It's not all about Marijuana it's about Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator :s summer of 1969 in Los Angeles as two young people madly in love. That's why he says that my papa used to sing the song. They are his parents. Of course it's all made up by Tobias and never happened but that's all part of the lore.
This! The lyric "if you choose to run away with me; I will tickle you internally. And I see nothing wrong with that." CLEARLY not about Marijuana.

Tobias has used the phrase "tickle you internally" to specifically mean "sex" for years, particularly while introducing "Jigolo Har Megiddo." Does this mean it isn't a double entendre here to also mean giggles from marijuana? No. But it would be a new take on his use of the phrase.

Funny that you thought it was "Mary-Anna" because this is a trick/tool that Tobias uses extremely well within his songs and lyrics. Creating phrases that sound like one thing but are actually a darker lyrical content.
for the perfect example check out the song "Dance Macabre" - it's chorus sounds like he sings "Just wanna be, wanna be with you in the moonlight" but it's actually "Just wanna be, wanna bewitch you in the moonlight".
The man is musical, pop producing mastermind.

Swedish people for some reason have a natural ability to come up with ridiculously good melodies. It's very strange. You hear it with everything from AVICII, to In Flames, to Abba to Ghost. And the melodies have a distinct Swedish vibe to it, it's unmistakable.

Ghost is a great band. You should do much more of them. "Cirice" "He Is" "Spillways" "Watcher In The Sky" and "Respite On The Spital Fields" are great songs to start with.
"He is" should fit this channel, really beautiful song indeed.

@@christophersims3319 I would not call it their worst song, but that it's becoming their mainstream breakthrough is akin to Creep being Radiohead's most famous song.
Tobias' voice has improved with each successive album. He didn't even intend to be the band's lead singer when he created the project but did it anyway. His dedication to his craft is noticeable.

I took my son to see them in September, and I have been hooked ever since! Once I realized "Mary on a Cross" is kinda dirty, it became my favorite! I am, of course, a child of the 70's and mostly 80's and LOVED Tobias Forge's take on actual rock music. My son and I were sitting so close, we had Tobias nearly in our lap whenever he was on the extended part of the stage on our side. Not to mention, we nearly got roasted during "Year Zero" which you absolutely have to play on here!
The best band in last 20 years. brought back 70/80s rock! on a side note; their Impera album won best metal album at the American music awards

You should try "Square Hammer", also by ghost. And then after that, do Violet Orlandi's cover of it. Both the original and the cover are awesome!

The entire song is dedicated to a woman that doesn’t exist, because he isn’t talking about a person. He’s talking about Marijuana & how much he loves her.

Welcome to the weird world of Ghost. They're one of the best bands out there musically. The nuns are called the Sister of Sins. They used to have nuns go into the front of the crowds giving Communion. So now the crowd dresses either like nuns or all 6 variations of Papa, or the Nameless Ghouls or Ghoulettes.
I'm huge sucker for big vocal harmonies, especially in choruses and even moreso for outros, so this song really hits for me.
Huge Ghost fan here, you showed up in recommended and didn't let me down, subscribed. This band is worth the discography dig and search. They have a full lore to go with it all. You're reaction is priceless. The chorus can have many different meanings, but Tobias has said in an interview the "go down" is refencing like someone "going down in history," like of course, The Virgin Mary. But it is also this, the name Mary is also a callback to his former Stage presence in another band he was with, he went by the name "Mary Gore." So the song is kinda like a nod to him to his former self and their experience of trying to make it big in a band. If you read the rest of the lyrics it all makes sense with that idea in mind. But Tobias also has a great way of using lyrics to sound like a whole other idea. Hope that gives you a explanation about the song! That's a mask actually. It got me too first time I saw him. Amazing that he can sing so well in it.
Tobias actually said in in an interview I saw that KISS was a big influence on him when he was very young. His older brother bought the KISS Love Gun album and Tobias loved it so much that his brother told him he could have it and that pretty much set him on a path to where he wanted to be a rock star.
I love that you liked his vocals. But he does not have make up on its a full face mask. So that makes his vocal range even more impressive that he can hit those notes while wearing a mask
I love this song! I found it through tiktok myself. The lyrics have many layers that need to be pulled back to find the true meaning. Similar to the story of the band itself. It's a very interesting rabbit hole to jump down.

I can't speak to it's actual meaning, but I know what it means to me. It reminds me of my ex Mary Katherine who left me 14 years ago. I have never been fully able to get over her and what she meant to me. She was the second woman in my life I tried to marry and the one I was convinced was my destined one and only. There are so many lines in this song that hit home for me and my relationship with her that I can't hear it without tearing up a bit. "If you choose to run away with me I will tickle you internally." "Your beauty never ever scared me." It's crazy how much music can stir up deep feelings in you.
Going to see them on their next tour with Amon Amarth!! They put on such a good live show.

Ghost is a great band. The songs cover quite a range of styles but still they somehow remain in the same domain sound wise. It is also the first time I find myself really enjoying the lyrics - not so much for the quality but rather what is the meaning behind them.
Then nuns are called “sisters of sin” and it’s some thing the band started in it’s early days. The nuns would come out during the show and offer satanic communion.
The song itself has multiple layers. As other commenters have said it’s a play on marijuana cross since “Mariana” is how the Swedes pronounce marijuana, and Tobias is Swedish. It’s also about Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator. It’s ALSO about a friendship that could’ve been something more, but never went anywhere AND the nostalgia Tobias feels for a previous stage persona “Mary Goore” for his band Repugnant that never took off. (He explicitly confirmed the last two in a recent interview.)

