@Jyniguunx yz I liked the 4Kids cast, but I never felt like they truly embodied the characters like the Adventure OGs did. With 4Kids, it was like they were just playing a character, until like 2008. The 4Kids dudes definitely suit their characters better than the current cast, though. (Well, besides Rouge's VA... Lol.)

I love the way Eggman and Tails interact with each other. Eggman is struggling with a concept of his grandfather that's foreign to him, rethinking very prominent moments of his life, and Tails, like the kid that he is, responds childishly, but well-meaning. I think it's wonderful that in this scene Eggman doesn't become upset over this, doesn't even try to go into more detail to get Tails to understand. He relents, and chooses to let go of the situation for now in exchange for some long awaited peace between each other. Seeing all of them enjoy each other's company, no matter how small, feels so wonderful honestly, especially after everything they all went through.
I feel Eggman becoming a villain again shows he realize he blame humanity for killing what family he had left that only fuel him a new reason for hating humanity like his grandfather
Its even more tear-jerking in the Japanese voiceovers, where he says "Adios...Shadow The Hedgehog." Calling back to Maria's last words to Shadow. Either way, both voiceovers nail the emotion of this line fantastically.
Eggmans response to Tails is sort of the first time he treats him like a child and not an adversary. Eggman starts out deep with his question, and after Tails response he realizes that 1) Tails doesn't understand the scope of his question and 2) Tails childlike optimism is a better response to the situation than the sad reflection Eggman intended to do.
Yeah, good point. I kind of like how we sometimes see a more human side to Eggman like in Frontiers where he not only admits that he admires Sonic despite trying to destroy him, but genuinely cares for Sage. He may be evil, but he's still got some human elements to him.
I mean it's a blue talking cartoon hedgehog. I don't think they really need a deep story for each game. At least not one that really takes it self seriously.
I know people dont like tails response to what eggman said but i find it perfect. Eggman sees the simplicity of the situation that since he worked together with people instead of against them they where able to accomplish so much. That slight "Your right" just to me carries so much weight and if this was the ending of the sonic series, that would be the point Eggman changes his ways

I feel like even though they are basically equal in intelligence more or less eggman overestimates Tails’ actual maturity and experience Tails hasn’t been let down by Sonic like eggman has been let down by his grandpap, I think it’s a good way of highlighting the drastic differences between the two characters despite them being essentially the same mechanically and intellectually Eggman sort of thought he could have a existential/philosophical discussion with Tails but is swiftly reminded that he’s still young and innocent. Must have been a let down for him as Tails is probably the character he can relate to the most, id guess it was eggman that approached him first as well Which is why he sort of hesitated before he said “...you’re right” lol idk if it’s actually true I just think this game got the characters that well written but it might just be awful translation 😂
I know, can you imagine Jim Carrey saying these lines while interacting with Tails? Like he's turning over a new leaf? That would be the perfect ending for Carrey's Robotnik.

This game WAS my childhood...Shadow dying is symbolic to me, of how my childhood is now dead, and all the characters try to come to terms with Shadow's death, like I have to come to terms with how that part of my life is now over, and I can never go back...Sayonara...childhood...rest easy...
Thanks for putting words to it, I discovered this game going into second grade when I moved into a new neighborhood. Didn't have many friends other than the neighbor so I really became invested in gaming and this game in particular became such a part of me that I didn't know what to do after I finished it to where I was depressed for a little because I grew attached to Shadow and the game as a whole. I'm 25 now and it just hits even harder that my childhood is done and over with, and your comment made me understand what I was feeling, thanks for that. Be well please.

No other game in the franchise has managed to strike the perfect balance between "edgy"/dark and fun-loving like SA2 did, and I doubt one ever will. This game's tone hit the sweet spot to be able to pull of an ending this bittersweet with a story about a blue hedgehog that runs fast.
I guess your right. I wouldn’t really consider the highlight of sonic adventure 1 to be it’s edginess, and unleashed’s werehog is doubly received. The only other game that has a balance as good would be Sonic 3 & Knuckles, although SA2 still seems to more quickly approach it’s climax

