Now that you have both the Tiffen Black Pro Mist and the Schneider Hollywood Black Magic Filter, which one would you recommend?
Oh man, HBM for the win. But i’ve been more into Classic Soft lately. Here’s my entire playlist of videos on filters, theres some more recent ones in there. I’m a huge proponent of using filters, always getting new ones. In fact my video next week is about some interesting ND filters

Justin Phillip Ive probably watched all your videos haha. Thank you so much for all the info you share with us. For about a week now, I was just thinking about if should get the pro mist 1/8 or 1/4. Luckily I haven’t bought neither. I’m an aspiring super amateur filmmaker and I only have a budget for one filter right now. Should I go for the HBM 1/4 or the 1/8 to start?
Well said Justin. Filters are incredibly important when shooting video as in many situations you cannot just increase the shutter speed to cut down the light. So having ND filters for anyone truly interested in becoming a cinematographer. are not a "it's good to have " they are a " must have". Also I bought a hitech format black movie mist filter 1. I'm still waiting for it to arrive and hope it will be a good alternative the tiffen black mist pro, which are for me, way to expensive. Great video dude.
This is an excellent review of filters. Thank for putting me on to the Hollywood BM and the day for night especially!
Mark Evans Thanks! You bet! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great video and info Justin. Thank you !
Nice material mate!! Cheers from Sao Paulo , Brazil
I think now days filters are more important than ever. Cameras really put out such a digital look now. If you aren't using some kind of filter to soften things it almost always comes out really bad looking.
chill out bro, haters are gonna hate always, many people just feel good if they play "the Critic" without achieving anything on their own, just make them feel better in their shitty existence. Greetings from Budapest, thanks for sharing
Very awesome and informative video! Thanx! So I have never used any of the colored filters before and I’m just wondering how to set white balance when using these? Tobacco and sunsets etc.
Shoot in RAW when on the fly or always bring a trusted Sekonic 800 Color Meter or just pull up the vectorscope/RGB parade, OR have a datacolor checker chart 🤙🏼
@@JustinPhillip great thanx! Can’t really shoot in raw but bring a color checker sure can do👌💪. Thanx again
thanks man, im working in post and i can tell you the sentence - "we" fix it in post - is just antisocial and kind of a admission of not able to do the job... Can you please tell me in wich cases you NEED more than 4x4? where is the difference between 4x4 and 4x5,65? Is it just for anamorphic lenses!? why is the 4x5,65 standard...? would love to get an explanation about the differences in filter size (4x4/ 4x5,65 /6x6)
most cine lenses’ front element is larger than 4x4, so thats where the standard Panavision size of 4x5.65” comes in.
Good video I wish I had filters like that and Oh I can do that in Davinci lol opps no I can't I suck
Hi, since there are different matte boxes that take filters, are filter sizes topically of different size for different matte boxes?
no its really more about budget. but me personally, i’ve stopped investing in anything under a 4x5.65” , which is the industry standard size and is usually going to cover most lenses up to 114mm O.D.’s
May I ask what screw on filter would you recommend for a new beauty RUclips channel in your opinion?
Thanks for your time!
This is one of my favorite, subtle diffusion filters. This link has multiple sizes available: amzn.to/31N6M3o
Justin Phillip thank you sir!!
I can’t find a hbm for my canon. 67mm I believe
just use a step up ring: amzn.to/3Nixrul ; along with one of these: amzn.to/3lXpcrj
dude never heard of the "hollywood black magic filter" So glad I watched this I'm now starting to hunt for one of my own
dope
Have you got a link for the Zeiss 35mm F/2.8 lens please?
Hey Shark! They don't sell the Zeiss lens that I have anymore, it's a Contax. But there's this one, its newer, little brother, which is actually an f/2!
amzn.to/2Vy3Brr
Thank you so much Justin! Really appreciate that bro! I will check it out!
I would love to know where to buy the hollywood black magic filter for my sigma art 18-35mm lens?
Shark i put a link to it in the description. Just get a step up ring, or i’m sure if you hit that link it can lead you to a. 72mm version.
Justin Phillip are you using IR Cut ND’s with the pocket camera?
You are a pro. I respect your expertise. Sub granted. Check out TYTAN Cinema Lens soon...
