand spanking new...just saying. I'll get one in a few years. Just bought my 2015 black ext cab silvy a year ago. Great truck.
I like the way they incorporated diffusers into the front facia for drag reduction at the front tires. The appearance also adds to the aggressive looks.
God blessed me with a 2020 trail boss this week, coming from a 2017 ram I'm so happy. Always been a Chevy guy anyway. I have 2001 tahoe daily driver for 11 years now. She Runs like a top
I just traded in my 2017 ltz for it...went from a 13 duramax to that ltz.....I don't haul to much but I'm a bit worried about the 5.3 power stepping down from the 6.2 having said that going from the duramax to the 6.2 the power wasn't an issue , the feel of driving such a small truck was, hence why I liked the TB when I seen it....whats your take on it speed power wise etc?
I would totally be getting this. I picked up the 2018 Z71 and had the dealer install a 2.25" front level kit and 3" spacer in the rear to keep the factory rake... Also had them put on a set of 33" Nitto Ridgegrapplers, and I then removed the front upper and lower air dam, plus the "chrome mustache" had to go, and installed a Rough Country double row LED lightbar in between the rescue hooks to clear that gap up... And then a month later I saw this new Trail Boss and was like DAMN! That's the truck I should have bought, and would have waited, had I known... At this point I have pretty much made my truck a Trailboss, so I can't justify trading it in on the new one yet, but as much as I like mine, I really like this new model.
That's a darn good looking truck! My dealer gave me an LT Trail Boss as a loaner while they fixed a tinting issue on my '18 Silverado... loved the stance and commanding view from the driver seat. Those side steps are a must too ... they look and feel great.
About the cost: In 1964 I went on a class trip to the New York Worlds Fair and saw the Ford Mustang being introduced. It would cost around $2400. In the 90's I was doing pretty good financially and purchased a home stereo for around $10,000.00. In 2015 I purchased a middle of the road Ford F 150, for around 50K. I have lost touch with the business world being in retirement and sometimes I"m amazed at what the car companies can give the customer for 20K, and then I am amazed at how little you get for 57K. I believe it is all in knowing what your customers wants. If you can even consider a PU truck then you are in bracket that indicates you have and are willing to spend money. The add ons are real money makers and what's another 5K if you are willing to part with 50K. Still GM along with the other manufacturers are willing to gouge their customers. Although honesty is the best policy I was never under the illusion that car companies acted that way. Note that when buying you must set a limit as to what you are willing to spend and don't be afraid to start thousands perhaps even 10K under the asking price.. Do your homework meaning no book values of old and new. You've nothing to loose except your money.
I don't think anything has ever grown on me as much as this new silverado! A couple months ago, I was not a fan....but man has that changed. These trail boss editions are sweet! its the price tag that is hard to swallow.....
Steve as always another excellent review! I’d love to get the trail boss, but the pricing is just nuts! With taxes and registration you are gonna be paying north of 60k easily. I admit the trucks have come a long ways over the years but pricing and decreasing mpg I’m surprised they cost this much still!
I am so glad I found your channel! I subscribed right away! Thank you for your excellent test drive and review of the Chevy Trailboss. I am excited to watch more of your content!
It's built for offroad so it's not going to get the best fuel economy, plus Chevy is the only one who can still build v8 motors that get around 20 miles per gallon
Max tow capacity is not available in the Trail Boss, you need to step up to the LTZ or High Country with the 6.2L v8 and 3.42 axel ratio to get the 12500+ lb towing capacity . On the TB the tail gate is only a power unlock, it then uses gravity to drop itself using dampers to soften it, to close it you have to manually lift it back. The High Country has a true power tailgate that will go up and down at the push of a button. The exhaust does sound good but it’s not a true dual, it’s a single that splits. the corner bumper steps are bigger/deeper across the new Silverado line up, not just on the Trail Boss. Finally You took the time to put this review together and didn’t even mention anything about the new engine management system or that in general the new 2019 Silverado makes mix use of steel and aluminum and is in the area of 400lbs light than the outgoing model.
i have the 2019 LT , i tinted the windows, got the bed liner sprayed on, leveling kit, i love my truck, i'm going to put some good tires on it when the stock ones wear out but i'm keeping the stock chevrolet wheels.
I couldn't afford to pay 50 or 60 thousand for a trail boss so I bot a custom model Silverado for 41 thousand. It doesn't have all the extras and niceties like the trail boss or the LT model has, but it has the things that are most important to me. It has the 5.3 motor with the 3.42 rear end and the toe package. It is for wheel drive with a locking rear diff and it has a great filling ride to it just like the more expensive models do.