When a reimagined version of this was made, they took out that Dialogue and made him say "I believe that your father was angry because something he loved was taken from him. I guess him and Shadow aren't so different after all." Something like that. And they redid a few other lines that were amazing.
"Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog". I love this line. It shows that Sonic is saying farewell, not to an enemy or a hero, but to a friend. He is saying that Shadow doesn't need to be the ultimate life form or be stuck in the past, but he can be who he wants. And with all Shadow went through, the "the hedgehog" at the end, letting him know that he doesn't need to fill a big role but just be who he wants, is beautiful.
not only that; he dropped the "fake hedgehog" name calling as well. Remember that sonic was the one to call shadow that first but here he finally acknowledged shadow.
Ok...this is kinda embarassing to admit, but I just beat SA2 like less than 5 mins ago...and I cried so much at this cutscene. My face is still wet. I even knew they brought him back in Heroes, but this just had so much emotion. Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog.
@TT7 No thats the real one. He remembers how Rouge loves jewelry in heroes which is a specific detail to remember. Also the Final Boss of Shadow The Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman even states that he is the real one from Sa2. He recovered his body after the fall and gained Amnesia. Hope that helps^^

If he was an android, it would have been noted by now and oh yeah almost forgot do you remember when Rouge at the beginning of Team Darks story where she actually finds Shadow in the capsule? If he was an android, why is this specific Shadow locked up in a secret room but there is a whole room filled with them later in their story? Why is he not in there with the others? He must be special some how.
That's the difference between classic games like this and the new Sonic games. Colors, Generations, Lost World, Forces. None of them have actual genuine stories written with emotion. It's just a cheap good vs bad plot and poor writing. And it's not like they CAN'T come up with a good plot like the ones we used to have, it's that they're simply not choosing to.
As a kid, I had always wondered why Shadow had to die while Sonic was fine. It wasn't until I was older that I realized he was too tired. From fighting the Biolizard on his own to using his first Super Transformation, to fighting the Final Hazard with Sonic, and finally stopping the Space Colony ARK via Chaos Control with Sonic. It was all too much on his body to handle back to back, especially when we see him using his Air Shoe's thrusters to maintain his flight in his last push to stop the Space Colony ARK.
Well, he uses Chaos Control as he falls back to Earth. You even see it. When I was younger, I always noticed that and wondered how no one noticed that. Sonic was practically next to him and shoulda felt him teleport. Shadow was even still in Super form at that.

So, the following movies will deepen yourself in lore and, late, maybe we can get a story based in Adventure 2; more well planned, with better CGI, elaborated speeches, etc, etc.
These credits give me a theory. I think this is the end of the Sonic timeline because they are all friends. This might have meant to be the end of the franchise, but the idea that these characters realize their full potential is a big hint that this is the end of the Sonic timeline. Also, Shadow gets killed off, thus leaving more significance. But what sparks this is the conversation between Tails and Dr. Eggman. Dr. Eggman realizes that teamwork can help anyone get through anything. Rouge says that she is thinking of something other than jewels. Now that all the characters reconcile, it's strange that, in future games, Dr. Eggman is an antagonist and Shadow is a recurring character. Thus, Sonic Adventure 2 ends the Sonic timeline.
The shadow in heroes, 06, etc. is an android made by eggman. Or maybe he survived the fall? I don't know that part confuses me. What I do know is this isn't the end of the timeline. This is the game shadow debuted in so how would sonic and co. know about him in future games? Sorry, but your theory is wrong.

If Shadow dies in one game, and lives on in another, the game must end the timeline. Eggman also realizes that teamwork can get you further than evil can.
Yale Kolin Unfortunately that would also be incorrect. It's revealed in Shadow the Hedgehog (during the final fight, if you stay in there a good while) that Robotnik had a robot go out and save him. Which is why, in Sonic Heroes, he's in a lab along with Omega. He's not a clone, but rather the original seen here in SA2. Feel free to search the revelation yourself. It's not the most dramatic answer, but it explains things.

You know, Gerald Robotnik's story is tragic...I can't imagine feeling so wronged by the world that I'm willing to kill everyone who lives on it. And all he wanted to do was save his Granddaughter from dying of a degenerative illness. Then again, he is Eggman's grandfather. Perhaps a penchant for psychosis runs in the family, and we just got lucky with Eggman not being an omnicidal lunatic.

