Fear & Anxiety Can Be Behind Tinnitus

  • Fear & Anxiety Can Be Behind Tinnitus. Getting help to feel safe and switch off is a useful background approach to getting better. Going it alone and coping may not be enough... All good body-based therapies can help switch you off and help you settle and feel safe. This is much more than a cognitive thing. Even the most enlightened people need help just being ordinary and switching off. This is something we do in relationship and best in a hands-on kind of way. Then trust and a sense of safety in relationship can build.

God bless this man, 3 months into tinnitus the first 2 weeks were a nightmare. I remember my worst day it was so loud that turning on tap water to wash my face, just the sound of the water running gave me a splitting headache. I got desperate and looked online for answers, then I found Julian's videos and started letting go of the desire for silence. If you're new to this just know the silence can come back but you have to be patient to the point of dropping the desire. It was difficult at first especially during sleep but in the last month the ringing has come down considerably and I will attribute some of that to the advice Mr. Hill suggests. You have to let yourself heal, be good to yourself and find things that can soothe you. Good luck everyone , you're not alone.

Applying and understanding the science behind neuroplasticity. Listening to like minded people on the internet, and reading their books. Weirdly associating the tinnitus symptoms with comfort, and a reminder to look after myself. It came on during a stressful house move last October , so when we moved to our new house and loved it, I associated all the positivity of that with the sound and therefore didn't feel it as a threat. The conscious mind then decides to demote it to the subconscious. I also have a faith.

Hi there. I've been watching your videos for a few months now and they've really spoken to me cause somewhere inside I feel intuitively that what you are saying is true. I have gotten tinnitus a bit less then a year ago after I've started taking SSRI. I've been through the worst break-up in my life and I've gotten into an OCD-anxiety combo that has taken me to total extremes of panic. I've been given SSRI but I had a HUGE HUGE resistance to it. After I've taken a second pill and went checking the forums I read somewhere that the side-effect could be tinnitus so I've sat and listened to my background noise and all of a sudden someone like pressed a button and turned on a super-loud hiss in both of my ears. Like I've "called it in", if you understand. I'm still not rid of it but when some days come and I feel good cause I had good fun the day before, next day I wake up and I can just gently move it away out of my consciousness and it goes quiet. I think the biggest work I have to do is to realax and find a way to not be afraid of it. I tend to forget about it and all is quiet, but something inside me always leads me back to "check up on it"... see if it's still there, and that scares me to death and elevates the sound. I really feel inside me that the answer is in embracing it. Now, I'm trying to somehow weirdly see it as a "friend". "Ok, you hiss so nice... why don't you hiss so I can relax and fall asleep" I say to it. I see that I need to go into this direction and from the positive stories I read this is mostly the case with all of them. I am also doing therapy and solving tons of issues I have and that is giving me foundation for the strength needed in taking life for the horns, with everything that it brings, and riding it like a motha****. Wish you all a wonderful day and know you are not alone and there is a way and you will all eventually get better if you work on it. Hugs from Croatia.

That’s an awesome comment man. Much appreciated because that sounds a lot like myself and what I’m going through. Most of the time I can tune it out but there are the occasional episodes of “Ugh! Why did it get louder? Is it louder than before??” when in reality it’s the same as I’ve dealt with in the past. Are you still on SSRI’s?? I’ve contemplated having them as a standby for REALLY bad anxiety days. But only as a standby.
Thanks again for your comment and keep up the good work 👍

The other day I had an ‘Aha’ moment that the noise in my head was me actually listening to my own FEAR. It really made sense that all my panic and anxiety have been put into a form which is sound/noise in my head. But also that this sometimes intermittent noise (I don’t notice it as much when I’m busy during the day) is recycling/perpetuating that fear and anxiety. This made it more tangible and more of a way to identify with it which makes me more determined to ignore it and keep up with a protocol given by you and Liam to allow the brain synapses to realign and heal.

I got into a real fight recently and tinnitus did not spike even after taking a hit to the head (i imagined it would)
I got it down from non stop ringing to quiet wooshing by taking a year long break from work, learning qigong, tai chi, fasting, moving to a cold region and everyday breath work. What helped me to change my mind about it - my first LSD experience and microdosing magic mushrooms for a month.
Also i experienced a dramatic reduction in volume after shaving my head. I was already going bald and was VERY anxious about it.

