Junior Christopher gonna succeed his great father in lens testing in the year 2040, a great day for us who will grow old by then, when I die in 2117 I will be happy to know I can still come back for the latest reviews of the liquid titanium adjusting pancake lenses for the holographic laser cameras.
What a puzzling lens! I've never been interested in manual retro-style pretentious glass (and didn't even want to click on this video at first), but, surprisingly to myself, I loved your sample photos with this thing so much! Can't even explain why, but this lens seemingly really does something special.
The colours and character of your sample images are really showing this lens' strength. And the bokeh is just gorgeous. I'd love to just try this, though I doubt I'd buy it because it wouldn't really fit in with my work. Perhaps if I were to buy a travel lens for personal photography this would fit nicely.
I don't remember you ever testing an M-mount lens on your show before. Nice! My light-weight 50 f2 for Leica M-mount is a Zeiss Planar and I'm really happy with it.
The sensor stack on a Sony is too thick to get an accurate sharpness test from this lens when adapted or really any M glass. Leica M is obviously the best but the Leica SL serries is designed for adapted M glass as well with their micro lens design on the sensor. I would think the sharpness would be better and maybe the weird softness mid way though the aperture range on an M or SL camera. You might also get better performance on a Nikon Z camera because the mount is 2mm closer but idk on that. Regardless of that it still seems like a pretty good performer. Totally acceptable for a lens of this type which is great because I've been thinking about buying one.
I have been using the Techart Adapters with autofocusing with M Manual lenses and have been interested buying this lens. I have another adapter that can put Nikon F mount lenses to be put on the Leica M8 digital camera and wondering how the quality compares with a f/2 Sony Lens? Cheers!
Not sure if you have a Nikon Z camera in your arsenal but I've found lenses designed for Leica sensors match very well with them. Much better than on Sony sensors. That might be the cause of your corner sharpness with this lens.
I hope you eventually start testing these M-mount lenses on a camera they were made for. Adapting to Sony will not reflect the real performance of a lens like this. The sensor array is very different.
It's disappointing to see that they only have an M mount version. This lens is a copy of a LTM lens (Taylor and Hobson for Reid cameras). Hopefully, they will issue an LTM version, my Barnack Leicas are dying for one of those!
It must be stressed that this review is excusively useful to photographers adaptng the lens to Sony cameras: the sharpness (and other) results are absolutely *not* valid to assess the image quality of the lens on Leica M cameras for which it was designed, this being due mainly to the different filter stack thickness. I must wonder if Thypoch was aware, when loaning him the lens, that Christopher Frost would be testing it on Sony cameras via adapter.
Hmm.I have just bought an 55mm f/2 lens to use on a full frame camera. It's a Super Takumar, complete with a decent quality threaded 1A filter. It has superb bulid quality, is nice and sharp consistently and very easy to adapt. It cost £18 delivered. Decent quality vintage lenses are vastly better value than this sort of fashion-statement lens.
With half grand price tag it is difficult to understand why would you need such a lens, for this kind of money I’d get Industar 50 if really in need of something weird and “normal” lens that actually performs better with AF as a bonus
Seems that there is a fad for this somewhat naff lenses - few years back it was plastic fixed focus - oh boy us photographers are suckers for new kit...enjoy.
Why review such a lens on a Sony camera with it's thick censor stack? Time to get a Leica M series camera to properly test and review all of these M mount manual lens. ;-)
Many of us use adapted lenses. Plus this company are selling rangefinder style lenses for mirrorless mounts, albeit this is just in M. He should review the Simera in X mount next!
@@말랑말랑멍몽이 the only thing I can think of: on monochrome cameras the sensor itself is slightly thinner and lets in 1 more stop of light. Not sure why that would matter though
4:35... junior Christopher.. all the very best for the little one
I hope he's sharp

I adore the Bokeh and rendering of this lens. It is perfectly imperfect.

Looking forward to reviews of the Thypoch f1.4 lenses on Sony!

Have you tried this yourself or have you just read some cork sniffing nonsense on reddit?
Some people have reported focus shifting on stopping down… might be why things got a bit odd?
My thoughts too. You can see it very clearly on the LoCA test
Hi Chris. It seems that this lens exhibits a lot of focus shift. Did you correct for that during your sharpness testing by any chance?
Yes, I did
See if you can test the Simera 1.4’s in X mount next!
Good review. I can't but feel a lens like this would be better suited to a lower resolution sensor I think, the Sony A7S for example.
A Fashion Statement....plus magnifique!
Bass or alloy?
Meike 55mm F1.4 Z/E/F when will ?
A lens without a filter threat for M mount is kind of a deal breaker.
The 28 next please (and a comparison to the Argus 28) :)

Looks like a retired mechanical engenineer designed something in it's backyard.
Nice review , but save your money .
Leica tax 😅
Would be nice if they had a black version 😅

What does thick sensor stack mean?