I've had a few Silverados as rentals, and they really do park like boats. my biggest gripe with GM products is the use of cheap looking and feeling plastics in cars that are that price range. The trucks from the big 3 can take a few lessons from each other, and come up with something actually worth those prices if it has quality materials inside.
It would be nice if the new truck had automatic locking/unlocking tail gates. It would be like another vehicle door. You can have a secure bed cover that is tougher than a glass window, and have the convenience of automatically locking the tail gate. Other models of trucks, i.e. The Avalanche, had this feature over ten years ago.
I have the 2019 high county 6.2 v8 and it's getting 18.5 mpg combined so the 5.3 should be getting better then 14 I traded a 2018 ltz z71 for the 19 and the 18 was getting 20 mpg with the 5.3 v8
You can't trust the DIC you have to hand conculate. The DIC is usually off by like 2 or 3 mpg, also this truck has mud tires so that alone drops the MPG by at least 1 vs having regular all terrains.
It should also be considered that lots of trucks sold these days double as family haulers (check the sales numbers over the last decade) and the lack of tech/safety features like adaptive cruise and auto brake assist on sportier trims like this Trail Boss, Ram's Rebel and the Ford Raptor is a real bummer. It's leading me to the new GMC AT4, which is more expensive than this Trail Boss but configured the same, the AT4 is $2,000 more. I plan on driving my next truck into the ground, and $2,000 over the course of 20 years is only $100 per year. Hard not to spend that when you're talking about your families safety. I've saved that much money already with having the auto brake assist in my wife's Subaru Outback.
noisy knobby tires?!?! i've switched from cheap coopers and open range tires to goodyear duratrac and i can tell you these duratrac's are about 36516546534 times more quiet! minus point for trying to knock goodyears tires...they are simply put...the best you can get.
Yeah, but good luck with that GM 8 speed transmission! My 2019 Silverado LTZ started with that infamous hard shifting issue at 450 miles! Since GM won't acknowledge the issue, I now have a $60,000 ornament in my driveway. Lessons learned
I would have liked to see GM use K02s instead of Duratracs ... I just a set on my '18 Silverado (stock size, 275/55/20) and the noise difference on the highway is negligible. Most K02 reviews would agree which is why I went with them over the Duratrac; many reviews comment on the road noise of the Duratracs. I noticed the road noise immediately when I took the Trail Boss out as a loaner.
Damn, my 02’ Blazer ZR2 w/ the 4.3 has 300k miles on it, drives like new & looks new. Gets 16mpg in town & off-road. I do love the looks of this truck though. I wanted a 2019 Blazer but it’s really Not a Blazer per say.
I like the look of the chevy fenders without that plastic guard the GMCs have. Cleaner and less cheap looking. Not sure which one has the better front end though.
Did you let the engine break in ? I notice that right out of the dealership, my fuel economy is bad for a a week or 2, but later on, it increases and settles close to the expected average. I've experienced this with Mazda, Toyota, and GM vehicles. I notice that 2 months into driving, my fuel economy usually peaks well above average, and a year into driving the vehicle, it approaches the shown average.
I love this new truck. I have a question. I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss. How can I tell if my truck automatic change from V8 to V4 and to V2 while driving on highway? Anyone please help.
The Trail Boss looks bad ass but my issues are it doesn't compare even close to the updated Rebel interior. The driver seating feels cramped as hell, I'm 6'2 270 and the moment I sat inside I knew what sardines went through, now that backseat is full of room... but I won't be back there.
If GM would get rid of the AFA/DFM, auto stop start nonsense, oh and put a better coating on the chasis, the Silverado would be one of the best trucks ever. AND eliminate the 8 speed transmission.
I have a Toyota Tundra looked at the popular half tons to compare before making a purchase. Went with the Tundra because for me it was the best value for the money with a good reliability record. Chevy and Ford have more features but for me those luxury items are not needed, particularly when price is a consideration. My 19 tundra is well equiped with a strong proven 5.7 v-8 for a low 40's price tag. Tundra gas mileage not the best but saving 15 to 20 thousand on it's price buys a lot of gas sports fans.
Well done. I am considering switching over after 2 decades with Ford. Can you answer a question. There is an upgrade performance package available with air intake and cat back exhaust, what is the net horsepower gain? Thank you, Bill Rogan
Hi, Bill. Thanks for checking out my review. This system offers up to a 7-hp improvement at 5,600 rpm and up to 4 additional pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm compared to the production exhaust system.