I have non-stop tinitus for over a week now and it started 2 or 3 days after a 400 ug LSD trip. I suspect the LSD to be the cause even though i've taken it over 100 times without any problem whatsoever. If i cure my tinitus i dont think i will ever dare to take LSD again, which i'm sad about because i love the stuff. I dont drink, smoke, do drugs, dont even drink coffee... and lsd was the only substance i used for fun & spiritual reasons. Righ now i'm trying all sorts of things like vitamins, reading and meditating. If that dont work i might try mushrooms to see if it can cure my tinitus...haven't taken shrooms in over 10 years and using psychedelics to cure tinitus sounds risky, i dont want to make it worse.

When I was about 13 I was diagnosed with ocd I’m 47 now and over a year ago diagnosed with Tinnitus. I was told Tinnitus was because of loud noise and that’s why I have it. I know Tinnitus and ocd can feed off each other so it’s important to know that with ocd it’s just the brain sending false messages telling you to wash your hands or check something again and again etc or many other things ocd likes to do because people also have just Obsessive ocd and some have the compulsion part of ocd and some both. and if you don’t so ocd causes you to get brain lock on a repetitive thought or to do something but we can overcome it by training our brain to recognize it as just ocd and it’s not me it’s just my brain and I’m gonna be ok and what I need to do now is redirect my attention to something else and let the ocd thought or urge sit there and overtime it gets easier. When you have Tinnitus then anxiety events can cause it to flare and play on ocd. We can overcome this and need to exercise a wonderful mind set. I’m dealing with it now during this lockdown and I also work at a hospital. We can overcome. God bless

Meanwhile i guess the biggest problem i'm having with my tinnitus is my fear of it. Oftenly I`m busy with masking it with other sounds, which sometimes turns out to be stressful. I also kinda put pressure on myself of trying not to hear it. I know that this is actually the opposite of what you should be doing, it just makes it worse the harder you try not to hear it. I don`t know...since a long time I try tellign myself that this sound is not something I need to be afraid of...I mean i'm also not afraid of the sound of my fridge or the air conditioner and so many other sounds because they just dissapear in the background. But my T is not constantly the same...from time to time it changes it's pattern. And the thought that the sound comes somewhere from inside of me and I can't just get away from it doesn't really help either. But I have it now since nearlly 3 years and tried to manage to get through college with it, but sometimes i wish I could just feel free from it and not worrying over it all the time. Because I spend so much time with thinking and worrying over it, that i feel like I'm not able to be truly happy and able to achieve my goals just because of that. But I really don't want the T to have control and the power to influence my life any longer. I don't want to have the urge to fight the T, just live alongside of it till I barely notice that its there...

I have one question, I seen almost all of Your videos numerous of times, I understand how tinnitus works, I take cold showers, massage myself and practice some body based techniques rocking back and forth on all fours, I relax and my stress levels are so much lower now, I fast and eat so much cleaner now and take natural vitamins, and I don’t fear it even though I hear it at times at night. So my question is after just having tinnitus for about a month Do you think that it’ll still get louder even though I pretty much have my body and mind under control? Just because you barely got tinnitus doesn’t mean it’ll get super loud right? It just matters how much you fear and stress? So if you are taking care of yourself and relaxing there’s no need for it to get louder? Please any one can answer. I appreciate it!!! :) God bless you Julian. Please remember that most of your life you haven't heard your heart beat because your brain has filtered this out of your conscious awareness. At the moment your hearing sensitivity has been heightened so that you are now hearing more than you are supposed to due to a temporary imbalance or flaring up in your auditory sensitivity. This can come down again. You are bound to be a bit anxious and over focused on your heart for obvious reasons, but when this subsides and when you can shift your focus elsewhere and drop into a deeper state of calm then this can revert back to normal. I would have some regular bodywork like Craniosacral Therapy to help drop you into stillness, and I would practice some of the techniques on my app www.quietenapp.com which can help shift your focus and get your system to re-set itself. I hope this makes sense. If you'd like to have a session to talk this through in more detail, please get in touch on info@Juliancowanhill.co.uk I charge £90 per hour. Best wishes Julian

