It's not all about Marijuana it's about Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator :s summer of 1969 in Los Angeles as two young people madly in love. That's why he says that my papa used to sing the song. They are his parents. Of course it's all made up by Tobias and never happened but that's all part of the lore.
@@MsTigger79 it's probably double entendre like most of their lyrics, "tickle you internally" could be getting the giggles as well as something more sexual
Tobias has used the phrase "tickle you internally" to specifically mean "sex" for years, particularly while introducing "Jigolo Har Megiddo." Does this mean it isn't a double entendre here to also mean giggles from marijuana? No. But it would be a new take on his use of the phrase.
Funny that you thought it was "Mary-Anna" because this is a trick/tool that Tobias uses extremely well within his songs and lyrics. Creating phrases that sound like one thing but are actually a darker lyrical content. for the perfect example check out the song "Dance Macabre" - it's chorus sounds like he sings "Just wanna be, wanna be with you in the moonlight" but it's actually "Just wanna be, wanna bewitch you in the moonlight". My son and I were sitting so close, we had Tobias nearly in our lap whenever he was on the extended part of the stage on our side. Not to mention, we nearly got roasted during "Year Zero" which you absolutely have to play on here!
Then nuns are called “sisters of sin” and it’s some thing the band started in it’s early days. The nuns would come out during the show and offer satanic communion. The song itself has multiple layers. As other commenters have said it’s a play on marijuana cross since “Mariana” is how the Swedes pronounce marijuana, and Tobias is Swedish. It’s also about Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator. It’s ALSO about a friendship that could’ve been something more, but never went anywhere AND the nostalgia Tobias feels for a previous stage persona “Mary Goore” for his band Repugnant that never took off. The first time I ever saw Ghost live was 9 years ago in a converted skating rink in Oklahoma City on like a Tuesday night. If there were 200 people in the crowd, I'll eat my hat. They've come a long way since then. I met him that night and didn't know it for several years. Just hanging out with the audience about a half hour before the opening band hit the stage. I asked him how much he paid for the outfit (i thought it was just another random fan) and he replied "I paid about $100,000 for all 6 of them". I giggled and snapped a pic and walked away. Several years later, Nergal from Behemoth was asked how much he paid for the bands onstage outfits and he said they were around $50 each depending on which thrift shop they were in. He then said "Not like that dude from Ghost who paid $100,000 for all six of his bands outfit". The same Nergal who posted a pic of him and Tobias in street cloths with the title "If you have Ghosts..." I though the guy told me he paid for 6 replicas of the Papa outfit. Nope, he paid $100,000 for his outfit plus the outfits for the other 5 members in the band at that time...
“Mary On A Cross, Maryona cross, Marijuana Cross”. That’s it! “If you choose to run away with me I will tickle you internally, and I see nothing wrong with that…” He’s talking about the giggles induced by Marijuana. The entire song is dedicated to a woman that doesn’t exist, because he isn’t talking about a person. He’s talking about Marijuana & how much he loves her.

Huge Ghost fan here, you showed up in recommended and didn't let me down, subscribed. This band is worth the discography dig and search. They have a full lore to go with it all. You're reaction is priceless. The chorus can have many different meanings, but Tobias has said in an interview the "go down" is refencing like someone "going down in history," like of course, The Virgin Mary. But it is also this, the name Mary is also a callback to his former Stage presence in another band he was with, he went by the name "Mary Gore." So the song is kinda like a nod to him to his former self and their experience of trying to make it big in a band. If you read the rest of the lyrics it all makes sense with that idea in mind. But Tobias also has a great way of using lyrics to sound like a whole other idea. Hope that gives you a explanation about the song! Glad you enjoyed them and I hope you make the dig on their other music. It doesn't miss! Thank you for this!
I'm bummed I won't be able to afford tickets. I just started listening to Ghost, but I really want to see Amon Amarth. I'd totally make the 3 hour or so drive to South Carolina (the closest stop to me) to see them.
I can't speak to it's actual meaning, but I know what it means to me. It reminds me of my ex Mary Katherine who left me 14 years ago. I have never been fully able to get over her and what she meant to me. She was the second woman in my life I tried to marry and the one I was convinced was my destined one and only. There are so many lines in this song that hit home for me and my relationship with her that I can't hear it without tearing up a bit. "If you choose to run away with me I will tickle you internally." "Your beauty never ever scared me." It's crazy how much music can stir up deep feelings in you.
