YES.... It's that simple. I have a '17 Outback. The "pins" on the sides of the box needed some leverage. The sides of the box press inwards. pull the box downward as you do this.
To clarify, the cover shows an up arrow, and the word UP. This must simply help dumb bells know which direction the cover goes on, but isn't that stupid since the cover can only go on in that direction.... This should not be confused with the air flow direction which is downward. This video confirmed my hunch, the arrow on the filter should point down. I don't know why Subaru put an UP arrow on the cover. For clarity, they should have put the words AIR FLOW and a down arrow. As we saw done in this video, Brucey, I'd appreciate it if you gave your agreement to this post, it helped clear some confusion for me, and I'm sure it will be helpful to others.
Oh they made it so much easier than the 'Gen 3' Thanks Bruceyyyyy. I went out and bought a Filtrete Home Furnace 1500 Micron filter to cut all my cabin filters from. I lose some air pressure, but looks almost as if the new blower systems could rip it, in the good way. From Firebat.
Bruceyyyyy with five Ys thanks for all the how to guide. I have 2017 OB with eyesight, can you do a vid on brake jobs or just give me some tips on how to. I done brakes on Honda, toyota, mustang etc.
Great video - The dampner popped off on the bottom and the top. Any idea how to get the top part back into place? Also don't buy the filter from an auto parts store get it from AMAZON because you'll pay twice as much!
I hadn't heard of this issue so I went and looked at mine and think it might be on a similar post to the bottom as it is inside the dash. Could you use a flat head screwdriver or butter knife to slide up next to it and push it back on? Hopefully you don't have to disassemble the dash to get it back on. Let us know how you fix it!
I know right? Such a rip off. We had one in our 2010 Forester and I swear it had NEVER been changed. The presale check list for the vehicle stated it had been changed along with the spark plugs. I pulled the filter and plugs...nope! I took that presale sheet that claimed they had serviced everything on that list and brought the car back to the dealer ( it was a week after we purchased it) . I went through the list and MADE them go back through it and DO EVERYTHING they stated had been done. I told them I wanted the plugs, filters and all the items they replaced available for me to inspect. I also informed them I wouldnt be making ANY payments until everything on that list was DONE. I never trust a dealership to say and do what they said, because they ALL lie. My brothers BRAND NEW dodge truck need a 4 wheel alignment right from the showroom floor. Yup! The wheels were out of alignment FROM THE FACTORY!
Your manual gives directions for an OEM Subaru filter. The instructions for the STP filter are on the box. Watch the video again and pay more attention. An up arrow has nothing to do with air flow direction. An air flow arrow should point down.
How can something as silly as an arrow be so damn complicated. Subaru goes up for whatever reason and then all the others reference air flow. freaking crazy.
The $34.95 "special" coupon for cabin air replacement from my dealer doesn't look so good now. I wonder what flat rate their mechanics get paid for doing this. Thanks, Brucey!
My local dealer charges $100 for P&L(!) but the service guy quietly showed me how to do it and sent me to the Parts Dept. It's been a while since I did it though and this was an excellent refresher on the How-To.
Crisp, Clear, Step-By-Step instructions!! Well Done!
Exactly
Nice explanation of the air flow arrow. It's a common thing most replacement videos miss.
Glad I could help
Short and sweet! I love that you didn't add a lot of fluff and got right to it. Thank you!

Great video. As others have mentioned, short, direct, and to the point. Shows what to do without a lot of BS. Thank you.
Thank you. I did this in a dark garage, I watched the video and felt blindly. Thanks for being my eyes! Great quick simple video
direct, and to the point. glad you showed us with one hand, as that proves how simple this is. thank you.

It's really confusing huh?
The best demo of this process BY FAR! Thank you!
Simple is easy, easy is fun! THANKS for the SIMPLE and yes it was EASY! Took longer to get the filter than it did to replace it!

That airflow part saved my butt
Nicely done.....no BS....nice camera work so we can all learn. Thank you.
Thanks for posting, Brucey! Have yet to do my mine yet but now I am educated!
Great video. That said, its a damper (damps movement), not a dampener (makes things damp).
Thanks! Worked on my 2019 Impreza, did it in real time with you too!
Really good instructions. You just save a lot of people a lot of money.
THANK you for sharing.... ;-) Great demonstration for DIYs - short to the point step by step.. !
This is best video explaining how to do it yourself for a dummy like me
Nice video. Any video about change the cabin fan blower?
Changed mine today...THANK YOU!! EASY!!
By the way, mine is a charcoal activated, should I have had the dark side up or down? Might need to flip it.
I'm not sure. What model is it?
I found out, just needed to read the directions that came with the filter..LOL Thank you!
I have the same filter, did you put w/ the words upside down or right side up?>
I believe upside down. There is an arrow pointing for the correct direction.
Bruceyyyyy with five Ys thanks for all the how to guide. I have 2017 OB with eyesight, can you do a vid on brake jobs or just give me some tips on how to. I done brakes on Honda, toyota, mustang etc.
Front should be pretty similar to every other car.
Rear needs a special tool to work with the park brake.
How many miles are on your 2017?
I just changed mine out thanks for the video
Exactly what I needed. Thanks for the video
If it is dirty on the top of your filter then your air flow is going down. The air filter arrow should be pointing down
Awesome video!
Can't wait to see what you get into next!
Thank you! Your video made it easy peasy!!
Question: if there can be leaves and twigs on top of the filter, does that not indicate the airflow direction is top to bottom?
Watched it again, that is what you did. Thanks! This is helpful.
Saved me $80 thank you

thanks actually I fixed it
What did you do?
there is a nub that the upper part will snap into so I just snapped it into place and you'll be able to do when the whole glove box comes off,

Thanks, now I can do it myself!
It appears you put the filter in upside down? My manual said the arrow should be up.
It's confusing but the OEM is up and aftermarket is down.

Good tutorial
Thank-you for your time and effort

Thanks Man. I like simple vids!
Thanks for watching! Hope it helped. This is about as simple as car maintenance can get.
thank you!
Very nice video 👏
Big help - thanks
Perfect
Thank you
Perfect. You just skipped the part where you get all the wife's crap out of the way before starting. That's like 75% of the job.
Happy wife, happy life. (:
Just saved me 32$ (:
Dealership wants $120 to replace my filter (2019 Outback)
Looks like you can pay yourself $110!
Its also a good place to stash something. until the dogs find it....never mind....
☝️👍
You so funny
Thanks Fam.
