  • @SV-X
    @SV-X 3 месяца назад +7

    My favorite least item to grind is. . . none of them, because fuck that shit.
    After I had 100% the game and went into NG+, I used CE scripts to mass gib drops tied to RNG and/or grind. If I had already done something once, then that means I can do it again. If that activity isn't fun or meaningful to me, I am not going to go do it again because my time is limited and I respect it.
    I have always been of the opinion that one of the Soul's series weaker points is in the gate of entry of PvP due to the time commitment for making and experimenting with new builds in different level brackets. Players interested in PvP (especially those with a single character in a level bracket where PvP is scarce) must create a new character, progress through the game, find the necessary upgrade materials, etc etc etc just to dabble in it and see if they like it or not. This is doubly true in Elden Ring which is a much larger game with a million consumables locked to grind, crafting cook books, or both. Realistically, the only current way to explore different builds in Elden Ring in a timely manner is to either use duplication exploits or straight up cheat--which is a damn shame considering the diversity of viable builds in this game.
    Personally, I do not want anything to be gate-kept by grind, exploits, or cheating. Whether it is the ability to have max golem arrows or the ability to make new PvP builds on the fly, I want these to be made accessible to all players from the game itself. That is why I advocate for mechanics such as free and unlimited respecs, storing rune levels in respec to temporarily de-level so that players can seamlessly switch level brackets, and rune shops where players can trade in runes for some of the more exquisite items such as starlight shards.
    If Elden Ring lowers the barrier of entry for PvP by simply removing the grind and tedium, not only will it help keep the game alive, I am willing to bet that a new influx of players, players that have never even given PvP a second thought, will be injected into the PvP scene simply for the fact that they do not have to spend a million more hours just to try the PvP.

    • @emotionaljonxvx
      @emotionaljonxvx  3 месяца назад +3

      Very well said! The barrier to entry for PVP in these games is massive, near MMO levels in some cases. If they were willing to be more accommodating with that process I'm sure they could get all sorts of new PVPers into the game.
      Then again, they might not care about that at all. It's tough to tell with From sometimes.

    • @SV-X
      @SV-X 3 месяца назад

      @@emotionaljonxvx You're right. It is hard to tell. On one hand, there has been a lot of plain seemingly anti-PvP anti-Invasion design choices, on the other, Elden Ring has had massive PvP-only balance changes and a poise rework which seemed to borrow a lot of ideas from focused community feedback, like the poise rework that players like Gabri proposed a while back. Whether changes like that were caused by actual feed back or are mere coincidences, we will never know.
      All that is left to do now is make collective feedback that is focused, and hope and cope for the best. Lol

    Thoughts on just having items used in multiplayer not "count"? In other words you farm for your first however many consumables you want equipped and then you can pvp or co-op and use whatever you bring, but your stock resets once you return to your own world. If co-opers don't drop their runes on death, I don't see why item usage as a phantom should be counted either.

    I never really got why some items like starlight shards are limited in quantity. Being a sorcerer, if I am helping someone stomp through a dungeon in co-op, odds are I am all out of magic by the time we get to the boss and thus kinda not able to do much. Having the ability to craft alternative fp restoratives like starlight shards would do a world of good. Not to mention how amazing it would be in early game to have that sort of item to readily make use of. I remember many times running out of all fp and just hoping, hoping there is a site of grace nearby.
    Beyond that, there sure are some items that are tedious to gather materials for. With several recipes for very useful items not existing for some reason or another. Also, why are there several items that boost physical attack power but not one consumable in sight to boost magic attack power? Sure, there are ways to do that, but it's odd physical attack power boost consumables are a dime a dozen when there is not a single one for magic attack power.

      I'm still not sure why they decided against any kind of passive fp regeneration for elden ring anyway. Most of the other souls games have them, and an open world seems like the most fitting place for it. You get plenty of flasks and killing groups refills them anyway, and its not like it restricts healing since they give you a loads of healing consumables. Running out of fp and and only having the fp on death items is pretty annoying, especially considering the sacrificial axe is pretty stinky as a weapon.
      And yeah having no way to boost magic or damage other than physical with consumables seemed a little strange to me since you get all the defence ones.