Your beauty never ever scared me.... best guess I got is that this singer is atypical and is unbothered by what would frighten most people. Or he finds himself so enamored that he is ignoring that what he's looking at it not just ugly, but probably plain bad news. The song is rich with music, lyrical Kung fu. A wide variety of instruments like organ, drums, guitars, effects boards, and the vocal ranges of males and females which contribute their own delights
Yes, Ghost! If you want another live Ghost performance, they have Live from the Ministry which was a promotion for the release of their latest album Impera, and has a few songs from that album. You might also like He Is. For a different band, if you haven't heard Werewolf by Motionless in White or seen the music video, it's awesome. It pays a lot of tribute to Michael Jackson's Thriller.
Rock lives on! Forget all the categories and partitions. This is one of the great grand children of classic rock.Things are supposed to evolve. I was born before rock was and I am happy to be assured that rock will outlive me. No rush on that, you understand.
The song is about the life long love of pot. He's very good at having multiple possible meanings to songs. This one sounds like a song about a person, but ultimately is about weed. In some countries a joint is called a "cross" .... So Mary on a cross is used because it sounds like Marijuana Cross. Many of the lyrics sounds like it's talking about a person, when it's really referencing the weed, such as "We were searching for reasons to play by the rules. But we quickly found It was just for fools. After all the sorrow we'll be riding high. And the truth of the matter is I'll never let you go." .... and sometimes it even appears to be the weed talking about the person, such as, "If you choose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally. And I see nothing wrong with that." .... So yeah, it's basically a love song, about the writers life long admiration for pot. hahaha, how fun.
Its not about pot. Look at his fingers when he sing “I will tickle you internally” Yes, He literally means he will tickle you internally. Also “You go down just like holy Mary” mean to kneel down just like when Saint Mary Magdalene prays… and you know… blows (Mary Magdalene is basically Jesus’s groupie) Its a horny song… Papa Emeritus always been a very funny and horny guy so this suit the band image perfectly. And no, I didn’t make this up… Tobias talk about this in one of his interview podcast.
Pun: Mary on a cross Marijuana grass This is a band where everything can mean a couple of different things. My personal favorite is "I wanna bewitch you" which is pronounced in a way that sounds like "I wanna be with you."
Ghost is amazing, so many different good songs from "he is" to "Spillways" to "Square hammer" Also a suggestion "In Flames - Stay with me" which is a beautifull song and we must take a moment none metal heads dont have that song in their lifes. Or "In Flames - when the world explode ft emilia Feldt" Specially her singing you might enjoy.
As art is open to interpretation, I have searched for the meaning as well. There are a few schools of thought but no absolutely correct interpretation. Tobias Forge the front man has said that there are layers to the lyrics. They could have double or triple meanings. But their intentions of the lyrics are not so clear. If you watch the official lyric video it lends some context with the time and location to entertain the fiction that is their production. I don't recall but there is a calendar date and mentions it's in LA Cali. An interesting choice since they are from Europe. They seem to be worldy in their reach. Maybe the date they chose has some sort of hidden meaning as well. Like an Easter Egg. But to shorten things. The singer is narrating his relationship with drugs. Or perhaps his relationship with a lover, or an ex. Maybe both. Maybe all three. There is room for a lot to be said about the lyrics. I think that the music and the musicianship is what makes this song so great. It feels familiar, it's haunting, which is fitting for a band called ghost with the lead singer playing the character of a dead man. Backed by what the band officially calls "nameless ghouls"
Funny that you’re a trainee opera singer. I work at the Met Opera as a stagehand and my favorite thing to listen to when I’m repairing scenery in our storage area is Ghost. Few weeks ago “Satans Prayer” was blasting and a tour came through. The looks on their faces where indescribable 😂😂
The song implies a story about two people who ascend to rock stardom, and fall prey to temptations that may include occult dabbling and drug use. It mixes sexual and religious imagery, with "going down" simultaneously implying a sexual act (more likely Mary Magdalene than the virgin Mary) and martyrdom for the singer's partner who may have died.