Ive loved the look of the silverado 2019 since i saw pictures of it a year ago but ive hated the 2019 camaro the whole time like the truck looks cool the camaro looks like a honda civic
Now if Chevrolet could inherit the GMC Sierra tailgate and the 2021 Tahoe interior, this truck would look even better. I don't like that "Chevrolet" across the tailgate though. I prefer the Bowtie.
I'm on my 2nd Silverado and I have some advice to offer. Forget that V-6 if you think it will give you better gas mileage. I had a 2014 GMC Sierra 4.3; and it gave me the same gas mileage has the 5.3 I now have in a 2017 Silverado LTZ Z71. Second, check the skid plate on this Trail Boss that protects the engine. The skid plate under my engine, even with the Z71 --off road--package, is made of plastic! Shame on GM.
Why mention the ridgeline in a truck discussion? It's not a truck, it's a car with an open-to-the-air trunk. It doesn't even really compete with the colorado.
2019 Ram will replace Chevy as the number two in sales after Ford. Chevy as been the runner up for the last 42 years but that is about change. Oh buy the way I am a Ford guy, but I love the new Ram.
The Ram looks to too finished for me ... I never liked the looks of Dodge,I know the trucks are good quality but, I just bought the 2019 Silverado, and I love it, simple reminiscent of past Chevys Ive owned, and a great truck.
You say that the new Chevy is reminiscent of past Chevys and that is in my opinion the problem with the truck. In particular the dated interior is uninspired and totally backward thinking when compared to the new Ram. unfortunately for Chevy fans after playing second fiddle to Ford for some 42 years Chevy will indeed take number 3 spot behind Ford and Ram. { SORRY}
I thank that you are wrong. Show me the raw numbers for 2018. I thank you will find that it wasn't even close. Also get back with me after the first quarter of 2019 and tell me how Chevy is doing.

This is the first new silverado that looks absolutely awesome in my opinion! I can't wait to trade up!
6.2l needs to be offered on all trim levels.
Need to get the AT4 from GMC
Also the tail gate should be on the silverado too. If they are going to compete with Ford, they will need the tailgate from the GMC trucks.
They do have a 6.2 for this
ltz as well
Yes it is odd you can get the 6.2 in the GMC AT4 but you can't in the Chevrolet Trailboss. Agrivating.

Well, you just said it for me!
i have the 2019 LT , i tinted the windows, got the bed liner sprayed on, leveling kit, i love my truck, i'm going to put some good tires on it when the stock ones wear out but i'm keeping the stock chevrolet wheels.
Truck is nice specially in black or dark grey. I would put a different aggressive bumper on it though, and some big tires.
Your videos are the same, if not better quality than motorweek
Thanks!! Appreciate that!
Brilliant sound quality, my respect
If Chevy creates a Suburban Trail Boss, I’m gonna have a lot less money
B-Ruckus it’s coming ...2020
Or What About A Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss And A Ford Ranger Raptor
Thanks Steve. Solid review as always. I love the way the Trail Boss looks. Question... did the 5.3L V8 seem sluggish?
It would be nice if the new truck had automatic locking/unlocking tail gates. It would be like another vehicle door. You can have a secure bed cover that is tougher than a glass window, and have the convenience of automatically locking the tail gate. Other models of trucks, i.e. The Avalanche, had this feature over ten years ago.
They do, it locks with the key fab
Like said before. You can't open the tailgate without the key fob. So in essence it is a locking tailgate.
Great review! And kudos for removing the steps for offroading... Those and the chin spoilers have no place offroading.
I have the 2019 high county 6.2 v8 and it's getting 18.5 mpg combined so the 5.3 should be getting better then 14 I traded a 2018 ltz z71 for the 19 and the 18 was getting 20 mpg with the 5.3 v8
How do you like it?
You can't trust the DIC you have to hand conculate. The DIC is usually off by like 2 or 3 mpg, also this truck has mud tires so that alone drops the MPG by at least 1 vs having regular all terrains.
I'm doing 20mpg average 60/40 highway city.
The Trail Boss with the lift and chrome delete looks good. The other trims levels not so much. Chevy, please put the 6.2L in this trim.
You sound like you're from MotorWeek haha! Great review!
This is a great time to buy a new Silverado - especially during Chevy's Truck Month!
After my last Chevy ,I don't want any part of this
Good luck, you'll need it
Watcha driving now?
