Mojang and Microsoft's Minecraft is WILDLY popular. Every console, Switch, PS5, Xbox, PCs everywhere have this thing. The Survival Crafting Genre of games has taken off like crazy and it's all thanks to this little thing. SO here's a video about the Clones, the Ripoffs and the Alternatives to Minecraft that have come out over the last... uh, 14 years. That's too much.

Howdy! It's almost May, meaning 2023 is nearly halfway over and that is terrifying. BUT IM HERE, with a new video going WAY into a subject that I never thought we'd have enough games for. But well... I guess it happened. If y'all know any other Minecraft Clones worth looking at, lemme know down below!
Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go play Vintage Story. This thing rules.

The cool thing about Ace of Spades was that structures had physics, so you could shoot the footing of an enemy cover or base or whatever, and it would fall down. You could even dig under an entire mountain and the mountain would collapse.

It was a fairly basic Minecraft clone for Mobile devices but it had some pretty cool ideas like sliding blocks, trampoline blocks and corner blocks. You could also color liquids any way you wanted. There was a lot of fairly impressive user generated content too. One thing that always stuck with me with that game was that it had a weirdly eerie vibe to it. You couldn't die, but there was barely any music so it was just very silent most of the time. There where Monsters too, but they didn't really do anything. Really enjoyed this video - Minecraft was a massive part of my childhood (started with Pocket Edition Lite!) and it continues to be essentially the only game my twin (who's almost completely uninterested in gaming) plays with me even semi-consistently, so I have tons of nostalgia for that early 2010's era.
I unfortunately do not own Minecraft itself right now, but one clone I did stumble upon that I think does a great job is Minetest - it's free and open source and was originally made because the developer wanted to basically reverse-engineer Minecraft to see how it worked - and what you download is actually a whole voxel game engine, with a number of different gameplay styles available on the website. The basic game that comes with the engine is your standard Minecraft Classic-style builder, but there's two straight-up clones of Minecraft's survival mode (updated as new features come out!), along with a basic Sim City lite game, a Bomberman clone, a SevTech Ages-styled tech-advancement focused game, a couple puzzle titles, and more. Someone even tried making a 3D platformer!

My favorite Minecraft alternative is Colony Survival. Don't let its generic name mislead you, its gameplay loop is fun. It's a colony survival sandbox where you grow your colony while making sure it can survive þe night. Þere is a tech tree þat adds to what you can assign your colonists to. Þere are also upgrades to guards þat increase power and range at þe expense of speed and resource cost. It's still in early access on Steam, but is already a great experience. Until your colony gets overwhelmed by zombies and is completely killed off, requiring all of your food stores to restore because you progressed too fast. And when you try getting connections between settlements þat are more þan roads wiþout realizing þe only horizontal land transportation requires a copious amount of infrastructure since it has zero verticality and can't turn. Or want to add doors to your buildings. Or cross water. Þankfully þe next major update is a building update and boats have been promised.

One voxel game with guns that I recall is called Blockstorm if I recall correctly. It had similar gameplay to Ace Of Spades, in particular I believe the disowned fully published one. The big thing that made this interesting is that you could customize your character, the mech that the game apparently has, the zombies in the co op mode, and I believe even maps. This is cool but it unfortunately doesn’t have a player base.
Edit one kind of sub genre of voxel building games is the space voxel game. This genre started with a game called Space Engineers, and has plenty of similar games itself. The best one I can think of is Starship EVO, which was originally called Skywanderers.