    • @SV-X
      @SV-X 3 месяца назад

      @@garchamayne4254 I was going to correct you, but you're actually right lol. Ds2 has the Crown of the Old Iron King which regenerates spell uses, Ds3 has the crystal infusion which regenerates FP. It is kinda weird that ER, of all the Souls games, would have no way to passively regenerate FP.
      On a related note, I don't know why Elden Ring locks swapping spells to bonfires/graces when the spell slots aren't tied to a stat, and when players can hard-swap literally anything else. I think it has no place in ER personally.

    100% agree. Especially about the bell bearings. Such a good concept, why not use it to its fullest extent? Fromsoft is at a point in their career where ignoring these types of QoL features in their subsequent titles is pretty much inexcusable.
    Frankly I think a UI overhaul is in order, but I would settle for some basic features being included - namely, some type of dialogue transcription log, or at least _some_ way to keep better track of important NPC interactions.
    There is something to be said for the minimalist design Fromsoft opts for. In a way it does make the NPC interactions more meaningful. That said, this is a video game. There is already a UI menu, and there's no getting around that - it is a necessary feature. I don't think adding a tab with a list of important NPCs and their dialogue would detract from the experience. If anything it will enhance it by not forcing people to take physical notes or, in my case, hitting the Screen Record button at the beginning and end of every NPC interaction.
    If my cat jumps on me and knocks the controller out of my hand while an important NPC is talking and I miss something, an entire questline is potentially fucked unless I resort to a wiki. This does not enhance the experience imo, and any benefits gained from the minimalist approach are outweighed by the possibility of this happening. And it may not be a very common experience, but I'd argue that even one instance of something like this happening could be enough to put a sour taste in ones mouth. All I know is that there were multiple times during my initial playthrough where I really would have liked to easily review past NPC dialogue.
    Anyway that's the end of my rambling.

    Recently, I started a mage character for the first time, for the DLC. I’ve only done enough invasions to satisfy varre and farm the bird to top off my runes.
    Boy, what a difference it makes playing the game as a mage and using consumables only in PVE. Just trying to beat the game as fast as possible all by myself with my silver tear OC that’s not min-maxed to hell. I’m having way more fun all by myself, having a near infinite mana pool with cool spells that refills every time I rest at a grace. The grind is nearly gone. The scarce materials are perfectly enough to rot pot a tricky boss instead of probably miss a player who has 99 boluses anyway.

    it IS a bad system and why consumes are often left by the wayside in favor of just straight AoW or spells. FFS, Cragblade is a dramatically better buff in most cases over resin, because of % scaling over flat damage and because of the added poise damage. Not to mention the actual GOOD consumes that could compete with spells like Exalted flesh REQUIRE RARE MATERIAL THAT DO NOT RESPAWN AT ALL. In addition, one of elden ring's best addition in terms of consumes was, in my opinion, the gold fowl-foot, because soulslike NEVER had a consumable that boosted souls/runes and it's also just much, much easier to time a consumable before a boss dies compared to timing swapping a ring in for it. And where is it locked behind? Oh right, FARMING BIRDS WITH A BOW BECAUSE THEIR TOO FAST FOR BLOODY MAGIC HALF THE TIME. It's not even like I'm farming for the weapon I wonna use for a given playthrough, or for that damned banished knight armour. Seriously, elden ring dosen't have anywhere near the worst farms in the series (that has to go to DS2 with the Ivory Knight farm for that stupid soul), it's just the AMOUNT of it is absurd. I'd rather farm runes for crafting materials then have to go on a grocery shopping list just because I ran out of gold fowl foots in the endgame and want the rune boost...god please. And truth be told, I would rather the DIRECT consumbles be purchasable by some far away as shit NPC that dosen't have a bell bearing so I have to go out of my way for it evrey time rather then farm for them for no reason.

    Preach brother! This would be such a huge in game quality of life upgrade, and give me something to do with all of the excess runes I carry around after I’ve reached whatever level for whatever build/character. In addition to this, for the love of god, they should have you turn in smithing stone bell bearings to the blacksmith,so every weapon level upgrade isn’t a two step process. The amount of time I’ve spent running from one side of the roundtable hold to the other and mentally calculating how many stones, and of what type I need for the next upgrade is infuriating. Just let me buy weapon upgrades!