Definitely the end of the consistent narrative through-lines in the Sonic series. Heroes functions as a bit of an epilogue that ties up loose ends, but I definitely think the "Sonic story" ends around here. The Chaos Emeralds, the Knuckles Clan, Chaos power, everything works seamelessly together from Sonic 1 up to here. That isn't to say that later games have been bad, I think Unleashed's story is great, but if I had to tell the Sonic story, it'd he from Sonic 1 to SA2. The "Chaos Control" Saga.
This short version of live and learn is just so perfect. The way it just jumps in knowing what it's about and kinda let's the mind ride off in the distance with the memory of a badass hero and end of an epic adventure as a new one shall come another day. It's such an end credit song and just wraps all you've been through up with a bang and might even bring down the pit in the chest feeling after the scene prior and even gives some empowerment due to how epic it was during the fight. The best last hurrah of the sonic franchise and the rock along side it.
I don't get the people who say that Tails ruined the moment. What do you expect a 8 year old child to say to such complected question. Even if he is a genius, Tails is still a kid. He may understand robotics, Maths and stuff but that doesn't make him think like a adult. And while Eggman was thinking about something serious, Tails reminded him that maybe right now for the best is to think about the present. (If I have mistakes, just to make you know that I'm not a English speaker)
But his phrase makes no sense.,Eggman thinks about Gerald”s motives and Tails says “ oh necer mind good guys win that’s all that matters” . Besides Taiks is a genius. He maybe 8 but he thinks like an adult. Remember the moment when Eggman presumably killed Sonic? He was ready to fight he was ready to DIE. He’s more than just a kid he’s mature.
This was hands down one of the BEST Sonic games. The voice acting was great, Knuckles sounded more serious than he does now, Tails actually sounds better when voiced by an actual kid rather than a grown woman, Sonic's voice fits with his character, and Deem Bristow nailed it with the lines for Eggman. The story was good, the cutscenes were great, and the ending is just the cherry on top. Its a shame that the new Sonic writers can't come up with anything good and basically trashed the whole franchise.
That "Sayonara,Shadow the Hedgehog." hits harder when you learn that during the game's development, this was planned to be the last sonic game and at the same, the last sega game. So that Sayonara is actually Sayonara to sonic series. And the ending screen says this as well in my opinion.

This really would've been an appropriate sad ending to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. But then... Sonic Heroes. Which, wasn't really a bad game, overall, but it could've been better.
Sonic Heroes was a great game but yeah, this game's story was superior. It was cool that Metal Sonic ended up being the villain but it was just basically taking Engman's role, so not that deep. This ending was pretty touching despite the cheese factor but every sonic is like that haha

I can remember... When I was a child I just started to cry. And I said: "That's so sad! That's so sad!" and this and the tears came out so automatically I couldn't even control it by myself. I wonder why that was so... controlling me out of the blue? At this time I always had to go out because I would cry again until puberty hit. I grew up and didn't cry anymore. If I would play it again from the beginning I can't tell if I would cry.
I always get a lump in my throat when I watch stuff like this, Man I miss being a kid in the generation when games were made out of pure heart and love for the gaming industries fans.
Comparing the stories of the modern games like Colors, Generations, Forces and Lost World to this, it doesn't even come close. Sonic used to be so much more emotional and genuine... now it's all just surface level "hero beats villain" stories and bad jokes. What happened? I guess we'll always have Sonic Adventure 2.

The fact that this could have been the last Sonic game really made this hit hard. It's one of the only game moments that made me genuinely cry, and I can't wait to do the same in December at the theater.
I legit just beat the game a few minutes ago on my PC, and man, this ending gave me chills. This scene where all of our heroes slow down and show their more human side for even a brief moment is just a wonderful ending. Eggman expressing to Tails how much of an inspiration his grandfather was to him and why he was driven to be a great scientist. Sonic mourning Shadow's death after he did everything to save humanity from destruction. Even the cutscenes after the credits (5:31) without any audio made me emotional, especially after following Shadow's story, a guy who did everything he possibly could to fulfill the wishes of his only dear friend. I didn't have the privilege of playing through SA2 when I was younger on any SEGA console; I literally had my first experience with the game this past week, 20+ years after it was made Lmao. But despite not having any childhood nostalgia towards the game, I can easily see why it's one of the most beloved Sonic games in the series. Despite being flawed, it's still a game that radiates ambition through its edgy yet emotional story, kickass soundtrack, and intense gameplay (...mainly Sonic's and Shadow's). Unlike many other Sonic titles, SA2 is more than just a game. It's a whole new experience in general.
2:53 man this hits so hard, and the music makes it 1000x more amazing it’s actually majestic to my ears. From shadow and Sonic working together to shadow fulfilling Maria’s wish to the dialogue between all the characters.. and again, the music.
I kind of wish Sonic would've shed one tear when he turned away from Amy, to mirror Shadows. Especially since they go out of their way to show how much this effects him and he sort of swats Amy away when he says "It's nothing." The way the cameras positioned almost seems like they intended to.