    Hi Julian -
I have some issues with the information you just presented.
If what you are saying is true then how do you explain people with tinnitus who live in a relatively calm state (i.e. no constant stress, trauma, good family, good career etc.) and still have tinnitus?
I’ll also use myself as an example as well -
For the last 7-8 months I have followed your advice and more and have seen effectively no improvement in my symptoms.
In those 7-8 months here is what I have done so far:
    25+ cranial sacral therapy sessions
    5 massage sessions
    Yoga 30-60 min/day everyday (I haven’t missed a single day in 6 months)
Ketogenic diet/fasting for 2-3 of those months
I do not drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks, or consume excess sodium
I am in very good physical condition (I work out 3x per week - weightlifting and cardio)
I do not have any illnesses, nutritional deficiencies, or anxiety/depression disorders (I've had multiple physicals from my family doctor to confirm this)
    No “TMJ” issues
    Furthermore:
I do not live in a hostile environment with “bullies”
I love my job - if anything my job makes me a happier person
I have a great group of friends who I can talk to anytime
I have a very caring, supportive family
I am a positive person and I do not go on tinnitus forums and relate to negativity
And yet my tinnitus still rings away at pretty much the same level.
If what you are saying is true then far less people would have chronic tinnitus but that is simply not the case. And I am not saying that nobody gets better - Absolutely not. There are many scientifically documented cases of tinnitus either being attenuated or going completely. I know you are trying to help people by making them feel “safe” but at the same time you have to admit that nobody fully understands tinnitus let alone how the auditory system works yet. The points you make are vast oversimplifications and may not be completely true. I do not want to see other people following your advice with unrealistic expectations only to get disappointed. This is something you really have to address either in another video or in the comments below.
    All the best,

Thanks for your reply. I agree that tinnitus is a mysterious condition and sometimes tinnitus people can present well and seem very calm. As a craniosacral therapist I have tuned into calm systems and it has taken a while to feel into the buzzy charge that may be there, but, even with calm people symptoms can back off. I'm sure you will agree that the fight or flight response can make symptoms worse. Sometimes people can have strong, clear and intense minds, and can be perfectionists who will circle the globe to stop their tinnitus, and do a hundred things to stop it, but they still remain very focused on it. If you watch the video I did recently on the auditory pathways hopefully it becomes clear that the nervous system, if you still have tinnitus, is still choosing to tune into something that normally it would ignore. There are natural inhibitory and ignoring responses in the central nervous system that stop millions of impulses coming into conscious awareness. I wonder if, in your case, you are just very used to tuning into your ears and have settled into a groove of monitoring it and checking up on your ears often. Letting go of tinnitus for you may be a question of learning to catch yourself every time you tune into it and shifting the focus directly into something else like yawning, stretching, having a shower. If it is no longer a bother then are you able to say "So what," to it and focus elsewhere? If you stop reinforcing this temporary pattern with awareness then the whole things becomes boring, ignorable and thanks to neuroplasticity, backs off. Most people get over tinnitus by not paying attention to it and moving on. My advice to you would be to keep a gentle foot in self-care and hands on therapy and to soften the intensity of your practice. What messages are you telling yourself about tinnitus? Are you happy with it? Do you believe it will go for you? Can you be indifferent to it? Can you let tinnitus stop taking centre stage in your life and moving heaven and earth to stop it? Maybe its a question of just enough support rather than too much, enough for you to switch off. By switching off I mean dropping into that not caring, not noticing anything state, just letting go into someone else's support. Thanks once again for your response. Please could you send your question to my email info@juliancowanhill.co.uk and I will certainly do a video on it.

