Hi! You can use zigzag stitch, it works very well. The thinner and more prone to fraying the fabric is, the smaller the zigzag stitch you should use for serging. Hope this helps!

I'm a beginner and don't have a serger yet. What stich can I use instead?
I always use a zigzag stitch to “serge”with my normal sewing machine :)
