Actually there is a perfect use for this lens - paired with one of sonys old little nex cameras (especially the nex5 and 5t) this makes a tiny and cheap superwide hd video camera with decent quality - its perfect for skateboard filming!
Unfortunately the video capabilities of most Nex cameras are on pair with cheap sports cameras you get today. With f/8 you also throw away all the advantages you would get from light gathering.
@@quikee9195 cheap action cameras are significantly worse, i used to have an NEX-5 and with a wide angle lens (sigma 16mm f1.4) it took great video, my cheap action camera isnt nearly wide enough for sports video and they often get terrible battery and have worse video quality
@@GrandmasLeftKidney I had Nex-5r and Nex-3 and what you get is 1080p with line skipping at best, which is just horrible for today's standard. OK, you may not get a random cheap action camera, but with a little research you can find a decent one for a reasonable price. I have the Xiaomi Yi 4k (for a couple of years now), which you can get for less than $150 new today (and even less for a used one), which has way better video quality and not even a $400 lens would help the Nex in this situation.
I've had a great time experimenting with this lens on my micro 4/3 camera. Still getting the hang of how and when to use this angle of view, but it's produced some fun results!
@2:30 “No filter mount” for that you could use a Sensor clip filter like the STC clip filters that are available for Sony, Canon, Pentax and I believe Nikon and Fuji systems. I have used a ND16 numerous times for shooting in Sony slog in my channel. As soon as I saw your image samples, that is the FIRST thing I thought, this lens paired with a ND clip filter would be an amazing long exposure landscape tiny setup! Thanks for the amazing reviews as always!
I'm shocked by how good the image quality is and even more shocked by how I don't mind the image circle on full frame. I kind of like how it gives you a porthole view.
Thank you for giving us the information snd review of this very interesting and inexpensive very wide angle lens. Your photos where helpful in making me decide if I would want such a lens for my Nikon Z cameras. Very brief and informative review. Thank you for your review. 📷👌😎😷🎖👏👍
Thanks for the video review - ordered for my Sony and Fuji cameras. I miss my Olympus Body Cap lenses as I had sold off all my MFT gear and no longer have them. They were a lot of fun to use.
@@trym2121 thanks for the heads-up, no, don't have it - not available in the USA, ebay resellers in Japan charging a premium for them ($200), I got the Pergear ones on sale at Amazon for $75...
I have the Olympus 9mm bodycap lens for MFT and the image quality may not be as good as I would like it to be, but the lens is so small that it's always in my bag, which wouldn't be the case with a regular much bigger lens. The mechanical quality of the Pergear seems to me to be even higher than that of the Olympus.
If I had a camera thats in the lineup for this little lens, I would probably use it as a cap for the camera instead of the actual cap. since there are more expensive camera caps for sure, this might be an option ;)
I wish cameras will allow you to set a bunch of preset exif data for certain manual lens as. I mean technically this one name, aperture and focal length is fixed. No reason why it all can't be entered and recorded. The SS / exposure and the ISO are sensor based ain't it?
Apply a defish lens profile_ Samyang 7.5mm in Lightroom and voila, the image gets stretched to cover fullframe. Of course you still don't really get the full frame resolution, but not any different than when defishing a fullframe fisheye ( i think?) That way. There's of course many reasons for a brighter lens, but as you can see here it's much better than it has any right to be for this size and price.
I could see it being useful for someone on a trip where outdoor landscapes aren't the focus but they still would like the option without taking up a lot of space in their bag. I'm mildly curious how a camera with IBIS would do with this for video work, like for those drivers making videos that want more quality than a dashcam provides.
How did you get rid of the purple vignetting this lens seems to make on most cameras? I have a copy of this lens and it makes a purple vignette on my Sony a6000.
You are probably going to have to make a custom profile in Lightroom. Carefully apply counter green white balance with the brush tool. On my a7s there's nothing. On my a7r there's yellow and red color cast.
Seems like a bad decision to put the focus lever at the bottom. Hand held it seems like it would be hard to reach while looking through the finder. And with a lens this slow a tripod should come in handy, but if you mount the camera using a quick release plate that lever is going to get even harder to use. Surely, it would be better to place it to one side - unless you only shoot in portrait mode.

As a Cannon shooter i have only one commet: 10mm but f8? Can you even get ANYTHING out of focus? :-D I have a 40mm pancake for my 6D mkii and somehow... its great fun and i dont know why, i have a 35mm f2 and the 50 1.8 and so on but the 40 2.8 is always so much fun to use and i dont get why - maybe its the pancake perk :D
Yes you can. I use this lens on a fullframe in Clubs(eh, dark corners anyways) . I figured out the best distance setting and made a white dot there, but on some pictures it's obvious that sharpness isn't as good as the lens can do and the background is in focus. I just found out if I defish it using the Samyang 7.5mm Profile, it stretches all over the frame. So. In some sense it's almost kinda fullframe. I wish they made a 8, or , or 10,11,12,13 mm fullframe of almost the same size, even if it was f11 or 14 Very happy with it, still getting a proper one. But a fisheye:) turns out it's better for people than rectalinear
Almost all camera manufacturers are Japanese, but Canon is partly US part Japanese. Might have something to do with the by now completely impossible to follow sanctions on China

10/10 on Portability :D
For a weird lens review, it'd be fun to see if you can borrow a Kinoptik Tegea 9.8mm. Rare, but its wide angle and softness is very dreamlike.
Could be a nice option for lightweight vlogging.
It is a nice little lens. Worth the money, even it will be used just from time to time.
would have been nice if it had a little lever for a built in lens cap. i've seen that before on these tiny pancakes.

You can modify the lens hood to hold a filter ;)
Can you review the TTArtisan 11mm f/2.8 Lens please? It’s a cheap lens but I only trust you to verify the lens performance.