      @@emotionaljonxvx Or why the twin virgins won’t buy anything. Again, I have to run over to the blacksmith, to sell him stuff, to be able to go back and buy stuff from them. This is piss poor usability/user-interface design! From needs to hire a product manager for their crafting and upgrade systems! Also, why the hell can’t each merchant I’m forced to murder have a name that actually identifies them? E.g. “Nomadic Merchant Mt. Gelmir” - just so when I’m going through the TWO different merchant lists at the Twin Husks, I know which one sells the explosive great bolts. But noooooo, instead I have to commit to memory a) the type of merchant he is, b) which of the two lists his merchandise appears in, AND c) which number of what kind of merchant that he is. OR, and hear me out, this is a craaaazy idea; maybe they could just put a fast travel at each merchant, so I’m not forced to murder them just so I don’t have to go through a 5 minute process to get to some of the better ones that you need to visit repeatedly to restock on frequently used arrows, bolts, etc. - And don’t even get me started on there not being a grace at Gowry’s shack or Seluvis’ Rise to navigate the absurdity of the steps of those questlines! And then there’s just the overall cumbersome and unintuitive methods that you need to actually progress NPC dialog. Nevermind something that should be as basic as the ability to create a custom sort for your weapons, armor, and craftables. Instead, I have to go by “time acquired”, but because the sort chest menus are segregated by weapon type (weapon, ranged weapon, shields), and your equipment menu is not, and instead combines them all, I’m forced to try back out of the grace menu, check my equipment list to see if I’ve gone to the next line of weapons, and then go back into the grace menu, navigate back to the appropriate weapon type, remember my train of thought for the sort I was creating, and continue to do this repeatedly. And if I decide to change my playstyle or respec? Yep, go to sort chest, dump everything back in, and do it all again. And I’m not even a PVP’er. I just PVE and help people in co-op. I really want to be able to learn to be a bad red man, but the frustration of not being able to experiment and re-sort easily until I find a setup and sort that works for me, makes trying even less appealing. Don’t get me wrong; Elden Ring has become my favorite game of all time, but there are sooo many usability issues that, as you said, make me spend entirely too much time doing repetitious, mundane shit, instead of just running around in this amazing, gorgeous game and actually PLAYING it. Rant off. Keep up the good work! I enjoy your videos and the perspectives you offer! You’ve given me a lot of food for thought, and changed my mind on a lot of pvp related topics! Cheers!

      Seamless isn't inherently anti-invasion. The developer, LukeYui, just couldn't implement them because of how the synchronized saves would work amongst other technical issues. They did eventually find a solution where invader saves will no longer be synced to the host's, and they plan to add invasions back in for the next patch when the DLC drops. IIRC, invasions there will be more balanced as the cooperator an invasion slots are dynamically allocated such that it's always 1:1 rather than being fixed at 2:1 However, it might have an opt-out thing in the config, and messages and bloodstains from other players in other worlds don't function in Seamless, so while good, it is still not the definitive way to play. With that said, there are many amazing aspects of Seamless that absolutely should be carried over into vanilla such as seamless exploration, increased player limit (it's in the hundreds lol), and smoother networking.

