So this is a technique you sometimes see Roger Deakins using in his work - the "cove" of lighting around your subject, allows you to light for a natural looking, graduated fall off of light on the face. The versatility of the setup allows you to tweak the power levels of each bounced light to easily adjust your contrast ratios on the subject, allowing for moodier, darker looks, or softer, brighter looks. You have a big soft light in your scene, without needing the extra room or expenses to shoot super powerful lights through huge pieces of diffusion. A very useful technique!

this dude really knows whats hes doing, this is really cinematic, vs other youtubers suggesting to shoot in 60fps and using teal and orange luts...
so spot on mate
Totally agree!!
Yep, so many charlatans on this site.
I literally laughed out loud at this.
Spencer Sakurai is another increadible youtuber that doesn’t offer his shitty LUTS. He is an excellent cinematographer and made actually amazing videos in the past. You should check him out.
this is some of the best content ive ever seen
Wow thank you so much! :)
@@RobEllisCinematographer AGREED! Awesome man!
I third this. Absolutely invaluable content. Thank you so much for creating it
Totally agree. The best cinematic lighting video.
true
I was no joke thinking this morning, "I wish someone would do a tutorial of that bounce technique Roger Deakins uses", and then bam, Rob delivers.
Haha that's awesome, well I'm glad I timed that so perfect! ;) thank you for watching! :)
you need to delete cookies from your brain
Hahaa same! Great stuff here.
that should be the title of a series of videos "Bam! Rob delivers"
I’m very impressed. It’s like you care about teaching instead of showing off.
No one should watch these videos because that would just make too much sense! Instead, I would suggest one of those other channels with a minimum of 1 million followers and perhaps grab a Canon 1Dxiii on your way over there. hahaha
@@JoshBenBernales people act like making beautiful images is a secret, yet they wont sit to learn lighting... even though it is the secret
Your channel is awesome as well, good to see you around good content.
CineBlogs haha so true!
And here i was just thinking after watching Robs video, " This is only the 2nd time ive truly learned something of high practical value. The 1st was with Epic Light Media. lol. Great to see you comment here!
You are hands down the best lighting/cinematography resource that I've come across on RUclips. Thank you.
Man I really love that you show the whole lighting process and include diagrams... this kind of knowledge is invaluable. Keep up the great work man it really means a lot to us!
The easiest and simplest type of cinematography I have seen on the Internet, thanks for this kind of videos. Low-budget filmmakers appreciate it
Thank you so much! :)
I just want to comment on the background music SO Good that it does not interfere with the fine tutorial content.... low volume "There but not there" So many of these just slap pre program music without thought !
I didn't just stumble on this video I've come back many times to reacquaint myself to the lighting technique ... not run and gun but good if the budget is there
Great work Rob. I love Deakins cove light technique. He is an absolute legend.
I’ve just watched five of your videos and I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed youtube videos this much
This video is literally that ONE video you should never forget. It’s so so good.
Thanks so much for this.
I watched a video a couple days ago with someone talking about Deakins and the way he uses cove lighting and all I could think was man it would be cool to see a tutorial on this and voila opened up youtube today and here it is. Thanks for the video man
Haha that's awesome! Glad I could help! Thanks man! :)
You have a very calm and easy to follow teaching style. Straight to the point, no filler, clear, and very easy to understand. Great work. Do you have any scenes of the Blackmagic micro with this lighting technique or similar lighting techniques?
Thank you, appreciate it! :) not this particular technique - but it would look pretty much identical to this - the Micro and 2.5k have a remarkably similar image!
Your tutorials are literally one of the best tutorials I have ever seen on youtube
Thank you so much! :)
In my opinion your teaching method and techniques are literally second to none on youtube....thanks for the content!
Very nicely done, Rob. Great step-by-step examples.
I absolutely love these videos not because they show great lighting techniques, but how they teach you to THINK about great lighting techniques.
Thank you! :) I'm glad the videos are coming off that way, I would hate for them to seem like there's only one specific way to use a technique - lighting is such a versatile thing with so many ways to tweak things and get different results!
From 3:37 due to that background rhythm, I felt like I am watching a Film that teaches Film Making. Amazing x 3!
Blackmagic owes this man a sponsorship... please start a patreon please
This video actually helped me lighting my passport photos!😂
Turned out to be the world's best passport photos, yeah? 😂
@@sudarshankar9094 sure! Sadly my face does not get prettier but at least the lighting is on point😬
Just wanted to let you know this is by far the most informative and valuable lighting tutorial I've ever seen on RUclips, been trying to figure out how deakins does his interiors for years and the results here look absolutely perfect.
