So many great points. I never thought about how the different filter types and brands might be affected by the specific sensors/cameras and the specific lenses. Soooo many combinations. Makes a lot of potential trial and error til you find what works for you.
@@MarkusPix Well, I for one really appreciate you bringing some light to this issue. Simply knowing that there is no one size fits all is good to know, and the reasons why.

I never knew that camera/lens can affect the outcome of using a polarizer. Now I will be comparing and finding what works best with my gear. Thank you for making this video. 😊
It's really fascinating on how things change based on what you place in front of the lens and what colors are being pushed into the sensor via that lens. I've net to use ND filters with photography, but I use it when I film with my C100 MKII all the time. That built-in ND filter system is really nice and I wish a lot more camera manufactures would include those in their bodies.
I'm part of the C100 M2 cult too and I really want to go to 4K without breaking the bank, but once you shoot with built-in NDs it's really hard to go back to the tedium and expense of buying and screwing NDs on every lens you own -
As always straight to the point, thank you Markus. Cpl to hide reflection. If you record around water surfaces like from a small boat you really need some reflection control. Sometimes reflection is an asset, sometimes its annoying.
This is the first video explaining that their will be differences with the filters when used with different cameras and lenses. Too many people just assume its a one size fits all (me being one of them as a complete newbie) I'm glad this was something mentioned that I can think about.
I agree with everything and learnt something, so thank you! I mainly shoot video nowadays. I have tried variable nd's and didn't like them. Most of the time I simply use a polarizer filter and sometimes a x64 nd. Very happy with the results.
Another use for a CPF is to darken down a LED display - e.g. doing an indoors scene with a TV running as part of the picture. With the CPF you can darken down the light of any LED screen - i.e. the TV or home cinema flatscreen - until its brightness harmonizes perfectly with the brightness of the ambient light of the surroundings. Much easier than going through 100 menus to mess up the adjustments of the TV itself, just to stop the damn' thing from overexposing on your photo or in your video. The secret behind this is quite simple - LED displays emit linear polarized light. (Note: this does not hold for individual LEDs - e.g. Xmas chain. But you can turn down an LED display to absolute black. Just hold a CPF - the right way round - in front of your eye and slowly turn it. The TV picture vanishes completely. Really uncanny!)

100% with you Markus!!! Step up/down filters can be REALLY annoying specially if they get stuck to your filter! Happened to me and I don't want to repeat the ordeal of removing the step down filter adapter ever again
I never really thought of different camera and lens combinations having an effect on what filters will work best so that was good to know. I use Nisi Variable ND 1.5-5 and 5-9 filters as I found them to give me the best image quality with no noticeable color cast on lenses I use or noticable X when stopped down. I used to use SLR Magic Variable ND II. It is a Variable ND with a polariser and to get the polarising effect, you just turn the whole filter, which means unscrewing it slightly from the lens. I stopped using it as it slightly softened my images and had a slight warm color cast. I have used polarising filters to remove the reflections on the surface of water so I could get photos and videos of fish and marine life in rock pools. I don't normally use lenses that have a bigger than 77mm filter thread so I use 77mm filters and if necessary, I use Breakthrough CNC step up rings. I'd never use step down rings though due to the high chance of vignetting. I use Variable ND filters rather than fixed NDs because I shoot log video and I want to dial in exposure exactly right with midtones at a certain IRE without changing the shutter speed or aperture and I can't always do that with fixed NDs. I mostly shoot videos' outdoors in natural lighting and the light can change quickly so if I was using fixed NDs and had to switch them out, by the time I changed NDs, the light might have changed and so will my exposure and I'd have to change filters again, but not with a Variable ND.
Thanks for the tips - it looks like for max dramatic effect with a polarizer sky you basically need to shoot at 90 degree to the sun - something I wasn't aware of

Great video. I try to use PL filters always in daylight (when I don't forgot it at home) but not to remove water or sky reflections but to control the light orientation before hit the sensor. Since I use the phone to film and I can't control the light, the AI get very confuse when I have the bright green and the sun is about 45º, making the image to wobble. I don't know why no reviewer spot this issue, but most cameras that the image wobbles in certain light conditions (I saw a clip with AX53 wobbling when the guy zoom (probably it would occour with the AX33-43)), if light direction is the issue, the PL will fix that.

Excellent content. It's been very helpful. For shooting nature videos and views of the ocean (without much movement) with a smartphone would you recommend using a VND and CPL filter in one or just the CPL filter alone? I want to use the CPL filter, but I'm wondering whether the combined version with a VND (that some filters have) would be a better option than using the CPL filter alone. What are your thoughts?
I need to use my pol-filter a lot more 😀. Iam new on your channel and subscriber. I have much to learn and you give great tips 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😀. Have a great day! Jose from Sweden.
Only comment I have would be to maybe try out a magnetic system. You can have one large 82 ND and CP and leave dedicated step up rings on each lens. The rings can be cheaper than a bunch of filters. Maven just came out with a new set that I am trying out. So far Quality is great and functionality is very easy for all my lenses.
Great advice and very helpful especially for a newby. I started off by getting uv protector lenses. The good thing is I only have two lungs at the moment. But I can see where a polarizer could be useful in a lot of my photography and would make sense to use as the lens protector. Also agree that I would rather spend another hundred dollars than to change step up rings. I also almost bought all hoya until I stumbled on your video, For just a little more i'm going to get the recommended brands For polarizing and ND.

Thanks you again for another great video. I always lern so much .

One thing I’ve learned about photography. It’s a cult of bunch of new trend I have the newest camera out.
Cool video, i just enjoyed and learned a lot. Thank you!
