Played through this game for the first time a couple of days ago! My chosen type was Flying - a type that I simply hadn’t given much of a chance before - and I immediately defaulted to gimmicky Johto-style teambuilding. My initial squad consisted of just two Vivillon and a Doduo, and even when I got the chance to use six members both my Dodrio and the butterfly sisters stayed aboard - one Vivillon eventually became a Compound-Eyes Sleep Powder user, while the other became a Quiver Dance offensive type. Leaning into that oft-condemned duplicate gimmick actually ended up being really fun! This game was very enjoyable, and I’d 100% recommend it to folks who haven’t given it a try (and are ok with a bit of technological scuff).

I decided to give this game a try as a ghost type gym leader and it's already a joy. I play mostly during the night and found a few good ghost types quickly, such as Golett and Dhelmise, and even some decent dark types that can learn my signature move, such as Zorua. My ace and starter is a female Misdreavus named Mira (usually alongside Smoke the Gastly, aka "Smoke and Mirrors"). Edit: Wow, this game is surprisingly difficult! Still fun, just harder than expected!
I played this game as a fighting gym a while ago with the team of Lucario, Machamp( replaced by gallade in the second half of the game) , Komo-o, Bisharp, Haxorus, and Infernape.
Something that has never been used in a pokemon game: Gym leaders using pokemon that have egg moves. It's a tiny change, but that alongside the signature TM, that could change the battle. Imagine Brock's Onix knowing Harden, Rock Throw, Bide, and Flail. That changes things. And imagine if terrastilization stays (it won't). Imagine a rematch with Brock with a Dragon Terra Type Steelix that knows Dragon Breath, Dragon Tail, and Breaking Swipe.
While I don't mind it for rematches (and in fact, would absolutely welcome it), I, even though I'm a pokéboomer who played this stuff for 25 years, really would try to stay away from making the main game needlessly difficult. Imo, gen 4/5 had a very good blend of difficulty without just being braindead gen 1-3 that just raised the level caps to either make you grind or be challenging for a first walkthrough. Imo, the first playthrough for me would probably be perfect at platinum-level difficulty and imo the rematch can Bane-on-Batman-break your back for all I care. Mikey imo had a valid point - the E4 in BSP having fully competitive hidden ability-item-IV/EV-whatever stuff while you had next to no way to raise your pokés like that (when the series' motto was supposed to be to beat the league with your babies) was stupid, and just emphasized the stupid new friendship/affection thing.
I’m glad you picked fighting. It’s my favorite typing and it seems like every other type is picked before this one. Like dude there’s so many insane fighting types. Machamp has 4 arms. Gallade has blade arms. Lucario is Lucario. Blaziken. Medicham. Hawlucha. Marshadow. Keldeo. Like 85% of fighting types are instantly recognizable badass iconic Pokémon.
I also played this game as a Fighting type gym leader, with the following final team: -Hitmontop : Very balanced, Fake out and Close combat are very useful along with Intimidate -Golem : Very bulky, can set up Stealth rocks and overall great check to Flying types -Chestnaught : Suprinsigly the savior of this let’s play, with the Leech seed Spiky shield stall to save some tricky battles -Machamp : Globally the weakest member of the team, but still a heavy hitter -Emboar : My favorite pokémon, so it had to be there, I loved him so much -Kommo-O : Such an underrated pokémon, and definitely the MVP of the team with the Dragon dance sweeps
Chesnaught being the saviour made me chuckle because it reminded me of how Chespin gaining the fighting type at that point in the game was probably the biggest type gain backfire I ever had seen in pokémon starters, since the level says you get it after gym 5, and the gyms left are... psychic, fairy and ice, with E4 members being a dragon type, fire type, water (dominate yay) and a steel type... with a steel/fairy type, a steel/bug type and a steel/ghost type, making the fighting type worthless... and the champ has a flying type, an ice type, a ghost type, a dragon type, and a fairy mega. I love Chespin and its line, but wow x/y is brutal to Chesnaught.
Honestly, with pixel art, I immediately think of pre-gen 6 and don't even think about the fact that Gengar got cursed body in gen... 7? I think and beyond. So I totally understand the blind spot to that, especially when you're commentating while playing.
I also chose fighting type. Makes a lot of the game pretty easy since the evil gang is almost entirely dark type. I even managed to beat that trainer with the level 75 Tyranitar being like 40 levels under because of Tyranitar's 4 time weakness and gained a huge amount of XP. And also speaking of huge amounts of XP, the Blisseys of the training girl are weak to fighting too so even that is something that fighting type in this game makes easier.