I appreciate your response Julian -
Feel into the buzzy charge? So if I gave you 100 people - 50 with tinnitus and 50 without tinnitus - You could accurately tell the difference between who has it and who doesn’t?
I don’t deny that stress certainly can cause/worsen tinnitus however in my case, that does not hold true, it is fairly consistent in its intensity irrespective or stress levels.
And as I have said in my above response, I am not in any kind “fight-flight-freeze” state etc. I am not a perfectionist driving myself too hard - in fact not so long ago - I took a 4 week vacation to a tropical paradise and didn’t think about tinnitus, therapy, massage, or working out.
Regarding shifting the focus/perceptions off tinnitus, I think you may be right here. I think I do tend to focus on my tinnitus too much. And that can definitely improve. However, simply not focusing on your tinnitus is no guarantee of it making it heal faster. One of my co-workers has it (pretty loudly too I might add) and he never focuses on it nor does it bother him. But he still has it. I did watch your video on the auditory system. However, it may or may not be completely accurate. There is no scientific evidence backing what you are saying. As I have said before, even the top ENTs/researchers in the world do not have tinnitus or the exact science of hearing figured out yet.
I think I won’t go for any more hands on therapy - if it hasn’t worked in 8 months chances are another 8 months aren’t really going to help.
Messages I am telling myself about tinnitus?
“This can go, but it could take some time” “people have gotten better from it, why can’t you?” “this is annoying when I am trying to focus on my work in a silent room” “What if I do everything Julian says but it doesn’t better, then what?”
      Am I happy with it?
      Umm… no?
Do I believe it will go?
I believe it will - I have seen many people make a full recovery from all kinds of tinnitus (noise induced, stress induced, medication etc.). Being a young guy and living a healthy active lifestyle puts me in a very good position I think to make a decent recovery. I think it could be a long journey but time will tell. I will definitely work on further taking my focus off it as you say.
I appreciate the work that you are doing for everyone who has this thing (especially the people who have it badly - thankfully mine is fairly mild in comparison). I just feel it necessary to speak up when information that may only be a partial truth is being passed off as fact. Again thank you again for putting out all your content. Wishing you the best and everyone who is going through a tough time a speedy recovery.
      All the best,

Yes. I give a value out of 10 at the beginning of a session and at the end for nervous system activation when I am giving a cranial session eg 7-5 to note how much a persons system has settled. When we get down to 1 or 2 the T is commonly low or gone. After 7500 hours of clinical hands on experience over 20 years of treating people this becomes second nature. A lot of my information is drawn from the latest really good book on Tinnitus called: Tinnitus : A Multidisciplinary Approach
David Baguley, Gerhard Andersson, Don McFerran, Laurence McKenna. Please be specific about the areas you want to know the scientific references for and I will provide them.

@@samtoo1590 Hey sorry to hear that, BUT I have a challenge for you: try a 40 minutes guided body scan session and compare the tinnitus before and after the session. Is it really the same or is the sound a little more subtle? Maybe it does not work the first time. And it's important that you actively focus away from the tinnitus on your body. Would be interested to know if you notice a slight shift. All the best!

I understand that stress can make T worse but , T, isn't entirely psychological, it can be physiological. There are so many variables that make my T worse, i can't pin point which one. TCM says T is 'cause of weak kidneys. What i understand about TCM is also that Taoist claim excessive masturbation/sex can deplete yin which they say also weakens the kidney. Maybe it's dopamine depletion as you stated. Everything's connected.

It is deeply irresponsible to say this as it shows a lack of understanding. What's worse is that a person saying this has no idea of the impact of saying this to someone has. Because tinnitus is stress-related it is temporary and comes down when your stress levels come down. If this doctor phoned up patients he or she had spoken to and checked out the impact he or she had had on them a week later this behaviour would stop immediately. It is like pushing someone over a cliff. The best way to make someone with tinnitus worse is to have them believe there is nothing they can do about this. This is damaging behaviour and shows a lack of compassion. Showing people how to come out of fight or flight and settle into a safer state of nervous system function eg balanced parasympathetic activation causes tinnitus to pipe down. Why push people off a cliff when you can guide them to useful information that puts them on the path to recovery. People in positions of medical authority should not be doing this. It shows a lack of education. Knowledge on how the fight or flight response affects the auditory system has been around for decades thanks to Jastreboff's model. Anyone treating tinnitus needs to understand this basic physiological response in the auditory system and stop damaging people with negative bombshells that are totally avoidable!
