    Heyo, I got your case study right here: I get controller drift like crazy, however I actually treat every single controller with tender care. I even did an experiment one time with a PS4 controller where I would only ever use it wearing gloves, and would put it back in the box immediately after using it. After a few months of semi-regular usage sessions, it still succumbed to drift.
    What confuses me is that I've seen people downright abuse their controllers and they'll insist they've never gotten drift. Yet I'm here keeping them sterile like hospital equipment and they still die on me after a few months.
    At this point, I just put a warranty on every single controller I buy. It saves me money in the long run.

      Newer controllers use new joysticks with worse quality than before. My death stranding dualshock started to (slightly) drift after like a year of use. While my older dualshocks started to drift after 4-5 years with heavier use than my newer controller.

      Might br because people who serially abuse their controllers tend to replace them more often? That's obviously why Bob has never had drift, he uses so many different controllers that he probably hasnt used the sticks enough on any one to start drifting

  • @terribletruth8201
    @terribletruth8201 2 года назад +792

    I feel like drift is mostly caused by manufacturing variances/issues. I barely play my Switch and when I do it's docked so I use a Pro Controller. Yet my joycon still got drift. Considering how much we beat up our N64 controllers in Smash and Mario Party yet they're still working literally 20 years later, I don't think it's the user.

    • @SilvaShadow1990
      @SilvaShadow1990 2 года назад +65

    Hey Bob, really appreciate your testing a lot. You've done a great job!! Just want to say something here so viewers know more.:) You can set the analog trigger for two levels of its response, one level of travel sensing for games like racing and another level of quick action with little pressing. Also its vibration has different levels for setting to fit your preference. If you check its circularity, it has only 0.6% average error compared to 7% or even 10% around of all other controllers. Again our big thanks to you. We are very open to know different thoughts from players and committed to doing better.

      Sounds good but imo hair trigger analog shoulder buttons still don't feel as good as having an actual trigger stop since there's no tactile feedback on the actuation point. If a version of this with physical trigger stops was made, it looks like it would be literally perfect, the absolute holy grail of controllers. Failing that, a version that just had digital triggers would be just as perfect, but for the Switch and non-racing PC games specifically.

I mean, it works for a relaxing game, but if i spam it while playing a more intensive game, the button lags and doesn't release. Ps. The joy con is only 1 month old and it certainly didn't feel like this when i got it. Plus, the clicking sound of the L and R keys are totally different, with the L feeling more springy and clicky.

    Bob they went with this design because it's easier to do. Like you said it's basically doing the same thing as a membrane. That means it's not going to complete the circuit before it bottoms out, which most mechanical switches do, but there may be other benefits to that design. It might last longer than rubber membranes for example. I don't know what it is but I've worn out the A on a number of recent rubber membrane controllers. They aren't make the rubber membranes as thick as they did back in the day.

    The gyro would be very useful for me in PC and the overall high quality build sounds nice. Macro is cool too. It seems like this controller would be great for PC users who like to mess around with the Steam controller settings. Making complete overhauls of a control layout.
    However I just can't get rid of that sweet sweet PS5 controller. I don't even own a PS5 but I bought a controller specifically to use on PC. Pretty much no other controller has a touchpad on it which can be used in a lot of different ways for PC. Headphone jack, usb-c, fancy triggers that can be modded for use in PC games, and some fancy lights to match my Razer gear and it's kinda hard to beat the PS5 on PC.
    I don't think I'll be picking it up but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this company to see what they do next. Which the Steam Controller out of production, the PC controller scene is desperate for someone to take it's place.

    I wish they could have added back paddles as well. I've become accustomed to those, they are very useful for FPS games and Soulslikes. I'm hoping the next Xbox Elite controller will have these hall sensor sticks. Although from what I've heard that could be impossible with the way it has its stick pieces attached magnetically and the way the triggers already use hall sensors that it might cause interferences.

      unless you can use the paddles independently of the other buttons buttons like you can on the steam controller/deck they will be gimped

    • @WitheredSpirit
      @WitheredSpirit 2 года назад

      @@bland9876 Gimped as in you're not getting extra buttons? That depends. Some software (on PC) can recognize the Elite's paddles as separate buttons. You can assign them to different key bindings. The problem is that not all games support multi-device inputs, especially if they come from controller and keyboard. One solution is to map every controller input to a keyboard/mouse input at that point. But no real situation at that point is "optimal." As long as the controller has the paddles, it will be a great addition. If they add in software like 8bitdo does with the Pro 2, or allow it to be recognized as an Elite controller instead of mapping to be solely done on device/hardware.

    • @bland9876
      @bland9876 2 года назад +2

      @@WitheredSpirit even if you have to use all controller inputs you can still do things with the paddles independently of the other buttons say you want the B button to be your jump button you don't have to map the paddle to the B button you can say map the paddle to be the left D pad and the right trigger at the same time. And even if your game doesn't like mixed inputs you can still sometimes find a few mixed inputs that work for example in fortnite there's a dedicated button to allow you to Sprint without you having to push forward on the controller and you can map that button to somewhere on the controller. Pretty handy when you have the regular sprint button mapped somewhere else that you don't really want to be double tapping.

    I've done some testing myself. I got my switch and within six months I had drift. I keep my electronics super clean and when the joy on began to drift it looked brand new. Then my cousin, who plays most games with me online, also had drift around the same time that I experienced mine. Then I got new joycons as did he and we play a lot of games in which you have to press down the left stick to run. So going forward we mapped the run button to a trigger or face button. NO MORE DRIFT! I think the combination of pressing down on the stick and a direction causes the joycons to wear much faster than normal. So I think the reason some people never get drift is the face they only play certain games, EG Wulff here. I've also done a survey of those who have had drift and I ask what types of games they play most and those that have drift usually play third person or FPS. Does anyone fit into this methodology?

    The controller knows you are pressing a direction, it knows it because it knows where you are not pressing.
    By subtracting where you are pressing from where you are pressing, or from subtracting where you are not pressing from where you are pressing, whichever is greater.
    It obtains a difference, or deviation. The controller subsystem generates command using these deviations.

      To add to that, I've been gaming for about 37 years now, owned and own pretty much every system since the NES and have only ever had a drift issue with one controller and that was a PS4 controller. I'm also pretty sure it was because I dropped it once. In all honesty I'm beginning to believe drift is made up or maybe people should take better care of their things. While it would be nice to see them commit to fully mechanical buttons, I suppose a benefit of their approach is that you don't get as much wobble with the buttons as you would on, say, an Xbox controller. You then don't have to worry about the contact pads on the PCB being poorly designed like they are on, say, an Xbox controller, since the button will always press pretty much straight down. So it's kind of best of both worlds, the durability of membrane contacts but the feel and reliability of a mechanical switch.