Yes, Ghost! If you want another live Ghost performance, they have Live from the Ministry which was a promotion for the release of their latest album Impera, and has a few songs from that album. You might also like He Is.
For a different band, if you haven't heard Werewolf by Motionless in White or seen the music video, it's awesome. It pays a lot of tribute to Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Funny that you’re a trainee opera singer. I work at the Met Opera as a stagehand and my favorite thing to listen to when I’m repairing scenery in our storage area is Ghost. Few weeks ago “Satans Prayer” was blasting and a tour came through. The looks on their faces where indescribable 😂😂

Ghost are an amazing live band. Tobias is a true showmen. He knows how to entertain! My family has seen them twice.
The first time I ever saw Ghost live was 9 years ago in a converted skating rink in Oklahoma City on like a Tuesday night. If there were 200 people in the crowd, I'll eat my hat. They've come a long way since then. I met him that night and didn't know it for several years. Just hanging out with the audience about a half hour before the opening band hit the stage. I asked him how much he paid for the outfit (i thought it was just another random fan) and he replied "I paid about $100,000 for all 6 of them". I giggled and snapped a pic and walked away. Several years later, Nergal from Behemoth was asked how much he paid for the bands onstage outfits and he said they were around $50 each depending on which thrift shop they were in. He then said "Not like that dude from Ghost who paid $100,000 for all six of his bands outfit". The same Nergal who posted a pic of him and Tobias in street cloths with the title "If you have Ghosts..." I though the guy told me he paid for 6 replicas of the Papa outfit. Nope, he paid $100,000 for his outfit plus the outfits for the other 5 members in the band at that time...
That was cool, also new for me. I liked his vocals, the whole band was on point, the makeup was cool. 😎 I'd be interested in hearing more from them.

The song implies a story about two people who ascend to rock stardom, and fall prey to temptations that may include occult dabbling and drug use. It mixes sexual and religious imagery, with "going down" simultaneously implying a sexual act (more likely Mary Magdalene than the virgin Mary) and martyrdom for the singer's partner who may have died.
If you ever get to chance to experience them live I recommend you do it

It's trippy to me. I've been following this band since the beginning. No one knew who they were. Now I come across Ghost song reactions all the time lol. I've seen them live four times... Honestly, they put on the best live performance! I've been to a lot of rock shows too.

You should watch the official lyric video of this song, which is a legit music video in itself to build the lore of the band. You can hear his gorgeous voice better obviously than the live concert, but live is better for the crowd atmosphere :)

The Yuengling Center is where this was filmed at. It is the Basketball arena for University of South Florida. It has a basketball capacity of around 10k. So not a massive stadium crowd but defiantly more than most places. I can also see why the crowd was so young given the location being on the campus.

The song is about the life long love of pot. He's very good at having multiple possible meanings to songs. This one sounds like a song about a person, but ultimately is about weed. In some countries a joint is called a "cross" .... So Mary on a cross is used because it sounds like Marijuana Cross. Many of the lyrics sounds like it's talking about a person, when it's really referencing the weed, such as "We were searching for reasons to play by the rules. But we quickly found It was just for fools. After all the sorrow we'll be riding high. And the truth of the matter is I'll never let you go." .... and sometimes it even appears to be the weed talking about the person, such as, "If you choose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally. And I see nothing wrong with that." .... So yeah, it's basically a love song, about the writers life long admiration for pot. hahaha, how fun.

As you know, Ghost has been around for awhile. Tobias Forge aka Papa, only original member of Ghost has change lineups of the band. His bandmates are known as "Ghouls". They supposed to unknown, but one of the lineups filed a lawsuit against Tobias for not giving them recognition. Because of the lawsuit, Tobias' identity had to be revealed as Ghouls' names revealed too. Interesting fact is that Ghost has well-known fans (musicians) such as Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl who secretly played as a Ghoul during one concert.
"Year Zero" is a tiktok meme, aside from that and "Mary on a Cross" idk if any other song of theirs is used outside of ghost-tok unfortunately
i guess i saw "Rats" being used a few times in rat-tok but i wouldn't say it's trending, it's a great song tho you should hear it
Best part is it isnt face paint or makeup. Its a mask, which makes more sense when you see that his mouth barely moves at all, yet he still sounds so clear and easy to understand. The mask is just so well made

Maggie, if you go back to Ghost's concert at Hellfest, 'nuns' were on stage and part of the show. My recommendation for a follow up is "He Is", which is absolutely beautiful.

IF you don't get it, the band is Satanic, Tobias Forge is not. It's an entire story that is still developing, the lore is (almost) as good as the music!
As art is open to interpretation, I have searched for the meaning as well. There are a few schools of thought but no absolutely correct interpretation.
Tobias Forge the front man has said that there are layers to the lyrics. They could have double or triple meanings. But their intentions of the lyrics are not so clear.
If you watch the official lyric video it lends some context with the time and location to entertain the fiction that is their production. I don't recall but there is a calendar date and mentions it's in LA Cali. An interesting choice since they are from Europe. They seem to be worldy in their reach. Maybe the date they chose has some sort of hidden meaning as well. Like an Easter Egg.
But to shorten things. The singer is narrating his relationship with drugs. Or perhaps his relationship with a lover, or an ex. Maybe both. Maybe all three.
There is room for a lot to be said about the lyrics. I think that the music and the musicianship is what makes this song so great. It feels familiar, it's haunting, which is fitting for a band called ghost with the lead singer playing the character of a dead man. Backed by what the band officially calls "nameless ghouls"