Even though I enjoyed SA1 more, SA2 had a satisfying ending even after playing through those difficult levels. Also, it's sad to imagine if the Space Colony ARK is abandoned in space.

Just beat this game on the Dreamcast with my brother. We played SA1 and SA2 back to back… these games despite their flaws feel authentic and captures 3D Sonic, in my opinion, better than any of his modern outings. They hit a raw emotional angle, besides just nostalgia. SA2 is a dark game but still feels enjoyable to sit back and play and watch these cutscenes unfold unlike what Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 had in store for us years later…. This ending cutscene (adapted in Sonic X) is even more powerful and tear jerking, heck the entire SA2 saga was well executed. Still, I like the game version too - the final fight against Biolizard and the entire level before it plus the high stakes story involving a doomsday plot capped off by a heroic sacrifice makes this game feel like a captivating one to have beaten and one that could’ve nicely ended the Sonic franchise. If only lol. This should stand as the last game in the series timeline. But then Heroes and StH continue Shadow’s story…. lessening SA2’s emotional ending somewhat.

Sonic: “Created…the ultimate life form…” i’ve watched this scene a million times and i’ve never really thought anything of this line, but i saw it written out today and it got me thinking. is this sonic reflecting on his own origins, and what that means for him? considering sonic and shadow are clearly,,,like exactly the same. maybe this was the obvious meaning and i should have realized what the line meant the first time, just thought it was interesting that it took me this long to think about! for whatever reason up to now this line only occurred to me as sonic musing over the adventure itself.
Interesting thought. My assumption since I was a kid was always that he's just reflecting on Gerald himself, and why he made Shadow. Heck, even though it was kind of horrible, it does work as a slight setup for Shadow the Hedgehog (the game). Creating Shadow the ultimate lifeform wouldn't make much sense of you planned to destroy the world all along, and as that game reveals he didn't plan to destroy the world with the Ark and Shadow was made to defend Earth.
The English translation doesn't make it that clear but shadow still does call sonic the ultimate lifeform, and the master emerald shrine is recreated with the biolizard which looks like chaos while shadow looks like super sonic, explaining both the mistaking of him for sonic and the line. Sonic was the ultimate lifeform shadow was based on. Works both literally but also symbolically as sonic became the ultimate lifeform by always moving forward, which shadow couldn't do. He was brought to his end by the past he couldn't run away from. In the end, he was the faker and couldn't live up to his creator's expectation. But in the following games he left behind his past and old purpose and gained a new understanding of himself, truly becoming the ultimate lifeform in his own right. Sonic is actually kinda deep wtf

I love the way Eggman and Tails interact with each other. Eggman is struggling with a concept of his grandfather that's foreign to him, rethinking very prominent moments of his life, and Tails, like the kid that he is, responds childishly, but well-meaning. I think it's wonderful that in this scene Eggman doesn't become upset over this, doesn't even try to go into more detail to get Tails to understand. He relents, and chooses to let go of the situation for now in exchange for some long awaited peace between each other. Seeing all of them enjoy each other's company, no matter how small, feels so wonderful honestly, especially after everything they all went through.

When sonic says "sayonara...shadow, the hedgehog" I can just feel goose bumps for how well that delivery was.
Its even more tear-jerking in the Japanese voiceovers, where he says "Adios...Shadow The Hedgehog."

Either way, both voiceovers nail the emotion of this line fantastically.

Eggmans response to Tails is sort of the first time he treats him like a child and not an adversary. Eggman starts out deep with his question, and after Tails response he realizes that
1) Tails doesn't understand the scope of his question and
2) Tails childlike optimism is a better response to the situation than the sad reflection Eggman intended to do.

Yeah, good point. I kind of like how we sometimes see a more human side to Eggman like in Frontiers where he not only admits that he admires Sonic despite trying to destroy him, but genuinely cares for Sage. He may be evil, but he's still got some human elements to him.