The Yuengling Center is where this was filmed at. It is the Basketball arena for University of South Florida. It has a basketball capacity of around 10k. I loved seeing you realize this is a TikTok meme... I had the reverse. Even though I'm a fan of Ghost I hadn't kept up the last few years, but I heard the clipped part of this song so many times in Instagram Reels I finally had to look it up and was shocked that it was from a band I love!

I can't wait to see these guys again. I first heard them when I went to see my favorite band Volbeat. It was a great show, two totally different shows.
It's kinda just a dirty relationship song between Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator (characters in the Ghost "mythology") You go down like holy Mary refers to kneeling, but holy Mary kneels before the cross/ with her rosary (as a nun), whereas Sister Imperator kneels for.. umm.. a different reason...
You should watch the official lyric video of this song, which is a legit music video in itself to build the lore of the band. You can hear his gorgeous voice better obviously than the live concert, but live is better for the crowd atmosphere :)
It's trippy to me. I've been following this band since the beginning. No one knew who they were. Now I come across Ghost song reactions all the time lol. I've seen them live four times... Honestly, they put on the best live performance! I've been to a lot of rock shows too.
"Year Zero" is a tiktok meme, aside from that and "Mary on a Cross" idk if any other song of theirs is used outside of ghost-tok unfortunately i guess i saw "Rats" being used a few times in rat-tok but i wouldn't say it's trending, it's a great song tho you should hear it
Maggie, if you go back to Ghost's concert at Hellfest, 'nuns' were on stage and part of the show. My recommendation for a follow up is "He Is", which is absolutely beautiful.
Hello. I just recently discovered you through your reaction to Hi Ren & I have been exploring more of your content. Love what I've seen so far. I wanted to make a request... have you ever heard of Yebba? If not, I would absolutely love to see your reaction to her live performance of "My Mind (Live at Sofar)".
@Maggie Reneé Oh, you will love her! Very soulful voice with amazing control & gospel-like runs... "My Mind" is one of the best, most heart-felt live vocal performances I've ever watched! She also has an amazing duet with Clark Beckham (a cover of John Mayer's "Gravity") that will take you to church!
Ever since I heard “Mary on a Cross” I became a fan. Remind me of the rock song my parents would play as a kid. This song just hit the soul. Especially stoners out there. Marijuana cross lol. Wish I could have discovered this on 4/20 so I I could say to the community Happy 4/20 😭😂🌿
So excited to see that you finally found Ghost! Of course we'd like to see more of you reacting to them! Just remember when you're watching them that it's all about the fun (after all, how else to sway millions to worship Satan than through fun music????). IF you don't get it, the band is Satanic, Tobias Forge is not. It's an entire story that is still developing, the lore is (almost) as good as the music!
You go down just like Holy Mary. Mary on a...Mary on a cross. I think this line was written to shock catholics. Ghost's whole brand is to besmirch the church. (I'm a poet and didn't know it) Their art has a theme that they maintain. When they say that line it could be intended to do several things. 1) it could convey a message that Holy Mary was a freak in the bedroom. An obvious blasphemy in the view of clergymenand the leity. The character singing knows something intimate about Mary that we don't. 2) Its a turn of phrase. Maybe he's consuming drugs or alcohol he's saying to the drugs and alcohol "you're about as satisfying as The Virgin Mary Being Crucified" but he's doing it anyway. 3) he's talking about a pineapple express style joint that shotguns three joints at once into your lungs. Mary on a cross. Marijuana cross. Keeping in mind that Marijuana in Sweden is verboten while the rest of their policies have room for progressivism. The song came out in 2022. 4) he could be singing about a love interest. Not necessarily a lover. He may be trying to swoon her or maybe he had her and she got away. But it's obvious to the listener that he is singing to somebody. The first word is WE. So it's not WHAT the song is about, it's WHO the song is about. Bevauze the narrator of the song sings directly to an object of perhaps affection? Maybe anger? Maybe hate? Maybe love?
Maggie Renee As you know, Ghost has been around for awhile. Tobias Forge aka Papa, only original member of Ghost has change lineups of the band. His bandmates are known as "Ghouls". They supposed to unknown, but one of the lineups filed a lawsuit against Tobias for not giving them recognition. Because of the lawsuit, Tobias' identity had to be revealed as Ghouls' names revealed too. Interesting fact is that Ghost has well-known fans (musicians) such as Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl who secretly played as a Ghoul during one concert.