And he does it again folks. This is what shaping light looks like. Thanks again Rob. AMAZING!!!
Kind words, thank you so much!
This dude is the only youtuber to make me turn on notifications. Seriously learning more from these videos than in the thousands spent in film school.
Talk about technical understanding, this is so insightful , it's great to see the different methods used to convey the lighting of a scene
Thank you Matthew!! :)
I think you are singlehandedly teaching a generation of not just filmmakers but photographers also.
This is the best channel I've run across on you tube.
great explanation. I have learnt a lot. I am a TV DOP since 30 years. Well done!
This is the first one of these lighting tutorials I’ve seen where the narrator says “this is looking great” and it’s actually looking great.
One of the only good lighting tutorials I've seen (that has legitimately good results).
So freaking good. Best explanation of a cove light I've seen. I'm amazed with what you can do with a couple of red-heads, cheap fabric and an 8-year-old camera. Very inspiring.
Camera has nothing to do with it. Everyone puts way to much on “what type of camera” when it has never mattered.......
@@CaptainMyCaptain33 Exactly. Good lighting equalizes many cameras. If you provide enough light for the sensor, and control it properly, the differences become less apparent.
This is incredible quality. Brilliantly explained. You're voice over style means we're never taken away from what's important to be looking at. Well done Rob.
You are the number one explaining the art of lighting. Thanks a lot for your awesome work!
This guy really takes your lighting game up to pro level. Brilliant!! thanks!!
I started watching ur light tutorials. Truly useful and mature approach on lighting no matter what lights are available. The theories are much easier to understand. Thank you!
Thank you! :)
Simply the best cinematography channel on youtube.
Rob I must say this is some quality tutorials you have here. If you ever think of doing a masterclass on lightning you can take my money! You going places buddy keep it up !!
Thank you Ghassan! That's much appreciated!!! :)
Rob is my new connect
This is like a masterclass in cinematography taught by Tom Hardy's brother
haha best comment here
Hahaha I'll take it!
But free
I was thinking it was the love child of Mark Wahlberg and Zach Braff.
@robellis you are indeed a master. Thank you for the superb videos.
Rob Ellis THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO ABOUT CINEMATIC LIGHTING THAT I HAVE EVER WATCHED ON YOU TUBE THANKS
FANTASTIC TECHNIQUE BEAUTIFULLY EXPLAINED - GREAST EXAMPLLES AND PERFECT MOODY MUSIC!!!
"The Vast of Night" has amazing night time lighting. I love that they kept things dark.
Hands down the best lightinig tutorials ive seen so far. Thanks man!
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on RUclips.
Woah thank you so much!
One of the better lighting tutorials I've seen. Dude you're awesome. Thanks!
Thanks Rob. This is extremely useful. Your calm and meditative voice is another big plus. Keep it up and help us all become masters of lighting.
Thanks a lot for your tutorials. It would be great if you could also mention your camera settings, like ISO and aperture.
i have searched a lot for a good lighting tutorial. finally got one , BEST ONE .
This is probably the best lighting tutorial I've ever seen. I need to work with cove lighting on my next shoot, and in 10 minutes I've gone from feeling trepidatious to excited about it. Thank you so much!
One of the best lighting video i've seen
What I like about cove lighting is how it can shape scenes from a wide shot allowing for plenty freedom of movement and the close up work which helps matching shots, love the soft light it produces
Yes definitely!! I only wish I had a bigger space to shoot in here so I could demonstrate that aspect of it!
@@RobEllisCinematographer agreed its the same problem I face is enough space to light stuff. Lighting is always a problem solving nature if anything it trumps most stuff, love the soft graduated look the cove gives just makes everything a little more yummy
the first five minutes of this earned a sub. fantastic work
Your videos about lighting are perfect, thank you for sharing your knowledge in such a professional manner
This is my new favorite cinematography channel. Your videos are brilliant.
one of the best lighting videos i have ever seen on youtube!
How come you don't have millions of subscribers?!? I totally love your tutorials!! I learn so much every time! Thank you!!!
RUclips is difficult haha! Thanks so much man I really appreciate it! :D
I would be interested how you would light a wider, establishing shot to match the shots in this video
gotta head back to deakins' work
This video is EVERYTHING - props to the model
Superb. I'll be showing this to my housemate who always argues with me when I say I want to light the scene as I want it to look and not 'light it bright' and then fix it in post with grading; I don't mind tweaking it in post but we've ended up with night time scenes, actually filmed at night (because it was a night scene) that look like daylight and no amount of grading was going to make the brightly lit room look like it was night!
goddamn this is great info. real cinematography, not just gimmicks or gear-hype. deserves much more than 20k subscribers
Not gonna lie mate, when I first started I thought I WAS watching Roger Deakins clips. You blew me away.