Eggman sees the simplicity of the situation that since he worked together with people instead of against them they where able to accomplish so much. Tails hasn’t been let down by Sonic like eggman has been let down by his grandpap, I think it’s a good way of highlighting the drastic differences between the two characters despite them being essentially the same mechanically and intellectually
Eggman sort of thought he could have a existential/philosophical discussion with Tails but is swiftly reminded that he’s still young and innocent. Must have been a let down for him as Tails is probably the character he can relate to the most, id guess it was eggman that approached him first as well

This game WAS my childhood...Shadow dying is symbolic to me, of how my childhood is now dead, and all the characters try to come to terms with Shadow's death, like I have to come to terms with how that part of my life is now over, and I can never go back...Sayonara...childhood...rest easy...

Thanks for putting words to it, I discovered this game going into second grade when I moved into a new neighborhood. Didn't have many friends other than the neighbor so I really became invested in gaming and this game in particular became such a part of me that I didn't know what to do after I finished it to where I was depressed for a little because I grew attached to Shadow and the game as a whole. I'm 25 now and it just hits even harder that my childhood is done and over with, and your comment made me understand what I was feeling, thanks for that. Be well please.

No other game in the franchise has managed to strike the perfect balance between "edgy"/dark and fun-loving like SA2 did, and I doubt one ever will. This game's tone hit the sweet spot to be able to pull of an ending this bittersweet with a story about a blue hedgehog that runs fast.
Unleashed came pretty damn close, though.

@@markharbath31X9 Actually, fun fact, Sega was never planning on bringing Shadow back, he actually legit died at the end of this game, but because of fans begging Sega to bring him back, he made his grand return in Sonic Heroes.
When a reimagined version of this was made, they took out that Dialogue and made him say "I believe that your father was angry because something he loved was taken from him. I guess him and Shadow aren't so different after all." Something like that. And they redid a few other lines that were amazing.

It shows that Sonic is saying farewell, not to an enemy or a hero, but to a friend. He is saying that Shadow doesn't need to be the ultimate life form or be stuck in the past, but he can be who he wants. And with all Shadow went through, the "the hedgehog" at the end, letting him know that he doesn't need to fill a big role but just be who he wants, is beautiful.
not only that; he dropped the "fake hedgehog" name calling as well. Remember that sonic was the one to call shadow that first but here he finally acknowledged shadow.
In my opinion, Sonic Adventure 2 is one of the, if not emotional Sonic games.
Its one of the best for sure, and a fine example of how a modern Sonic story should be written.

Ok...this is kinda embarassing to admit, but I just beat SA2 like less than 5 mins ago...and I cried so much at this cutscene. My face is still wet. I even knew they brought him back in Heroes, but this just had so much emotion. Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog.

@TT7 No thats the real one. He remembers how Rouge loves jewelry in heroes which is a specific detail to remember. Also the Final Boss of Shadow The Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman even states that he is the real one from Sa2. He recovered his body after the fall and gained Amnesia. Hope that helps^^

The story is so cheesy yet so genuine at the same time.
That's the difference between classic games like this and the new Sonic games. Colors, Generations, Lost World, Forces. None of them have actual genuine stories written with emotion. It's just a cheap good vs bad plot and poor writing. And it's not like they CAN'T come up with a good plot like the ones we used to have, it's that they're simply not choosing to.
It has a lot pretty cool moments and probably the best characterization in the series even though it’s silly. Now sonic feels like a throwaway cartoon

As a kid, I had always wondered why Shadow had to die while Sonic was fine. It wasn't until I was older that I realized he was too tired. From fighting the Biolizard on his own to using his first Super Transformation, to fighting the Final Hazard with Sonic, and finally stopping the Space Colony ARK via Chaos Control with Sonic. It was all too much on his body to handle back to back, especially when we see him using his Air Shoe's thrusters to maintain his flight in his last push to stop the Space Colony ARK.

These credits give me a theory. I think this is the end of the Sonic timeline because they are all friends. This might have meant to be the end of the franchise, but the idea that these characters realize their full potential is a big hint that this is the end of the Sonic timeline. Also, Shadow gets killed off, thus leaving more significance. But what sparks this is the conversation between Tails and Dr. Eggman. Dr. Eggman realizes that teamwork can help anyone get through anything. Rouge says that she is thinking of something other than jewels. Now that all the characters reconcile, it's strange that, in future games, Dr. Eggman is an antagonist and Shadow is a recurring character. Thus, Sonic Adventure 2 ends the Sonic timeline.
The shadow in heroes, 06, etc. is an android made by eggman. Or maybe he survived the fall? I don't know that part confuses me. What I do know is this isn't the end of the timeline. This is the game shadow debuted in so how would sonic and co. know about him in future games? Sorry, but your theory is wrong.