I picked Ghost and named my character Sou-Lo, i found out the hard way to avoid trainers until had something that wasn't a ghost type move. At least I enjoyed the battle where a Tyranitar only had a normal type move.
Good thing you stop there. That Hiker Paul comes back to the gym and trained his pokemon to level 100 and sometimes Edgar will show up to challenge you for a badge.
I did a steel type gym leader run and found a kommo-o, the strategy was kommo-o clangourus soul, tank hit and then close combat, thank goodness for blissey exp training

Good job PM7 and from now on, you'll be more than just a side character to M&JTV in my eyes (I might even like your content a bit more than his from now on, tehehe)! P.S. Heracross is wayy better than Machamp in my veteran opinion any & all day long (hahaha)!!
I tried this too, and being a Ghost Gym leader is... not as easy as a fighting type one. Especially if you walk unprepared into the evil gang, with all their Dark mon... But did you know, you may take non gym type mon with you as long as you are outside the gym. That roggnrola I found at the beginning was SUPER helpful thanks to this.
I love the idea.... just that it's off about one thing.... Gym leaders are meant to be beaten.... but the point is HOW they are beaten.... they are meant to be a challenge but also a training opportunity with the challenger learning HOW to beat them. After all, even after having a higher level, they often limit their moves quite a bit and use only a certain amount of Pokemon....
I would love to give Ground types some love and become the third Ground gym leader. I just really hope I can get Trapinch as a starter, Flygon is my absolute favorite pokemon of all time. If I can get some other favorites like Golurk and Gliscor, or even my lonely boy Marowak, I'd be so happy.
Gligar is a flying type starter choice, golett is in the cavern of knowledge alongside the regional aron, and trapinch can be found in the badlands but there's no cubone in this game
While I understand that ground and steel are strong types and thus constantly get chosen for strong trainers like E4, champs, evil team stuff etc., it's actually crazy that aside from the way worse poison, steel and ground only ever got two gym leader slots. Just like I hope the next E4 are fairy, electric, normal and grass (the only 4 types left, and all but fairy having a ton of representation in gym leaders ffs) I hope the less-represented gym leader types get some love. So... no water, electric, grass, rock and stuff, but like dark, flying, steel, ground, poison, and stuff.
Same here! I started as a Ghost Type gym leader and I used Murkrow/Honchkrow for a little bit, but after getting a Honedge that had Aerial Ace, I had to put Bauble back in the box. She's still a good mon and I love her, but she's not on the gym team. I do take her for adventures sometimes though!
I was trying to get a gallade because my scrafty just wasn't cutting it any more(it died in almost every battle) but I couldn't find a dusk stone and I didn't wanna use two of the same pokemon so I just kept the scrafty
This looks like a fun game! If I were a gym leader I would specialize in fairy types. My team would be: Gardevoir (Ace) Sylveon Primarina Altaria Bellossom Carbink My signature move would be Moonblast.
I played that game as well quite a while ago, and I was obsessed with being a bug type gym leader. And I really had ALL bug types. Beedrill laid the ground work with Toxic Spixes, Fell Stinger and Twin Needle, Vocarona, Vivillion and Beautifly swept with Quiver Dance, Heracross slashed with Swordsdance and Yanmega killed with Ancient Power. I was so goddamn proud of that time but I had such a hard time picking my starter between Larvesta and Scyther.
Haha, he calls it rye-olu Also, he really needs a funny character to do his sponsorship segments, because it's so much more entertaining I mean, there's still at least a dozen other evil teams
Hey, I found a Shiny Deerling last night at work and I only noticed the pink flower because you shared your failure in catching one back when the games (Violet and Scarlet) came out. Also, the subscriber shiny luck, of course.

While I understand that ground and steel are strong types and thus constantly get chosen for strong trainers like E4, champs, evil team stuff etc., it's actually crazy that aside from the way worse poison, steel and ground only ever got two gym leader slots.
Just like I hope the next E4 are fairy, electric, normal and grass (the only 4 types left, and all but fairy having a ton of representation in gym leaders ffs)
I hope the less-represented gym leader types get some love.
So... no water, electric, grass, rock and stuff, but like dark, flying, steel, ground, poison, and stuff.
15:06 "Well, well, well."
This was fun! I was a water type gym leader :) I didn't want to cheat and have pokemon that just learned the move, and had them all be water type
Same with my fighting gym
@@Jacob_Da_Goatyou could have just bought a dawn stone
That Tyranitar was certainly a challenge when I faced it, but it was no match for my Ice types!
This video was REALLY well put together!!