Wow!! That's awesome and such a bloody lovely compliment, thanks so much David!! :D
Great Video...
Like they say, "Light Spaces... Not Faces"...
Thank you for sharing this video. Love it.
Man, thanks for teaching us.
I pray that God reward you abundantly.
Thanks for that creativity. Keep rocking
Thanks again Rob. I'm not even into videography but photography but most of what you're talking about here is applicable to the world of stills. Great stuff and keep up the good work.
Dude you have to keep doing these. They’re so useful for independent filmmakers like myself!
Thanks man, more to come! :)
My Fav Lightning Channel now, KEEP THEM COMING BRO!
Thanks so much man, much appreciated!! :)
I'm swamped at work right now but wanted to say that I came across your channel a few days ago and really want to commend your videos. Huge, huge fan because the visuals are done brilliantly and help bring it all home.
Thank you so much, it's much appreciated! :) good to know the videos are coherent also, always good to hear!!
This video needs more views. An absolute gem. Well done.
Bought your tutorial few days ago and now I really enjoy playing with Davinci! The tutorial was easy to follow. Thank you so much.
This is one of my favorite videos on lighting! Absolutely brilliant thank you!
Best light content ever i see. Thanks, and Hi from Belarus
This lighting is on point. Also, screw the 7 people who gave this a thumbs down. This is great work.
I can’t tell how priceless this seems to me. I am even ready for paid tutorials from you. Along with @Epic Light Media you are really taking the lessons to whole mew level. Glad to learn from actual and real cinematographers .👏🏻
Thank you!! It's very much appreciated :)
Superb vid! To the point and extremely helpful content without the usual overly produced and marketing hype filled kind of approach that is so prevalent these days. More of this kind of thing, PLEASE!!!
This is brilliant stuff Rob. However I have one request. Each time you add or subtract a light, could you use a screen wipe transition between the before and after shot instead of the dissolve. The dissolve tends to dilute the change that has occured on screen whereas a clean wipe (maybe couple of to and fro wipes even) help in highlighting the change more succinctly. Just a polite suggestion. Your videos are some of the best content on RUclips. More power to you.
Best cinematographer on RUclips
Wow thank you so much! :)
you should have so many more subscribers, really amazing content and step by step walk through to make superb lighting and brilliant understanding
Thankyou Rob. This has been an enlightening tutorial; esp. the quietness with which you've presented. See you..
MAN YOU COULD BE A REALLY CRAZY LEGEND You know how to work with cheap budget and make a great work even better than others who uses a lot of money! I hope you have succes in your life!!
i really glad to find your videos, easy, clear and straight to the point, thanks my friend
this shows how powerful lighting is..(can turn a scene into something very cinematic looking). most people think they need the latest cameras to create something interesting this proves it all wrong. nice to see you used a BMCC 2.5k on this.
Some of the best stuff on lighting I have seen so far for a newbie like me. Keep it coming please!
I just used this technique in a recent music video and love it! it's easy to setup, for me I used one complete sheet I didn't have time to cut it to 3 parts, however for full body shots I tend to block the bottom part because I didn't want the floor space to be lit, but for mid body shots this isn't needed. I didn't have arms, so I just used 3 stands and clips and it worked fine. Thanks a ton, I'll always use this now.
These tutorials are wonderful, so many lighting tutorials fall short of actually being cinematic whereas yours really capture mood and atmosphere. Many thanks.
I just binged your channel. When I have the time I’m on it with your grading course which I’m sure is massively valuable thank you so much.
Thanks Erik, hope some of my videos helped! :) and absolutely, thank you for the support!
MAN ! your videos are so in-depth... love them!
Thank you, Rob, for all the work you put in to share your knowledge!
Bro I went to your site, looking for your cinematic lighting course. this is some of the best i've seen this far on youtube, and you have the boldness to show 3 examples....subscribed! and yes I clicked the bell! Top notch.
DUDE! Please keep these videos coming!! They’re so informative and educational! I really wish I could convey how much I appreciate your videos in a comment but man they’re awesome! Thank you!!
Thank you so much man, much appreciated! :)
I'm looking every lightning tutorial i can find since years and I really have to say that you made some of the best videos I have ever seen about this. You really deserve way more followers and views, amazing content!

Thank you so much, such kind words!! Much appreciated, really! :)
Thank you for sharing this information. I’m not a videographer, but this is still essential for me as a full blood photographer.
Have a good one!