If Shadow dies in one game, and lives on in another, the game must end the timeline. Eggman also realizes that teamwork can get you further than evil can.

Yale Kolin Unfortunately that would also be incorrect. It's revealed in Shadow the Hedgehog (during the final fight, if you stay in there a good while) that Robotnik had a robot go out and save him. Which is why, in Sonic Heroes, he's in a lab along with Omega. He's not a clone, but rather the original seen here in SA2. Feel free to search the revelation yourself. It's not the most dramatic answer, but it explains things.

You know, Gerald Robotnik's story is tragic...I can't imagine feeling so wronged by the world that I'm willing to kill everyone who lives on it. And all he wanted to do was save his Granddaughter from dying of a degenerative illness.
Then again, he is Eggman's grandfather. Perhaps a penchant for psychosis runs in the family, and we just got lucky with Eggman not being an omnicidal lunatic.

Definitely the end of the consistent narrative through-lines in the Sonic series. Heroes functions as a bit of an epilogue that ties up loose ends, but I definitely think the "Sonic story" ends around here. The Chaos Emeralds, the Knuckles Clan, Chaos power, everything works seamelessly together from Sonic 1 up to here. That isn't to say that later games have been bad, I think Unleashed's story is great, but if I had to tell the Sonic story, it'd he from Sonic 1 to SA2. The "Chaos Control" Saga.

There is no such thing as a perfect game, but there is such a thing as a perfect scene. This is the best moment in Sonic history, for the best game.
This short version of live and learn is just so perfect. The way it just jumps in knowing what it's about and kinda let's the mind ride off in the distance with the memory of a badass hero and end of an epic adventure as a new one shall come another day. It's such an end credit song and just wraps all you've been through up with a bang and might even bring down the pit in the chest feeling after the scene prior and even gives some empowerment due to how epic it was during the fight. The best last hurrah of the sonic franchise and the rock along side it.
I don't get the people who say that Tails ruined the moment. What do you expect a 8 year old child to say to such complected question. Even if he is a genius, Tails is still a kid. He may understand robotics, Maths and stuff but that doesn't make him think like a adult. And while Eggman was thinking about something serious, Tails reminded him that maybe right now for the best is to think about the present.

But his phrase makes no sense.,Eggman thinks about Gerald”s motives and Tails says “ oh necer mind good guys win that’s all that matters” . Besides Taiks is a genius. He maybe 8 but he thinks like an adult. Remember the moment when Eggman presumably killed Sonic? He was ready to fight he was ready to DIE. He’s more than just a kid he’s mature.

This was hands down one of the BEST Sonic games. The voice acting was great, Knuckles sounded more serious than he does now, Tails actually sounds better when voiced by an actual kid rather than a grown woman, Sonic's voice fits with his character, and Deem Bristow nailed it with the lines for Eggman. The story was good, the cutscenes were great, and the ending is just the cherry on top. Its a shame that the new Sonic writers can't come up with anything good and basically trashed the whole franchise.

At this time I always had to go out because I would cry again until puberty hit. I grew up and didn't cry anymore. If I would play it again from the beginning I can't tell if I would cry.

This ending is so impactful, way better than Sonic saving the Wisps or Sonic stopping Eggman in Forces

I always get a lump in my throat when I watch stuff like this, Man I miss being a kid in the generation when games were made out of pure heart and love for the gaming industries fans.
Comparing the stories of the modern games like Colors, Generations, Forces and Lost World to this, it doesn't even come close. Sonic used to be so much more emotional and genuine... now it's all just surface level "hero beats villain" stories and bad jokes. What happened?
I guess we'll always have Sonic Adventure 2.
Yeah, I miss when Sonic stories was deep instead of "hero defeats villan, the end". I think kid friendly stories dont work for Sonic. I hate when people say " it's about a blue cartoony hedgehog" or "this game takes itself too seriously" this is why we dont get a Sonic game with good story. Btw not too serious like Shadow The Hedgehog lol.