I definitely recommend checking out the studio version of this song, the live recording doesn't do it justice TBH. (Actually just in general Ghost has great live shows but they're almost never recorded very well in my experience.)
"My face when I finally realized..." I so hoped it was to the line "I will tickel you internally" or any of the other double entendre in the song. The song is basicly about... sex and weed. Thats about it.
Best part is it isnt face paint or makeup. Its a mask, which makes more sense when you see that his mouth barely moves at all, yet he still sounds so clear and easy to understand. The mask is just so well made

Just discovered them 2 months ago. Already have 5 albums and tix to Aug 12th Milwaukee!!! 🤟🤟 YES!!! Freaking fantastic band!!!!
Your beauty never ever scared me....
best guess I got is that this singer is atypical and
is unbothered by what would frighten most people.
Their life performances are incredible!! Please react to more of Ghost. I suggest Cirice, He is, Faith, Kaisarion next. Really love your reaction!!
Look at his fingers when he sing “I will tickle you internally”
Yes, He literally means he will tickle you internally.
Also “You go down just like holy Mary” mean to kneel down just like when Saint Mary Magdalene prays…
and you know… blows
(Mary Magdalene is basically Jesus’s groupie)
Its a horny song… Papa Emeritus always been a very funny and horny guy so this suit the band image perfectly.
And no, I didn’t make this up… Tobias talk about this in one of his interview podcast.
It's Def about pot, after every live performance of this song he says Marijuanna at the end lol.
He let you know what the song was about at the end...Marijuana
6:05 - Sometimes, after a long and difficult day at the convent, you just have to rock and roll :)
❤i herd that they going to use this song on the rewaking of Jason Meyers so cool😮❤❤
Pun:
Mary on a cross
Marijuana grass
This is a band where everything can mean a couple of different things.
My personal favorite is "I wanna bewitch you" which is pronounced in a way that sounds like "I wanna be with you."
Ghost is amazing, so many different good songs from "he is" to "Spillways" to "Square hammer"
Also a suggestion "In Flames - Stay with me" which is a beautifull song and we must take a moment none metal heads dont have that song in their lifes. Or "In Flames - when the world explode ft emilia Feldt" Specially her singing you might enjoy.
Went to this concert. One of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Ghost are an amazing live band. Tobias is a true showmen. He knows how to entertain! My family has seen them twice.
As a big Ghost fan, I think it's funny when the responder wonders, for example, about the nun's outfits 😂❤️
No.. it's not a TikTok song....
Wasn't that something to do with the Netflix show stranger things which featured the song on an episode
His joker esque character is the best one so far!
Tobias is smart
This song is top of my most played songs😊
Great reaction there💯
Love the music and the vocals. Its incredible.
This band gets better and better every time
Marry on a Marry on a cross ✝️
Love from India 🇮🇳 ❤
The song implies a story about two people who ascend to rock stardom, and fall prey to temptations that may include occult dabbling and drug use. It mixes sexual and religious imagery, with "going down" simultaneously implying a sexual act (more likely Mary Magdalene than the virgin Mary) and martyrdom for the singer's partner who may have died.
I discovered them through their song Dance Macabre which was often played at a local radio station... The video makes it even better.
I was at that show omg It's so weird seeing myself in a reaction video of offical ghost material! But 100% can confirm the vibe of the video is just how it was irl!! Such a unforgettable night
In at 8:03 on the far right
Oh that's so cool 😂
I just found ghost on accident glad I'm 18 love spillway, year zero, Mary on a cross, call me little sunshine, square hammer rn
@@jazzygrace2730 honestly fair I'm 18 too!:) n all of thoes are certified bangers lol I definitely recommend rats from the pinacle to the pit and deph of Satan's eyes
That was cool, also new for me. I liked his vocals, the whole band was on point, the makeup was cool. 😎 I'd be interested in hearing more from them.
try elizabeth, he is, absolution, spirit, idolatrine, secular haze, rats, witch image, kiss the go goat, life eternal, stand by him, griftwood and spillways. Those are the best songs to start with, then you can go to con clavi con dio, year zero, faith, death knell, monstrance clock and so on
ive been watching Ghost reactions tonight and im so happy that I had no idea they were on tiktok. go me!