Pm7: This Hitmonchan is Fighting-Ghost type?!
Marshadow: Am I a joke to you?
Always a great day when either of the John Michael duo uploads :)
This looks like a fun game! If I were a gym leader I would specialize in fairy types. My team would be:
Gardevoir (Ace)
Sylveon
Primarina
Altaria
Bellossom
Carbink
My signature move would be Moonblast.
Like 20 seconds in and I can tell this will be a good vid because of riolu’s nickname 😂
Guys can we talk about how good John is 😊 he makes Mikey's videos more than his channel's ❤ he is a really great friend
Fighting is a very good choice! I am happy to see you live your childhood dreams 😊
New PM7 upload means today is a good day!😊
When the world is filled exclusively with door-less buildings in about a year, we’ll all know why
Hi Tyler, nice editing! Love your edits
but where is the download?
Nintendo strikes anything with links to mods or roms of their games.
@@tOGGLEwAFFLES Oh so that's why none of the videos to mods have links
That Dragon/Steel Aron was a death sentence for my Poison gym, until I added a Gastly with curse to my team
keep up the great work pm7 you always make the best videos
Fighting is also my favorite type, I’m working on a fighting type gym diorama using my wrestling action figures and Pokémon battle figures
Sequel:
I became a shiny type Gym Leader
I played that game as well quite a while ago, and I was obsessed with being a bug type gym leader. And I really had ALL bug types. Beedrill laid the ground work with Toxic Spixes, Fell Stinger and Twin Needle, Vocarona, Vivillion and Beautifly swept with Quiver Dance, Heracross slashed with Swordsdance and Yanmega killed with Ancient Power.
I was so goddamn proud of that time but I had such a hard time picking my starter between Larvesta and Scyther.
I love the name Anubis for Riolu
That's what I named my Riolu in Black 2, lol
@@kirbystarwariorcool
It’s the name I use for any Riolu/Lucario I use so cool to see I’m not the only one
As a representative of the Official Electivire fan club, we humbly thank you for including our beloved Pokémon on your fighting gym
Being a gym leader has always been a dream to me
Haha, he calls it rye-olu
Also, he really needs a funny character to do his sponsorship segments, because it's so much more entertaining
I mean, there's still at least a dozen other evil teams
0:05 what game is that i want to be a pokemon.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Series
Love how John slowly changed in a gi
They should have a frog gym leader
I've been listening to a lot of The Lonely Island recently so the "Uh Oh" from Shy Ronnie Part 2 at 4:42 caught me SUPER off guard 💀
Looks like an amazing gym, would love to be a normal type gym leader
I really want to download this and give poison types the gym they've deserved for nearly 25 years!
Electivire is my favourite Pokémon, anybody else like it?
Got to appreciate the LaDainian Tomlinson reference lots of respect.
Such an awesome fan game concept, I'll have to try it out!
what's the music that plays at 18:46
I would love to play this!!
Keep up the good work!
When you a Fire Emblem fan and start hearing "The scions dance in Purgatory". I see you have good taste, fellow fan of Fire Emblem.
Great video, John! Immediately motivated me (after watching this vid ofc) to play it myself.
To editor. Please turn down the sound effects. It's way too loud compared to John and it makes me have to turn my volume up and down.
"That's not how I thought this would end" 🤣
I want a chance to be a Pokemon Coordinator.
Rhydon- im not afraid of that
Am I the only person who thought he was going to say RHYDON DEEZ NUTS? If i am that would be prrreetty embarrassing
How do you get this Pokémon game
Pc
Or a bit of coding

Galarian Onix looks fire 🔥
Frist
i got there before you
@@rizzly_bear_420no your not
Nvm you are
This video is so good... I still rewatch it once a week
Fighting types are my favorites too. I always hunt every fighting shiny in the new games.
Hold on just hold the McNuggets on John is a freaking black belt?!?!?
Did anyone else notice
At 2:37min of the video, while John was catching Elekid ,his Riolu turned int a Elekid named sparky😅😅😅😂😂😂
Now it makes sense why he makes tier lists on punting pokemon
3:43 is that mat pat I see
Hey, I found a Shiny Deerling last night at work and I only noticed the pink flower because you shared your failure in catching one back when the games (Violet and Scarlet) came out. Also, the subscriber shiny luck, of course.
I just looked up the Moveset on Bulbapedia and Tyranitar can’t actually learn Brave Bird. That one trainer near the end was hacking.
What's actually interesting is if you lose that final battle with Edgar where the loser is kicked out of the city, you actually get a game over ending lol