GM should build a suburban 2500 trail boss.
Looks good in this color, hated it when they first revealed it though
noisy knobby tires?!?! i've switched from cheap coopers and open range tires to goodyear duratrac and i can tell you these duratrac's are about 36516546534 times more quiet! minus point for trying to knock goodyears tires...they are simply put...the best you can get.
Definitely getting a 6.2 💪🏻
This Trail Boss looks good. I'm gonna be looking at these next spring.
Yeah, but good luck with that GM 8 speed transmission! My 2019 Silverado LTZ started with that infamous hard shifting issue at 450 miles! Since GM won't acknowledge the issue, I now have a $60,000 ornament in my driveway. Lessons learned
TRD Pro ALL DAY . GOOD REVIEW .
Not going to get mpg doing any off roadiin or idle time... Obviously it's a best case scenario
Great review. My friend has the 2018 4inch elevation.....it rides great. Lots of space in the cab and box. A bit expensive for me.
I like it, and those running boards are dope.
Great video! Mean looking truck! Really loving it.
Thanks!
Only disappointing thing is the gas mileage. In 2018 ALL V8s should be getting average of 25 mpg...at least!
Frank Dawe well only GM v8s get that type of fuel economy.
I know. My '14 Sierra is excellent on gas. You would expect the new truck to be even better, wouldn't you.
Frank you want good gas milage then buy a Prius . its a truck no one except you expects 25 mpg's
it's growing on me but still want the midnight edition
I would have liked to see GM use K02s instead of Duratracs ... I just a set on my '18 Silverado (stock size, 275/55/20) and the noise difference on the highway is negligible. Most K02 reviews would agree which is why I went with them over the Duratrac; many reviews comment on the road noise of the Duratracs. I noticed the road noise immediately when I took the Trail Boss out as a loaner.
Hopefully next year's truck will finally update the infotainment center and outdated controls.
Great review Steve. Do you think the price on this truck is an over reach?
Damn, my 02’ Blazer ZR2 w/ the 4.3 has 300k miles on it, drives like new & looks new. Gets 16mpg in town & off-road. I do love the looks of this truck though. I wanted a 2019 Blazer but it’s really Not a Blazer per say.
Hell yeah that's a great looking machine..😲😯🧐😮!!!
"Rare instances in life where you can't lose" lol. In five years it'll be worth half the value.
Not really
I hope they'll eventually offer the Trail Boss model with the new 3.0L Duramax diesel 6 as an option.
Being a 5'7" person I'm going to need a ladder to get in the cab when I get my Silverado.
Great review buddy!!
The Trail Boss looks bad ass but my issues are it doesn't compare even close to the updated Rebel interior. The driver seating feels cramped as hell, I'm 6'2 270 and the moment I sat inside I knew what sardines went through, now that backseat is full of room... but I won't be back there.
Even the cloth seats on the 2019s are real nice, actually I like them better then the leather ones
i agree
If GM would get rid of the AFA/DFM, auto stop start nonsense, oh and put a better coating on the chasis, the Silverado would be one of the best trucks ever. AND eliminate the 8 speed transmission.
One word.... NICE !!!
Great review!
Thanks, Jason!
Thank you!
Steve my only question is which is the more comfortable ride the Honda Ridgeline or this Chevy Silverado??
Why mention the ridgeline in a truck discussion? It's not a truck, it's a car with an open-to-the-air trunk. It doesn't even really compete with the colorado.
@@JohnSmith-ev1sm shut up!
What was the color of the test unit...north sky blue or shadow gray? Pics on the internet look largely the same depending on angle and lighting.
That is Northsky Blue
The red hooks are also on the reline edition truck !!
Nice review
Good job on the vid
But can it compete with raptor? Chevy should build a truck that can really compete with the raptor!!
You say that the new Chevy is reminiscent of past Chevys and that is in my opinion the problem with the truck. In particular the dated interior is uninspired and totally backward thinking when compared to the new Ram. unfortunately for Chevy fans after playing second fiddle to Ford for some 42 years Chevy will indeed take number 3 spot behind Ford and Ram. { SORRY}
I thank that you are wrong. Show me the raw numbers for 2018. I thank you will find that it wasn't even close. Also get back with me after the first quarter of 2019 and tell me how Chevy is doing.
Was the average mpg any highway or did you happen to do a highway only mpg run?
How long the tailgate will work fine until it breaks down a week a month?
GM= genaric made
Is that msrp Canadian or USD?