Tobias Forge is a master of his craft, and Ghost just keeps getting bigger and bigger. And no, those are not real nuns. LOL
I love this one too, we've seen a lot of good music in our day, and this is it.
Of course they’re real nuns! 😇
The live clip does no justice to seeing them live. Greatest showmen ever
PLEASE have a look for the story of ghost on here it explains a lot of things you have commented on such as the nuns and makeup/masks and the progression of the papas/cardinal copia
The Yuengling Center is where this was filmed at. It is the Basketball arena for University of South Florida. It has a basketball capacity of around 10k. So not a massive stadium crowd but defiantly more than most places. I can also see why the crowd was so young given the location being on the campus.
You can tell the point when she turns from "just listening for the vocals yet jamming" to " *realization* andddd instant fan"
I loved seeing you realize this is a TikTok meme... I had the reverse. Even though I'm a fan of Ghost I hadn't kept up the last few years, but I heard the clipped part of this song so many times in Instagram Reels I finally had to look it up and was shocked that it was from a band I love!
This is the beuty of all music, evryone can take what they want from it, it means something different to everyone, it doesnt matter why or how you get it, so long as you get it..........
I can't wait to see these guys again. I first heard them when I went to see my favorite band Volbeat. It was a great show, two totally different shows.
This songs makes me think of "The Doors" with the organ. Sounds like it's a Hammond. The vibe is very goth feel.
Well, it is meant to be an homage to 60s/70s psychedelic rock
Dance macabre official video. Awesome song. Awesome video.
I only know one of their songs, SQUARE HAMMER, I saw them live at VOODOO FEST, in New Orleans about 8 years ago. I was impressed, great show
You should watch the official lyric video of this song, which is a legit music video in itself to build the lore of the band.
Yes. I love it, and it really pro-woman too.
The song is thought to be about convincing a nun to runaway with him because they have developed feelings for each other
Bruh, when i heard "Its the song from tiktok" i litteraly hit my desk.
"Year Zero" is a tiktok meme, aside from that and "Mary on a Cross" idk if any other song of theirs is used outside of ghost-tok unfortunately
i guess i saw "Rats" being used a few times in rat-tok but i wouldn't say it's trending, it's a great song tho you should hear it
What!?! Tiktok didn't write these songs?? Mind blown 😳
Maggie, if you go back to Ghost's concert at Hellfest, 'nuns' were on stage and part of the show. My recommendation for a follow up is "He Is", which is absolutely beautiful.
You have a beautiful voice as well!! Yes the nuns are a costume in our Ghost lore. They are the sisters of sin
Welcome aboard! I don't think I've heard of Yebba before. So thank you for your comment and suggestion.🤘👍🤗
You are so innocent still. Never lose that wonder for the world, okay?
The tiktok 😭 i died inside.
Hi i am from Germany, i am 57 years old… and i love Ghost ✌️
Keep your day job girl friend.
It just sounds really good! Full stop!
If you ever get to chance to experience them live I recommend you do it
You go down just like Holy Mary.
Mary on a...Mary on a cross.
I think this line was written to shock catholics.
Ghost's whole brand is to besmirch the church. (I'm a poet and didn't know it)
Their art has a theme that they maintain.
Maybe hate? Maybe love?
Good morning sunshine 🌞🌞 this is pretty good band
this is not "from tiktok" Tiktok vampirized this memorable song from the masterclass band GHOST. Respect Papa! f**k Tiktok!
They are so amazing live
Maggie Renee
As you know, Ghost has been around for awhile.
The concert was in Tampa, Florida at the Amalie Arena
"My face when I finally realized..." I so hoped it was to the line "I will tickel you internally" or any of the other double entendre in the song.
The song is basicly about... sex and weed. Thats about it.
Best part is it isnt face paint or makeup. Its a mask, which makes more sense when you see that his mouth barely moves at all, yet he still sounds so clear and easy to understand. The mask is just so well made
i really wanna see people point out how you could hear the ghouls and ghoulettes voices (the instrumentalists)