I'm honestly beyond surprised that Pixel Gun 3D wasn't mentioned in this video considering that it was one of those Minecraft + zombie mode + guns + deathmatch games that actually pulled it off REALLY WELL for a good while before going pay to win. I swear whenever Ihear one of the copyright free songs that were used in the game's maps there's usually lots of comments from people who were fond of PG3D.
PG3D had a campaign (Which I don't think was ever finished), multiplayer pvp, a zombie mode, and the original maps for it were surprisingly great

God I loved guncraft so fucking much. How did austin miss the fact you could create your own custom guns from scratch modeled from the ground up to be literally anything you wanted? You could shoot people with cow shaped guns or whacky tentacle snipers, If you could dream it you could make it. That was the biggest draw of the game and I've never seen a system like it replicated since. Take a look at the workshop to see all those intricately user modeled and detailed weapons which could then be shared to anyone.
You could also make "prefabs" which were whatever you wanted so you could create giant statues of yourself in the middle of the map if you wanted. It was all extremely cool and unique

Block Story is such a gem in my eyes. Despite being a little awkward at times, it really does merge the idea of Minecraft with RPG elements very well. Being able to upgrade your stats by leveling up and even raising several rideable pets to fight by your side is very satisfying. There's also tons of quests to complete that unlock new recipes from better tools to a full on mech suit.
Sadly, theres no multiplayer but for those who enjoy a solo experience I'd definitely recommend you to give it a try.

Although the ads are way too crazy, the video is good. There are so many Minecraft clones that i never heard of. There is another Minecraft clone that nobody seems to talk about called Survivalcraft. It’s a pretty good clone and the game runs smoother. Minecraft may be a bit laggy sometimes, and bedrock edition on IOS devices will lock up your device if you put your device to sleep and try to play the game. The only way to fix it is to perform a hard reset. Survivalcraft doesn’t have this problem, but there are many differences like the game is more geared towards nature, not everything is a cube, and there are no generated structures.

I have roughly 300 hours Vintagestory. It is a good game, but the only thing it shares with Minecraft is the look.
Overall, it is much closer to Don't Starve than Minecraft. The first winter is spent sitting in your house, trying not to starve or freeze to death. Your food spoils, so you have to get a lot of it and find a way to make it last, including airtight underground chambers, salt and just charring pies until they are almost inedible.
And hope you got enough firewood, because days are a lot shorter during the winter and it will be risky to get more. PLENTY of time to craft at home, or just take it all in. It runs in wallpaper mode.

Holy shit I started watching this and was like "it would be cool if he talked about Vintage Story in a video" and then it came up out of nowhere!
I've been tired of vanilla MC for a long time and when I found VS it just finished the job and I haven't played vanilla MC even once since. The game is really good and it deserves a lot more attention, and lately it seems to have been getting it as me and my friends have started encountering VS players in the wild which is cool to see.
The game just had its biggest update ever adding more than 1000 new items to the game in total, and the game also has really good mod support that is continuing to improve. If any game could ever _really_ become a "Minecraft killer" it would definitely be Vintage Story I think.
It really _is_ what MC's survival mode _should_ have been. Pitch black nights like the old days of MC, enemies that aren't pushovers (even just a simple wolf can kill you in only a couple of hits without armor), cool Lovecraftian mechanics, and multiple different in-world crafting mechanics for things like tools and pottery to keep things varied and interesting as you progress.

I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention "3d Dot Heroes", it was developed by "From Software" & "Silicon Studios" and originally came out for the PS3. It was actually pretty cool game that while was clearly inspired by Minecraft did more than enough to stand out as it's own game, with a unique story and some cool gameplay mechanics. Definitely something to check out if your looking for a Mincraft fix but are tired of Minecraft, or if your just interested in a cool Sandbox RPG with a interesting story and mechanics.
Personally, I sorta wrote it off as a Minecraft clone...But was kind of drawn to it and when I played I was really surprised to see how different and how fun it actually turned out to be. I'm so happy that I did choose to get it and play it back then.
But I just wish it was more popular and successful, so it could have a chance at getting a sequel which I don't think will ever happen unfortunately as the game didn't really do well, even though it had decent reviews and grew a sizeable cult following for it after a while. I guess like myself people just wrote it off as a generic cash grab clone of Minecraft, when it really isn't and has so much more to offer.

I was pretty upset but I kept playing, only to eventually reach a point where I realized how heavily it leaned into the pay-to-win part of f2p games the further you progressed. It took literal days or weeks to grind for gear that was for the most part just cosmetic, and I simply didn't have the time or patience for that. So I unfortunately decided to quit