No matter how much future games mess up, we will always go back to this masterpiece.
The fact that this could have been the last Sonic game really made this hit hard. It's one of the only game moments that made me genuinely cry, and I can't wait to do the same in December at the theater.
I legit just beat the game a few minutes ago on my PC, and man, this ending gave me chills. This scene where all of our heroes slow down and show their more human side for even a brief moment is just a wonderful ending. Eggman expressing to Tails how much of an inspiration his grandfather was to him and why he was driven to be a great scientist. Sonic mourning Shadow's death after he did everything to save humanity from destruction. Even the cutscenes after the credits (5:31) without any audio made me emotional, especially after following Shadow's story, a guy who did everything he possibly could to fulfill the wishes of his only dear friend.
I didn't have the privilege of playing through SA2 when I was younger on any SEGA console; I literally had my first experience with the game this past week, 20+ years after it was made Lmao. But despite not having any childhood nostalgia towards the game, I can easily see why it's one of the most beloved Sonic games in the series. Despite being flawed, it's still a game that radiates ambition through its edgy yet emotional story, kickass soundtrack, and intense gameplay (...mainly Sonic's and Shadow's). Unlike many other Sonic titles, SA2 is more than just a game. It's a whole new experience in general.
I think this is the first time in the games where sonic has to deal with someone’s death, that being shadow obviously
2:53 man this hits so hard, and the music makes it 1000x more amazing it’s actually majestic to my ears. From shadow and Sonic working together to shadow fulfilling Maria’s wish to the dialogue between all the characters.. and again, the music.

I kind of wish Sonic would've shed one tear when he turned away from Amy, to mirror Shadows. Especially since they go out of their way to show how much this effects him and he sort of swats Amy away when he says "It's nothing." The way the cameras positioned almost seems like they intended to.

This was the first game I got with my GameCube back in 2001-2002. I was only 7 years old and I cried soo much after beating the game, Shadow was such an amazing hero by the end...

Even though I enjoyed SA1 more, SA2 had a satisfying ending even after playing through those difficult levels. Also, it's sad to imagine if the Space Colony ARK is abandoned in space.
The world is not ready for this to be released on the big screen….

Just beat this game on the Dreamcast with my brother. We played SA1 and SA2 back to back… these games despite their flaws feel authentic and captures 3D Sonic, in my opinion, better than any of his modern outings. They hit a raw emotional angle, besides just nostalgia.
SA2 is a dark game but still feels enjoyable to sit back and play and watch these cutscenes unfold unlike what Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 had in store for us years later…. This ending cutscene (adapted in Sonic X) is even more powerful and tear jerking, heck the entire SA2 saga was well executed.
Still, I like the game version too - the final fight against Biolizard and the entire level before it plus the high stakes story involving a doomsday plot capped off by a heroic sacrifice makes this game feel like a captivating one to have beaten and one that could’ve nicely ended the Sonic franchise. If only lol. This should stand as the last game in the series timeline. But then Heroes and StH continue Shadow’s story…. lessening SA2’s emotional ending somewhat.

i’ve watched this scene a million times and i’ve never really thought anything of this line, but i saw it written out today and it got me thinking. is this sonic reflecting on his own origins, and what that means for him? considering sonic and shadow are clearly,,,like exactly the same.
maybe this was the obvious meaning and i should have realized what the line meant the first time, just thought it was interesting that it took me this long to think about! for whatever reason up to now this line only occurred to me as sonic musing over the adventure itself.
Interesting thought. My assumption since I was a kid was always that he's just reflecting on Gerald himself, and why he made Shadow. Heck, even though it was kind of horrible, it does work as a slight setup for Shadow the Hedgehog (the game). Creating Shadow the ultimate lifeform wouldn't make much sense of you planned to destroy the world all along, and as that game reveals he didn't plan to destroy the world with the Ark and Shadow was made to defend Earth.
The English translation doesn't make it that clear but shadow still does call sonic the ultimate lifeform, and the master emerald shrine is recreated with the biolizard which looks like chaos while shadow looks like super sonic, explaining both the mistaking of him for sonic and the line. Sonic was the ultimate lifeform shadow was based on. Works both literally but also symbolically as sonic became the ultimate lifeform by always moving forward, which shadow couldn't do. He was brought to his end by the past he couldn't run away from. In the end, he was the faker and couldn't live up to his creator's expectation. But in the following games he left behind his past and old purpose and gained a new understanding of himself, truly becoming the ultimate lifeform in his own right. Sonic is actually kinda deep wtf