My only advice for anything that the dlc doesn't fix is: just use cheat engine. I don't entirely agree. I would be happy if the DLC gave us the ability to purchase more items, sure. But I'm not unhappy that SOME items need to be farmed, and SOME items are rare and difficult to get in quantity. I think that's fine. These are all optional items, after all. If you want the item badly enough, you put in the time.
    This game isn't just one thing. Farming is part of the game, too. It's totally optional, fortunately for those who don't like it. Many -- MOST -- bosses and other enemies are also optional, but you wouldn't say that those are "not gameplay", would you? It's ALL gameplay: exploring, fighting, cheesing, experimenting, questing, traveling, talking to NPCs, AND farming. ER is heavily weighted toward fighting, but it's not 100%, and it would be pretty boring if it was. Some of us actually LIKE farming. It gives you a reason to go back to areas of the game you might otherwise not visit again. It's kind of fun to try to find the best place to farm for something, and if you're a bit of a math geek, it's interesting to test farming areas to see which are actually more efficient than others. I find it fun to set goals for collecting and stocking certain numbers of all the different materials and then work toward reaching those goals. As a geek, I also like figuring out how to maximize discovery to get the most out of farming, and to find the easiest and quickest ways of killing things that I'm farming materials from..
    I like farming because it gives me something to do in game when I want to be playing, but I don't want to be using my brain all that much right at the moment. When I've just defeated a big boss or gone through a tough area and I need a bit of a break, or when I'm having a bad pain day and just have zero spoons for anything using more than 3 brain cells at the moment, I will farm. When my husband was playing, I would often find him doing the same thing. He'd spend a lot of his playtime just farming sheep for bones (big archery fans here) or repeatedly going through the Gatefront Ruins or Stormveil Castle again (this was when he was FAR beyond those areas in game), just farming those low-level enemies for something relatively brainless and relaxing to do in game.
    I also set a goal for myself of collecting every single item in the game. I'm almost to the end of my first playthrough -- just a few bosses left -- and I have spent plenty of time farming for weapons and armor pieces. I have everything, except for the final few items that can only be found in the tail ends of the last couple areas of the game. I've put everything in a spreadsheet. It's been a very enjoyable project for me.
    If things were going to be made available for sale that currently must be farmed for or crafted from farmed materials that are non-respawning and have low drop rates, then the prices will need to be set pretty high to keep those items valuable, and then you'll just be farming for runes to buy them anyway. I mean, unless you're one of those players who never farms for runes, and then you'd be choosing between spending the runes you get playing on the leveling up for yourself and your weapons that you would have spent them on normally, or spending some of those runes on items that you would otherwise have farmed for, and winding up with lower level weapons and/or character in exchange.

    • @Angi_Mathochist
      @Angi_Mathochist 2 месяца назад

      There are, though, some items that are too rare. Rune Arcs are the biggest example, for me. I have used hardly any Rune Arcs because I know they're rare and limited and I know I am not a very good fighter -- I die A LOT. If I used them regularly, I would go through them all very quickly. I have used one here and there when I thought I was in a fairly safe area and wouldn't die for a while, but when starting a boss fight -- the very time when using one would most benefit me -- it seems like too much of a bad idea, because I would be very likely to go through half a dozen or more just trying to beat that one boss. SO I wind up just rarely using them. (I intend to try using some for the DLC. But I do expect to run through them very quickly.)
      I know you can get more in some way through PVP, but PVP is not my thing at all -- I've done no multiplayer or PVP play *at all*, so more Rune Arcs through that method are not available (or at least, not worth it) for me. I've tried farming rats, but in many hours of trying, I've got them to drop maybe 3 total. Maybe bad luck is part of that, but even the wiki says you should only get a couple per hour farming rats. So I'm supposed to spend an hour farming rats for an expected 2 Rune Arcs, which will probably last me less than 10 minutes total when I use them? (MUCH less, if I'm fighting a boss.)
      Maybe you're not intended to be able to use them all the time, but still. When you die a lot and could easily run through your entire supply for the whole game in one or two areas, it makes all the Great Runes -- supposedly these huge, powerful things that you're defeating the biggest bosses in the game FOR -- totally worthless. There seriously needs to be a better way to get more Rune Arcs for players who don't PVP. And/or, Rune Arcs should last for a guaranteed minimum amount of time -- like say, at LEAST 15 minutes of gameplay -- **even if you die**. I would totally use them for boss fights if I could get 15 minutes worth of boss attempts out of one Rune Arc!
      Starlight Shards, too, as was mentioned. The best use of those in game is to spend most of them with Seluvis, which leaves you a small handful and no way to get more. Not in one playthrough, anyway. Why not give us a way to get more of those, sometime after Seluvis's questline is done?
      And why so few Raw Meat Dumplings, and no more? We should have a way to get more of those. Expensive is fine, but there's no reason they need to run out entirely, is there?

      Hard disagree because making certain crafting items rare just gives dupers and cheaters an unfair advantage over normal players they should all be buyable.

      @@WokeandProud How does anyone have an unfair advantage? Everyone has the ability to dupe, same as everyone has the ability to farm runes. It's your choice whether you want to do that or not.
      Making everything easily infinitely available just makes everything meaningless. I wish there was a more feasible way to farm rune arcs. I wind up not using them at all, since I die so much, I know that if I started using them, I'd be out in no time. And I don't do any kind of multiplayer, so I don't get more through PVP. And rats drop them so rarely it's ridiculous to try to farm them that way. But on the other hand, if they were made purchaseable, then you might as well just do away with the item entirely and just make the great rune effect be active all the time for the selected great rune, since there would then be no reason that anyone would ever not have one active.
      Same with everything else. If everything is infinitely and easily available, then there's no reason anyone would not be using everything possible all the time. Might as well just get rid of all the items, then, and just turn on all the effects all the time.

    • @Angi_Mathochist
      @Angi_Mathochist 2 месяца назад

      @@WokeandProud It was just an example, the first item that came to my mind. Anyway, items is items. And crafting materials get more important in the DLC, from what I understand. (I haven't played it yet myself.) Rune arcs might be on a different level from most crafting materials, but the principle is still the same. If you're going to make all the crafting materials equally easy to obtain in unlimited numbers, then those items wouldn't be special any more. Might as well just simplify things, do away with crafting, and give unlimited items.
      Bewitching branches, for example. The crafting materials to make those are rare and hard to farm. So people don't normally use bewitching branches for every single multi-enemy fight. They save them for when they would make the most difference, since they only have a few. If they were cheap and unlimited, then there would be no reason not to use them *all the time*. They wouldn't be special any more.
      And sleep pots. Why not use those for EVERY fight, if Trina's Lilies were unlimited and cheap? We don't, because they're not -- they're limited and slow to farm. But if they were, things would be very different.

    but the fact that these items are only farmable makes them even less likely to be used by highee lvl pve'rs. any invader who values their time just farms enough of them to save scum..

      @@Crit-Multiplier I just meant that developer intentions for items and their availability can end up having an inverse effect when you take into account any level of power gamer or exploit. A system that might be intended to curb use of powerful items could end up making it so only those most seeking of power use them.

      but do you rly think new hosts would use these items if they were more avalable? no. and for good reason. it would hurt their overall gameplay. they have other things to worry about. as it stands, invaders have more than enough access to these tools if they can get over some weird arbitrary moral code that has never made sense to me in any way. if youre reluctant to use these things thats fine. but there is a solution to your problem that you only ignore because you think that it's unfair to do so. as you've said yourself, these items increase the variety in the game. either get over it and use them. or dont and accept that others will regardless of your opinion. they seek power and they get power. there's rly nothing wrong with this. especially in terms of a video game

      @@Crit-Multiplier I don't think we're on the same page, likely because I've misunderstood. I was just responding with a general musing around the idea and I'm not sure what the direct relation to the video is.
      My only real point in the video is that I would like the developers to make all materials purchasable by the endgame just to remove some of the tedium involved in PVP and build-making.
      As far as powerful items go (starlight shards, golem arrows, etc) I don't care much about whether or not people use them. I'm just not crazy about the items being artificially restricted because it can move those items into a generally unobtainable bracket where they might otherwise find a use in the main game and by a broader audience.
      Again, not sure if we're talking about the same thing because I think I've misunderstood some aspect of the point you were getting at, so sorry about that.

    "Crafting was not fully realised until late in development, and therefore given marginal consideration". Remember when they delayed the game's release by a month? Their excuse was "the depth & strategic freedom of the game exceeded initial expectations". I'm not sure if this was hyping bullshit, but if it was true, I guarantee it was related to placement of endless tedious rubbish in the open world to justify this awful system. Then again, they rewrote a lot of the lore after 1.00, so who knows...
    "Elden Ring wants to waste your time". And it has wasted mine. I apologise for my long comments on your videos, I'm frustrated by a lot of the stuff you care about too.
    "I like having limitations in my games". Well, Miyazaki said ER is about freedom and that's that. We will not get purchasable farmables in the DLC, because that would upend their entire justification for the system, and would also give people with the DLC a huge advantage over those without it.
    You'll honestly, legitimately have to just wait for FromSoft to get over this silly 'player freedom' phase and make a game more tailored to our tastes.

    I just want feminine armor sets that have poise *and* look good. There are currently 0 feminine sets that will put you at or over 75 poise, meaning I get to look like a dude in PvP, or get to look good and have I have disadvantage in PvP. I won’t get what I want though, being the minority in a massive way doesn’t help. 😢
